It happened at the Virginia Motorsports Park just before the 12 p.m. wave of the Great Bull Run kicked off.

Panda Cub Healthy; 2nd Cub Stillborn

WASHINGTON - The first post-natal checkup for Washington's new celebrity - the panda cub born at the National Zoo - has had good results. Veterinarians and zoo keepers at the zoo say the cub appears to be healthy.

The cub was taken briefly from its mother, Mei Xiang, to be examined on Sunday.

Dr. Suzanne Murray says the cub, which weighs 137 grams or 4.8 ounces, has been squealing the way it's supposed to.

One Woman Prevents Another Elementary School Shooting

Antoinette Tuff is a school clerk – and also a hero. On Tuesday, she single-handedly prevented a gunman from entering an elementary school and shooting everyone inside. Her heroic efforts at McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, Georgia, was documented in an amazing 24-minute 911 call.

When Anoinette heard gunshots outside of the school, she dialed 911. She stayed on the line when she calmly confronted the shooter. She could tell he was a disturbed and hurting young man, but by talking with him, she was able to get him to open up to her.

A Letter To The Editor: Wicomico County Board Of Education Pre-K

Mr. Albero,

It has come to my attention, that many children from hard working families in the Pittsville, Willards, Powellville, and Parsonsburg area will not or have not been accepted into Pre-K this year at Willards Elementary School. The reason these children will not be accepted into Pre-K this year is because we have a law on the books that states that children (also called automatic's) that are from low income families must and will be accepted into Pre-k first. Now, I understand and accept that children from economically challenged homes are at a disadvantage; however, why have we accepted in our society that it is more important for children to be accepted into Pre-k because they are from a poor family than for a child with other more important problems like disabilities or health problems or IEP'S etc.

People, or at least the people with whom I associate, are tired of being discriminated against for being successful, married, paying taxes and having good morals and values. I have also been informed that the Board Of Education has not been provided with enough funding for an additional teacher/classroom for the Pre-k grade at Willards School even though they have the space. It has been explained that since there is no funding to accommodate the children who did not get accepted and the fact that Pre-K is not required, those children are at a loss or disadvantage.

I am asking for our representatives (County Council, County Executive, Board Of Ed,) to stand for what's right! Don't allow children to be discriminated against because they aren't poor. Find the ''MONEY" and accommodate these children so they can have the same start as any other child in our community.

I am aware that many in this area are questioning where their impact fee money ($5000.00 plus) went for building new homes in the area. My understanding was that this money went straight to the Board of Ed. Many are questioning where their taxes are going. I have never been one to complain; however, when it affects our children, someone has to fight the good fight. I hope that this just doesn't fall to the side. I hope and pray that many pull together as one and force this issue to be fixed so no parent in the future has to worry about their child being at a disadvantage when he or she starts kindergarten.

It's still early. Some children may get in and some may not. Those parents whose children do get accepted, please do not forget the frustration and anger you felt before you found out your child was accepted. Let's pull together and stay together as we have done in years past and support each other until the end. The Eastside has always been a strong community. Let's fight the good fight together. There is a great saying, "United we stand, but divided we fall."

Wicomico County Board Of Education GONE WILD!!!

Yesterday's article about not allowing certain children into the Pre-K Program into Schools is just the tip of the iceberg.

Were you aware that Wicomico County donated $600,000.00 of your taxes ABOVE AND BEYOND  the maintenance of effort this year?

Do you know what the Wicomico County Board of Education did with those funds ALREADY?

They have gone into the School Bus business. They purchased five brand new buses and I'm sure you'll agree with me, this is just the beginning of the end for independent bus owners/drivers. 

Now the Board claims they bought them to take on some of the routes the current contractors claim they can't make any money on. Yet we've seen them cut back on these contractors for years now and get this, the BOE has opened a new position and they have hired a new Manager to handle these bus routes. 

Why can't they rearrange each route to make it affordable for the independent contractors to make a few bucks, because they want to ultimately eliminate them.

