In Light Of Federal Court Ruling, OCPD ‘To Tread Lightly’ With Boardwalk Street Performers This Summer

OCEAN CITY — Keeping the peace and finding a balance on the Boardwalk street performer issue are the challenges facing the Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) on the eve of another summer season in the resort.

After two successful challenges in federal court to the resort’s ordinance regarding street performers, the latest of which came down last fall, some of the teeth have been removed from the town’s somewhat stringent laws regarding the omnipresent street performers and buskers on the Boardwalk. However, on the eve of another Memorial Day weekend, the OCPD is intent on acknowledging the First Amendment rights of the buskers while looking out for the interests of the public and the Boardwalk merchants.

Last November, a federal judge ruled against the town of Ocean City in a civil suit that challenged the 30-foot noise ordinance for street performers on the Boardwalk. That ruling came on the heels of a 2011 federal court ruling that the town’s ordinance in part violated a spray paint artist’s First Amendment protections for freedom of speech and expression. As a result, the federal court ruling allowed street performers and artists to sell or collect money for certain expressive materials.

Recognizing Government for What It Is

Voters have had enough of bloated and dysfunctional governments. The public sector still wants to own, control and run everything itself; no major company could survive with this kind of attitude ... Successful countries will be those whose government choose to do less – and do it better ... The great challenge of the next decade will therefore be to fix government, as John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge argue in The Fourth Revolution: the Global Race to Reinvent the State, published this week. The scale of the problem is immense; and increasingly, the solutions will have to be found in the emerging economies, rather than in the West. Successful countries will be those whose government choose to do less – and do it better. – UK Telegraph

Dominant Social Theme: There is no doubt people of good will understand what needs to be done. Governments need to be downsized.

Free-Market Analysis: Here is a mainstream media article about the necessity for governments to reduce their size and scope. It is surprising for the strong language it uses in tracking the West's current dilemma regarding expanding and divisive bureaucracies.

Nevertheless, it does not go far enough, as we'll explain. What the article DOES do however, is use frank language to describe what is occurring in the West.

The Greenspan Housing Bubble Lives On: 20 Million Homeowners Can’t Trade-Up Because They Are Still Underwater

One of the most deplorable aspects of Greenspan’s monetary central planning was the lame proposition that financial bubbles can’t be detected, and that the job of central banks is to wait until they crash and then flood the market with liquidity to contain the damage.

In fact, after the giant housing bubble crashed and left millions of Main Street victims holding the bag, Greenspan evacuated the Eccles Building, and then spent nearly a whole chapter in his memoirs explaining how this devastation wasn’t his fault.

Instead, he blamed Chinese peasant girls who came by the millions to the east China export factories where they lived a dozen at a time cramped in tiny dormitory rooms working 14 hour days. According to the Maestro, they “saved” too much, thereby enabling American’s to overdo it on the mortgage borrowing front. Yes, in so many words he said exactly that!

Lets see. The Maestro was allegedly a data hound. Did he not notice that housing prices in the US rose for 111 straight months from late 1994 to 2006, and during that period increased by nearly 200% on average across US neighborhoods. How in the world could this giant aberration have escaped the notice of the money printers around Greenspan in the Eccles Building?

I'm A Fiat Slave, And So Are You

Fiat money is at base a form of indirect wealth transfer from those forced to hold the money to those issuing the money.

I describe the pernicious servitude created by debt as debt serfdom, as serfdom implies a neofeudal arrangement that requires serfs' acceptance of this financial yoke of servitude. In other words, debt is freely accepted as the line of least resistance in a system that incentivizes debt and places high barriers to debt-free independence from a Status Quo operated to benefit the owners and issuers of debt, not the debtors.

Correspondent Jeff W. has identified an even more insidious form of monetary servitude that he calls fiat slavery, as the servitude is enforced by fiat (unbacked government-issued) money.

In other words, being forced to use state-issued fiat currency is a form of servitude, as fiat money is at base a form of indirect wealth transfer from those forced to hold the money to those issuing the money.

Minivan Strikes Officer, 3 Police Cruisers in Prince George's County

A Prince George's County police officer suffered serious injuries after he was struck by a minivan following a traffic stop of another vehicle in Forestville, Maryland, Thursday morning.

The crash happened just after three officers had finished a routine traffic stop shortly before 9 a.m. on westbound Pennsylvania Avenue near Walters Lane.

As they returned to their cruisers, they saw a black minivan veer off the road toward them, Police Chief Mark Magaw said. The three officers tried to dive out of the way, but one was struck and wound up under the minivan, which also hit all three police cruisers.

‘You Have Become What You Hated’: Comedian Explodes on Progressive Left Over Censorship and Hypersensitivity

Radio hosts Gregg “Opie” Hughes, Anthony Cumia and comedian Jim Norton, of the popular “Opie and Anthony Show” on SiriusXM, went on a fiery tirade Tuesday against “trigger warnings” and the current culture on college campuses, which they argue is producing childish adults unprepared to deal with the “real world.”

