Dad protests Islamic lessons at school

A history book used in school districts across the state is sparking controversy in Seminole County.

A parent called 9 Investigates after finding out his son was learning too much about the Islamic religion in a public classroom.

Ron Wagner read from part of his son's world history book, "There is no god, but God. Muhamad is the messenger of God."

Wagner is not reading the Five Pillars of Islam from the Quran, but rather his son's 10th-grade world history book from Lyman High School.

Laura Ingraham Mocks Pelosi’s MSNBC Interview: ‘They Are Out Of Lines’

Last week, Nancy Pelosi granted an interview to MSNBC anchor Alex Wagner. That interview gave the phrase “softball interview” a new meaning. In fact, if the balls that Alex Wagner threw at Nancy Pelosi were any softer, they would be bubbles.

This morning on Fox & Friends, conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham couldn’t resist the urge to poke fun at the interview.

After running a clip in which Pelosi stated, repeatedly, that Republicans disrespect women, Ingraham was asked to comment about it.

She yawned.

It’s fair to say that’s everybody’s attitude towards Lady Pelosi these days. She’s boring, tiresome, and out of ideas.

Half-million U.S. women mutilated in barbaric practice

UNITED NATIONS – A disturbing Population Research Bureau report indicates the number of women in the United States at risk of ritual female genital mutilation has doubled in 10 years, in tandem with the increase in immigration from Muslim countries in Africa.

The practice, also known as female circumcision, is common in Muslim countries in Africa and the Middle East.

The report from the bureau indicates more than half-a-million women in the U.S. may have already been mutilated or could soon have the procedure done to them.

That’s up from 227,000 in 2000. A 1997 NIH report placed the number of women at risk at 168,000, based on 1990 census data.

JUST IN: NBC Suspends Brian Williams for 6 Months Without Pay

Brian Williams, the embattled NBC news anchor whose credibility plummeted after he acknowledged exaggerating his role in a helicopter incident in Iraq, was suspended for six months without pay, the network said Tuesday night.

Lester Holt will continue to substitute for Mr. Williams now, but finding a permanent successor will be a major problem for the network, which was not anticipating having to replace the anchor of its “Nightly News” broadcast for some time. In December, Mr. Williams signed a new five-year contract reported to be worth $10 million a year.

“This was wrong and completely inappropriate for someone in Brian’s position,” Deborah Turness, the president of NBC News, said in an internal memo.

California Senate Passes Bill to Indoctrinate Children on President Obama

Once upon a time, schools taught children about the brave founding fathers. They taught kids about the historical bravery and wisdom of Abraham Lincoln. The history books were filled with stories from America’s past that made it clear where we had come from, instilling the values and virtues that conspired to make this the greatest country the world has ever known.

Sadly, those days seem to be behind us. A new bill out of California has just passed a final Assembly vote, encouraging state schools to begin teaching about the historical significance of President Barack Hussein Obama. A curriculum that would theoretically go into effect even before Obama is out of office will, the bill hopes, teach students about 9 wonderful aspects of this significant administration.

Naturally, the bulk of the outlined recommendations are geared towards illuminating the racial context of the 2008 election. Democrat Senator Holly Mitchell says that it’s important for students to learn about “overcoming our nation’s past to elect our first black president.”

The recommendations are outlined as follows:

(a) The election of Barack Hussein Obama to the office of President of the United States was a historic step in the effort towards equality in the United States.
(b) Before the Civil Rights Movement, intimidation and physical violence prevented millions of African Americans from voting and alienated them from the electoral process.
(c) The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a civil rights victory that inspired more ethnic minorities to register to vote and pursue elected office.
(d) Barack Obama attended Harvard Law School where he became the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review.
(e) After law school, Barack Obama worked to fulfill the spirit of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by encouraging people to register to vote.
(f) Barack Obama was first elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996 and to the United States Senate in 2004.
(g) Senator Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States and first African American President on November 4, 2008, and was sworn in on January 20, 2009.
(h) In honor of his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples, President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
(i) President Obama was reelected on November 6, 2012, and was sworn in for his second term on January 20, 2013.

Drew Peterson charged with plotting to kill prosecutor

Drew Peterson has been charged with trying to hire someone to kill the prosecutor who led the 2012 trial that resulted in the former police officer being convicted of killing his third wife.