On another story, are you familiar with the food program where underprivileged children get free or reduced meals in the County. Well get this. This year they have added what they call the "2nd Language Student Program". If english is your second language, you get free or reduced meals no matter your income.

So let's say Dr. Onfelie Bonebelly has a child attending school in Wicomico County and he makes a million dollars a year. His child immediately falls into the 2nd Language Program and gets free or reduced meals. Talk about LIBERALS completely screwing with YOUR tax dollars!

As if it isn't bad enough that WE tax abiding citizens are discriminated against in which our children are not allowed to attend Pre-K because those NON TAX paying citizens on welfare, food stamps and affordable housing, (as if we don't provide enough already) are getting more advantages than those of us who DO pay. 

Ladies & Gentlemen, IT IS TIME YOU GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE! It's time you get rid of the leadership in Salisbury and Wicomico County. Enough is Enough!

The Delmar Dragway

This week marks the 50th anniversary of the Delmar Dragway and I’m sure many people around here have some interesting tales to tell. Prior to the Cathells opening the quarter mile strip just north of Delmar, the only drag strip on the Shore was the one in Georgetown. The one in Georgetown was only an eighth of a mile and had a wicked drop-off just past the finish line. Anyone daring to go down that strip was taking their life in their hands.

Back in 1963, drag racing was a very big thing. Some of the local boys spent many an hour getting their car ready for the Sunday races. Of course, it was much simpler with the cars then.

Some of the really fast cars running against each other had all the anticipation of a championship match. Some would run every week and the owner made whatever adjustments needed to be made to get the most out of his car. Some of the more simple adjustments could be made on race day. Taking the breather off the carburetor was common practice. I don’t know whether this made the car go any faster, but it sounded faster.

Along with the boys that had their cars to do with as they pleased, there were always a few that drove their father’s family car. If their fathers only knew what Junior was doing, he would skinned him alive.

Every once in a while, they would bring in big time talent. I remember one time when I was in the National Guard; they brought in TV Tommy Ivo and Don Garlits. Not being able to get out of the mandatory Guard week-end,

I was determined to see this classic race. Ivo had four Buick engines synchronized to carry him down the track. But Garlits was everyone’s favorite and didn’t disappoint. I took my lunch hour and sped up to Delmar and in time to see “the race” and sped back to the armory before the hour was up.

I remember one time Ralph Seaton tore up his clutch in one of the preliminary races. Instead of giving up, he went to his home in Wango, got another clutch and switched them right at the drag strip. Some of those boys were better mechanics at 19 and 20 years old than many of the “parts changers” that pass themselves off as mechanics today. The change to electronics in cars has caused many of the old time mechanics to hang up their wrenches.

Drag racing was like one of the major sports. The names linked to their cars brought them notoriety. Most of the boys that bought their own cars, sacrificed most of the luxuries so that they could have the biggest engine the manufacturer offered. Names like Lee Phillips, P. K. Truitt, Pete Maldve, the Brown boys ( Tom and George), Sonny Cox, Mickey Wigglesworth and Henry Heygood bring back many a sweet memory. Of course all the racing didn’t take place at the track. There was many a drag race held at one of the favorite straight stretches of the county’s back roads.

All competing cars were classified at Delmar and the designation was clearly marked with white shoe polish on the windshield. Sunday night at the Oaks was the chance to show off that you had been to “the track” if you had the big letters on your windshield.

Technology has replaced good old-fashioned knowledge of the engine by the drivers. Nowadays, anybody can have a fast car if they’re willing to pay the price. And the names like “Mother-in-Law” and “Sour Grapes” are only a pleasant memory to a few of us “old guys”.

Customer Pistol-Whips Dunkin’ Donuts Employee Over Iced Coffee Order

Most people when they’re upset with an incorrect order just ask for a refund or lodge a complaint with management.

But one Florida man decided Tuesday to take “customer dissatisfaction” to a whole new level by pistol-whipping a Dunkin’ Donuts employee while his wife shouted, “Shoot him, shoot him!”

Police in Lauderhill, Fla. on Wednesday released video purportedly showing Jeffrey Wright, 27, repeatedly striking Dunkin’ Donuts drive-through employee Rajay Hall, 19, on the head with a pistol.

