White Marlin Open Begins Tomorrow in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, MD — Offshore fishing is red hot in Ocean City, and White Marlin Open directors are looking forward to an action-packed tournament. The marlin season in Ocean City started with an early bang when the first white was caught on May 29, breaking the old record of June 1. Fishing has only gotten better with large numbers of white marlin, blue marlin, tuna and gaffer dolphin being caught. Lots of fish always make for an exciting White Marlin Open and with over 300 boats and $2.25 million in prize money expected, it is guaranteed not to disappoint.

This year’s event is rapidly approaching with fishing taking place the week of August 8-12. Boats may enter through Sunday August 7. Charter boats and boat slips are still available.

Voted by readers of In The Bite magazine as the tournament they would most like to fish, the White Marlin Open is a billfish tournament you don’t want to miss. As stated in Marlin Magazine, “With solid fishing and huge payouts, it’s tough to compete with the White Marlin Open.”

Hundred Flock to Tamer “Bumper Bash” Party

A woman in a red bikini danced giddily on a big floating trampoline in the Magothy River, at one point turning a graceful back flip — without losing her straw hat. Her apparent carefree delight captured what fans consider the true spirit of Bumper Bash, a yearly convergence of boat-borne revelers.

But on Saturday, the men in blue were no less a part of the story at the party's fifth-annual installment. Spurred by multiple fights and drunken rowdiness last year, authorities stepped up the police presence considerably, both along the Dobbins Island beach and in the river.

The Coast Guard for the first time mandated a 40-foot-wide float-free channel leading to the beach in case of emergency, and paramedics were stationed on a county fireboat and in an ambulance on shore.

Former Destroyer to Be Sunk for Artificial Reef

With almost every regulatory hurdle cleared, planners believe they are about two weeks away from sinking a 563-foot former Navy destroyer off the coast of Maryland to create the largest artificial reef on the Eastern Seaboard.

The Arthur W. Radford, docked in Philadelphia, is nearing the end of a laborious effort to remove all salvageable and toxic material and pass inspection by federal environmental and maritime safety officials, Erik Zlokovitz, artificial reef coordinator for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources told a state fisheries advisory commission Tuesday night.

Today, marine salvage teams from Virginia-based American Marine Group are expected to remove the massive propellers, one of the final steps in creating a hulking structure that will serve as home for fish and crustaceans.

Zlokovitz told the Sportfish Advisory Commission that planners have targeted the first week in August for the sinking of the Radford.

Tuna Plentiful As Maryland Tournament Begins

As the Ocean City Tuna Tournament gets under way, the right blend of ocean temperatures have drawn yellowfin and bluefin species in great numbers, fishermen and scientists say.

That's good news for anglers who will compete for hefty cash prizes during the fishing tournament, which begins today. Last year, the boat bringing in the heaviest total weight received $162,000, and the boat hooking the single heaviest tuna -- at 79 pounds -- received $64,000.

At this time of year, bluefin tuna often head north for colder seas, but swaths of cold water have kept them near Ocean City, said Marty Gary, the assistant director and fisheries ecologist for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Service. The opposite is true for yellowfin tuna, which are enjoying warmer water from the Gulf jet stream, farther out at sea, he said.

Take the “Five in July” Park Pledge

July is Parks and Recreation Month. As County Commissioners, we recognize that parks and recreation areas play a fundamental role in the health and well-being of our community. So, with that in mind, we challenge area residents to take the National Parks and Recreation Month challenge, Take the Five in July Park Pledge.

Take the five Fridays, five Saturdays and five Sundays this month to create healthy weekend habits by getting outdoors and exploring the parks, trails, playgrounds and natural areas at your Worcester County Parks. You’ll be amazed to discover the wonders awaiting you at the 13 parks and recreation areas nestled between the northernmost and southernmost tips of the county.

Worcester County Recreation and Parks acquired its first park, John Walter Smith Park in Snow Hill, in 1974.  Newtown Park and Showell Park followed in 1975 and 1976.

The park system continued to grow by leaps and bounds with the Isle of Wight Park and Stockton Park coming online in 1985 and 1988. However, the greatest park growth occurred in the 1990s. In 1990, Bishopville Park was established, followed by the Northern Worcester Athletic Complex in 1992. In 1993, the Herring Creek Nature Park opened, and in 1995 the Newark Park was developed. The Whaleyville Park opened in 1999, and in 2003, the Homer Gudlesky Park opened.

In 2006, the county received Greys Creek Nature Park and in 2009 received the Girdletree Park. These two parks are in the developmental stages and not yet open to the public.

What can you expect to find at Worcester County parks? While each of the parks offers diverse recreational opportunities, combined they offer playgrounds, pavilions, fishing, crabbing, canoe and kayak launches, lighted multi-purpose fields, dugouts, and softball fields along with hours upon hours of recreational and leisure time.

Visit your local Worcester County parks with family and friends to have fun, engage in great outdoor activities and keep fit. For more information regarding Worcester County Recreation & Parks programs and parks, call 410-632-2144.

Camp Wright Gets Improvements

Campers at Camp Wright will see some new structures when they begin arriving this month for residential and day camp activities.

The 81-year-old camp, which is a function of the Episcopal Diocese of Easton, has built a new pavilion for use by both groups of campers and a new cabin for use by residential campers.

