Ocean City Police & Worcester County Sheriff’s Office to Conduct Alcohol Compliance Checks
OCEAN CITY, MD – (June 7, 2017): The Ocean City Police Department (OCPD), in cooperation with the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, will be conducting alcohol compliance checks from June 12 through June 24. This enforcement effort will take place at area bars, restaurants and alcohol retailers throughout the resort.

Md. mother accused of suffocating her 2 toddlers in 2014 sentenced to 45 years
WASHINGTON (ABC7) — Sonya Spoon, the Cheverly mother accused of killing her two young children in 2014 was sentenced to 45 years in prison on Wednesday, according to the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office.
“Today, we held Sonya Spoon accountable for this heinous crime,” Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said in a press release on Wednesday. “These two innocent children were killed in their beds, in their home where they should have been safe. We must continue to do all we can to ensure that no other family has to suffer through the loss of a child in this manner and that no child is ever placed into this type of dangerous situation.”
Spoon, who was 24 at the time of the crime, admitted to police that she had suffocated her children, 3-year-old Kayla Thompson and 1-year-old Ayden Spoon, inside her parent's home at 6209 Forest Road, where she had been living with the kids, only two blocks from the town's police headquarters.

Hogan holds back on joining Virginia, other states in climate alliance
Gov. Larry Hogan has so far declined to bring Maryland into a newly formed alliance of states opposed to President Donald J. Trump's decision to pull the United States out of the Paris climate accord.
A dozen states have joined the newly formed U.S. Climate Alliance of states committed to staying on the path to fight climate change the United States pledged to follow under President Barack Obama. Most are led by Democrats such as Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who joined the alliance Monday.
McAuliffe said Trump's announcement to withdraw from the Paris agreement "does not speak for the states and cities that are committed to fighting climate change."
"If the federal government insists on abdicating leadership on this issue, it will be up to the American people to step forward — and in Virginia we are doing just that," McAuliffe said.

'Kill them all,' Louisiana Rep. Clay Higgins says of suspected Islamic extremists
U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins, R-Port Barre, bared his own extreme proposal for suspected Islamic extremists after the latest terrorist attack in London: "Kill them all," his campaign's Facebook page stated Sunday (June 4).
Higgins' strong words were posted after seven people were killed and dozens injured on Saturday in London. It appeared due process was not a priority Higgins, a freshman congressman and former police officer, as he called for killing anyone suspected of being a radicalized Muslim.
His remarks sparked outcries on social media.
Jihadi Déjà Vu in London
Ramadan is the Islamic holiday during which an increasing number of jihadi terrorists murder “infidels” with whatever means available — and they do so in high-profile venues to foment greater fear. Last weekend there was a London replay of an increasingly common slaughter scene, on the heels of the bombing two weeks ago in Manchester, and a similar attack three months ago in London. (Five other attacks have been thwarted.) In the most recent attack, three men drove a van into a crowd on London Bridge, and then jumped out with knives to stab more people, killing seven and wounding scores more. It wasn’t Catholic nuns or extremist Presbyterians; it was Islamists bent on establishing a worldwide caliphate and killing as many infidels as possible in the name of their “god.”
British Prime Minister Theresa May, facing an election this Thursday, minced no words. “Enough is enough,” she declared, insisting that there is “far too much tolerance for extremism in our country.” She insisted, not a minute too soon, “Things need to change,” and she identified by name the “evil ideology of Islamist extremism.”
Two days before the attack, London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a Muslim sharia apologist, protested Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris “climate change” charade, claiming that global warming is “one of the biggest risks to humanity.” We challenge him to name a single London citizen who has been murdered by climate change — although given the Left’s “creative causation” claims, maybe he will come up with one.

Twitter Users Blocked by Trump Seek Reprieve, Citing First Amendment
WASHINGTON — Lawyers for Twitter users blocked by President Trump after they criticized or mocked him are asking him to reverse the moves, arguing that the Constitution bars him from blocking people on the social media service.
The request raises novel legal issues stemming from Mr. Trump’s use of his Twitter account, @realDonaldTrump, to make statements about public policy. In a letter sent to Mr. Trump on Tuesday, lawyers for several users he has blocked argued that his account was a “public forum” from which the government may not constitutionally exclude people because it disagrees with views they have expressed.
“This Twitter account operates as a ‘designated public forum’ for First Amendment purposes, and accordingly the viewpoint-based blocking of our clients is unconstitutional,” the letter said. “We ask that you unblock them and any others who have been blocked for similar reasons.”

