Government Seems Stunned By Lagging Employment Numbers?

Sometimes I'm amazed by the lackadaisical mentality of our US Government officials.

One would think that our elected government officials would be aware that there is no accurate way to account for so called 'legitimate' employment numbers when there are anywhere from 8 million to 30 million undocumented aliens traversing our Country's streets and seem to be gainfully employed.

It's no wonder that the stimulus doesn't seem to be working. These so called 'undocumented' citizens are basically considered to be 'offline' and thus not subject to basic US reporting standards.

And that leads to another interesting question. Why is the Government so hell bent on going after US businesses for employing these illegals when they - themselves have left our borders so porous that one could smuggle a heard of elephants through the 1400 or so mile stretch. The US businesses shouldn't be held responsible as the fault truly lies with our own Government for allowing the Mexican-American border to be left virtually wide open.

Here locally I was recently informed by an educational administrator that in one local school district the student population is comprised mainly of children whose parents citizen status is deemed to be 'illegal'. Thus, is it the obligation for the ' legal' status citizens to be footing the bill to educate these 'illegal' children? Where was the government when these children appeared in the local classroom? If the situation is this bad here in Maryland. . . .one can only imagine how bad it is along the Mexican-Arizona border towns.

A Golden Retriever showed up on our door steps Sunday night, the 4th of July around 9:00 pm. She was scared and we have taken her in to keep her cool as we are trying to locate the owners. We hoped someone would have called Wicomico County Humane Society, but we didn't have any luck. She is definitely a house dog and well trained and has a wonderful personality. She is wearing a blue collor and she has a fresh hair cut. She was found off Zion Road area.

Gangster, 93, Convicted Of Racketeering Conspiracy

NEW YORK — The elderly underboss of a New York organized crime family has been convicted of racketeering conspiracy.

A jury in Brooklyn federal court found 93-year-old John "Sonny" Franzese of the Colombo crime family and three co-defendants guilty on Wednesday. It was the fifth day of deliberations.

The trial featured the testimony of Franzese's son, a former Colombo associate. The son told jurors his father had used him to pass messages to other gangsters.

The jury also heard Franzese on tape talking about how to shake down strip clubs.

Salisbury Fire Department Ambulance Struck While Responding To Call

At approximately 1238 hours today, Salisbury Fire Department Ambulance Paramedic 16 was dispatched and responding to a medical call for service at the Delmarva Shorebirds Stadium. Paramedic 16 was traveling eastbound on Route 50 in the area of Autumn Grove Court with emergency lights and sirens activated. A vehicle crossing Route 50, entering Autumn Grove Court, collided with Paramedic 16 at that time.
One elderly female patient was transported via Salisbury Fire Department EMS to PRMC for minor injuries. The two Salisbury Fire Department personnel involved were transported to PRMC for evaluation, treated and released.

The vehicle that collided with the ambulance sustained heavy damage. Salisbury Paramedic 16 sustained moderate damage and will be out of service indefinitely until it can be repaired.

City of Salisbury Police Department is handling the investigation.

Should The Birth-Control Pill Be Sold Without A Prescription?

An over-the-counter version has long been called for, but it could soon be available if a group of practitioners and advocates have their way.

When Kelly Blanchard advocated to make oral contraceptives over the counter in a New York Times op-ed two weeks ago, she represented a decades-long movement among clinicians, researchers, and women’s-health advocates to remove prescriptions as a barrier to pill access. As early as 1993, Charlotte Ellertson—founder of Ibis Reproductive Health, of which Blanchard is now president—made a similar argument against the prescription status of oral contraceptives in the American Journal of Public Health.

Now a group of health workers and advocates are taking advantage of a mounting body of research that shows the pill could be safe for nonprescription use. They hope to have a proposal before the FDA within the year and an over-the-counter pill available in five years. And though their work focuses on female reproductive care, it offers a glimpse into what the future of American health care and medication could be.

Public Service Announcement From Salisbury Police Department

Suspect entering residences while victims are sleeping

On July 7, 2010 between 1:48am and 3:00am, officers responded to reported burglaries in the 300 block of Washington St and the 300 block of Princeton Ave.

The suspect in both burglaries is described as: Black Male, tall, wearing a white tee shirt, denim shorts and a red ball cap.

The suspect is believed to have entered the occupied residences by an unsecured door or window. In both incidents the suspect entered the bedroom of the victims as they slept.

