President Obama Jokes: 'It's Like the Special Olympics'

FROM ABC NEWS

President Obama Jokes About Being a Bad Bowler: 'It's Like the Special Olympics'
March 19, 2009 8:56 PM

The first appearance by a sitting president on "The Tonight Show" may well end up being the last.

President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.

Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he's gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically.

It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president said.

When asked about the remark, the White House said the president did not intend to offend.

"The president made an off-hand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics," White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton said. "He thinks the Special Olympics is a wonderful program that gives an opportunity for people with disabilities from around the world."

Facing tough questions about the performance of his Treasury Secretary, $165 million in bonuses for AIG officials and anticipating a fight over his $3.55 trillion budget, the president has not had a particularly good week, and it's unlikely this will help matters.

LAST DAY OF WINTER AND JUST ONE OF THOSE DAYS....

Donations Keep Rolling In For Christine Sheddy Search

Bill Bennet and Kathy French at the Pocomoke Walmart have stepped up to the plate to donate Doughnuts, Coffee and Fried Chicken for Saturday's search. Additionally, they have recruited about 40 members of regional Walmart employees to come out themselves and help out with the search.

Lankford Sysco, Hardee's, Subway, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, the Greene Turtle and dozens of yet to be known individuals have been so generous in donations of food and time.

The Moose Lodge in Westover, has made a monetary donation to Flatland Search and Rescue to help in their search efforts and Sondra Daisey, deceased Delegate Bennet Bozman's daughter who trains cadaver dogs will be coming with transportation equipment, and is donating 20 cases of water.

What an outstanding community that we live in!

Thank you to everyone who is donating their time and resources to this effort, and thank you to Brenda Ward donating her time to ask for the donations!

Remember, the search is Saturday morning at 9:00 am at 2911 Byrd Road, in Pocomoke. If you are interested in participating, try and share a ride with someone else who is coming, as the ground has been wet, as we want to be sure there will be plenty of room for all the cars that we need to park. Billy will be putting up directional signs on Friday night, so please follow the signs and park in the designated areas.

Don't forget your mud boots, and we'll see you Saturday morning!

Blogger In Iran Is Dead, Lawyer Says

(CNN) — A young blogger arrested in Iran for allegedly insulting supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an Internet posting has died in prison, his attorney said Friday.

Attorney Mohammad Ali Dadkhah said Omid Mir Sayafi, reported to be in his 20s, died in Evin prison, which is located in Tehran and known for its wing holding political prisoners.

Dadkhah told CNN that a fellow inmate called him Wednesday night with the news — and said he believed Sayafi would have lived if he received proper medical care..

Sayafi was first arrested last April, then released for 41 days before being arrested again. He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for comments on a blog that his lawyer argued was intended only for a few friends to read.

BREAKING NEWS: Boaters World In Salisbury Liquidated

Boaters World in Salisbury was completely bought out today by a Liquidator. Staff really do not know what's to come for their future. They could remain open to help sell off the current inventory. The company could be bought out and remain open, which is highly unlikely.

Nevertheless, don't forget to put on that seat belt Ladies & Gentlemen because this is exactly what I have been warning you about. Perhaps you'll read about it in the Daily Times tomorrow or the day after? NOT!

House Adopts Plan For 'Volunteer' Corps

The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a plan to set up a new "volunteer corps" and consider whether "a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people" should be developed.

The legislation also refers to "uniforms" that would be worn by the "volunteers" and the "need" for a "public service academy, a 4-year institution" to "focus on training" future "public sector leaders." The training, apparently, would occur at "campuses."

The vote yesterday came on H.R. 1388, which reauthorizes through 2014 the National and Community Service Act of 1990 and the Domestic Volunteer Service Act of 1973, acts that originally, among other programs, funded the AmeriCorps and the National Senior Service Corps.