State and local prosecutors said on Monday that Peterson is charged with solicitation of murder for hire and solicitation for murder after allegedly trying to hire someone to kill Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow while Peterson was in prison.

The charges relate to the time period September 2013 to December 2014 and a preliminary hearing is set for March 3.

The 61-year-old is serving a 38-year prison sentence at the Menard Correctional Center in Menard, Illinois, after being convicted in the 2004 drowning death of Kathleen Savio.

Federalsburg a likely home for new enterprise zone

FEDERALSBURG — The Town of Federalsburg looks to be the likely home of a new “enterprise zone,” a state-designated area that offers tax breaks on improvements to commercial and industrial property in an effort to encourage new businesses to move in and existing businesses to expand, creating jobs in the process.

After a public hearing at Federalsburg’s regular meeting Monday, Feb. 2, officials from both the town and Caroline County passed resolutions, lending their support to an application to be submitted to the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development by the Caroline Economic Development Corporation.

CEDC Executive Director Angela Visintainer said at the town meeting the enterprise zone program is a nicely-designed package, with no downside for the local government.

Error in application negates $875K federal grant to fund new Frederick police officers

The discovery of a clerical error that inflated the city's crime numbers on a Frederick police grant application dashed the city's hopes of receiving $875,000 in federal funds.

The grant, part of the U.S. Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services hiring fund, was to be used to fund 75 percent of the salaries and benefits of seven new city police officers, according to the city's initial application. The grant was awarded in September based on the inflated numbers, but was withdrawn Jan. 16 after city staff reported the error in December, said acting chief Capt. Patrick Grossman.

Fortunately, the city was still waiting to receive the grant funds when the error was discovered, Grossman said.

“We never got to that point in the process where we even started receiving funds or anything,” Grossman said. “... Internally we were completing strategic staffing meetings on how we would use [the funds], but we never got any further than that.”

Additional Arrests Made in Appliance Thefts and Burglaries in Sussex County

Delmar, DE - State Police Detectives have arrested two more subjects and are looking for another in connection with numerous burglaries and theft of appliances over the past year.

During the course of the investigation, detectives learned through witness accounts thatSylvester Hicks, 31 of Lincoln (Photo attached-maroon sweatshirt), was the head of an organized criminal enterprise responsible for burglarizing and stealing appliances or construction materials from new construction or model homes. Hicks would work with subjects who committed the burglaries and then have them transport the stolen property back to his residence located on Foreman Avenue in Lincoln.

Around 3:00 a.m., Monday February 9, 2015, detectives began a surveillance operation on a Chevrolet Express van that was known to be used during these criminal activities. The van was spotted leaving Clayton Homes in Delmar, Delaware, when members of the Sussex County Governor’s Task Force initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle in the area of Crooked Road, Lincoln. The two occupants jumped from the van in an attempt to flee and the operator, who was later identified as Carlos L. Daniels, 29 of Lincoln (Photo attached-dark blue shirt), was apprehended a short time later without incident. The second subject (depicted in the surveillance photo attached), was able to flee undetected. Upon searching the van, detectives were able to recover numerous appliances that were stolen from Clayton Homes earlier that morning.

Troopers then responded to Sylvester Hicks residence where he was taken into custody without incident. A search warrant was conducted on the premise where detectives recovered over 20 appliances linked to multiple burglaries in Sussex County.

Sylvester Hicks and Carlos Daniels were transported back to Troop 4 in Georgetown where they were both charged with Racketeering, nine counts of Burglary 3rd, three counts of Theft over $1,500, two counts of Conspiracy 2nd, and Criminal Mischief. They were arraigned at JP2 and both committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $60,000.00 secured bond.

Detectives are continuing their investigation into the burglaries and thefts and additional charges may be forthcoming.

If anyone has any information in reference to the unidentified pictured subject they are asked to contact Detective J. Rowley at 302-856-5850 ext. 223. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, via the internet atwww.tipsubmit.com, or by sending an anonymous tip by text to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword "DSP."