At one location nothing appeared to have been stolen. At the second location only a pack of cigarettes was removed from the victim's purse.

The Salisbury Police Department wants to remind all citizens to properly secure their residences when they are not at home but especially so during the night time hours when they are asleep. Citizens should also be vigilant for any suspicious persons in their neighborhoods and report all suspicious person(s) /activity to the Police Department immediately.

The GOB AC has been on and off over the past month and today is the first day that we were notified of what the problem really is. The Central A/C at the Government Office Building in Downtown Salisbury has failed once again. When employees returned to work on Tuesday they came to learn there was no A/C once again and they have been suffering each day since.

With temperatures well above 100 degrees and the City/County facing near bankruptcy, one has to wonder what the laws are in such a case. Some have mentioned several schools without A/C. Mind you, at least they have windows they can open. There's no such thing at the GOB.

Webster Files As A Republican

Here's a guy that just can't make up his mind. When Webster filed his lawsuit against me, he stated in his documents that he was a Worcester County Resident, yet he was living/residing in Somerset County.

Chiefy Webster, (a registered Democrat) has now filed as a Republican to run against Bobby Jones. Clearly Webster was too afraid of an early primary in which he would publicly get spanked, (a figure of speech Chiefy) by Bobby Jones.

The Republican Party should flat out repudiate Webster immediately, he's NOT a Republican! While I hate to admit it, Jones is the better of two evils and it's a shame others didn't step into the race.

The bigger question is, can Alan Webster tell the truth? He certainly won't wear a uniform. He's clueless where he lives. He's blind as a bat and didn't see a thing when Casey Tilghman assaulted Rachel Polk, yet Webster physically removed her off of Mrs. Polk, (according to court testimony) and now he actually thinks he's a Republican. Maybe Julie should run side by side with this guy.

Oh, NO, I will not shave my head to do a Webster interview. Does someone have a really big shiny cue ball I can borrow?

POLLITT ISSUES WICOMICO BURNING BAN

Due to extreme heat and near drought-like conditions, County Executive Richard M. Pollitt, Jr. has placed a burning ban in effect for Wicomico County. All outdoor burning is prohibited with the exception of the use of gas or charcoal grills and the staging of professional fireworks displays. Burning ban violations carry a $500 fine per incident. Burning ban enforcement is administered by the County Planning and Zoning Code Enforcer. Citizens are advised to call Planning and Zoning at 410-548-4860 to report violations.

Pollitt said that all burning permits are voided during the ban and that the Health Department will not be issuing burning permits until further notice.

The Wicomico County Executive has the authority to issue a burning ban for 7 days. Extending the ban involves concurrence by the Wicomico County Council.

Carl Anderton Has His Eyes Set On Bigger And Better Things

While we had announced that Delmar Town Councilman Carl Anderton would throw his hat into the race for Wicomico County Council, he took the time to rethink things and he changed his mind. Carl chose to sit back at this time and set his sights on something he felt would be more advantageous for his Family and his community.

We truly look forward to Carl's future announcement as Salisbury News will endorse this man and his quest to better the Eastern Shore.

Kagan: Harvard Law's $476 Million Dean

Fundraising campaign set record for highest amount raised by a law school

WASHINGTON — One talent Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan displayed in her career climb could create unique ethics questions for her as a justice: the ability to persuade Harvard Law School alumni and other wealthy donors to give hundreds of millions of dollars, more than meeting a daunting fundraising goal that came with her job as dean.

The $476 million total Kagan reached for the "Setting the Standard" campaign was a record not just for her university but for all law schools. Harvard Law sought $400 million to add professors, buildings, programs and financial aid, and Kagan was in charge of pulling it off. She raised about $303 million from 2003-08, after her predecessor had pulled in $170 million toward the goal.

Kagan's prolific fundraising sets her apart from the current Supreme Court justices. To raise that kind of money, Kagan drew on interpersonal skills honed working in the highly competitive environments of the Clinton White House and law school faculties.

WICOMICO ELECTION RACES ARE MOSTLY OVER NOW

County residents have themselves and Sam Vincent’s tragic death to blame for the fact that most of the seats are as good as filled and in all but one contested race most of the candidates are lackluster wannabes. The real disappointment is that the Republicans have once again failed to get a viable candidate for County Executive, just like in 2006. Mr. Pollitt is so unbeatable this time that he could donate his campaign contributions to fund more deputies – are you listening Rick. Since his opponent has promised to have no yard signs, he should reciprocate.

