Alberofan visited Assateague Island this morning and delivered these beautiful pictures. That was one heck of a storm!

Yes, they do beach replenishment there. A few years ago we had a very heavy storm come through there and split up the Island. The came in and repaired it all back to the way it was.
I believe it was back in the 1940's when Assateague split from Ocean City and created what is now known as the Inlet.
I can tell you several things most people are completely unaware of in Ocean City as well. Any new construction, the curbing and sidewalks are some 2 to 3 feet higher than it used to be. This is because Ocean City is sinking and it is doing so quite severely. So anything new being built is being raised at least 3 feet higher than it used to be and now everything is elevated with parking below.
Seacrets used to have a concrete sidewalk along the Bay many years ago and is now under water. Just ask Layton Moore and he'll tell you all about it. The Ocean is actually rising, so in reality, Ocean City isn't sinking, it's disappearing. Assateague Island doesn't get the replenishment Ocean City gets and it's amazing how much of that Island is now gone.
Our home was directly on the Bay in West Ocean City right on the Thoroughfare. There used to be an Island or possible two Islands called Dog & Bitch Island not far from our property. It's now gone as well and we used to see it very clearly only a few years ago. The Government is talking about bringing them back as well? Assawoman, Dog & Bitch, at least Assateague has a fairly decent name, eh?
The Thoroughfare is slowly disappearing as well. The sand from the Ocean has traveled into the Bay so severely that within a few more years no large boats will be able to travel under the Rt. 50 Bridge and through to Ocean Pines unless they dredge it. Any plane ride above that area will clearly prove that too. I used to take pictures from above and each year you can easily see the difference.
Many Canals off the Bay have to be dredged regularly too because they're closing in. New rules and regulations are making it more and more difficult to dredge these areas and much of West Ocean City is in deep trouble because if they can bno longer dredge, they can no longer keep their boats at their homes and trust me Folks, it stinks, (smells) really bad when these areas dry out!
The inlet was cut by the hurricane of 1933.
That's another reason we got out while the gettin was good.

And that is some stinky mud dredged out of those channels isn't it! All grey and just rotten smelling...