Ocean City Fire Department Responds to Fire at Southern Brew Pub

On Tuesday, February 10, at approximately 9:51 a.m., Ocean City Communications received a call for a fire at Lazy Lizard Brew Pub. Ocean City Fire Department personnel responded to the scene, which is located at 25 North Philadelphia Avenue, and found fire coming from the building’s interior.

Arriving units were advised that people were trapped in the building, resulting in two immediate rescues. Fire Department personnel battled the fire, which escalated to a third alarm, for over two hours. Shortly after noon, the fire department had the fire under control. Assisting the OCFD with the call were units from Berlin, Bethany Beach, Showell, Ocean Pines and Roxana. Additional fire department personnel from mutual agencies also assisted with calls in the district during the incident.

Three victims were treated on scene for non-life threatening injuries and later transported to area hospitals, including two members of the Ocean City Fire Department. One additional patient was treated and released on the scene. The initial damage assessment indicates that the majority of the fire damage was on the third floor.

The Ocean City Fire Marshal’s Office, with assistance from the Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office, is currently investigating the cause of the fire, which is unknown at this time. Anyone with information regarding the fire is asked to contact the Fire Marshal’s Office at 410.289.8780.

Most governments have not complied with open meetings training law

More than 60 percent of the state's local governments have not complied with a 2013 state law requiring training in Maryland's Open Meetings Act.

Monica Johnson, chairwoman of the state's Open Meetings Compliance Board, said the numbers reveal there is "lots of room for improvement."

"I really think that folks want to do the right thing to the extent they know what it is and how to do it," she said. "Part of the key is getting the message out that this is the law of the land. Sometimes it takes time."

State legislators passed a law in 2013 requiring all government boards, commissions, task forces or other bodies that fall under the requirements of the Open Meetings Act to designate a person to take a training class. Under the law, governments were required to notify the state attorney general's office of the person identified for training and when the training was completed. Governments had six months from the effective date of the law, Oct 1, 2013, to comply.

Rice: Climate Change, Gay Rights Part of National Security Strategy

Speaking at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., on Friday, White House National Security Advisor Susan Rice described the terrorist threat from radical Islam as “violent extremism” and said part of President Barack Obama’s national security strategy is fighting “the very real threat of climate change" and promoting gay rights.

Rice’s remarks followed the release on Friday of Obama’s 2015 National Security Strategy, which updates a similar document released by the White House in 2010.

While saying the radical Islamic group ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) is an offshoot of al Qaeda and that the United States is committed to “countering the corrosive ideology of violent extremism,” Rice called for a “sense of perspective” when assessing that threat.

“Too often, what’s missing here in Washington is a sense of perspective,” Rice said. “Yes, there is a lot going on.

“Still, while the dangers we face may be more numerous and varied, they are not of the existential nature we confronted during World War II or during the Cold War,” Rice said. “We cannot afford to be buffeted by alarmism in a nearly instantaneous news cycle.”

Trapping: Delmarva’s Oldest Tradition Subject of Upcoming Event

The first program in Westside Historical Society’s Saving Our Traditions series will explore the Eastern Shore’s oldest tradition since settlement began – trapping our marshes.

On March 8, at 2:00 on Sunday afternoon, expert trapper Morgan Bennett will talk about this bit of the area’s cultural history. Trapping was the business of this area’s very first European settlers, who made deals with the Native Americans living here to buy all the pelts they could harvest from the marshes and creeks. Those pelts became the area’s first “cash crop,” but trapping has continued to be a source of income, recreation, food, and appreciation of our very special environment for the 350+ years since those first settlers arrived.

Morgan Bennett is not only an expert trapper, but a passionate advocate of preserving our marshes and wetlands, and of the wildlife that lives there. He is well known to local preservationists and has appeared at many local events. He will bring a collection of a variety of fur pelts, traps and other objects and share his insights and experience with the audience. In addition, this series of programs focusing on Saving Our Traditions also invites the audience to bring in items they might have, related to the topic being discussed, and ask for more insights or evaluations of their objects. This is a good chance to find out more about that stuffed albion muskrat, or the pelt drying boards, or weird traps you might have in your collection! There is no admission charged to attend the program, but a $10 fee is charged per item for an evaluation.