You would expect the countywide races to be the main event with good candidates running neck-to-neck. But besides the County Exec. race a less than stellar candidate is running against Davis Ruark for States Attorney. Not that anyone could beat him, Sheriff Mike Lewis is unopposed, and the bunch of candidates for the two open at-large seats on the County Council are mediocre at best.

It looks like Gail Bartkovich, Joe Holloway and Stevie Prettyman should easily win in their districts of the County Council. So, if Bob Caldwell unseats the incumbent in his district there would be a Republican majority, even if Sheree Sample-Hughes wins in hers, as seems likely.

We see a probable 5-2 (and possible 6-1) Republican majority on the Council, which will be a blessing with Rick Pollitt continuing to be the County Executive. The decisive races will be for the two at-large seats, in which the primary will be significant. The other races seem all but over even at this early date.

MCGRUFF CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF CRIME PREVENTION WITH BOARDWALK BIRTHDAY PARTY

The Ocean City Police Department is celebrating the 30th birthday of one of the most
recognizable crime prevention characters in America, McGruff the Crime Dog. McGruff is
not only famous for his proactive approach to crime prevention, but also his famous “Take
a Bite out of Crime” catchphrase.

On July 14, 2010, the Ocean City Police Department will celebrate the 30 years in which
McGruff taught people across the country how they can help prevent crime. The
celebration, which will take place on North Division Street and the Boardwalk from 10 a.m.
to 1 p.m., will not only feature an appearance from McGruff, but will also focus on crime
prevention and safety issues that affect visitors and residents in Ocean City.

In conjunction with the Ocean City Police Department’s Walk with Wisdom, Bike with
Brains campaign, McGruff will be disseminating information on bicycle and pedestrian
safety. “It’s time for McGruff to take a bite out of birthday cake,” said OCPD Chief
Bernadette DiPino. “McGruff has been an icon for crime prevention for 30 years. We
could not think of a better way to celebrate his accomplishments and continue his crime
prevention efforts than throwing him a birthday party on the boardwalk.”

In addition to birthday cake, the Ocean City Police Department, along with McGruff, will

NARRATIVE:
Starting in May of 2010 through June of 2010 there were several motor vehicle thefts and burglaries in the Whiton area of Worcester County. Through the investigation, information on three suspects was developed. The juvenile suspect was located and arrested in Atlanta, Georgia, who was in possession of one of the reported stolen vehicles.

Members of the Worcester County Bureau of Investigation flew to Atlanta reference this investigation. Information learned from the investigation was there were additional suspects involved. Those leads are being followed up on.

Jacob Derr is currently being housed in the Worcester County Detention Center.

WCBI has obtained a warrant for the arrest of Dennis John Cross, who accompanied the others involved in this crime, but fled on foot when the apprehension occurred in Atlanta Ga. Dennis Cross is believed to be in Maryland or lower Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Can Chris Jakubiak Be Believed?

When former Salisbury councilman Mike Dunn is a candidate’s biggest booster voters should be wary. When a Democrat candidate claims to be fiscally conservative it’s a good bet that voters are being set up for higher taxes AND a big spending increase. When both circumstances merge, voters should run to the nearest polling place and re-elect Maryland Sen. Richard Colburn (R-37).

Chris Jakubiak is a nice guy. He wants to represent the people of District 37 in the Maryland Senate. If you read is op-ed in Monday’s Daily Times you would think that this guy has some pretty good ideas. If you live in District 37, do yourself a favor and dig a little deeper. Here is Jakubiak’s plan:

Spending mandates -- public schools, for example -- must be tied to revenues. I want pay-as-you-go spending and caps on mandated entitlement spending.

Dedicated funds such as for transportation and farms must be protected. When the gas taxes we pay are diverted from roads to the general fund, our trust is shaken. It is actually worse; rather than funding needed projects with revenues raised for that purpose, the state issues bonds and increases debt.

State employee pensions and health insurance must be reformed and their costs reduced. Responsibility to the people who protect our quality of life and teach our kids requires a responsible and sustainable approach to employee benefits.

Cuts in discretionary spending, excluding veteran services and public safety, must be on the table.

Reforms must expand economic growth, not contract it. Tax increases that contract growth are counterproductive. We cannot have sustained economic growth on the Eastern Shore and state deficits at the same time. We must now decide.

