Preventing flights arriving from West Africa, however, will not be one of the necessary steps.
“Trying to seal off an entire region of the world — if that were even possible — could actually make the situation worse… Experience shows that it could also cause people in the affected region to change their travel, to evade screening, and make the disease even harder to track.”

The new officers took their oath, administered by Col. George F. Johnson IV, NRP superintendent, at Chesapeake College before a large audience of family and friends.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services plans to seek a vendor to produce as many as 34 million blank work permits and 'green cards' – the paperwork that authorizes illegal immigrants to live and work in the United States – as the White House prepares to issue an executive order after the Nov. 4 midterm elections.
According to a draft solicitation published online, the government agency will look for a company that can produce a minimum 4 million cards per year for five years, and 9 million in the early stages.
President Barack Obama has pledged that he will make a move on immigration reform this year. His original timetable called for a decision by the end of the summer.
Republicans have decried the plan as an 'amnesty' for millions of illegal immigrants, including hundreds of thousands of unaccompanied minors who have come across the U.S.-Mexico border this year.

Deer, especially males, are prone to traveling without concern for roadways and automobiles during the fall, which is their breeding season. Motorists need to be especially alert from sunset to dawn as deer are more active during this period.
DNR reminds motorists to:
- Slow down if a deer is crossing the road ahead. Deer often travel in groups and others may be nearby;
- Be alert for deer standing along the shoulder, which may suddenly move into the roadway. Slow down and sound your horn to scare the deer away;
- Slow down and brake to avoid hitting a deer, but do not swerve as this may cause you to lose control of the vehicle, increasing the severity of the accident;
- Be particularly attentive in the early morning and evening when they roam the most; and
- Stay alert and slow down in areas where deer crossing signs are posted, which indicate locations of frequent activity.

A veteran TV sportscaster has been fired after he offered best wishes to colleagues who were leaving the station while live on-air.
On two occasions, Joe Swift thanked his co-workers on KNOP-TV in North Platte, Nebraska earlier this month.
Several days later, bosses called him in to say he was fired after he supposedly gave the impression that his friends were forced out of the company.

The first bridge to carry automobile traffic into Ocean City was approved by the Maryland General Assembly in 1916 but did not officially open until July 4, 1919. Known to locals as the “State Roads Bridge,” it had a single lane in each direction. It crossed the Sinepuxent Bay at its most narrow point and entered Ocean City at Worcester Street in the center of the old downtown.
This bridge was damaged in the Hurricane of 1933 that destroyed the nearby railroad bridge and also created the Inlet. For the three days it took to repair the State Roads Bridge, no automobile traffic was able to enter or leave Ocean City except by the long and sand-covered route through Delaware. The photo above was taken four days after the hurricane in 1933.
The State Roads Bridge was replaced by the current Route 50 Bridge in 1942.

Transgender Troops Want Pentagon Ban Lifted
But in other western nations, that's not the case. At a conference Monday, transgender troops from around the world gathered in Washington to share their experiences and call for change.
The ACLU Palm Center conference featured transgender service members from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden and the U.K.

Baltimore, MD - Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler announced today that Maryland, along with other states and the federal government, has secured a $31 million national settlement with Organon USA, Inc., resolving allegations that the drug manufacturer underpaid rebates to Maryland's Medical Assistance Program, offered improper financial incentives to nursing home pharmacy companies, promoted its antidepressants for unapproved uses and misrepresented its drug prices to Maryland's Medical Assistance Program. Maryland's share of the settlement is $392,097.78, a portion of which will be shared with the federal government, which provides funding for the Maryland Medicaid Program.
"This money belongs to the citizens of Maryland and can be used to provide health care to those in need," said Attorney General Gansler. "This drug manufacturer put profit above customer care when it offered kickbacks to nursing home pharmacy companies that plugged the unapproved use of its products."