85 percent drop in food stamp participation after work requirements restarted
Thirteen previously exempted Alabama counties saw an 85 percent drop in food stamp participation after work requirements were put in place on Jan. 1, according to the Alabama Department of Human Resources.
The counties - Greene, Hale, Perry, Dallas, Lowndes, Wilcox, Monroe, Conecuh, Clarke, Washington, Choctaw, Sumter and Barbour - had been exempt from a change that limited able-bodied adults without dependents to three months of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits within a three-year time frame unless they were working or participating in an approved training program.
During the economic downturn of 2011-2013, several states - including Alabama - waived the SNAP work requirements in response to high unemployment. It was re-instituted for 54 counties on Jan. 1, 2016 and for the remaining 13 on Jan. 1, 2017. As of April 2017, the highest jobless rate among the 13 previously excluded counties was in Wilcox County, which reported a state-high unemployment rate of 11.7 percent, down more than 11 percentage points from the county's jobless rate for the same month of 2011.
Ending the exemption has dramatically cut the number of SNAP recipients in the counties..

Two Maryland teens shot dead the night before graduation
Two high school seniors have been found shot dead less than 24 hours before they were set to graduate, in a shocking double homicide on a suburban cul-de-sac.
Shadi Adi Najjar, 17, and Artem Ziberov, 18, were found fatally shot in a parked car on Monday night in Montgomery Village, Maryland, the day before they were supposed to graduate from Northwest High School.
Around 10.46pm, residents on Gallery Court called police after hearing a barrage of gunshots.
'My wife and I thought we heard someone hammering something, and it just didn't make any sense around 10:30,' one neighbor told NBC Washington.

Baltimore County Council Tables Immigration Bill
The Baltimore County Council has tabled a controversial measure that would require the Baltimore County Detention Center to screen for illegal immigrants.
Council members voted Monday night to table County Bill 32-17, a measure that opponents called flawed and racist.
The legislation is backed by the three Republicans on the County Council, including Todd Crandell, who said the bill is modeled after ones already adopted in Frederick and Harford counties. Crandell said the bill calls for teaming up with federal officials to enforce existing immigration laws.
"The Republican bill would have cost the county millions and spread fear throughout the county, so I think the council did the right thing, by moving on," Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz said.

The Subprime 2.0 Bubble is About to Burst
As we’ve been outlining for weeks now, Subprime 2.0 is the subprime auto-loan industry. And just as the collapse in the subprime mortgage lending was what signaled the beginning of the housing crisis… trouble in the subprime auto-loan industry will be what signals that the next Debt Crisis is here.
On that note… subprime auto-loan defaults are soaring, hitting 11.96%. The last time they were anywhere near these levels was in early 2008 right before the credit crisis hit.
Even worse, the subprime auto-loan industry is just the tip of the iceberg for our current debt bubble.
All told the world has added $57 TRILLION in debt since 2008… bringing the total debt in the world to $217 TRILLION.
That’s means that globally the world is sporting a Debt to GDP of 325%.
And when this Debt Crisis begins, Central Banks will be powerless to stop it as they’ve already used up most of their ammunition during the 2008 Crisis.
A Crash is coming... and it's going to horrific.

Why I Refuse to Lie About Islam
The real connection between terror and the "religion of peace."
“Who cares whether it's a perversion of Islam or not?” The subject was terrorism, specifically the attack at London Bridge, and after the politicians had made their usual statements to the effect that this atrocity had nothing whatsoever to do with Islam, or was (at most) a terrible betrayal or perversion or hijacking thereof, several of us expressed the usual outrage over this barefaced lie. But one friend of mine, quoted above, wasn't having it. “Who,” he asked, “cares?”
It's a common question, posed routinely by millions of people who sincerely think that focusing on Islam in the wake of terrorist acts only makes things worse. Yes, the politicians may be lying through their teeth when they accuse terrorists of hijacking Islam, but these lies, we're told, are benign lies, which help to avoid giving unnecessary insult, to prevent increased radicalization, and to preserve social cohesion. Why, then, not just go along with the pretense that the terrorists' ideology is a perversion of Islam?