Sounds great. Note Jakubiak’s view on taxes: Tax increases that contract growth are counterproductive. Come on Chris! ALL tax increases contract growth. We have a hint that a Senator Jakubiak wouldn’t have a problem with higher taxes; he’ll just claim that the tax increases he votes for don’t contract growth.

“Cuts in discretionary spending, excluding veteran services and public safety, must be on the table”? I hope so. In fact, EVERY line item in the budget should be on the table. There is a lot of money wasted in Maryland under the heading of “public safety”. For starters, why do taxpayers pay state police to commute to their jobs? Why do state police officers who do not use a car as part of their job get a take home car anyway? The list goes on and on Chris; far beyond those neat sounding sound bites.

Tying spending mandates to revenue isn’t a bad idea, but only if you are willing to reform the underlying program. Jakubiak is telling some groups that we need to spend more on education and hugging trees while telling us that he’s some kind of fiscal hawk. If Chris is serious about cutting costs AND providing a world class education to our children he would be advocating an end to teacher tenure, cutting bureaucracy, providing merit pay and increasing the number of charter schools. Don’t see any of that in his platform.

Like I said, Chris Jakubiak is a nice guy. I just think that the folks who live in District 37 deserve a senator who can work to solve problems rather than spout platitudes.

Solar Plane Takes Off For 24-Hour Test Flight

GENEVA — An experimental solar-powered plane whose makers hope to one day circle the globe using only energy collected from the sun took off for its first 24-hour test flight Wednesday.

The plane with its 262.5-foot (80-meter) wingspan left Payerne airfield in Switzerland shortly before 7 a.m. (0500 GMT; 1 a.m. EDT) after overcoming an equipment problem that delayed a previous attempt, the Solar Impulse team said.

Clear blue skies mean the prototype aircraft will be able to soak up plenty of solar energy as it flies over the Jura mountains to the west of the Swiss Alps.

By midmorning pilot Andre Borschberg was cruising at 9,850 feet (3,000 meters), trying to avoid low-level turbulence and thermal winds that are frequent in the mountains.

He will take the plane to an altitude of 27,900 feet (8,500 meters) by Wednesday evening, when a decision will be made whether to continue through the night using solar power stored in its batteries.

BP Gets U.S. Demand For Notice Of Asset Sales

Order underlines the U.S. government's intense scrutiny of BP

LONDON — BP PLC confirmed Wednesday that it received a demand from U.S. authorities for advance notice of any asset sales or significant cash transfers.

The Financial Times reported that U.S. Assistant Attorney General Tony West, who heads the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, wrote to Rupert Bondy, BP's general counsel, on June 23. Normally the U.S. Justice Department does not require advance notice of such deals.

"We have received the letter, and have not yet responded," said BP press officer Sheila Williams. "We will be responding in due course."

She declined to say whether the Justice Department had set a deadline.

In District 38B, there are FOUR Republicans vying for the two slots to replace outgoing Del. Jim Mathias (who is running for the Maryland Senate in District 38) and incumbent Del. Norm Conway. Probably the biggest shocker is the number of individuals filing for the GOP Central Committees in both Wicomico and Somerset.

Salisbury News Breaks Record Day By TWO Visits

Its no joke, we broke our record day by TWO visits! Yesterday's video has been seen, (so far) by more than double our normal views and there's no question in my mind many more will watch the interview during the day today as well.

I received a number of phone calls and e-mail messages yesterday from people cracking up and enjoying the show. We're glad so many of you enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed those who called and told me they had to watch it a second time.

Manson Family Member Van Houten Denied Parole Again

(CNN) -- California's parole board Tuesday refused to release onetime Manson family acolyte Leslie Van Houten, finding the 60-year-old remains dangerous more than four decades after the group's Southern California murder spree.

The board found that Van Houten "still poses a risk to society," spokesman Luis Patino said. The decision marks the 19th time that she has been denied parole, and she won't be eligible again until 2013, Patino said.

Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Patrick Sequeira praised the decision.

"The crime itself was absolutely horrendous -- the brutal slaughter of two individuals in their home, in a cruel and very horrifying manner," said Sequeira. "It is our position that she never really has fully accepted responsibility for her crimes."

BP's Ex-CEO Gets British Government Job

John Browne, who ran BP from 1995 and 2007 and whom critics fault for cutting corners on safety, has been tapped to help the U.K. government slash its spending

Lord Browne, the former head of BP (BP) who was once reputed to be Tony Blair's favourite businessman, has been brought back into the heart of Government to help find the £6.2bn in public spending cuts promised in the Budget.