It not only reauthorizes the programs, but also includes "new programs and studies" and is expected to be funded with an allocation of $6 billion over the next five years, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Released Thursday, March 19, 2009

Laurel – The Delaware State Police have arrested Angela N. Groesbeck, 27 of Laurel for several sexual assault charges after an investigation into an alleged sexual complaint revealed she had engaged in illegal sexual acts with three separate juvenile boys.

The investigation began on March 12, 2009 when the mother of a 15-year-old boy was viewing her son’s My Space account and discovered some alarming statements on the account. The mother found a conversation on the site that insinuated her son was sexually involved with an older woman who utilized a screen name of I LOVE MY SHAWTY.

The mother learned from her son that this person was Angela Groesbeck and that she was a neighbor of the boy’s father who lived at a separate location in Laurel. Police conducted and interview with the victim and discovered he knew Groesbeck from visiting his father’s home in Laurel Village. Additionally, it was discovered that the pair had sexual relations on February 28, 2009 at Groesbeck’s home. Groesbeck was subsequently arrested on March 13 and committed to the Delores J Baylor Woman’s Correctional Center in lieu of bail.

As investigators continued the investigation, they discovered that Groesbeck also had sexual relations with two other juveniles. In this case, detectives learned she engaged in elicit sexual conduct with two 14-year-old Laurel boys on several occasions between March 21, 2008 and February 28, 2009. All of these occurred at her home on Ponderosa Avenue.

Woman Arrested For Theft Of Checks – Stolen From Mailbox

Woman Arrested for Theft of Checks – Stolen from Mailbox

Released Thursday, March 19, 2009

Georgetown – The Delaware State Police have arrested a 40-year-old Georgetown woman for theft and forgery charges after she had stolen checks from mailboxes of a 67-year-old Georgetown man and a 64-year-old Georgetown man, both whom reside on Johnson Road in Georgetown.

The investigation began on March 17 after the first victim contacted police to report he had written a check in the sum of $350.00 to a business in Wicomico County for a personal expenditure. After not receiving confirmation from the county that they received the check, he became concerned because his bank records indicated the check had posted and cleared with the funds removed from his account. He contacted the bank, obtained a copy of the check, and learned it had been altered with the new payee listed as Tynise Adkins and not Wicomico County.

The second victim, who is a neighbor to the first victim, also experienced a similar account. He had written a check to Verizon in the sum of $35.02 on February 14, 2009. He later learned the Verizon account had not been paid, however funds were withdrawn from his personal bank account. An obtained copy of this check revealed it too was altered to be payable to Tynise Adkins for the sum of $235.02.

Investigators successfully obtained records from the banks that indicated a Delaware ID number and a date of birth from the woman who cashed the checks, both identifying Adkins as the culprit. Troopers obtained arrest warrants for Adkins and yesterday they responded to her residence on Tracey Street in Georgetown and took her into custody without incident.

She was charged with one count of felony Theft, one count of misdemeanor Theft and two counts of felony Forgery. She was released on a $5000.00 unsecured bond. Investigators believe there could be additional victims and are asking for anyone that may have been victimized in a similar fashion to contact Fraud detectives at Troop 4 at 302.855.5860.

Redneck Word Of The Year : "OBAMA"

Redneck word of the year : "OBAMA"

I BOUGHT ME A CASE OF BEER AND DRANK IT OBAMA SELF!

$23.80

On March 7, 2009, while in a paint store in Salisbury, a gentleman came in the store asking to borrow money. He claimed he was from Hurlock and offered to leave his driver's license as collateral if he could borrow some money, a specific amount of money. His claim was that his truck had broken down near the overhead bridge and it needed a timing belt. He asked to borrow $23.80 to buy the required belt from Pep Boys. The gentleman had someone driving him around in a little blazer, business to business, to ask for money. When we didn't give him any money, he left the store. After he left, I thought it was odd that someone would drive him around to ask for money instead of just giving him the money. After all, they would probably end up spending more than $23.80 in gas driving him around town all morning.

