Social Security pays millions to people VA says are dead

The Department of Veterans Affairs knew they were dead, but the Social Security Administration kept paying benefits to hundreds of people anyway, according to a new agency audit released Friday that says at least $37 million in bogus payments were made.

Investigators compared the VA’s record to Social Security rolls and found nearly 4,000 people who were listed as dead by the VA, but were still getting checks. Some of those people listed as dead were in fact still alive, but others were deceased — and their checks never should have been paid, the Social Security inspector general said.

Among the dead veterans was one who died in August 2008 but continued to get checks until March of this year, when the inspector general got a report from the State Department showing he had died abroad, in Thailand. Social Security paid out $160,000 in bogus payments in that case.

A Few Hurrican Tricks In Case You Need Them

A few hurricane tricks for those who may need it:
1. Start running your ice makers now and bagging the ice in freezer bags. Fill as much space in between your freezer items as you can.
2. Freeze regular tap water for pets, cleaning or drinking in tupperware-type containers. REMEMBER to leave a small bit of space between the top of the water & the lids so the ice expands but doesn't crack the container.
3. Start using up your perishables to make more room for ice in the freezer.
4. Fill up all vehicles & check tires & oil. Fill up any gas containers you may have.
5. Cash from ATM, at least enough to get you through tolls and gas out of town. Call your bank if you plan on leaving the state so they don't freeze your card for out-of-area "suspicious" transactions.
6. All important docs screenshot & send to your email. Take originals in sealed bags or plastic bins.
7. Pet & livestock food & supplies. Vet records in case you need to shelter then at a storm-safe facility.
8. Evacuation plans and share with family members so they know where you're headed.
9. Consider putting heirlooms & photos in plastic bins in a high place, second floor, or safe room if you don't plan on taking them with you.
10. SECURE ALL FIREARMS & AMMUNITION PROPERLY.
11. Old rags & beach towels on your windowsills. Even with the best windows & shutters, water seeping from the wind pressure happens. A few damp towels is better than soaked drywall or floors!
12. Shutter windows and doors and bring everything outside into your garage or house NOW. Do not wait until the day before. Better to get done early and relax than wait until its too late, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE MANDATORY PERSONNEL (hospital employee or first responder).
13. If you don't already have your hurricane supplies, you might want to get them now. Shelves are already empty in most places.
14. Stock up on dry goods, bottles of water.
15. If you have a grill, stock up on propane.
16. Fill your tubs with water to flush your toilets with.
17. Lower your pool water to prevent flooding from that.

What Will Stabilize Used Vehicle Sales? (Hint: Nothing Good)

Until this point, a lot of what I've shared with you is theoretically based on my knowledge and experience of used vehicle values and how I believe they affect new vehicle sales velocity. Today, I am going to share some some hard data that I've been researching with a great deal of effort.

I genuinely believe that used vehicle values have a very significant effect on new vehicle sales velocity. I have explained it on Twitterand on a previous blog post through the concept of trade cycles. Because of this, I am certain that used vehicle values can be used as a leading indicator for inventory management at the manufacturing level, at the retail dealer level and certainly as an investment tool. However, I humbly hold that current used vehicle value indexes sources are not good enough.

There is a very specific group of vehicles that can be monitored in order to better project results. The Manheim and NADA index both have too much noise in the data. For example, the Manheim Index has no model year restrictions and includes new vehicle price inflation in the calculations. NADA goes up to 8 model years. Both average the data over multiple months and include vehicles which, in my opinion, have little to no impact on new vehicle sales velocity. Therefore, I have decided to make my own index.

For now, I'm going to use Ford as an example please ignore the red residual line until later.

Maryland State Police Labor Day Weekend Enforcement Efforts

(PIKESVILLE, MD) – Traffic enforcement efforts by Maryland state troopers during the Labor Day holiday period resulted in more than 6,900 traffic stops that led to 187 arrests, more than 90 of which included impaired drivers.

Maryland State Police patrol troopers began increased holiday traffic enforcement efforts on September 1, 2017 that continued through September 4, 2017. During that period, troopers arrested 93 impaired drivers, arrested 58 for criminal offenses and arrested another 36 people who were found to be wanted on warrants.

The arrests occurred during 6,982 traffic stops made by troopers working traffic safety initiatives that included additional patrols, sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and speed enforcement. Troopers issued 4,667 citations, 4,728 warnings and 647 safety equipment repair orders. Troopers at each of the 23 Maryland State Police barracks were involved in special enforcement operations during the holiday period.

Troopers Seek Public’s Assistance in Identifying a Theft Suspect

Delaware – State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a theft suspect that used credit card information to make purchases.

This incidents occurred between August 25, 2017 and August 28, 2017 when the suspect, depicted in the surveillance photo, used credit cards from unsuspecting victims at two different stores in Bridgeville and Laurel to purchase gift cards and other items totaling more than $500.00.

The suspect is described as a white male, 30-40 years of age, 5’08”-5’11” tall, 240-280 lbs. (Surveillance photo attached)

Trump Has Decided To End DACA, "Igniting A Political Firestorm"

On Friday, the White House announced that Trump would make his decision whether to end the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), or "Dreamer, program on Tuesday. Well, we won't have to wait to long, because according to Politico, Trump has made the decision to end the DAVA program with a six-month delay.