One of his first tasks will be to help the Cabinet Office minister, Francis Maude, recruit a team of business leaders in the hope of placing one in every government department, to bring a business culture to Whitehall.

Lord Browne was one of Britain's most-admired business leaders in his heyday, with a gift for getting on well with politicians. He was nicknamed the "Sun King," and was so close to the former prime minister, Tony Blair, that it was suggested that an appropriate name for the company he headed would be "Blair's Petroleum."

But critics have suggested that his determination to bear down on costs at BP, where he was chief executive in 1995-2007, contributed to the company's patchy safety record. In 2005, while he was in charge, there was an explosion at the Texas City oil refinery, in which 15 people died and 170 were injured, for which the company was fined $87m (£58m). An internal report found that BP employees had made "surprising" and "deeply disturbing" mistakes that caused the fire, though the company was praised for the speed with which it accepted responsibility for the disaster.

Officer Pleads Guilty In Bank Robbery

A former Prince George's County Police officer accused of ordering an accomplice to break into a bank pleaded guilty in the case on Tuesday.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland said former officer Eddie Lee Smith Jr. entered the plea as part of a deal with prosecutors.

According the the plea bargain, Smith met with an accomplice named Earl Blake on June 9, 2009, and drove Blake to a SunTrust Bank branch in Temple Hills in his police cruiser. Smith reportedly gave Blake a power saw and other tools to break into the bank's ATM safe, which contained about $40,500.

Smith waited in his cruiser, in uniform, near the bank, while Blake started to cut the safe open, according to the plea agreement. A fire alarm went off during the attempted heist, and when firefighters responded, then-Officer Smith allegedly tried to assure firefighters that the building was secure. Smith ended up leaving the scene without any further contact with fire officials or his dispatcher, according to authorities.

Prince George's County Chief of Police Roberto Hylton on Tuesday said he's looking forward to Smith's swift prosecution.

"Bad cops have no place in our profession," Hylton said. "I absolutely will not tolerate wrongdoing by any member of this agency."

Both Blake and Smith were eventually arrested in the robbery attempt. Smith, 42, pleaded guilty to breaking into a bank with intent to commit felony bank larceny. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for October. Blake, 53, pleaded guilty to the same charge and will be sentenced in August.

Hard Times For Illinois, But Not For Governor's Staff

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has handed out raises — some of more than 20 percent — to his staff while proclaiming a message of "shared sacrifice" and planning spending cuts of $1.4 billion because the state is awash in debt.

The Democrat has given 43 salary increases averaging 11.4 percent to 35 staffers in the past 15 months, according to an Associated Press analysis of records obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.

They include a $24,000-a-year bump for the man promoted to shepherd the state through the fiscal storm. Budget Director David Vaught got a 20 percent raise to bring his pay to $144,000 in October when he moved to his new position from Quinn's staff, where he was a senior adviser.

Quinn said Tuesday the raises did not prevent him from making deep spending cuts in his office.

"Overall, the amount of money spent by taxpayers on the governor's office is significantly lower today than it was when I took office," he said at a Chicago news conference planned for him to sign legislation to speed up the processing of evidence in rape cases.

Quinn said he'd cut spending in the office by 25 percent since he took over 17 months ago. But his staff said spending was down 10 percent in the budget year that just ended, with plans for another 25 percent reduction this year.

They did not specify what had been cut.

Lawmakers, whom Quinn has asked to raise income taxes and borrow billions to meet its obligations for employee pensions reacted with skepticism and anger.

"It's insulting," said Rep. Jack Franks, a Woodstock Democrat who voted "no" on Quinn's proposal to borrow $3.7 billion for the pension payment that the House OK'd but Senate has not.

Soldier Loses Home While Deployed To Iraq

A Soldier serving in Iraq lost his Frisco home to foreclosure over late homeowners' association dues, renewing a debate over the power of HOAs in Texas.

The case, which has boiled over to involve federal judge, a publicist and death threats, began when Michael and May Clauer lost their $315,000 home to foreclosure in May 2008 after falling behind on their association dues.

The Heritage Lakes Homeowners Association was initially owed $977.55 and sent multiple notices by certified mail demanding payment. All went unanswered, said David Margulies, spokesman for the association and its management company, Select Management.
The problem, according to a lawyer for the Clauers, was that Michael Clauer -- U.S. Army National Guard Capt. Michael Clauer -- was deployed to Iraq.