The reason for the beating? Hall supposedly messed up Wright’s iced vanilla coffee order.

As customers rushed to break up the fight, Wright’s wife, 22-year-old Alexis Longo, allegedly encouraged her husband to shoot Hall:

Officials Tour Berlin Dairy Farm

BERLIN — Maryland Lieutenant Governor and 2014 gubernatorial candidate Anthony G. Brown was stumping on the Eastern Shore last week with visits to Salisbury and Berlin to highlight a pair of agricultural success stories.

Brown first visited Perdue’s corporate offices in Salisbury to celebrate the company’s recent Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. As a result of a four-year, $10.5 million renovation, Perdue’s corporate office facility in Salisbury is the first LEED platinum building on the Eastern Shore and one of just 19 LEED platinum projects in all of Maryland. LEED certification provided independent third-part verification that a building, home or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health.

McDonough To Propose 'Stand Your Ground' Law For Maryland

A Baltimore County lawmaker said Thursday that he plans to introduce legislation in the General Assembly that would bring to Maryland the “stand your ground” legal doctrine that became a central part of the debate over Florida’s Trayvon Martin case.

Critics of the outcome of the Trayvon Martin case contend Florida’s “stand your ground” law may have helped escalate the conflict when George Zimmerman came across Trayvon, an unarmed 17-year-old African American, while Zimmerman was patrolling his neighborhood. In the struggle that followed, Zimmerman shot Trayvon fatally.

Zimmerman, who is Hispanic, was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges after claiming self-defense. While he did not formally raise “stand your ground” as a defense, the central premise of the law was part of the instructions to the jury.

A Letter To The Editor: PRMC LPN Layoffs In Search Of New Designation

PRMC laid off several of their LPNs last week. From what I have been told this is only the beginning of trimming staff without certain certifications or being the coveted RN. 

All of this trimming is in pursuit of PRMC becoming designated as a Magnent hospital. Another banner to hang down the exterior walls of the hospital in an attempt to convince citizens driving by that the care provided inside those walls is competent and friendly.

Perdue Awarded $28K In Fees From Legal Battle

BERLIN — A landmark civil suit inched closer to closure this week when a federal court clerk awarded Perdue over $28,000 in various legal fees expended to defend the case.

In March 2010, the New York-based Waterkeeper Alliance, along with the Assateague Coastal Trust and the Assateague Coastkeeper, filed suit in U.S. District Court against Perdue and Berlin’s Hudson Farm, a contract factory farm operation of about 80,000 birds. The suit was filed after sampling in ditches adjacent to the property allegedly revealed high levels of harmful fecal coliform and E. coli that violated the Clean Water Act.

After three years of legal wrangling, the case finally went to trial last October and concluded after 10 days of testimony during which experts on both sides testified on the merits of the case. In late December, U.S. District Court Judge William Nickerson ruled in favor of Perdue and Alan Hudson, opining the Waterkeeper Alliance was not successful in proving a Clean Water Act violation.
In early January, each of the defendants filed separate motions seeking reimbursement for attorney fees and other costs associated with litigating the three-year case. Perdue sought $2.5 million in attorney fees and other costs from the plaintiff, while the Hudson Farm sought $500,000.

WWII Vet, Beaten By Teens Outside Eagles Lodge, Dies

SPOKANE, Wash. - WWII veteran Delbert Belton survived being wounded in action during the Battle of Okinawa only to be beaten and left for dead by two teens at the Eagles Lodge in Spokane on Wednesday evening.

Belton, 88, succumbed to his injuries Thursday morning at Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Witnesses say Belton was in the parking lot of the Eagles Lodge at 6410 N. Lidgerwood, adjacent to the Eagles Ice-A-Rena, around 8 p.m. Wednesday when the two male suspects attacked him as he was about to head inside to play pool.

Police responded with K-9s to track the suspects' scent but were not able to locate them.

"It does appear random. He was in the parking lot, it appears he was assaulted in the parking lot and there was no indication that he would have known these people prior to the assault," Spokane Police Major Crimes Detective Lieutenant Mark Griffiths said.