Beyond that day, I haven't thought anymore about this incident... until last night. Around 9 pm I was walking out of a store in Delmar and was approached by a gentleman asking for $23.80 to replace the timing belt on his vehicle. Only this time the vehicle was a white Jeep Cherokee sitting near my car. (On the previous occasion the vehicle was supposedly a green Chevy pickup.) There was another man sitting in the Jeep behind the wheel.

There weren't many other cars in the parking lot so I had already noticed the Jeep when I parked my car. The man asking for money had followed me in the store and went straight to the register. I picked up the items I was looking for and walked to the register. The man stepped back and allowed me to go first. I paid for my items and walked out. He approached me as I started my car so I could leave. He knew I had paid with cash because he had allowed me to get in front of him at the register. I told him that I was shopping for someone else and that the money was actually their's, so I could not loan any to him. I also told him that I had seen him 2 weeks ago in the paint store with the same story.

Have you heard this story from anyone else?

13 Firms Receiving Federal Bailout Owe Back Taxes

WASHINGTON – At least 13 firms receiving billions of dollars in bailout money owe a total of more than $220 million in unpaid federal taxes, a key lawmaker said Thursday.

Rep. John Lewis, chairman of a House subcommittee overseeing the federal bailout, said two firms owe more than $100 million apiece.

"This is shameful. It is a disgrace," said Lewis, D-Ga. "We are going to get to the bottom of what is going on here."

The House Ways and Means subcommittee on oversight discovered the unpaid taxes in a review of tax records from 23 of the firms receiving the most money, Lewis said as he opened a hearing on the issue.

"If we looked at all 470 recipients, how much would they owe?" Lewis asked.

He did not name the firms owing back taxes. To date, the Troubled Asset Relief Program has paid out more than $300 billion to private companies, with billions more on the way.

WalMart Text Message Scare Worked

Last night I decided to head up to the North end of Town and check out the WalMart parking lot to see if the notorious Gang Text Message where 3 women were allegedly going to be shot had any affect whatsoever. Clearly, it did.

I would even go so far as to guess that at least half the cars in the parking lot were actually employee vehicles because when I went inside to purchase some items, it was a ghost town inside the store.

After purchasing a couple of items, (why waste the trip) I had the choice of ANY register I wanted with absolutely no one in line.

Anyhow, the next time you get one of these text messages, go to Snopes FIRST. Check and see if there's any credibility and by all means, DO NOT start forwarding the message to everyone and their brother! Use your head and think. Do you really think a Gang would let the Police know they're going to be at two different WalMart's to shoot someone?????

Debbie Campbell Gets The Crown Of All Endorsements

Councilwoman Debbie Campbell was sporing a new brochure last night at Chef Fred's in which Sheriff Mike Lewis endorsed Mrs. Campbell as well as Chris Truitt of the SFD and tucked away inside the brochure was yet another honorable mention from the recently retired Brian Beaver from the Salisbury Police Department.

As usual, Debbie was by far the Candidate that shined the most last night, including the Mayoral Candidates. This just seems to be a natural for Mrs. Campbell. While Mr. Boda has certainly done his homework and seems to be a very nice guy, it would be foolish not to vote for Debbie and keep the checks and balances in order.

Far too many people respect Debbie for her hard work and commitment to the Citizens of Salisbury. Is she perfect, hardly not. Neither are you and I. Muir mentioned something last night about Debbie voting NO 120 times in the past 4 years. Let's break that down, shall we.

52 weeks a year, time 4 years = 208 weeks. Now, they meet every 2 weeks, so that's 104 meetings in the past 4 years, give or take. That would mean Debbie said "NO" an average of ONE time for each meeting. Hmmmmmmm, let's discuss that further.

Debbie also stated last night that not only has she NOT been able to get documents before a Council Meeting, the other Council Members had exactly what she was requesting, yet the Mayor would force her to file a Freedom of Information Act just to get her hands on those documents her co-workers already have and even attempted to CHARGE her for the process and documents. Now doesn't that just make you sick?