Sessions: Victims of Child Exploitation 'Getting Even Younger'
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said at a morning training event with law enforcement that "investigations and prosecutions of child exploitation are increasing, while the victims are getting even younger."
The 2017 National Law Enforcement Training on Child Exploitation in Atlanta brought together some 1,500 attendees for three days of workshops on fighting child pornography and human trafficking.
"Few others can say that their work matters so much. You are rescuing and protecting innocent children, and bringing to justice truly evil people who commit horrific crimes," Sessions told the law enforcement officials, adding that since beginning his job he's "learned more about the great work being done today to combat child exploitation."
"I prosecuted a good number of child pornography cases when I was a United States Attorney three decades ago. But the landscape has changed profoundly since those days, as all of you know firsthand. By all accounts, the scourge of child exploitation is getting worse," he said. "We know that just here in the United States, many thousands of criminals are involved in this exploitation. Many millions of vile images and videos now circulate the globe, just a few clicks away for anyone who seeks them out."

London Bridge Massacre Ringleader Was a Child Refugee
Brace yourself for a big surprise regarding of the ringleader of the recent London Bridge Massacre, Khuram Butt:
Butt reportedly arrived in the UK from Pakistan as a child refugee.
It’s nice to know some of the child refugees pouring in from the Islamic world really are children.
For “extreme vetting” to keep us safe, it will have to weed out Muslim children who grow up to be jihadists. It will also have to weed out refugees who give birth to future jihadists after they arrive in their new homes, like the parents of Manchester bomber Salman Abedi and Orlando shooter Omar Mateen.
Or maybe we should give sanity a try, and close the floodgates on the never-ending flow of refugees from Muslim countries. Then assimilation might at least be conceivable.

We Now Know More about Suspected NSA Leaker and ‘Resister’ Reality Winner
According to her online social media accounts, Reality Winner, the 25-year-old woman who allegedly stole classified material from the National Security Agency and leaked it to The Intercept, appears to be a far-left supporter of "the Resistance," Black Lives Matter, the Women's March, and the Islamic Society of North America, in addition to other left-wing causes. Her social media footprint also indicates that she despises President Trump and supports Bernie Sanders.
On the day after the 2016 election, Reality Leigh Winner retweeted a conspiracy theory about how the election had been rigged in favor of Republicans using a voter-integrity system called "Crosscheck." On February 7, less than a week before she started her job as a federal contractor with top-secret security clearance, she pledged her allegiance to Iran on Twitter.
"There are many Americans protesting US govt aggression towards Iran. If our Tangerine in Chief declares war, we stand with you!" she tweeted to Javad Zarif, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Baltimore immigrant loses bid to stay in US
BALTIMORE —A Baltimore immigrant who was arrested after dropping off his son at school has lost his bid to stay in the U.S. after immigration authorities on Tuesday denied his case.
It was a previously unwritten rule about undocumented immigrants -- stay out of trouble and they could likely stay in the U.S. without being targeted. But that's no longer the case with the aggressive crackdown by the Trump administration on undocumented immigrants.
A local Immigration and Customs Enforcement official denied the request of Jesus Peraza to be allowed to stay in the U.S. Peraza argued that he was in the country for 10 years, had a job and family. He has no record of crimes against people or property.
The ICE official ruled that there was no compelling reason to grant the request. Peraza is subject to immediate deportation.

SICK: Trump Graphically Stabbed to Death in NYC Performance
Just disgusting. There’s nothing preventing this kind of heinous free speech, but it does give rise to the incitement of violence against a sitting President of the United States. Shakespeare in the Park performed Julius Caesar on May 23rd in Central Park… starring someone who deliberately resembles President Donald Trump. So, another depiction of stabbing the President to death. These people are evil and vile in the extreme.
The production featured House of Cards star Corey Stoll in its cast. Shame on him. I fail to see parallels between the Roman dictator and Trump. Wasn’t it Barack Obama who had the Greek/Roman pillars behind him as he ascended to the Presidency? I think they have their presidents confused. The Public Theater’s website describes the Roman leader as “Magnetic, populist, irreverent,” and “bent on absolute power.” The description also notes that a “small band of patriots, devoted to the country’s democratic traditions, must decide how to oppose him.” Do tell… pretext to subversion and revolution y’all.

