Why Judge Napolitano Was Attacked By Jon Stewart

My Addiction, Through My Eyes

Most documentary projects about addiction expose someone else’s self-destructive behavior, but Graham MacIndoe took a very different approach: He photographed himself during the years he was addicted to drugs. He’d place a cheap digital camera on a table or bookshelf, set the self-timer to take a photo every so often, then turn his attention to the rituals of his habit: filling a crack pipe, cooking heroin, shooting up. Over time, he became more deliberate about lighting and composition, but the point was not to glamorize what had become a solitary existence, the monotonous repetition of an addict’s daily life.

I’m not a casual observer of these images; after Graham and I broke up because of his drug use, I found 342 self-portraits—images that he had not meant for me to see.

“In some way, this is exactly what I’d been curious to see,” I wrote at the time. “All those close-ups of the needle going into a vein, his expression during and after, the rooms and stairwells I never saw … Maybe the point is, ‘So you wanted to see? Here it all is.’ And then we’re supposed to feel sick over our voyeurism, because maybe we didn’t need to see that after all.”

High Tide / Low Tide!

For 8 years, Michael Marten has been taking photos from different spots of the British coast line, documenting the daily rhythms of the tides. This gave way to a special landscape project. Marten took photos of the same locations 8 and 16 hours apart, and showed the contrast between those images, a work displaying the dynamic nature of the tides and how landscape can be drastically different on a daily basis.

Two Injured In Officer-Involved Shooting In Encanto

Two people were injured in an officer-involved shooting in Encanto early Thursday.

Officers were serving a narcotics-related search warrant at 604 64th Street around 7:30 a.m. when they were threatened, according to SDPD Lt. Jorge Duran.

A member of the San Diego police narcotics unit repeatedly knocked on the front window of the home while the team was executing the search warrant. As the officer knocked, the window broke, police said.

As the officer looked inside the residence, the officer saw a 35-year-old man inside the room stand up and retrieve what appeared to be a weapon, officials said. Fearing he was going to use it, the officer fired several rounds according to investigators.

The man inside the room was shot in the hip area and was transported to a nearby hospital.

A second shooting victim, a 56-year-old woman, walked out of the home with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Obama Administration Let Anti-Gay Muslim Leader Into U.S.

Even as the Obama administration denounced what it called anti-gay legislation in Arizona and the president sat out the Sochi Olympics because of Russia’s crackdown on same-sex couples, the State Department allowed an Islamic preacher who called for the death penalty for homosexuals into the country for a tour of hate.

Sheikh Mohammad Rateb al-Nabulsi was issued a visa for a 17-city tour of US mosques to raise money and support for the Syrian uprising. He arrived New Year’s Day.

The radical Syrian cleric has made no secret of his virulent anti-gay views. Appearing April 28, 2011, on al Aqsa TV, the official network of the Hamas terrorist organization in Gaza, al-Nabulsi said: “Homosexuality involves a filthy place and does not generate offspring. Homosexuality leads to the destruction of the homosexual. That is why, brothers, homosexuality carries the death penalty.”

Quarterbacking For The Green Bay Packers... ???

In a news conference Deanna Favre announced she will be the starting QB for the Packers next season. Deanna asserts that she is qualified to be the starting QB because she has spent the past 16 years married to Brett while he played QB for the Packers.

During this period of time, she became familiar with the definition of a corner blitz, the nickel package, and man-to-man coverage, so she is now completely comfortable with all the other terminology involving the Packers offense.

A survey of Packers fans shows that 50% of those polled supported the move.

Does this sound idiotic and unbelievable or familiar to you? Hillary Clinton makes the same claims as to why she is qualified to be President and 50% of Democrats polled agreed.

She has never run a City, County, or State during her "career" of being Bill Clinton's wife. When told Hillary Clinton has experience because she has 8 years in the white house, my immediate thought was "So has the pastry chef."

More Bad Maryland Budget News Looming?