This program will be held in the historic Barren Creek Springs Church building at 110 Main Street in Mardela Springs MD. And will begin at 2:00 pm on March 8. Parking is available in the church yard and across the street. For more information, email us at westsidehistorical@gmail.com , or phone 410-742-8047.

Gallup CEO: I Might 'Disappear' For Exposing Jobs Data

Years of unending news stories on U.S. government programs of surveillance, rendition and torture have apparently chilled the speech of even top business executives in the United States.

Recently Jim Clifton, the Chairman and CEO of Gallup, an iconic U.S. company dating back to 1935, told CNBC that he was worried he might “suddenly disappear” and not make it home that evening if he disputed the accuracy of what the U.S. government is reporting as unemployed Americans.

The CNBC interview came one day after Clifton had penned a gutsy opinion piece on Gallup’s web site, defiantly calling the government’s 5.6 percent unemployment figure “The Big Lie” in the article’s headline. His appearance on CNBC was apparently to walk back the “lie” part of the title and reframe the jobs data as just hopelessly deceptive.

Ben Carson: 'Christian Values' Landed Me on 'Extremist' List

Likely 2016 presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson Monday fired back at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has included him in its "Extremist Files" because of his long-stated opinions against same-sex marriage.

"It is important for us to once again advocate true tolerance," the retired neurosurgeon said in a statement. "That means being respectful of those with whom we disagree and allowing people to live according to their values without harassment."

Further, said Carson, the nation is approaching the stage where "wrong is called right" at a time "when embracing traditional Christian values is equated to hatred" and "it is nothing but projectionist when some groups label those who disagree with them as haters."

By naming Carson to its list, the SPLC includes him along with former Ku Klux Klan leader and Louisiana politician David Duke and numerous KKK members, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and more.

Federal agencies that regulate nuclear power stations are rushing to address a potential threat from an electromagnetic pulse attack on the U.S. electric grid: nuclear power plant meltdowns.

The good news is that the issue and proposed fix are easy. The bad news is that there is growing concern that an EMP attack, either from a North Korean nuclear bomb or a solar storm, will occur first.

Senate Democrats delay confirming Hogan cabinet picks

BALTIMORE —Maryland state Democratic lawmakers unhappy with the Republican governor's State of the State address delayed confirming five of Gov. Larry Hogan's cabinet picks for a week.

In his first State of the State address, Hogan blamed Maryland's anemic economy on the policies of the former governor and the same General Assembly crowd that could help him push his legislative agenda through.

"High taxes, over-regulation and an anti-business attitude are clearly the cause of our economic problems. Our economy is floundering, and too many Marylanders have been struggling, just to get by," Hogan said Wednesday.

Merck Tried to Pay Off Its Own Vaccine Scientists To Remain Silent

As the corporate media desperately attempts to dupe as many people as possible into getting MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccines for the protection of "the children," uncovered court documents revealing major vaccine fraud at Merck & Co., the multinational drug company that produces MMR vaccines for the U.S. market, are only getting the attention they deserve from the alternative media.

Back in 2010, two former Merck scientists, repulsed by what they saw taking place at the highest levels of the company, filed a False Claims Act in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The filing accuses Merck of lying about the safety and effectiveness of MMR vaccines, tampering with study data, defrauding the U.S. government and various other high-level crimes.

Claims by Merck that the mumps component of the MMR vaccine is "95 percent effective" are also questioned in the filing. Stephen Krahling and Joan Wlochowski say Merck senior management falsified data specifically on the effectiveness of the mumps vaccine, intentionally spiking blood samples with animal antibodies in order to trick the public into thinking that the vaccine is effective.

"Merck... added animal antibodies to blood samples to achieve more favorable test results, though it knew that the human immune system would never produce such antibodies, and that the antibodies created a laboratory testing scenario that 'did not in any way correspond to, correlate with, or represent real life... virus neutralization in vaccinated people,'" explains CourthouseNews.com.

Clinton Ally Resigns in Mark of Infighting

Hillary Clinton ally David Brock on Monday resigned from the board of a pro-Clinton super-PAC, according to a letter obtained by Politico, accusing it of leaking information about other pro-Clinton groups.

The move is a sign of fighting among the network of pro-Clinton groups, the kind of strife that plagued the Clinton campaign in 2008 but that allies were trying to avoid this time around.