House Obamacare repeal bill meets Senate rules for simple majority vote
The American Health Care Act, which the House narrowly passed last month, meets the rules that allow the Senate to pass it with only 51 votes, according to the Senate parliamentarian.
The Senate Budget Committee said Tuesday that the legislation to repeal and replace Obamacare complies with the rules for reconciliation set by the Senate parliamentarian.
Republicans have sought to use the pathway, which lets a bill be approved in the Senate by only 51 votes instead of the 60 needed to break a filibuster.

Obama Kept Iran Cyberattack Secret to Not Derail Nuke Deal
State Department officials determined that Iran hacked their emails and social media accounts during a particularly sensitive week for the nuclear deal in the fall of 2015, according to multiple sources familiar with the details of the cyber attack.
The attack took place within days of the deal overcoming opposition in Congress in late September that year. That same week, Iranian officials and negotiators for the United States and other world powers were beginning the process of hashing out a series of agreements allowing Tehran to meet previously determined implementation deadlines.
Critics regard these agreements as "secret side deals" and "loopholes" initially disclosed only to Congress.
Sources familiar with the details of the attack said it sent shockwaves through the State Department and the private-contractor community working on Iran-related issues.
It is unclear whether top officials at the State Department negotiating the Iran deal knew about the hack or if their personal or professional email accounts were compromised.

The legislation, dubbed the "Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act" would make it easier to fire federal employees, including executives.
The legislation follows numerous scandals at the VA in recent years, most notably the manipulation of waiting lists for veterans, with patients dying while waiting for treatment. The bill's authors, Sens. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Jon Tester, D-Mont., and Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., argue that a key problem has been the department's inability to sanction or terminate employees because of existing civil service protections.
"This is a change in the laws of our country that will bring accountability to one of the most important functions that our government provides to the men and women who serve us in uniform," Rubio said. "This spring marks three years since light was shed on the veterans who died — died — while they were stuck on secret waiting lists at the Department of Veterans Affairs."

Nevada Governor Signs Bill Requiring Seat Belts on School Buses
Nevada Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval has signed legislation that will require new school buses to be equipped with seat belts.
More than a dozen children were injured in a school bus crash last month in Las Vegas, and in the last seven months, students in Massachusetts and Tennessee have been killed or injured in school bus accidents.
The Nevada legislation, which was passed overwhelmingly by the Legislature, requires that any new school bus purchased by a school district on or after July 1, 2019, be equipped with a shoulder-harness-type safety belt assembly for passengers.
Nevada joins six other states — California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York and Texas —in enacting laws requiring seat belts on the big yellow school buses that most students ride. In Louisiana and Texas, however, the requirements are contingent upon funds being appropriated by the state, and that hasn’t happened.
Advocates for seat belts on school buses say they should be required to protect children from being seriously injured or killed in crashes. Opponents say school buses are already very safe and question whether children can quickly unbuckle and evacuate in some emergencies. School districts also are concerned about the estimated $7,000 to $10,000 cost of adding seat belts to a new bus.

Williams: Democrats' Hoodwinking of Blacks
Ask any black person which political party has been black people's political ally. With near unanimity, blacks would answer the Democratic Party. Asked which political party has been hostile to blacks, they'd say the Republican Party with similar unanimity.
For better answers, check out Prager University's five-minute clip "The Inconvenient Truth About the Democratic Party," by Carol Swain, professor of political science at Vanderbilt University.
Since its founding in the late 1820s, the Democratic Party has defended slavery, started the Civil War and opposed Reconstruction. The Democratic Party imposed segregation. Its members engaged in the lynchings of blacks and opposed the civil rights acts of the 1950s and '60s. During Reconstruction, hundreds of black men were elected to Southern state legislatures as Republicans, and 22 black Republicans served in the U.S. Congress by 1900. The Democratic Party did not elect a black man to Congress until 1935.
President Woodrow Wilson was a Progressive Democrat and an avowed racist who shared many views with the Ku Klux Klan. He resegregated the federal civil service. He screened the racist film "The Birth of a Nation," originally titled "The Clansman," at the White House; it was the very first movie ever played at the White House.