Mayor James Ireton, Jr. informs the public that B & Z Investments, owners of Red Light District, have been non-compliant for 12 days. 

On August 12, 2013, City officials asked that B & Z Investments provide them with documentation detailing stock, a floor plan and accounting information so that it may be determined if Red Light District is, or is not, considered an Adult Retail Store.

The owners have provided none of the requested information and have been fined daily since August 12, 2013. Attached is the latest letter to B & Z Investments. Again, the City is requesting the detailed information.

Study Suggests Employee Raises In Salisbury

SALISBURY — A recently completed employee pay study for Salisbury has found that employees are about 14-percent below market averages and that current policy is “no longer competitive with its overall [pay] ranges and structures.”

The agency that conducted the study, Evergreen Solutions, LLC, recommended a three-step, nearly $750,000 approach to bring the city pay structure back to a competitive place in the market.
Looking at 381 employees across 10 departments, Salisbury is lagging slightly behind the market, said Brian Wolfe, manager of Evergreen. “You’ve got 80 percent of your employees who are below their pay grade mid-point which points to some issue, perhaps, with funding of the STEPs.”

Evergreen compared Salisbury to locations across the Eastern Shore, including Ocean City, Snow Hill, Annapolis and Cambridge in Maryland and Seaford, Dover and Georgetown in Delaware among many others. There were 49 positions in the city that were used as benchmarks and were found to be an average of 14-percent below the market range at mid-point.

A Letter To The Editor: County Council Meeting

Mr Albero, 

I feel I need to write you about the Daily Times coverage of Tuesdays Wicomico County Council meeting, being an avid viewer of Pac 14 and having watched this most recent meeting I was appalled that the only story the Times could write on the council meeting was about the oyster program. 

So many more things were on the agenda that to do a 2nd page story on this one item seemed to me that the Daily Times is doing its best to suppress any of the actions of the council, news that needs to reach the people of Wicomico County. 

While Worchester County made the front page about poultry regulations the Wicomico County Council also addressed this matter, also discussed were the speed cameras and Councilman Joe Holloway brought up a $35.000.00 study that was done last year and had never been discussed by the council. 

It is well known that one Pat Peterson now serves on the Times editorial board, Ms Peterson was Rick Pollitts finance guru at one time and was one of the department heads that received a secret raise a few years ago. This poor reporting would lead one to think that maybe Rick Pollitt has the Times in his pocket, after all just a few weeks ago there were two puff stories done on Rick Pollitt in a matter of days. If what I've said is true shame on them if not maybe they need to hire a more ambitious reporter and bring us facts instead of fluff.

A report released on Monday contains an email exchange between two senior officials at British-based contractor Britam Defence where a scheme 'approved by Washington' is outlined explaining that Qatar would fund rebel forces in Syria to use chemical weapons.

Barack Obama made it clear to Syrian president Bashar al-Assad last month that the U.S. would not tolerate Syria using chemical weapons against its own people.

Rising Seas Could Cause $1 Trillion Damage A Year By 2050

A new study carried out by the economists at the World Bank has examined the risks that coastal cities around the world face due to global warming’s effect on extreme weather events, and rising sea levels.

The study determined the cost of flooding in 136 of the world’s largest coastal cities by matching average annual losses against the city’s gross domestic product (GDP), and predicted that by 2050 the cost could reach $1 trillion a year, if governments don’t start to take the “prophecies of doom” more seriously and prepare strategies to minimise the effects of severe weather and build flood defences.

Experts have always warned that coastal cities around the world are prone to the effects of flooding, as glaciers melt and sea levels continue to rise, but governments and authorities generally ignore the doom and gloom warnings that scientists give them.

Delaware Electric Cooperative’s Solar Farm Now In Full Operation

Delaware Electric Cooperative announced generation is moving into the grid from the Bruce A. Henry Solar Energy Farm near Georgetown. A portion of the 20 acre solar complex began producing power in July. The entire facility went online on Aug. 
21. 