Brock is resigning from the board of Priorities USA Action, and his letter claims that officials there leaked information to The New York Times about the fundraising practices of two pro-Clinton groups founded by Brock: Media Matters and American Bridge.

The Times article in question revealed that American Bridge, Media Matters and another pro-Clinton group, Ready for Hillary, have paid a consultant, Mary Pat Bonner, a 12.5 percent commission on money she brings in.

Brock's letter calls this article "an orchestrated political hit job," and he accuses Priorities officials of being behind what he views as an attack on his groups.

Brock alleges that “current and former Priorities officials were behind this specious and malicious attack on the integrity of these critical organizations.”

Martin O'Malley's Mom, at 87, Keeps Senators in Line

While attention swirls around whether former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley will run for president, another member of his family — his 87-year-old mother — has been building an extraordinary political career of her own on Capitol Hill.

In 1987, Barbara O'Malley joined the staff of then-freshman Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland as a receptionist. Today she is answering Mikulski's telephones and "keeping the Senate's other inhabitants in line," The Wall Street Journal reports.

She doesn't take guff from anyone, according to Washington power players who've been on the receiving end of her get-back-to-work instructions.

"She's so funny — and she's tough," said retired Sen. Jay Rockefeller, who visited Mrs. O'Malley (known throughout Senate offices as "Mrs. O") every day when he was in Washington.

"When she thinks the conversation has gone on too long, she goes, 'Go to your office and do some work,'" said the West Virginia Democrat, who served 30 years in the Senate.

She has been described as the best-known 80-something on Capitol Hill to have never won an election.

"I will sometimes run into U.S. senators who I've never met before, but they already know who my mom is," said her son, who just ended his tenure as governor and has made numerous trips to Iowa as he mulls a possible presidential bid.

Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Press Release 2-10-15

On February 7, 2015 at approximately 1935 hours a Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Deputy observed a silver passenger vehicle traveling 68 mph in the posted 55 mph speed limit on Rt. 50 in the area of Caleb lane. The vehicle was stopped and the operator was identified as Rip Thomas Scotton 33, from Willards Maryland and a front seat passenger was identified as Holly Star Lynch 37, from Snow Hill Maryland.

Through the course of the traffic stop a K9 scan was conducted of the vehicle, and the K9 positively alerted to the odor of a presence of suspected controlled dangerous substances.
Ms. Lynch admitted to the Deputy that she had needles in her purse. The Deputy located 3 capped hypodermic syringes in Ms. Lynch’s purse. Ms. Lynch stated that she uses Heroin with the needles.

Ms. Lynch was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and later released on a Criminal Citation. Mr. Scotton received a written warning for the speed.

ISIS Threat Level in Homeland High: FBI has opened ISIS cases in 49 U.S. states

President Obama may have trouble calling ISIS Islamic, but the FBI is sure taking ISIS’s reach into America seriously.
According to World Net Daily as ISIS spreads its influence and rule not only in its caliphate of portions of Syria and Iraq but also in non-contiguous areas of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, the FBI is opening up cases of suspects who may be tied to ISIS in 49 states of the United States.

“We are focused keenly on who would be looking to travel to join this band of murderers who will have come back from Iraq and Syria and to the United States,” said FBI Director James Comey in a recent speech to law enforcement officers in Mississippi.

“We have opened cases all over the place focused on this threat, so it is not … a Washington thing – it is something we focus on throughout the FBI,” Comey said.

The FBI director’s latest comment on the ISIS threat to the U.S. has evoked sharp criticism from Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Graham criticized the Obama administration’s limited air strikes against ISIS positions in Iraq and Syria in the face of the Sunni jihadist group’s “existential threat” to the U.S.

Traffic Crash near Milford Results in Heroin Seizure

Milford – The Delaware State Police have arrested a Wilmington man for possessing a large amount of heroin after he crashed his car while attempting to flee from troopers.

