With blogs and 24/7 news stations newspapers will become obsolete eventually. Even without the blogs their news has always been a day or more old before it gets attention.

Our Woodward and Bernstein is more like Laural and Hardy.

I think newspapers will soon be a thing of the past. They will have examples of them in museums with captions like:

"For almost 300 years Americans relied on narratives describing current events printed on paper and distributed to paying customers on a daily or weekly basis. These periodicals met a swift demise with the advent of the internet which provided up to the minute information, rendering these periodicals obsolete."

As the revenue associated with circulation decreases, the cost of advertising in newspapers increases. This increase in costs to advertisers makes this form of advertising too expensive in comparison to other forms.

The very nature of newspapers leaves them as much as 24 hours behind real time information sharing media sources. Unless the owners of newspapers begin to fade out the hard copy form of print journalism and start spending more of their financial resources on the development and promotion of up to the minute, internet based interactive information sharing, they will never avoid the fate depicted above. From the looks of that graph, the story is unfolding as we speak.

Although I am by no means a financial advisor, I wouldn't advise including Gannet in my investment portfolio. The writing is on the wall.

Unfortunately Gannett is getting to be associated only with the embarassment known as the DT here in SBY. USA Today still doesn't suck, and is owned by Gannett. Maybe because the management is so much better it still serves a purpose. Time will tell.