Another dose of bad state budget news could be looming as the Maryland Board of Revenue Estimates prepares to meet later this week.

Warren Deschenaux, director of policy analysis for the Department of Legislative Services, said revenue projects “were optimistic” and now appear to be “retarded by adverse weather conditions” including the polar vortex and snow storms that have made Maryland and many other parts of the United States colder than normal.

How much of a reduction, if any, the state will take has not yet been made public.

California Court Says Viewing Phone While Driving OK

A California appeals court decided Thursday some cellphone use while driving is legal.

Steven Spriggs of Fresno, Calif., successfully argued he didn't deserve a $165 fine for violating a statelaw against using cellphones while driving because he was not using his phone for communication, but instead using a map application to find a new route.

“Spriggs contends he did not violate the statute because he was not talking on the telephone. We agree,” a three-judge panel ruled. “Based on the statute’s language, its legislative history and subsequent legislative enactments, we conclude that the statute means what it says – it prohibits a driver only from holding a wireless telephone while conversing on it.”

Senator Colburn Reports From Annapolis (This Week)

ANNAPOLIS – Senator Richard F. Colburn (R. Eastern Shore) reported on events that are taking place in Annapolis. Senator Colburn stated, “Senator Steve Hershey (R. Upper Shore) and I recently met with the Maryland Deputy Secretary of Transportation (MDOT), Wilson Parran. We discussed several transportation projects of interest in Districts 37 and 38. The following is an update on those particular projects:

A new MD 331, Dover Bridge connecting Caroline and Talbot
Counties has long been my top local highway/bridge priority. The new bridge will be a two-lane, fixed span structure 60-feet south of the existing bridge. The new structure will have a 50-foot water clearance and consist of two 12’ lanes and 8’ shoulders. Due to the historical significance, being one of only three historic swing spans left in the state, the existing bridge will be retained and maintained and left in the open position.

Constructing a new bridge will provide a safe and dependable MD
331 crossing of the Choptank River that will accommodate both vehicular and marine traffic. The existing structure has had mechanical difficulties with the drawbridge in the past that has affected commerce and emergency services in Caroline and Talbot Counties. The existing bridge is functionally obsolete and it does not provide sufficient passing room for large vehicles.

Marijuana Legislation Could Save Millions Or Cost Taxpayers More

Two bills aiming to decriminalize or legalize marijuana heard in a Senate committee last week could potentially bring in millions in new revenue for the state, or could wind up costing taxpayers more than ever.

Proponents of the bills point to possible savings on jail time, courts and police, not to mention extra income from taxes on what is now illegal.

To get at these potential savings and earnings though, Maryland taxpayers will have to shell out $8 million on implementation.

Even if the bills do not wind up being the pay-dirt some are envisioning, however, sponsors still say the funds would be well worth spending to keep people from having their lives ruined by arrest and incarceration for a minor crime.

Politico Hack Who Ridiculed Palin In '08 Whines And Moans At Her Ukraine 'I Told You So' Moment

During the 2008 presidential campaign, GOP Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin made what has turned out to be a prescient remark about the relevance of a U.S. president's resolve and its potential impact on Russia's posture with the old Soviet Union's satellite states. She observed: "After the Russian Army invaded the nation of Georgia, Senator Obama's reaction was one of indecision and moral equivalence, the kind of response that would only encourage Russia's Putin to invade Ukraine next."

Many in the press ridiculed that notion. Among them was Blake Hounshell, who was then blogging at Foreign Policy Magazine. Characterizing Palin's notion as "strange," he wrote: "As we've said before, this is an extremely far-fetched scenario." Hounshell, now a deputy editor at Politico Magazine, has handled Palin's self-effacing Facebook "I told you so" ("I could see this one from Alaska") and pile-ons by center-right blogs too numerous to mention with tweets demonstrating the class, dignity, and good sportsmanship you would expect from the high-brow commentariat, i.e., none (HT Twitchy).