The incident occurred Monday February 9, 2015 around 9:50 p.m. as a trooper on patrol in the area of Bay Road (US113/SR1) and Barratts Chapel Road north of Frederica observed a white sedan traveling southbound on SR1 above the posted speed limit. The trooper was able to catch up to the vehicle and activate the patrol vehicle’s emergency equipment in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. Upon doing so, the vehicle continued southbound and increased its speed in an attempt to elude the trooper. Once the vehicle reached speeds in excess of 100 mph, the trooper discontinued the pursuit at the intersection of Bay Road and Thompsonville Road, but continued to travel southbound at a safe distance behind the fleeing car in order to determine if the vehicle was going to enter Milford city limits.

As the trooper approached the area of I.G. Burton car dealership, the suspect car was located and had been involved in a collision with two telephone poles. The operator, who was later identified as Ronald E. Brown, 25 of Wilmington, was laying outside the car with apparent injuries sustained in the crash. He was transported to Milford Memorial Hospital by EMS and treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries. A search of the 2012 Ford Fusion resulted in locating a black bag on the front passenger’s side floor containing 2,340 bags of heroin weighing 35.115 grams along with over $2,000.00 in suspected drug proceeds.

Ronald Brown was eventually transported back to Troop 3 where he was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance in a Tier 5 Quantity (Heroin), Possession with Intent to Deliver Heroin, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Disregard a Police Officer Signal, Driving While Suspended or Revoked, Reckless Driving, Speeding, and other traffic related offences. What Would Really Happen If The Homeland Security Department Was Shut Down? It Turns Out Conservatives Are Right About It, Little Would Change

It will fall on deaf ears, but I would remind the fascist Democrats (and some RINOs) that prior to 2001, we didn’t have a Department of Homeland Security and we functioned better than we do now in my opinion. DHS is a massive bureaucratic nightmare that does little for our actual security, but lines the pockets of corrupt politicos and agencies very nicely. No wonder those such as Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland are screaming like Chicken Little that the sky is falling… shutting down DHS will hurt her bottom line in a myriad of ways and we just can’t have that, now can we? This is the worst kind of extortion: Either fund illegal and unconstitutional Amnesty, or the US will get hit with a major terrorist attack (they hope). Just who are the terrorists here, anyway?

Washington Post Questions Brian Williams’ Katrina “Criminal Gangs” Story

There’s a story Brian Williams likes to tell. He has told it in a TV interview. He has told it to at least two book authors. But even though it had all the makings of a great yarn — danger, guns, resolve — Williams never reported it to his viewers.

It’s the one about the gangs that Williams claimed had “overrun” a posh Ritz-Carlton where he stayed during Hurricane Katrina.

Williams is an, as WP writer Terrence McCoy terms it, hibernation mode following the revelations regarding his adventures in a military helicopter that was shot down in Iraq, how he “stared down the barrel of an RPG”, which all turned out to be untrue. Stories he told again and again and again.

…few stories illustrated that predilection to talk more than his takes on Katrina — the stories with which he made his bones. But now some of them are taking heat.

Among them: The one he told about witnessing a suicide at the Superdome. Or the one he told about watching a body float past the Ritz-Carlton, perched at the edge of an otherwise dry French Quarter. Or the one about the dysentery he said he got. And, finally, the story he told about the Ritz-Carlton gangs. Three separate sources told reporters no gangs infiltrated the Ritz-Carlton.

Can Old Bay give new life to the McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish sandwich?

We're about to find out.

On. Feb. 16, 700 McDonald's locations in the region will unveil a new, limited-time-only menu item: a Filet-O-Fish with the beloved Maryland seafood seasoning. According to a McDonalds press release, local owner/operator Mark Furr came up with the idea, so we can all blame him if this ruins Old Bay forever.

It might not. The Filet-O-Fish isn't the chain's most popular menu item, but the fried fish sandwich with cheese and tartar sauce has a bit of a cult following. In 2010, former Saveur editor James Oseland admitted he was a fan: "I’m sorry, I know it is the height of foodie irresponsibility even to admit to setting foot inside the Evil Death Star that is McDonald’s, but the mega-chain’s Filet-O-Fish sandwiches are perfection on a bun . . . From the crisp wedge of battered, fried fish to the dainty dab of tartar sauce, they are a miracle of food science." The sandwich also gets some rock-n-roll cred for being banned in Russia.