Their completion follows a busy off-season for the camp during which many of the existing buildings were repaired and painted as part of improvements to the physical plant of the camp, which is on the Bay just off Route 8.

"The main focus of the pavilion has been for the day camp. It's been using tents for the last nine years," said Camp Wright Director Dee Zeller. "The residential camp will also be using it in the evening."

It will also be available for use by rental groups in the spring and fall, she said. Zeller explained that the pavilion is the first step in a camp master plan that has been under discussion for some time.

How Many Flounder Are Maryland Fishermen Catching?

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources wants to know how many flounder recreational fishermen are catching in Maryland's coastal bays.

The department is partnering with the Atlantic Coast Chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportsmen's Association on a survey of the recreational flounder catch.

MSSA members will take to the water to distribute the survey to anglers. The surveys distributed in July and August will cover "Flounder Alley," a popular flounder fishing area in the Isle of Wight and Sinepuxent Bays.

The survey results will be compared with estimates from the National Marine Fisheries Service

Ft. Monroe Gets Push for National Park

This historic Army post may have won over a most important ally on Wednesday: Cabinet member Ken Salazar, secretary of the interior. Salazar toured the 570-acre base in Hampton before meeting with about 150 citizens, almost all of whom indicated strong support for making Fort Monroe a national park after the Army departs in September.

As head of the federal agency that oversees the National Park Service, and as President Barack Obama's point man on preserving and protecting the nation's heritage and natural resources, Salazar could be pivotal in making that happen.

He was clearly impressed with what he saw inside and outside the moated stone fort at the heart of the property.

"This is an incredible place," he told the audience gathered at Bay Breeze Community Center on the fort's easternmost beach.

Later, at a meeting with The Virginian-Pilot editorial board, Salazar said Fort Monroe could become a great example of an urban national park, and it is clearly in line with Obama's great outdoors initiative.

Pay $400 to Play With Bulldozers in Las Vegas

If you're looking for something different to do on vacation this summer, how about playing in a giant sandbox driving bulldozers and earth movers? That's the idea behind "Dig This," a "construction theme park" opening in Las Vegas this summer.

It's a 5 acre dirt park with two Caterpillar D5 track-type bulldozers and three Caterpillar 315CL hydraulic excavators. A 3 hour-package for $400 gets you a half-hour of safety and handling instruction and then you're free to let it rip. Build a 10 foot deep trench, pile a mound, or pick and move 2-ton tires and snag basketballs from safety cones.

"Once we get our model finalized, we could move to Atlanta and New York as well as Tokyo and Australia," the developer told Engineering News-Record.

You could also recreate this experience at home by getting a job in construction. Not only is it cheaper, they'll actually pay you to do it.

Virginia Has World Record Catfish

The first fishing memories Nick Anderson has are from Kerr Reservoir, the nearly 50,000-acre impoundment on the Virginia-North Carolina border. On Saturday evening, he made his most indelible fishing memory there.

The 29-year-old Greenville, N.C., resident, fishing with his father, Rick Anderson, and his stepbrother,Jeramie Mullis, hauled a 143-pound blue catfish from the reservoir, also known as Buggs Island Lake. Pending certification _ and Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries biologists say everything about the entry seems legitimate _ the fish will shatter both state and world records for the species.

Anderson's catch was 57 inches long, with a girth of 43.5 inches. It would be Virginia's only all-tackle freshwater world record.

In March on Buggs Island Lake, Tony Milam set the current Virginia record with a 109-pound blue cat. Greg Bernal, of Flourisant, Mo., netted the world record, a 130-pound behemoth, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers less than a year ago.

Contractor Selected to Complete Skate Park Renovations

Ocean City officials have selected a company to complete the renovations at the Ocean Bowl skate park in preparation for the upcoming Dew Tour in July.

The vertical ramp has already been torn down and rebuilt, and it opened for skaters on Memorial Day. The bowl section of the Third Street park also needs major upgrades, but that work was more involved than what the one-man contractor who completed the ramp work could handle on his own.

Last week, the City Council instructed City Engineer Terry McGean to bypass the usual lengthy bidding process for the project and instead contact specialized skate park concrete contractors directly. During Tuesday’s meeting, McGean shared the results of those bids.

We invite you to spend some time exploring these natural wonders. From a leisurely picnic next to the bay at Isle of Wight Park to a day of baseball at the Northern Worcester Athletic Complex, Worcester County provides those of all ages 883 acres of scenic parklands to explore.

Homer Gudelsky Park, a one-acre stretch of bayside beach in West Ocean City, overlooks Ocean City and attracts more than just land dwellers. Those of all ages are sure to be delighted by the aquatic life that comes ashore on this beach in the spring, particularly the starfish! If you happen to see that one of these little creatures has been tossed ashore by the waves, be sure to follow the advice of the anonymous author of The Starfish Poem and throw it back. Named for an area philanthropist whose family has long supported the community, Homer Gudelsky Park has been a favorite among locals for decades.

West Ocean City is graced with a second park as well, the Herring Creek Nature Park, a 44-acre wildlife sanctuary located on Keyser Point Road. This park, which includes manicured lawns and natural woodlands, and trails surrounding a picturesque pond, has provided passive recreation to the surrounding community since 1998. It’s a great place to exercise, play or just relax and enjoy nature.