Construction on the solar energy farm began in January, as more than 40 Delaware contractors worked to install 16,000 solar panels. The panels were manufactured in Delaware by Motech Americas, based in Glasgow. The project was managed by SunEdison. Delaware Electric is based in Greenwood. 

“Once plans to build the solar farm were finalized, we decided to use products made in Delaware. Aside from the obvious environmental benefits, this project has provided a boost to the state’s economy,” said Bill Andrew, CEO of Delaware Electric Cooperative.

Readying For College Or Career Through 'Common Core'

As students in Maryland public schools go back to the classroom this week and next they will likely notice some changes to the curriculum. That is a result of the Common Core Standards being implemented this year in Maryland.

State school officials say dozens of states across the country are implementing Common Core Standards in reading, language arts and math. It involves critical thinking and problem solving according to the State School Superintendent Lillian Lowery. She says it is about preparing students to graduate and for college and careers.

Dr. Lowery tells WBAL Radio that school officials found that some students were graduating with pretty good grades but were having to take remedial classes in college. She says the Common Core Standards were designed to help change that in the future.

They work very hard and do not like complaining, but Enough is Enough, They would just like what was PROMISED to them so they can live some what good so they don't have to ask for Assistance from the Government. The MD Court of Appeals' Decision to reinstate and fully restore Deputy james "Troy" Durham was handed down over one year ago, AUGUST 1, 2012.

Deputy Durham was brought back to the Somerset County Sheriff's Office on September 17, 2012.
Durham has still not received any of his back pay and/or benefits for the three years he was unlawfully terminated: September 17, 2009 through September 17, 2012.

Durham will be represented by his Attorney, Howard B. Hoffman, Esq.

Welcome To An Eastern Shore McDonald's

Hey I have a good story for you. A tech at our Ocean Pines office, Jimmy, stopped at McDonald's South across from Campus for Breakfast about two weeks ago. He got his food on the way to work in Ocean Pines. His order was incorrect. So, that afternoon he called that location, and with no answer he took the sandwich back to McDonald's and asked for a refund. The manager refused to give a refund and Jimmy stated "only at McDonald's" and turned to walk out. The manager threw the sandwich at him and hit him in the back. Jimmy then walked out while the other employees laughed. Jimmy did not want to make a big deal about it and never said anything else about it until today at work.

'Butler' Movie Wrong To Portray Reagan As Racist

Former Attorney General Edwin Meese III says the portrayal of former President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy as racially insensitive in the new movie "Lee Daniels' The Butler" is not accurate.

Meese has joined with other supporters of Reagan who have been angered with the film's claim that Reagan was indifferent to South Africa's apartheid and the producer's decision to have liberal Jane Fonda offer an unflattering portrayal of Nancy Reagan.

"Ronald Reagan did not have a racially discriminatory bone in his body from his very youngest days," Meese told Newsmax. "He was opposed to any type of discrimination or mistreatment of anyone on the basis of race, or quite frankly any other innate characteristic."

Bradley Manning: ‘I Am A Female’

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning wants to live as a woman, his lawyer announced Thursday morning.

Manning, who was sentenced on Wednesday to 35 years in prison, asks to be called Chelsea Manning in a statement Manning’s lawyer read Thursday morning on the “Today” show on NBC.

In it, Manning expresses a desire to begin hormone therapy “as soon as possible.”

A Story Worth Telling

More than a decade ago I had been living in West Ocean City, (Captain's Hill) and I had read about an auction that included two homes for sale on Herring Creek. One was directly on the main body of water and the other was on a canal.

The main home had been owned by a couple who had no heirs. They also owned the second home on the canal in which their caretakers lived in. The caretakers were incredible people who I had met at the auction. 

The first, (main) home had sold for an incredible figure, $423,000.00. The new owners knocked it down and built a McMansion you can see from Rt. 50. Back then, this was an unbelievable price for such a home so the majority of people interested in the second home on the canal simply left the auction because they didn't want to wait another 2 hours before the next home went up for auction and they were afraid it too would sell for crazy money as well.