D.C. City Council Holds Hearing To Discuss Legalizing Recreational Marijuana Sales

While voters in Washington D.C. managed to decriminalize possession of marijuana with a ballot initiative last fall, the city is considering taking it a step further and making it legal to sell the stuff as well. The City Council is holding a hearing today to mull whether it should join Colorado and Washington State to allow the sale of pot for recreational use by adults.

Obama Prepares For Keystone XL Veto

President Obama is just days away from issuing the biggest veto of his tenure, with Republicans poised to send him legislation that would authorize construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.

Obama’s veto — just the third of his presidency and the first since 2010 — is expected to come with little fanfare, with even opponents of the pipeline arguing the White House should avoid further angering Democrats and unions who want Keystone to be built.

"We just want to see it get it rejected. Our work doesn't end with the veto, we need to make sure votes are there to sustain that veto," said Melinda Pierce, Sierra Club's legislative director.

The General Assembly may need to find less direct ways to protect the Chesapeake than farming regulations
Posted: Sunday, February 8, 2015 10:30 pm | Updated: 11:11 pm, Sun Feb 8, 2015.

· by Diamondback Editorial Board

Last fall, this editorial board criticized the General Assembly for not doing enough to address the pollution-ridden Chesapeake Bay. With a new administration in the Government House and a handful of environmental regulations lifted, it looks as though there’s still room for criticism.

As The Baltimore Sun reported, Gov. Larry Hogan has prevented environmental regulations — such as limiting smog-forming air pollution from power plants and restricting the amount of phosphorus-rich fertilizer used by farmers — from going into effect. As one of his first moves in office, Hogan “ordered a comprehensive review of all pending regulations, opening them up for further ‘public input, public hearing and full due process’ before they can be finalized,” according to The Sun.

Though Hogan will propose a repeal of the controversial rain tax, which taxes surfaces that could create water contamination or drainage problems, many local environmentalists are most concerned with his decision to halt the phosphorus regulation. According to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, agricultural runoff is responsible for 50 percent of the phosphorus entering the bay each year.

Claiming the regulation would hurt the poultry industry and other farmers who use phosphorus-rich fertilizer as an economically efficient resource, Hogan met criticism from environmental activist groups such as the Clean Agriculture Coalition.

It’s understandable that environmentalists would be concerned with the lifting of these regulations; however, Hogan is rightly following his campaign promise to ease any financial or bureaucratic burdens imposed on the state. To completely ignore the farming industry, which largely resides in the Eastern Shore, would cause conflict with many of the supporters who endorsed Hogan on the grounds of fiscal constraint and financial responsibility.

Jordan: Approximately 7,000 IS Members Killed in Strikes

Approximately 7,000 Islamic State group fighters have been killed since Jordan began participating in coalition airstrikes, the country’s air force chief claimed on Sunday.

The Hashemite Kingdom has launched airstrikes against Islamic State group weapons depots, training centers and military barracks since militants released a video of them burning a Jordanian pilot to death.

Jordanian officials have said they would retaliate harshly for the slaying of the pilot, Lt. Muaz Kasasbeh, who was set ablaze while trapped in a cage.

Since Thursday, the Jordanian air force has attacked and destroyed 56 Islamic State targets, the air force chief, General Mansour al-Jabour, told reporters. This includes 19 targets on the first day, 18 on the second and 19 on the third, he said.

“We achieved what we were looking for: revenge for Muaz,” the general said. “And this is not the end. This is the beginning.”

In recent days, Jordanian officials have delivered tough warnings to Islamic State, saying the retaliation campaign would not stop until the group has been destroyed.

Top Gun: Navy's Newest Weapon Heads to Testing

Groups of Navy brass and the inventors who support them lined up in the cavernous Walter E. Washington Convention Center last week to take a photo with their 33-foot-long star: The electromagnetic railgun.

The Navy has worked on the railgun since 2005, and Wednesday marked its public debut in Washington. The Navy considers development of railgun technology one of its top modernization goals.

When it is fired, a massive electric pulse shoots into the railgun’s barrel, jumpstarting rings of magnetic fields that force a projectile out at speeds over 4,500 miles per hour – six times the speed of sound — and over a distance of more than 100 miles, according to the Navy.