Connecticut Patriot Group Fights Back Against Confiscation Order: ‘We Are Armed… And Are Familiar With the Finer Points Of Marksmanship’

The war on liberty is coming to a head in Connecticut, where tens of thousands of gun owners have refused to comply with their state government’s gun registration laws. Officials have literally ordered those who failed to meet the registration deadline tosurrender their firearms or face arrest.

The State of Connecticut is now demanding that gun owners across the state turn in all newly-banned, unregistered firearms and magazines or face felony arrest.

The State Police Special Licensing & Firearms Unit began mailing out notices to gun owners who attempted to register their firearms and accessories with the state but did not do so in time for the Jan. 1 deadline of Connecticut’s newly enacted gun control law.

The law bans the sale of magazines holding over 10 rounds and “assault rifles” manufactured after 1994 and requires that residents who possessed either before the ban to register them with the state.

JEFFERSON’S FINAL WARNINGS

In his last years – after a lifetime of learning and experience, Jefferson had one thing preeminently on his mind: the principle of decentralization.

Rather than saying “centralization,” Jefferson used the word “consolidation,” but they mean the same thing. Here’s his core statement on the subject, from his autobiography, written in 1821:

It is not by the consolidation, or concentration, of powers, but by their distribution, that good government is effected.

This statement put Jefferson at odds with the political leaders of his time and raised difficulties for him, as he writes in a letter to Judge William Johnson in 1823:

I have been blamed for saying, that a prevalence of the doctrines of consolidation would one day call for reformation or revolution.

For the following passage – a letter to William Johnson, written in 1822 – I’ll set Jefferson’s words in italics and my explanation/commentary in plain text:

They [a political party] rally to the point which they think next best, a consolidated government.

ObamaCare May Put 40% Of Home Health Care Providers Out Of Busimess

We had to pass the bill to find out what’s in it. Also destroy health care in America.

Sebelius herself, using discretion granted her by the Affordable Care Act, cut the maximum allowed by law from home health care funds. The cuts were deep enough that officials offered a damaging prediction of the impact saying, it was estimated that approximately 40 percent of providers would have negative margins.

And companies with negative margins don’t last long — or have to cut workers.

In fact, those cuts put in jeopardy 498,000 jobs of home health care workers who work just for that 40 percent of firms that will be forced into the red — the kind of home health workers who allow Yvonne Wightman, 98, to avoid expensive hospital or nursing home stays by getting care at home.

Maryland Case Could Set National Precedent On Bail

In Maryland each year, thousands of defendants appear before court commissioners - not judges - who set their bail without an attorney present.

The state's court system has drawn criticism from legislators, judges and advocates for the poor, nonviolent offenders. They say every defendant has the right to an attorney, even at the earliest stages of their case. Lawmakers are considering an overhaul of the system, and the state's highest court is set to hear arguments on the issue thise week..

Legal experts say the Maryland case could provide a blueprint on how to litigate for change in other states where legal counsel is not guaranteed during bail hearings.

Having a defense attorney at a bail hearing is crucial.

DO DRONES PRESENT NEW MILITARY OPPORTUNITIES OR ARE THEY SIMPLY AN UPDATED TECHNOLOGICAL VARIANT OF AGE-OLD WEAPONS AND TACTICS?

In 1907, just four years after the Wright Brothers had flown a few hundred yards across the beaches of North Carolina, H. G. Wells imagined The War in the Air. In Wells’ dark fantasy, the German Empire employs a fleet of airships to preemptively attack the United States, its only potential scientific, industrial, and geopolitical peer. The German target was New York.

Something had dropped from the aeroplane, something that looked small and flimsy. A little man was sprinting along the sidewalk within half a dozen yards, and two or three others and one woman were bolting across the roadway. They were odd little figures, so very small were they about the heads, so very active about the elbows and legs. It was really funny to see their legs going. Foreshortened, humanity has no dignity....

Then blinding flames squirted out in all directions from the point of impact, and the little man who had jumped became, for an instant, a flash of fire and vanished—vanished absolutely. The people running out into the road took preposterous clumsy leaps, then flopped down and lay still, with their torn clothes smouldering into flame....