Debbie has voted "NO" because for the record she refuses to rubber stamp ANYTHING she is not fully informed about. Now, might this look bad on her particular record? I certainly hope so. I hope it proves that Debbie Campbell clearly has the Citizens best interest at heart and is by far the most honorable person working for the Citizens of Salisbury.

I'll tell you one thing from Joe Albero, you know that one employee you let go and have regretted every year you have been in business? You know that one co-worker you know the company you work for let go and no one has ever been able to properly replace them? That's Debbie Campbell. She's NOT desperate for your vote Folks. She has a fantastic job but if you knew Debbie Campbell like Joe Albero knows Debbie Campbell, that's the hardest working woman I have ever met in my entire life.

Look, I'm not from the Eastern Shore. I'm one of those Corporate Officers that traveled the world and met weekly with Fortune 500 Companies. I've spent time with the #1 Corporate Lawyer in the United States. I've dined at the President of Coca Cola's home. I'm tight with the former VP of Warner Brothers. I could go on and on Folks. I have been there, done that. NO, I am not at all trying to show off. I am simply telling you, I KNOW BUSINESS! I know people! You cannot find another Debbie Campbell and your certainly NOT going to get the professional experience out of Muir Boda, (an employee of WalMart) than you will from another renowned and experienced professional like you do out of Debbie Campbell.

It's that simple. You can Bubbafy Salisbury and we can be the Dukes of Hazard or you can vote for Jim Ireton and Debbie Campbell and use that experience to truly care about your City. Anything less will simply be the Dukes of Hazard.

Oh, let me close with this. Ask Gary Comegys this question. While Mr. Boda challenged Debbie Campbell on saying "NO" to 120 votes over 4 years, why did Gary vote YES to a 15% tax increase BEFORE he ever saw the Budget?????

I'll take Debbie's "NO" answers all day long Muir. She's looking out for the Citizen's best interest.

Proposed pay raise for judges rejected
February 25, 2009

The General Assembly overwhelmingly approved legislation that effectively rejects proposed salary increases for Maryland judges but sets up a mechanism for possible pay raises next year. Lawmakers balked at a recommendation from the Judicial Compensation Commission, an independent panel, that judges get a pay increase of almost $40,000 over the next four years. But the bill calls for the panel to convene in September to consider judicial salary levels, instead of at its next scheduled meeting in four years. The House of Delegates voted 132-to-1 for the bill yesterday, after Senate approval earlier this month. Gov. Martin O'Malley plans to sign the bill, a spokesman said

What Is Reach The Day?

CureSearch Hosts Reach the Day 2009

CureSearch REACH THE DAY 2009 will be the ninth annual gathering of the childhood cancer community in Washington, DC.

The event provides an opportunity for those who care about children with cancer, to share their story with our nation’s leaders, and to impress upon them that critical funding for childhood cancer research is needed.

We come together in one place on one day to raise our voices for all children with cancer and for those who no longer have a voice.

The original gathering in Washington brought together a small group of parents who provided testimony to members of Congress about childhood cancer. At that time, many members of Congress and their staff were unaware that children even got cancer nor did they know that cancer was then and today, remains the number one cause of death from disease in children.
Since that time, the childhood cancer community has been mobilized to make a difference in Congress. Since 2003, the voices and stories of families whose lives have been forever changed by having a child diagnosed with cancer have resulted in more than $12 million in Congressional appropriations to support the research of the Children’s Oncology Group.

In 2008, we celebrated the passage of The Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act, landmark legislation that holds the promise of $30 million dedicated to childhood cancer research.

We have come a great distance but we won’t stop – not until every child with cancer can be guaranteed a cure.

REACH THE DAY 2009 is our opportunity to make sure that this bill gets fully funded and that childhood cancer research continues to receive Congressional appropriations.
Together, our voices are loud and strong. Please join us for Reach the Day.Questions? Contact us at reachtheday@curesearch.org

Tea Party leadership: Going from whistleblower to muscle
Posted: 18 Mar 2009 10:26 AM PDT
In the David Vickers column I linked to below, Vickers says:
What must happen for the American tea party movement to harness all its force, aggression, and overall good intentions for America’s future, and be taken seriously by the power brokers in Washington, D.C., by the mainstream media, and by Main Street?
And how will the movement grow its numbers and influence?