During that two hour time gap I got to know the two people, (caretakers) and felt I simply needed to buy that home. I offered the highest bid and purchased the home. A living trust was created for the two African American caretakers in which they were to live there the rest of their lives.

It had been 12 years since I made any attempt to contact them, every few years driving by to see if the property was being taken care of. For those people who know who I'm talking about, the yard was always perfectly landscaped and the home well taken are of. 

Last Friday I just had an instinct and we drove to Ocean City. When we got to the home the grass was overgrown and I knew something wasn't right. After checking with neighbors we learned the two had unfortunately passed away. 

Making that purchase was one of the best things I can recall ever doing. During my campaign Mayor Ireton had tried to point me out as a racist. He had NO CLUE who I am and what I'm truly about.

Republican Lawmakers: LePage Said Obama 'Hates White People'

Gov. Paul LePage told a group of Republicans last week that President Obama "hates white people," according to two state lawmakers who say they heard the remark directly.

The governor made the comment during a Maine Republican Party fundraiser on Aug. 12 at the home of John and Linda Fortier in Belgrade. According to the invitation, the fundraiser was a "meet and greet" for LePage and first lady Ann LePage, and an opportunity to meet Rick Bennett, the new party chairman.

The lawmakers, both Republicans, confirmed the comment when asked by a Portland Press Herald reporter but asked that their names be withheld for fear of political retribution.

Each said LePage talked about how Obama could have been the best president ever if he had highlighted his biracial heritage. LePage said the president hasn't done that because he hates white people.

"Yeah, he said it," said one of the lawmakers. "It was one little thing from a speech, but I think most people there thought it was totally inappropriate."

Traffic Advisory Issued for SU Move-In Day Aug. 22

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University Police, in partnership with Wicomico County Public Works, the Maryland State Highway Administration, the City of Salisbury, Salisbury Police and the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, have issued a traffic advisory on Camden Avenue between College Avenue and Pine Bluff Road from 6 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, August 22, as over 1,000 new students and their parents come to campus for Move-In Day. 

Access into the University’s Camden Parking Lot F (Blackwell lot), Camden Parking Lot E (Devilbiss lot), Route 13 Lot A and Dogwood Parking Lot D, as well as the Wayne Street parking garage, will be restricted to move-in traffic and deliveries only. All others should seek parking in the Dresser parking lots.
At the Camden and College avenues intersection, all southbound traffic will be detoured to Route 13. Those wishing to enter the Devilbiss and Blackwell parking lots on campus should turn from Route 13 onto Dogwood Drive. Traffic will be directed northbound to those lots from the Dogwood Drive and Camden Avenue intersection.

Non-University northbound traffic on Camden Avenue from the Fruitland/Eden areas that morning also will be detoured onto Route 13 at the Dogwood Drive and Camden Avenue intersection. To save time, northbound traffic may want to detour onto Route 13 one intersection sooner, at Pine Bluff Road, or use Riverside Drive until the detour ends at 2 p.m. Traffic should be flowing normally by early afternoon.

Narrative: On behalf of the men and women of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Michael A. Lewis regretfully announces the passing of a long time canine that was assigned to our explosive detection team. On 20 August, Retired K9 Gary passed away after a brief illness.

K9 Gary had worked with both DFC Welch and most recently Cpl Heath since 2006 on a vigilant mission to keep our buildings and citizens safe. Not only did K9 Gary provide loyal and dedicated service to Wicomico County, but he was routinely called upon to assist neighboring jurisdictions throughout the region.

K9 Gary regularly trained not only here in Wicomico County but he also trained alongside other K9 teams from Dover Air Force Base that had been involved in seeking out IED type explosives in both Iraq and Afghanistan, all in an effort to constantly improve his working ability.

K9 Gary was also a popular ambassador to our community as he often demonstrated his unique ability to seek out and find explosives at county fairs and for any groups that visited the station to learn about the Sheriff’s Office.

K9 Gary retired in December 2011. We thank K9 Gary for all of his years of active duty service to the Sheriff’s Office and he will be sorely missed.