In this manner the massacre of New York began. She was the first of the great cities of the Scientific Age to suffer by the enormous powers and grotesque limitations of aerial warfare.

URL: Fear And Trembling For Democrats On Capitol Hill

How bad are things in Congress right now for Democrats? So bad that a guy who has been there 58 years is calling it quits. I mean, c’mon, where does he have to go?

They’re dropping like flies up on Capitol Hill. So far, nine House Democrats have announced they’re retiring; two just flat-out resigned, see ya’, we’re outta’ here.

That 58-year congressman, John Dingell, had this to say about the modern-day American legislature: “I find serving in the House to be obnoxious. … The enormous expense of money made by people in the course of the campaign has not been well spent in the interest of the public.”

Shocker. Congress is a dismal dystopia loaded with disgruntled dyspeptics. Huh. And it took him 58 years to figure out that?

The Strange Death Of Hawaii’s Department of Health Director, Loretta Fuddy

The controversy swirling around President Obama’s birth certificate simply will not die. Take a recent plane crash in Hawaii.

Some facts are so striking they require further examination. On Dec. 11, 2013 a small plane in Hawaii on a routine flight in the middle of the day, taking off amidst a clear blue sky, suddenly experienced “catastrophic engine failure,” according to the pilot Clyde Kawasaki.

Shortly after the plane soared from Kalaupapa, Molokai, Mr. Kawasaki heard a bang and the engine died. At that moment, all nine passengers faced imminent and inexplicable death.

Yet, due to the remarkable skill of the pilot — he had been flying since the age of 14 and had flown glider planes for many years — he was able to make mayday calls and also land the plane safely on the water.

MoCo's Madaleno Persists In Attacking Poultry Industry

State Senator Richard Madaleno (D-Montgomery County) is pressing on with his proposed chicken tax despite Governor O’Malley promising to veto it if it gets to his desk. Even the Soylently green, Delegate Shane Robinson (D-Montgomery County) chickened out on his House version of the bill after O’Malley’s promise, but Madaleno, is proving himself to be the real Montgomery County Democrat by not surrendering while there’s still a chance of telling people outside his district what to do.

Here is how the tax would work. Typically Maryland chicken farmers work under contract to large poultry companies. The poultry companies supply the chickens and the farmers get paid to raise them until they are ready for the market. Madaleno’s chicken tax would force the poultry companies to pay the state five cents for every chicken they supply to a Maryland farmer. Proponents of the tax estimate that it would rake in $15 million annually. Richard Cross reports that the sponsors are calling it a “user fee” instead of a tax.

Delaware State Police Road And Traffic Advisory

Dover - Troopers throughout the State have responded to a total of 32 vehicle crashes including 4 with minor injuries, and a total of 35 disabled vehicles since 2:00 a.m. The majority of these roadway incidents involved single vehicles losing control and spinning out or traveling off of the roadway due to motorists not being able to navigate the difficult conditions. Roadways continue to be snow covered and slippery as the snow fall continues.

Troopers strongly encourage motorists to postpone and avoid unnecessary travel. Troopers urge all motorists who must travel to use extreme caution as road and weather conditions are treacherous. Motorists should be prepared for snow covered and slippery roads, along with strong winds and limited visibilities which make driving conditions difficult. Use caution while driving when approaching intersections and off ramps, especially bridges and overpasses. Remember to reduce speed and increase following distance between vehicles. Allow ample time to reach your destination, allow extra space between vehicles, and keep vehicle headlights on to increase visibility.

Troopers are ready and available to patrol, assist disabled vehicles, and manage roadway incidents and hazards for the duration of the event. Most calls for service received by Troopers during winter storms are for vehicle crashes, disabled vehicles, and abandoned vehicles which cause a major problem for DelDOT snow removal equipment and for Troopers responding to emergency situations. Again, Troopers strongly encourage motorists to postpone and avoid unnecessary travel.