His wife, suffering from depression over her husband's absence, had let mail pile up and didn't open any of the certified letters. May Clauer and her parents owned the house mortgage-free.

Barbara Hale, who is representing the Clauers in a lawsuit to get their house back, argues her clients are protected from foreclosure by the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. The federal law protects those on active duty from certain financial and legal obligations, including foreclosure, without a court proceeding. Capt. Clauer was on active duty from Feb. 15, 2008, to Oct. 9, 2009.
"This is so outrageous," Hale said. "There's a strong opposition to the power that HOAs are granted in Texas that goes beyond Capt. Clauer and his military status."

Obama: U.S.-Israel Bond 'Unbreakable'

In an effort to soothe a strained relationship, President Obama met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office Tuesday, telling reporters that the bond shared by the two countries is "unbreakable" and hitting back against media reports of a rift between the two men.

Mr. Netanyahu's previous visit to meet Mr. Obama in March was conducted entirely behind closed doors, with neither a working lunch nor any availability to the press, which is a traditional staple when a head of state visits. That prompted some observers to conclude Mr. Obama sought to punish Mr. Netanyahu for allowing an expansion of Jewish settlements.

Both men rejected reports of a chilly relationship, with Mr. Obama saying an Israeli reporter was "wrong" in describing Mr. Obama as "distancing" himself from Israel, and Mr. Netanyahu similarly saying such reports are "just flat wrong."

'Ridiculous' Lawsuit Won't Nix Arizona Law On Illegals

Top Republicans Tuesday blasted the Obama administration's lawsuit against Arizona's controversial illegal-immigration law as "nothing short of ridiculous."

Immigration law experts tell Newsmax that the administration has little chance of prevailing against the Arizona statute, which empowers police to arrest illegal aliens once another violation has occurred.

After weeks of speculation, the Department of Justice on Tuesday filed a 22-page lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Arizona.

President Obama has charged the law could contribute to racial profiling. "In the United States of America, no law-abiding person, be they an American citizen, a legal immigrant or a visitor or tourist from Mexico, should ever be subject to suspicion simply because of what they look like," Obama said when Mexican President Felipe Calderon visited the White House in May.

Apparently unable to substantiate the racial-profiling allegation -- the Arizona law doesn't even take effect until July 29 -- the administration instead focused its lawsuit narrowly on the Supremacy Clause in the U.S. Constitution.

The Supremacy Clause says federal laws take precedent over state laws. Article 6, clause 2 of the U.S. Constitution states that laws made "under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any state to the contrary notwithstanding."

Supporters of the Arizona law, however, say it is merely intended to enforce federal laws already on the books.

“The Justice Department’s complaint that Arizona has somehow preempted federal law is nothing short of ridiculous,” Republican Study Committee Chairman Tom Price, R-Ga., said in a statement to the media. “Arizona has simply reinforced longstanding federal laws, whose enforcement the Obama administration is now actively seeking to prevent… States like Arizona should not have to act on their own, but Washington’s decades of neglect for border security leave them no choice. The federal government should be vigorously securing the border, not suing the State of Arizona.”

No Independence Day celebration is complete without a heartfelt “Thank You” to the men and women who serve in our Armed Forces. They dedicate their lives to defending our great country and the principles of freedom and liberty on which it was founded. In order to perform their job, however, the members of our military need to be given the right resources at the right time. Unfortunately, the House of Representatives took steps last week to prevent that from happening.

Several months ago, Congress began the process of approving supplemental funding for operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. And after significant delay, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates pleaded with Congress to approve this funding by July 4. If that did not occur, he warned that the Pentagon would be forced to do “stupid things” to avoid disrupting military operations. Yet when House Democrats brought the legislation to the floor last Thursday, they tacked on tens of billions of dollars for a bailout of public sector union employees and other totally unrelated spending – sending the bill back to the Senate instead of to the President’s desk.

With that reckless decision, House Democrats ensured that our military would not get the resources it needs by July 4. It is simply unacceptable that the same people who insist on giving terrorists a timetable for U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan could not stick to a timetable for funding our troops in harm’s way. Our men and women in uniform deserve better.