Norton also scolded the progressive left for becoming “exactly what you hated.”

“You have become exactly [like] the conservative, religious book burners of the 40s and the 50s and the 60s. You are it!” he said. “You are the speech repressors, you are the hypersensitive ones, you are the ones who want people fired immediately, you are the ones calling for people’s jobs. You have become what you hated.”

The discussion that preluded his rant got heated after Norton brought up a recent story out of Wellesley College where “hundreds” of outrage college students objected after a lifelike sculpture of a sleepwalking man in his underwear was erected on campus. Students ended up creating a petition to have it removed.

11 Qualities All Authentic People Have

Millennials voted, and Red Lobster lost.

In May, Darden Restaurants (which also owns Olive Garden) announced plans to sell the seafood chain for $2.1 billion to Golden Gate Capital, an investment firm.

Bruce Horovitz of USA TODAY believes the restaurant has struggled of late because Millennials don't like "casual dining" and have deemed uncool places like Red Lobster, Applebee's and T.G.I. Friday's.

Business owners beware: if you give off a "lame" vibe or make our generation feel put-upon, we'll run you out of town.

No further proof needed: New Ad Urges Hipsters to go to Applebee's Ironically.

Yes, Gen Y has become the arbiter of authenticity. But if we demand "realness" from a place that serves shrimp scampi and crab cakes, shouldn't we also seek it in ourselves?

Below are 11 authentic traits I've observed among "uncommon" people in our generation. Each one demonstrates maturity and wisdom.

Do they describe you?
1. Authentic Millennials are genuinely interested in what you have to say.

They don't look for the first opportunity to interject and dominate the conversation. They are inquisitive, enjoy being listeners and could care less if they blab about themselves.
2. They freely give praise.

The best among us know the incredible impact of a single compliment. They know how much people appreciate recognition and don't need or expect anything in return.

Maryland SHA Announces Plan To Expand Route 404

Maryland State Highway officials broke ground Wednesday on a $39 million project on the Eastern Shore.

The plan is to widen an almost 12-mile stretch on Route 404 from 50 to the Denton bypass. The road is a route many beach-bound travelers take to go to the Rehoboth and Fenwick Island resorts. Sometimes more than 23,000 drivers a day use this road during the summer season.

Now that more and more people are using the route, the two-lane road can't handle that much traffic safely. Officials said the extra lanes will be safer for cars and the shoulders are designed to handle pedestrian and bike traffic also. With just two lanes now, the traffic during the summer gets backed up on 404.

Parts Of Maryland May Be In Danger From Rising Sea Level

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) — Maryland has been labeled one of the most vulnerable states to a rise in sea level and a new report says several of our historic monuments are in particular danger.

Derek Valcourt explains the dire warnings for parts of historic Annapolis and the Eastern Shore.

When Hurricane Isabel struck in 2003, the huge tidal surge left all of the historical area of Annapolis near the City Docks under water. Now, a new report from the Union of Concerned Scientists finds within the next few decades, the bustling historical area could eventually be underwater more often than not—and you can blame it all on climate change.

New Evidence Challenges Fault In Rosedale Train Derailment

ROSEDALE, Md. —Nearly a year after the Rosedale train derailment and huge explosion, new evidence has surfaced that challenges who is at fault.

The 11 News I-Team has uncovered new information in connection with that accident and that new evidence challenges the CSX assertion that truck driver John Alban Jr. is completely to blame.

It's what isn't visible in the surveillance video of the CSX freight train truck collision that caught our attention.

A frame by frame examination of the collision reveals that the CSX freight train's safety lights or ditch lights were not on.

Democrats & Unions - Mathias & SEIU Part 1

Unions minus Coercion Equal Nothing

A recent piece in the WSJ is a classic illustration of the fact that the legendary political power of the vaunted labor unions is based at this point only on government-sanctioned coercion.

One of the biggest supporters of Democrat politicians is the ultra-leftist Service Employees International Union (SEIU). In 2005, the Democratic governor of blue-state Michigan, a socialist named Jennifer Granholm, gave the SEIU the power to unionize the 40,000 or so home health care workers in the state. These estimable folk are usually independent contractors – i.e., small business owners – or just family members caring for disabled people, often elderly people. Of course, the SEIU – like all unions – is desperately scrambling for more members to shore up its ranks. Union-tool Granholm held that because these workers get Medicaidsubsidies, they were to be considered “public employees.”

Other states also have deliberately classed home health care workers as “public,” including California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. All of them are solidly controlled by Democrats politicians – by pure coincidence, no doubt!

Make Your Flowers Grow Bigger and Healthier—with Aspirin!