London Mayor calls for Cancellation of Trump visit to UK
London Mayor Sadiq Khan is calling on the British government to cancel a state visit from President Trump after Trump criticized his response to this weekend’s terror attacks in London.
“I don’t think we should roll out the red carpet to the president of the USA in the circumstances where his policies go against everything we stand for,” Khan said in an interview with Britain’s Channel 4 News.
“When you have a special relationship it is no different from when you have got a close mate. You stand with them in times of adversity but you call them out when they are wrong. There are many things about which Donald Trump is wrong.”

Soros Gives Additional $250k to Tom Perriello for Virginia Primary Bid
Liberal billionaire George Soros gave an additional $250,000 to Virginia Democrat Tom Perriello in May, bringing his total contributions to the former one-term congressman's primary to $500,000, according to a campaign finance report filed on Monday.
Together with $50,000 that was given to Perriello from Soros's son Gregory, money from the Soros family accounted for 16 percent of the money the campaign brought in between April 1 and June 1 of this year.
The new contributions come after Soros gave $250,000 to Perriello in January and two of his other sons—Alexander and Jonathan—gave $135,470 to Perriello in March, bringing the total amount the Soros family has given to Perriello to $685,470.
Soros was not the only Democratic mega-donor to chip in during the final two months of Perriello's push to defeat Virginia lieutenant governor Ralph Northam in the June 13 Democratic gubernatorial primary.
Joining Soros with $300,000 worth of contributions is Donald Sussman, a hedge fund manager who sits on the board of directors at the Center for American Progress.

Alabama Sees 85% Drop In Food Stamp Participation After Work Requirements Reinstated
13 Alabama counties experienced some 'shocking' results, or maybe not depending on your natural level of cycism, when they decided to once again require able-bodied food stamp recipients, without dependents, to be employed and/or engaged in a job-training program in order to participate in the program for more than 3 months over a 3-year period.
As background, Alabama, like many states, lifted their work/training requirements associated with food stamp benefits after the great recession. That said, starting Jan. 1, 2017 the last of Alabama's 13 counties reinstated those requirements and they promptly experienced an 85% decline in taxpayer-funded food subsidies. Per AL.com:
Thirteen previously exempted Alabama counties saw an 85 percent drop in food stamp participation after work requirements were put in place on Jan. 1, according to the Alabama Department of Human Resources.
During the economic downturn of 2011-2013, several states - including Alabama - waived the SNAP work requirements in response to high unemployment. It was reinstituted for 54 counties on Jan.
As of Jan. 1, 2017, there were 13,663 able-bodied adults without dependents receiving food stamps statewide. That number dropped to 7,483 by May 1, 2017. Among the 13 counties, there were 5,538 adults ages 18-50 without dependents receiving food stamps as of Jan. 1, 2017. That number dropped to 831 - a decline of about 85 percent - by May 1, 2017.

Trump Jr. Slams Kathy Griffin: ‘Deserves Everything That’s Coming to Her’
Donald Trump Jr. is not holding back over Kathy Griffin and he shouldn’t. He believes she “deserves everything that’s coming to her” after doing a photo shoot utilizing an effigy of President Trump’s decapitated, bloody head. Afterwards, she had the nerve to claim she was the victim of bullying by the Trump family. Just ridiculous. The family was very measured and calm in their response to her. Frankly, I would not have blamed them for letting her have it with both barrels, both personally and legally. But to their credit, they didn’t do that.
The Trump family here acted appropriately. It was Kathy Griffin who was way over the line here along with her bottom-feeding civil rights attorney. Griffin claimed last week that Donald Trump had ‘broken her’. She did that to herself… now all her appearances are cancelled, she’s been fired from CNN and no one wants to go near her. She owns that lock, stock and barrel. Her career ended the minute she pulled this vile stunt, reminiscent of an ISIS beheading and nothing less than sheer incitement to violence against a sitting President.