Trump, who has faced strong warnings from both Democrats and Republicans not to scrap the program and struggled with his own misgivings about targeting minors for deportation, is said to have made up his mind and according to Politico, "senior White House aides huddled Sunday afternoon to discuss the rollout of a decision likely to ignite a political firestorm — and fulfill one of the president’s core campaign promises."

Trump will announce his decision on Tuesday, with Politico noting that the White House informed House Speaker Paul Ryan of the president’s decision on Sunday morning. Ryan had said during a radio interview on Friday that he didn’t think the president should terminate DACA, and that Congress should act on the issue. However, Trump's conversations with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who argued that Congress rather than the executive branch is responsible for writing immigration law, helped persuade the president to terminate the program, although Politico hedges that "the White House aides caution that — as with everything in the Trump White House — nothing is set in stone until an official announcement has been made."

In what appears to be another victory for the recently exiled "nationalist" wing of the Trump inner circle, the president’s expected announcement is likely to shore up his base, which rallied behind his broader campaign message about the importance of enforcing the country’s immigration laws and securing the border. At the same time, the president’s decision is likely to be one of the most contentious of his early administration, opposed by leaders of both parties and by the political establishment more broadly. It also indicates that despite his departure, Steve Bannon still continues to have major influence on the Trump White House.

Report highlights farm manure pollution in four PA counties

With Pennsylvania lagging badly in helping to clean up the Chesapeake Bay, a new report by an environmental group highlights the role that intensive livestock farming plays in the state’s shortcoming.

Four south-central Pennsylvania counties where animal manure is heavily used to fertilize crops “contribute disproportionately” to the nitrogen and phosphorus pollution fouling local waterways and the Chesapeake Bay, according to the report by the Environmental Integrity Project.

The Washington, D.C.-based group calculates that farmers in Lancaster, Lebanon, Franklin and Union counties apply up to four to five times as much manure per acre as growers do in other Pennsylvania counties. Drawing on data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Chesapeake Bay Program, the EIP estimates that about 18 percent of the nitrogen and phosphorus in that manure runs off into local waterways.

Frog Logs Give Frogs And Other Creatures A Way Out Of The Pool

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — It’s easy for frogs to get into swimming pools, but getting them out can be a little more complicated.

Just ask Jeff and Lisa Robertson.

“We didn’t have frogs for the first four or five years, and then in just one year, they exploded,” Jeff Robertson said. “We had almost 60 frogs one day, 30 dead and 29 still swimming around.”

When their friend Rich Mason heard about it, the wildlife biologist decided to help.

“If you’re an animal lover and you have a pool, it’s a tough thing to watch things die in your pool,” Mason said.

Mason has designed a device he calls “The Frog Log.”

Narrative: On 1 September 2017 at 10:30 AM, a wanted subject, Alisha Langerak, was located and apprehended in Wicomico County. Langerak was sought on four District Court Bench Warrants, all issued in 2015 after she failed to appear for court cases where she had been charged with violating the terms of her probation in four rogue and vagabond cases.
Langerak had previously been profiled on local media outlets as one of Wicomico County’s “Most Wanted” subjects.
Langerak was detained without bond in the Detention Center pending a District Court Bond review.
Charges: Failure to Appear

Date of Incident: 1 September 2017
Location: 1000 block of Grant Avenue, Salisbury, MD
Suspect: Bryan E. Reynolds, 58, Salisbury, MD
Narrative: On 1 September 2017 at 1:36 PM, a deputy responded to a residence in the 1000 block of Grant Avenue for a reported domestic related assault. Upon arrival, the deputy met with a female victim who stated that she arrived at the residence to make a delivery at which point she became embroiled in an argument with her estranged husband. According to the victim, her estranged husband, Bryan Reynolds brandished a knife while making threats towards her. The victim further stated that Reynolds then exited the residence and used the knife to puncture and deflate two tires on her vehicle.
Following an investigation and recovery of the knife allegedly used, the deputy placed Reynolds under arrest. Reynolds was detained without bond in the Detention Center pending a future bond review.
Charges: Assault 2nd Degree and Malicious Destruction of Property 

Incident: Stolen Vehicle
Date of Incident: 2 September 2017
Location: 30000 block of Harris Lane, Delmar, MD
Suspect: Kenith Lee Buckley, 41, Greenwood, DE
Narrative: On 2 September 2017 at 4:08 PM, a deputy responded to a residence in the 30000 block of Harris Lane for the report of a stolen vehicle. Upon arrival, the deputy learned that a suspect, Kenith Buckley, left with the victim’s vehicle without permission. The deputy learned that Buckley was seen operating the stolen vehicle and that at no time did he have permission to even take the keys, much less use the vehicle.
While on scene conducting the investigation, Buckley drove back onto the property at which time he was detained. It was also discovered that Buckley had removed both prescription medication and jewelry that belonged to the victim that was left in the vehicle. Those items were all recovered elsewhere during the investigation.
Buckley was also found to be in possession of what was identified as Heroin.
The deputy placed Buckley under arrest and transported him to the Central Booking Unit. Following an initial appearance, Buckley was detained by the District Court Commissioner in the Detention Center in lieu of $15,000.00 bond.