BAE Systems won a $21 million contract in 2009 to develop its prototype. In 2013, it was awarded an additional $35 million contract to build its follow-on, which would fire more shots at once than its predecessor. The Navy expects to have the railgun fully operational in the mid-2020s.

The "bullets" themselves, projectiles that are also under development, are expected to cost about $25,000 each.

Ex-FCC Commissioner: Internet Users Will Pay More

A federal agency's plan to classify the Internet as a public utility, and regulate service providers as if they were gas and electricity companies, guarantees bigger monthly bills for everyone who pays for online access, economist and former FCC Commissioner Harold Furchtgott-Roth told Newsmax TV on Friday.

"The reality will be higher prices to consumers and years of litigation," Furchtgott-Roth told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner. "That's the inevitable outcome."

The "utility" designation for Internet providers will preserve so-called "net neutrality" by preventing them from selectively speeding up or slowing down customers' Web traffic, or charging different fees for different speeds, U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler announced on Wednesday

The announcement follows President Barack Obama's call in November for "the strongest possible rules to protect net neutrality."

"It's a mess," said Furchtgott-Roth, a former chief economist for the House Commerce Committee. "This is an ill-advised regulatory step by the federal government."

Under the existing system, most people can choose among Internet providers, he said.

"The vast majority of Americans — well over 90 percent of Americans — have access to two or three land-based broadband providers," said Furchtgott-Roth. "So it's a very intensely competitive market. and most of these companies aren't making very much money selling you broadband services."

"The efforts of the FCC in the coming weeks will make sure that the consumers won't get another choice because the broadband providers are going to have no incentive left to invest in new network equipment," he said.

Charter Leader Calls Obama Out for School Choice Hypocrisy

President Obama is disappointing education reformers by failing to support school choice policies.

Education reformer Steve Perry, the CEO and founder of Capitol Preparatory Schools, called Obama out on Monday at a school choice forum hosted by Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C.

“With all due respect to our president, he wasn’t always our president,” Perry said. “He didn’t send his children to public schools at any point, nor did he attend himself. I’m not against him for that. I’m saying I want what he wants for his kids for all kids. I’m saying I respect and support this brother, but I want him to respect and support the other children in the same way that his own children had.”

Perry also criticized many members of the Congressional Black Caucus and the Hispanic Caucus for sending their children to charter and magnet schools but not advocating school choice policies.

“If we don’t call out the hypocrisy of individuals who themselves benefit from choice, but then pull the bridge of choice up behind them, then we’re not going to get to where we need to be,” Perry said to a room full of education reform advocates, charter school students, Catholic school students and others.

Kinchlow: The History of Black America, Part 1

February is Black History Month. Properly defined, history is: The study of past events; the whole series of past events connected with someone or something.

History should be an accurate, truthful presentation of factual events. In other words, we expect historians to tell it like it is. That would include the good, the bad and the ugly, as long as it is what actually transpired. Anything more or less is propaganda: Information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view. An unbiased overview of black history should, therefore, include the accurate, truthful presentation of factual events.

I had always accepted certain truths, as reported by the “unbiased” media, as well as presentation from black leaders as being “the way it is.” However, education can present a danger to the status quo. In my case, it became the impetus for a personal revolution, causing me, from that point on, to question and then ascertain the facts of a matter.

It took years before I became aware that much of what was passed on as black history was biased or misleading. The Bible (not a religious book) says, “Study to show thyself approved, a workman that needs not be ashamed, rightly dividing … truth.” That verse became the impetus for a personal journey into reality.

All my young life, I had been taught that the white man had been the slave master, responsible for enslaving the thousands of blacks who arrived on slave ships. I felt justified in my anger and resentment against “whitey” “honkies,” “crackers” and “peckerwoods.” I became a revolutionary, committed to the “black revolution” – a follower of Malcolm X.

Open Payments

Sometimes, doctors and hospitals have financial relationships with health care manufacturing companies. These relationships can include money for research activities, gifts, speaking fees, meals, or travel. The Social Security Act requires CMS to collect information from applicable manufacturers and group purchasing organizations (GPOs) in order to report information about their financial relationships with physicians and hospitals. Open Payments is the federally run program that collects the information about these financial relationships and makes it available to you. For an overview of the published data, view our factsheet.