Maine Gov. Vetoes Bill That Would’ve Required Deposit For Mini Alcohol Bottles
In an effort to cut down on roadside litter and give people a chance to make some spare change, Maine lawmakers approved a bill that would require retailers to collect a $0.05 bottle deposit on those mini bottles of booze known as “nips.” But the state’s governor has vetoed the measure, and has offered a few ideas of his own to deal with the litter the bottles create — alternatives that some in the alcohol industry objected to, even before he declined to sign the bill.
Resistance: Michael Moore Launches Whistleblower Website ‘TrumpiLeaks’
Left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore has launched a new secure website where whistleblowers can leak and share information from inside President Donald Trump’s administration.
Moore’s website “Trumpileaks” allows would-be whistleblowers to post leaked information via encrypted messaging apps, like Single, Whatsapp and Peerio, and even gives detailed instructions on how to send digital communications.
In an open letter on the site, the 63-year-old director says leaking administration documents and information may be “dangerous” and “may get us in trouble” but “it’s our patriotic duty” to “blow the whistle in the name of protecting the United States of America from tyranny.”
“Today, I’m launching TrumpiLeaks, a site that will enable courageous whistleblowers to privately communicate with me and my team,” the Oscar-winner wrote, citing the historical significance of the 1778 whistleblower protection law. “Patriotic Americans in government, law enforcement or the private sector with knowledge of crimes, breaches of public trust and misconduct committed by Donald J. Trump and his associates are needed to blow the whistle in the name of protecting the United States of America from tyranny.”

Breaking News: ISIS has claimed responsibility for twin assaults in Tehran. It is believed to be the group's first major attack in Iran
Several people were injured and at least one person died on Wednesday morning in two attacks in Iran, one in the Parliament building and one on the mausoleum of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks, which are believed to be the terrorist group’s first major assaults within Iran’s borders. The Islamic State is run by Sunni Muslim militants, and Iran is the largest Shiite Muslim country in the world. The assaults immediately raised concerns that a broader sectarian conflict could worsen.

Ontario Makes Disapproval Of Children’s Gender Confusion Child Abuse
Isn’t it awesome that a government has decided to side with a tiny, tiny, tiny percentage of people who are, for the most part, mentally ill?
(Daily Caller) Ontario passed a law Thursday that gives the government the right to take away children from families that don’t accept their kid’s chosen “gender identity.”
Parents who oppose or criticize the LGBT agenda will be considered potential “child abusers” and may have their children taken away by the state, according to the new bill. If the parents are ruled to be abusers by failing to wholeheartedly support their child’s gender choice, that child “can be removed from that environment and placed into protection where the abuse stops.”
Bill 89, also known as “The Supporting Children, Youth and Families Act of 2017,” received Royal Assent and was passed in Ontario by a vote of 63 to 23.
The old law allowed parents to “direct the child’s education and religious upbringing” but now says a parent must influence a child’s education and upbringing “in accordance with the child’s or young person’s creed, community identity and cultural identity.”

LOST IT ALL
I talked to a to a homeless man this morning and asked him how he ended up this way.
He said, "Up until last week, I still had it all. I had plenty to eat, my clothes were washed and pressed, I had a roof over my head, I had HDTV and Internet, and I went to the gym, the pool, and the library. I was working on my MBA on-line. I had no bills and no debt. I even had full medical coverage."
I felt sorry for him, so I asked, "What happened? Drugs? Alcohol? Divorce?"
"Oh no, nothing like that," he said. "No, no.... I was "PAROLED"

This Is What Happens When a Nuclear Plant Shuts Down
Plans to close an infamous plant were just announced. Such closures can be devastating for local economies -- even more so than when mining and manufacturing ceases to exist in a town.
There’s at least one thing worse than having a nuclear power plant in your town. That’s having your nuclear power plant shut down. On Tuesday, Exelon Corp. announced it will close the Three Mile Island plant, the site of the worst nuclear disaster in U.S. history, in 2019.
For obvious reasons, nuclear power plants were mostly built in fairly remote places, away from population centers. But they’re big facilities, with highly paid staff. When one of them closes, it can leave enormous holes in the local tax base. The closure in 2014 of the Vermont Yankee plant in Vernon, Vt., led to an overall drop in economic activity to the tune of $100 million. There aren’t a lot of other employers in the area to make up anything like that sum. As a result, taxes have shot up. “We saw roughly a 20 percent property tax increase last year,” says town clerk Tim Arsenault. “and we’ll likely see the same thing this year.”
The story is similar in other communities where plants have shut down. A decade or two later, taxes are up and the population is down. Communities that have relied on a single employer for decades suddenly have to rethink their economies. In certain ways, that’s harder than similar efforts in areas that lose their main manufacturing plant or have an extractive industry taper off. Nuclear workers are highly skilled in a specialized field. Rather than getting retrained to do something else, they simply move away. That affects the tax base, Arsenault says, and leads to a loss of human capital.