One of the reasons I hate spending money on lawn care, plants and new flowers every season is that I am a terrible gardener! I have a very difficult time keeping plants alive, so I’m always looking for any tips or tricks to help me out. Thankfully, I found a helpful gardening tool I had never considered—aspirin! Aspirin has actually been shown to prevent fungus growth and help plants grow bigger and heartier! In fact, in 2005, a professor at the University of Rhode Island tested aspirin and its effects on gardening and found it to be extremely successful at warding off diseases as well as improving seed germination. By the end of the season, the professor found her plants to be much larger, greener and all-around healthier than they had previously been. If your flowers are looking less than lovely, try mixing 2 aspirin with 2 gallons of water and spraying this mixture on your flowers and plants every 3 weeks.

VA Scandal: This Is What Death Panels Look Like

The Veterans Administration hospital scandal that has claimed the lives of at least 40 U.S. military veterans continues to expand, adding to the image of a president who neither knows nor cares what happens to those who shed their blood on the battlefield for their fellow Americans.

With a little under six months before the crucial midterm elections, it is a helpful reminder to voters of the horrors that are not glitches, but essential features, of government-provided health care. The problems at the VA are omens, sneak previews of what the delivery of all health care in America will look like under Obamacare, and so it is fortuitous that the scandal should surface now.

Senator: Federal gov has 'no role' in funding police departments

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has blocked reauthorization of the 15-year-old Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant that has supplied 1M vests to officers

WASHINGTON
— A program that has supplied more than 1 million bulletproof vests to police departments around the country is facing a holdup on Capitol Hill.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has blocked reauthorization of the 15-year-old Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant, arguing that the federal government has "no role" in funding local police departments.

But Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and author of the program, said at a hearing Wednesday that "the law enforcement community has spoken with a single voice on this issue. They understand the unfortunate reality that life-saving vests can be extremely expensive, particularly for smaller jurisdictions, and that they can wear out too soon."

Local police officials testified that the vests, which on average cost between $800 and $1,000 apiece, can be life-saving tools in a dangerous job.

Ann Carrizales, an officer with the police department in Stafford, Texas, was shot in the face and chest during a routine traffic stop last October.

"I remember the muzzle flash, looking directly at the weapon and taking a mental note of its caliber, and then there were his eyes," Carrizales told the senators Wednesday. "I will never forget his eyes."

The Next Obamacare Scandal: A Taxpayer-Funded Bailout Of Insurers

The teleprompter is still hot from all the Obama spit unleashed in his latest sincerely passionate denial that his administration knew anything, anything at all, about what is merely the latest scandal to rock the president, this time surrounding the Veterans Affairs fiasco, and already a brand new scandal is taking shape, this one Obama however will not be able to sweep as easily under the rug. The LA Times reports that the "Obama administration has quietly adjusted key provisions of its signature healthcare law to potentially make billions of additional taxpayer dollars available to the insurance industry if companies providing coverage through the Affordable Care Act lose money." In other words, yet another taxpayer funded bailout.

More on this stunner from LA Times

The move was buried in hundreds of pages of new regulations issued late last week. It comes as part of an intensive administration effort to hold down premium increases for next year, a top priority for the White House as the rates will be announced ahead of this fall's congressional elections.

Administration officials for months have denied charges by opponents that they plan a "bailout" for insurance companies providing coverage under the healthcare law.

They continue to argue that most insurers shouldn't need to substantially increase premiums because safeguards in the healthcare law will protect them over the next several years.

But the change in regulations essentially provides insurers with another backup: If they keep rate increases modest over the next couple of years but lose money, the administration will tap federal funds as needed to cover shortfalls.

Although little noticed so far, the plan was already beginning to fuel a new round of attacks Tuesday from the healthcare law's critics.

On Benghazi, GOP remains suspicious of Hillary Clinton

It's common for Republicans to say there are "unanswered questions" about the September 11, 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. In some cases, though, it might be more accurate to say that questions have been answered, but Republicans don't believe the answers.

A prime example concerns then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's knowledge about the lax security surrounding U.S. diplomats in Libya. There's no doubt the situation was terrible; the Obama administration was woefully unprepared for trouble in the months leading up to the violence.

Democratic and liberal Washington was not resisting integration, just exercising its right to flee its blessings by getting out of town. The white flight to the Washington suburbs was on.

O'Reilly on America's Race Problem

Top Doctor: Magnesium Stops Heart Disease

Every 40 seconds. That's how often someone dies from heart disease — the nation's No. 1 killer — which claims the lives of nearly 600,000 Americans every year.

But what if you could greatly lower your risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke simply by taking a single over-the-counter pill every day? Dennis Goodman, M.D., one of the nation's top cardiologists, says that idea, in essence, is the promise offered by magnesium — a common mineral clinically shown to boost heart health.

In his new book, "Magnificent Magnesium," Dr. Goodman documents the strong link between cardiovascular disease and magnesium deficiency — and explains how the mineral help combat the nation's epidemic of heart problems.