Question For Local Landlords

I really don't have a lot that I could complain about but today I have 2 serious questions for landlords. First, let me say a bit about myself. I am single and live alone with my dog. I have a great full time job ( ONE income) and although things may be tough at times, I can manage by being careful. Here are my questions. I do everything that I can to cut down on electric, ok, before those who like to condemn, except for my computer, it costs less to read than it does to watch news on TV. I would love to be able to wash my laundry and hang it out on a clothes line but they are not permitted here so I have no choice but to scatter a few things around the place and still have to use the dryer which uses electric which is money I could save. Also, it costs a lot in electric to use oven/microwave and I would love to bar-b-que outside but again, this is also not allowed. I am not talking about the ugly, sometimes, lopsided umbrella clothes lines nor am I talking about a Hibachi which I am smart enough to know that any small grill on a porch can be dangerous. And don't even suggest I get rid of my dog!

Ok..I said my rant and actually feel better for saying it. Thanks! As an addition, I would also like to add that my windows face North, no direct sunlight and a big tree keeps my place cool so AC is only used when necessary and at night's because of the humidity. Turned off before work and when I come home, the place is still very cool inside. Please Landlords, help those of us who ARE paying on time and not bothering you with things like, I hate the color of my walls!

Illegal Immigration Costs U.S. $113 Billion A Year, Study Finds

The cost of harboring illegal immigrants in the United States is a staggering $113 billion a year -- an average of $1,117 for every “native-headed” household in America -- according to a study conducted by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).

The study, a copy of which was provided to FoxNews.com, “is the first and most detailed look at the costs of illegal immigration ever done,” says Bob Dane, director of communications at FAIR, a conservative organization that seeks to end almost all immigration to the U.S.

FAIR's opponents in the bitter immigration debate describe the organization as "extremist," though it is regularly called upon to testify before Congress.

Groups that support immigration reform immediately attacked FAIR's report and pointed out that it is the polar opposite of the Perryman Report, a 2008 study that found illegal immigration was actually a boon to the American economy. It estimated that illegal immigrants add $245 billion in Gross Domestic Product to the economy and account for 2.8 million jobs.

The FAIR report comes as President Obama moves immigration reform to the top of his agenda, and it is likely to be a rallying point for those who oppose the president. At a speech Thursday at American University in Washington, D.C., Obama argued that the entire immigration system is broken and needs sweeping reforms. Among the changes he said are needed is "a path for [farm] workers to earn legal status," which the president's critics called an opening for a new amnesty program.

FAIR's report argues that there are two choices in the immigration debate: “One choice is pursuing a strategy that discourages future illegal migration and increasingly diminishes the current illegal alien population through denial of job opportunities and deportations. The other choice,” it says, “would repeat the unfortunate decision made in 1986 to adopt an amnesty that invited continued illegal migration.”

The report states that an amnesty program wouldn’t appreciably increase tax revenue and would cost massive amounts in Social Security and public assistance expenses. An amnesty “would therefore be an accentuation of the already enormous fiscal burden,” the report concludes.

The single largest cost to the government of illegal immigration, according to the report, is an estimated $52 billion spent on schooling the children of illegals. “Nearly all those costs are absorbed by state and local governments,’ the report states.

Moreover, the study’s breakdown of costs on a state-by-state basis shows that in states with the largest number of illegals, the costs of illegal immigration are often greater than current, crippling budget deficits.

During the month of June 2010, officers of the Salisbury Police Department’s Safe Streets Team conducted saturation patrols in high crime areas of the City in conjunction with members of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, Fruitland Police Department and the Maryland State Police.

On July 5, 2010 at approximately12:30am, an officer was on patrol in the parking lot of the WaWa convenience store located on S Salisbury Blvd. The officer observed two females involved in a physical altercation at the gas pump island. After being separated by friends, the Victim sat down next to one of the pumps. Bryant went to her vehicle, started the engine, placed the vehicle in drive and then drove into the Victim as she sat on the ground. The Victim tried to get up but was struck again by Bryant pinning the Victim under the vehicle. The officer was able to intercede and arrest Bryant. The Victim was removed from under the vehicle without injury. Bryant was released to Central Booking. #201000026765

Officers of the Salisbury Police Department made 16 arrests after a month-long investigation during June, into the illegal sale of controlled dangerous substances. Salisbury Police targeted high crime areas throughout the City with a variety of uniformed and undercover operations. Officers of the SPD Safe Streets Team were assisted in the investigation by members of the Maryland State Police, Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office and Ocean City Police Department.

In Need Of A Dog Crate

I happen to be talking with a waitress today who was concerned about her dog she keeps chained outside. ( I know----I don't believe in chaining either ) She needs a crate to be able to bring him inside in this extreme heat. The dog is about 3 yrs, 55 lbs. & has had no training for inside the home.