Date of Incident: 2 September 2017
Location: N. Salisbury Blvd. at Dagsboro Rd., Salisbury, MD
Suspects:
Victor Kailani Martinez-Taylor, 25, Dover, DE
Nazaret Garcia, 26, Bridgeville, DE
Narrative: On 2 September 2017 at 10:45 PM a deputy stopped a vehicle operated by Victor Martinez-Taylor after clocking him on radar exceeding the speed limit. During the stop, a Wicomico Sheriff K9 Team arrived to conduct a scan on the vehicle, during which the K9 alerted to the presence of illegal drugs. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, the deputy located a loaded .38 revolver under the seat.
Both Martinez-Taylor and his passenger, Nazaret Garcia, were placed under arrest for the illegal transport of the firearm. Further inquiry into their backgrounds revealed that Martinez-Taylor was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to previous criminal convictions.
The deputy transported both Martinez-Taylor and Garcia to the Central Booking Unit and following their initial appearances they were both released on Personal Recognizance by the District Court Commissioner.

Suspect: Jeremiah E. Matthews, 37, Salisbury, MD
Narrative: On 4 September 2017 a deputy investigated a reported domestic related assault that occurred on Virginia Avenue in Delmar. The investigating deputy met with a female subject who advised she had become embroiled in an argument with her boyfriend, Jeremiah Matthews, that turned physical. According to the victim, Matthews punched her in the face and grabbed her around the throat. The deputy observed signs of injury that corroborated the victim’s account.
The deputy placed Matthews under arrest and transported him to the Central Booking Unit. Following an initial appearance, the District Court Commissioner released Matthews on Personal Recognizance.

Location: 1200 block of Pine Street, Delmar, MD
Suspect: Emily N. Cantwell, 24, Salisbury, MD
Narrative: On 4 September 2017 at 11:03 PM a deputy stopped a Hyundai that was later found to be operated by Emily Cantwell after the deputy observed that Cantwell failed to stop for a stop sign and almost struck the deputy’s patrol car. Upon stopping Cantwell, the deputy watched while she slid over into the passenger seat from behind the wheel. Upon approaching Cantwell, she tried to tell the deputy that she was not driving the vehicle. The deputy also observed that Cantwell was alone in the vehicle. The deputy detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage, and that, along with other observed physical indicators suggested that Cantwell was under the influence of alcohol.
Following sobriety testing, Cantwell was placed under arrest for DUI. During further processing at the Sheriff’s Office, Cantwell refused to submit to a breath test.
It was also discovered that Cantwell was operating the vehicle with only an expired learner’s permit.
Cantwell was released upon the issuance of citations pending a future court date.

Left-Wing Outlets Spread False Story Claiming GOP Official Turned Down Disaster Aid

A number of left-wing outlets spread a false story claiming Texas Republican Secretary of State Rolando Pablos turned down aid in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, and instead requested prayers.

The story appears to have spread from one sentence in an article from Canada's CBC News. The story referenced an offer from the Canadian province of Quebec to send Texas "equipment and crews to help restore power and to provide blankets, beds, pillows and hygienic products."

"Pablos declined the aid for now, instead asking for ‘prayers from the people of Quebec,'" the article quotes Quebec's International Relations Minister Christine St-Pierre to have said. "He was very touched by the fact we called him."

The story was subsequently picked up by atheist bloggers, such as Patheos' "Friendly Atheist" Hemant Mehta. "Take the help, Texas. If God could help, He would’ve blown the hurricane away before it hit land," Mehta mocked.

Why McDonald’s Coke Tastes Better

Many Coca-Cola lovers have long said that getting their favorite beverage at McDonald’s is better than getting it at the store or gas station. It simply tastes better and is more satisfying than bottled soda, or even fountain Coke from another restaurant.

It may seem like our taste buds are just playing tricks, but McDonald’s has finally revealed information that seems to confirm why Coke may, in fact, taste better at McD’s.

Last year, the fast food chain answered the simple question, “Why does the Coca-Cola taste so good at McDonald’s?” on the FAQ section of their website, thereby giving Coca-Cola-loving internet users the ability to say, “Told you so!”

“There are many reasons the Coca-Cola tastes so great at McDonald’s,” the company writes on their website. “We simply follow the guidelines set by Coca-Cola and take steps to ensure it tastes the same as when you buy it in a bottle.”

But it’s not the same. It’s different, better, magical even.

Dead? You Can Still Get Social Security – These People Did

Close to 4,000 people whom the U.S. Veterans Administration thought had died received Social Security checks, an audit has found.

But some of the “dead” people weren’t dead. And some were.

At least 19 percent of the 3,925 beneficiaries studied got government checks sent to them even though they were no longer with us, according to the U.S. Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General, which issued a report this week.

That amounts to an estimated $37.7 million to 746 people who had died — and another $7.3 million during the next 12 months if federal officials don’t fix the problem.