I think it’s past time to start asking, and answering, these questions. Otherwise, I fear the American Tea Party movement’s sweetness — that is to say its genuinely American qualities — will quietly dilute in a tide of bitter change that many Americans simply cannot swallow.
Let me lay the groundwork for answering this question.First, the Tea Party movement came into being as a massive “whistleblowing” organization. What do whistleblowers do, when the company or government agency they work for has become corrupt? Well, they tell other people…people they assume and trust will do something beneficial with the information the whisteblower is giving them.

As whistleblowers, what Tea Partiers are doing is saying, “There’s something very wrong here and you need to pay attention to that.” Most whistleblowers never do more than draw attention to the problem; it is not their expectation that they should solve it, just that they should draw attention to it.

Second, that leads to the question, “Who do Tea Partiers expect to solve the problem to which we are drawing attention?”

I can’t answer that question for anyone else, so I’ll answer it for myself: I believe that entirely new leaders will have to develop out of this movement. This new generation of leaders will include humble people you’ve never heard of before who five years from now will point back to how they got started in politics as the time they organized a Tea Party in their city.
As a Tea Partier, I am protesting the disastrous, dangerous, extreme and divisive Special Interest Budget & Bailout of the Barack Obama administration and his enablers in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

But at the same time I can’t help but notice that our movement came from nowhere. And what that means is that the “leaders” of the conservative movement or the Republican party…any group we might have expected to take the lead in protesting the Obama Disaster were pretty much missing-in-action.

They were collectively missing-in-action around the time that the February 27 Tea Parties were organized. I mean, come on…the first Tea Party was organized in Seattle, Washington by a 29-year-old blogger no one ever heard of before.
But more to the point, one main reason why the Obama administration has a chokehold on American governance and the economy right now is because most of the people who currently run the Republican party and the conservative movement failed to provide attractive compelling leadership. Why would we imagine that those same people are now going to provide the leadership we need?
Leaders and leadership will emerge out of the Tea Party movement when enough of its humble, local organizers come to the sad but necessary conclusion that they are the leaders who will provide the leadership that the entire fiscal conservative movement in the country is missing.
If you’re one of those people and you’re thinking, “You have to be kidding. I have no leadership qualities or experience”, my response is: “Who do you think does? The people that got us here?”
The Tea Party movement: What’s it all about?

What’s brewing next?
The American tea party movement bears more resemblance to a rolling block party than a unified organized movement or cause. And that’s precisely why I love it. These people are nice. They’re smart. They come from all walks of life. And they’re sincere. I’ve met hard-hat wearing construction managers, accountants, school teachers, the unemployed, retirees, even the nicest anarchist couple who are worried about their kids’ futures.
And the numbers of protests and protesters continue to stagger, from the consistent low hundreds to the thousands — in all types of political and meteorological climates.
But I’m wondering what’s next for this two-month-old movement, born of outrage and concern at what is arguably a very sudden and very abrupt left turn in America’s moral and economic direction.
Before discussing the future of the movement, we have to make an attempt to understand and demystify it.
It makes my heart go pitter-pat to be understood and de-mystified.

Later today I’ll be posting a guide here on dealing with the media. If you have anything of wisdom to contribute, please put it in the comments here or send me an email at roxannekramer@gmail.com.
Also, here at “Fresh Tea Daily” we’ve been publishing a series of “How-To” posts. If you want to access all of them in one fell swoop, you can do that here.
Some Tea Party bloggers are posting that “how-to” link on their blogs/websites to give their readers and fellow organizers quick access to it.
There are lots of other places that Tax Day Tea Partiers are providing information to each other. If you’re new and don’t know how to find those places leave a note in the comments.