At present time, the dog has dug a hold in the ground & stays there. There are no
shade trees in her yard----there is a pen----uncovered. The owner is a single Mother with 4 children-----she continually texed her13 yr old son to spray the dog down & to check on him. She is most definitely financially strapped. She can't put him inside without a crate for fear he would damage her rental home. If there is someone out there who knows of someone who would donate a crate to her ---- my husband & I will take it up to Seaford & set it up.

We are so hoping someone can help this young lady with her dog.

SEARCH UNDERWAY FOR YOUTH WHO LEFT JUVENILE FACILITY

(Cumberland, MD) – State and local police are searching for a teenager who left a state juvenile facility in Western Maryland Sunday night.

The escaped youth is identified as Edwin R. Cortez, 16, who was in the custody of the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. He was housed at the Green Ridge Youth Center in Flintstone, Md.

Cortez is described as a Hispanic male, 5’9” tall, weighing 143 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. His left ear is pierced and he has a tattoo on his left hand between his thumb and first finger. When he escaped, he was wearing blue jeans and a white t-shirt. He may have had a change of clothes with him that included a pair of khaki pants.

Cortez may be driving a white 2001 Toyota Corolla with Maryland registration 6CLE82. This vehicle was reported stolen Sunday night from a Flintstone residence not far from the facility.

At about 8:30 p.m. on July 4, 2010, Maryland State Police at the Cumberland Barracks were notified by youth center staff that Cortez had just left and was last seen heading north toward I-68. Troopers responded to the area and joined in a search already underway by facility staff.

The search was extended throughout the region. Troopers from the Cumberland Barracks and the State Police K-9 Unit were joined by law enforcement personnel from the Allegany County Bureau of Police and Natural Resources Police. A State Police helicopter also conducted an aerial search. A lookout for Cortez was provided to police throughout the state and surrounding area.

The Maryland State Police State Apprehension Team is coordinating the continuing search. Cortez may be en route to the Montgomery County area. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call police.

Josh Dowdy Picks Up 13th Save of the Season

Salisbury, Md. – Luis Noel tossed eight strong innings as the Shorebirds topped the Hickory Crawdads 3-1 in game three at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Tuesday night. Noel is just the second Shorebirds starting pitcher to finish the eighth inning. Kenny Moreland went through eighth on June 19 against Lexington.

The ‘Birds plated the first run in the bottom of the first. Brian Conley hit a lead off single to right field. After a sacrifice bunt by Mike Mooney advanced Conley to third, he scored on a line drive single to left by Tyler Townsend.

In the fourth inning, the Shorebirds went on the offensive. Townsend hit a lead off single up the middle. Then, Kieron Pope blasted his fifth homer of the season over the left field wall to give the Shorebirds a 3-0 lead.

The Crawdads plated their lone run in the fifth inning. Mike Ortiz hit a lead off homer over the right field wall.

Luis Noel stifled the Crawdads all night to earn his fourth win of the season. In eight strong innings, he allowed only five hits. Noel also fanned 10 batters.

Robbie Erlin was pinned with the loss in 3.2 innings pitched. He allowed six hits and three runs.

The Shorebirds and Crawdads meet in the finale on Wednesday morning at 10:35 a.m. RHP Kenny Moreland makes the start.

SHOREBIRDS GAME NOTES: 7/6 vs. Hickory

PREVIEW: The Shorebirds aim to get back in the series after a 2-0 loss last night to the Hickory Crawdads. The Shorebirds were shutout for a fourth time yesterday. Delmarva managed only four hits against the combination of Braden Tullis and Joseph Ortiz.

CONLEY GOES YARD: For the first time since April 30 (51 games played), Conley belted a home run in game one, his second of the year. Conley went 178 at-bats between homers.

LARGEST CROWD: On July 4th, 8,416 fans flocked to Perdue Stadium for the Independence Day Bash. It was the largest crowd of the season. The previous high for ‘10 was 7,759 fans on May 22. The largest crowd in 2009 was 8,981 on August 8.

NINE TRIPLES FOR BUMBRY: Two nights ago, Steve Bumbry recorded his team leading ninth triple of the season. He is the first Shorebirds player to record nine triples in a season since Nate Spears notched 11 in 2004. B.J. Littleton holds the single-season record for triples with 18 in 2001.