"If China Calls, Tell Them I'm Not Home."

Times just got even tougher for President Obama - if that's even possible. Not only does he have to deal with the horrific economy, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and pirates, he now has to give China assurances that it's $1 trillion investment in American bonds is safe. But what if China isn't satisfied and wants their money back? Will China start chasing President Obama like a typical bill collector?

As a comedian, I have had to deal with my share of debt collectors in the past so I wanted to offer some advice to President Obama on how to best avoid China if they start trying to collect their trillion dollars:

1. Instruct everyone in the White House that if China calls to say: "I'm not home." There is nothing more of a give away to a debt collector that you are ducking them then when they call looking for you and someone in your house picks up the phone and says: "Yes, President Obama is right here -let me get him." And then after a few minutes of China hearing muffled voices, the person comes back on the phone and says: "You know - I thought the President was here, he must have just stepped out." You are so busted - so plan ahead and avoid this awkwardness.

By the way, if you really want to be daring, when China calls, have the White House operators tell them you moved. If China asks the operator for your forwarding information, they should give them George W. Bush's current address and phone number. After all, he is one who should be paying this debt.

2. If China does get you on the phone, pretend you're somebody else. I understand that you are the President of the United States and not just some guy who owes the student loan people a few thousand dollars, but believe me this one works every time as long as you commit to it. So if one day you pick up the phone and China says: "Hello, President Obama, we need to talk to you about the trillion dollars you owe us," you have to respond calmly and confidently: "Sorry, this isn't the President, it's his roommate Steve." They will probably say: "You sound like President Obama," to which you respond while laughing a little: "Yeah, I get that all the time. No, it's Steve - can I give President Obama a message?" Believe me, this tactic has a proven track record.

3. Don't order any Chinese food to be delivered to the White House until this issue is resolved. Why you might ask? Simple, the Chinese government might substitute the Chinese food delivery guy with a representative of the Chinese government. So while you think you are getting Sesame Chicken for $11.75, instead you are handed a bill for one trillion and eleven dollars and 75 cents. If that does happen, pretend you left the trillion dollars on your desk and go back into the White House and lock the guy out. I know it seems rude but eventually the delivery guy will leave. (Also don't forget to take the sesame chicken in with you before locking the guy out.)

4. If things really get bad, my final advice is to consider alternative sources of income to pay the Chinese government back such as going on a game show like "Who wants to be a millionaire?" or "Deal or No Deal." You could make some good money on those shows. Or what about "Jeopardy?" This game is perfect for you plus when you get to the "Jeopardy Daily Double" and Alex Trebek asks for your wager, you say: "1 trillion dollars." If you win, you have the money to pay China, if you lose, at this point, really what's another trillion dollars in debt.

State Police Issue Public Notice Surrounding Alarming Text Message

Released Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Delaware – The Delaware State Police are currently being inundated with telephone calls regarding a text message that has been circulating throughout Central and Southern Delaware and portions of Maryland.

The context of the message warns of an alleged gang initiation planned in which women will be killed at Wal-Mart and urges all women not to go to Wal-Mart. The DSP Delaware Information and Analysis Center (DIAC) have found no credible information deeming this as a real threat and open source information reveals this as an urban myth.

A Boring Forum, With A Few Nuggets

Wednesday night's candidate forum for Salisbury mayoral and council candidates was quite possibly the most boring event I have ever attended.  It wasn't because of the candidates, the questions were actually better than the typical tripe thrown at events like the PACE forum, the sponsors did a good job.  No, the problem was the format.  You simply can't ask good questions and then try to limit responses to one or two minutes and not give candidates a chance for rebuttal.

Salisbury faces problems.  Citizens should ask a simple question:
Are you better off now than you were six years ago?
If you are a member of that little clique known as the "Friends of Barrie", then the answer is yes.  If you aren't the answer is probably no.  Consequently, citizens should be able to hear the important issues facing the city hashed out rather than being just offered sound bites.