Meet Sunny: The Obamas' New Puppy

Sunny was born in Michigan in June 2012, and arrived at the White House today. Just like Bo, she’s a Portuguese Water Dog, which works great for the Obamas because of allergies in their family.

Sunny is the perfect little sister for Bo – full of energy and very affectionate – and the First Family picked her name because it fit her cheerful personality.

In the past, Bo has been eager to help the First Family with their official duties, from visiting Walter Reed and the Children’s National Medical Center, to inspecting the Holiday decorations at the White House, to greeting guests at the White House on tours and during the Easter Egg Roll, but in October, the First Lady told reporters that she hosted a “doggie play date” because “Bo doesn't have enough dog interaction.” So now, in addition to helping with those official duties, Bo takes on the important role of big brother!

Spanish Navy Tall Ship Arrives In Ocean City Today

The 170-foot long, six-deck Nao Victoria Galeon, a replica of the 16th Century Spanish Navy tall ship, is expected to enter Ocean City waters tomorrow around 3 p.m. Organizers are reporting it will enter the Inlet shortly after 3 p.m., pass through the Inlet and and could catch the 3:25 p.m. Route 50 drawbridge opening. If not, it will pass through the drawbridge at 3:55 and dock on 3rd Street. Tours will be offered starting Wednesday at 9 a.m. Here's a little bit of information about how the ship came about coming to Ocean City.  Click HERE

Tall Ship Arrival Delayed Til Wednesday Morning
Due to abnormally low water levels in the Inlet and back bays, blamed at least in part on low tides associated with the full moon, the arrival of the 170-foot long, six-deck Nao Victoria Galeon, a replica of the 16th Century Spanish Navy tall ship, has been cancelled for today in Ocean City. It's now expected to enter Ocean City waters around 9:30 tomorrow morning. 

MD Among States With Highest Cases Of Lyme Disease

Health officials say a new study reveals Lyme disease is about 10 times more common than previously reported, and Maryland is one of the leading states with the highest cases of the disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday that as many as 300,000 Americans are actually diagnosed with Lyme disease each year.

Usually, only 20,000 to 30,000 illnesses are reported each year. For many years, CDC officials have known that many doctors don't report every case and that the true count was probably much higher.

Al Jazeera America is spearheading a letter-writing campaign to get people to request the new network be added to their channel lineup.

Al Jazeera America begins broadcasting Tuesday but will only be available in about 50 million homes. A link on the network’s website allows users to search whether the channel is available in their neighborhood, and provides a form letter for potential customers to request it from their TV providers.

“I am writing to request that you add Al Jazeera America as part of your channel lineup. I want to watch Al Jazeera America for its objective, balanced, in-depth news reporting on stories that matter,” the letter states. “Please let me know when I can expect to see Al Jazeera America as a channel option.”

BILL GIVES ILLEGALS STUDENT-LOAN 'EQUALITY'

Illegal alien students who protested last week for “equality” regarding tuition fees may get some of what they are demanding if the Senate passes it’s immigration reform bill.

The legislation grants them the ability to secure some of the same financial benefits granted to U.S. citizens.

Last week, ABC News affiliate WTVD in Raleigh, N.C., reported dozens of illegal aliens at Wake Technical Community College were protesting for changes to a policy that requires them to pay out-of-state tuition even if they live in the state.

NTSB Issues Preliminary Report On Bay Bridge Crash

A preliminary federal report on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge crash that sent a car into the water says the driver of a tractor-trailer involved was on his first trip in the U.S. without a more experienced operator. 

The National Transportation Safety Board released the report Monday on the July 19 accident near Annapolis. The crash sent a car driven by 22-year-old Morgan Lake of Sunderland over the railing and into the water 27 feet below. Lake was able to get out of the car and was rescued.

The report said a tractor-trailer hit Lake's car and another vehicle, pushing Lake's car over the barrier wall. The NTSB says the driver was employed by a Canadian carrier and was on his first solo trip in the United States.

Smart Meter - JUST SAY NO!

As you know, I have introduced the Smart Meters No Cost Opt-out bill the past two sessions. This year, the bill was referred to summer study in the Economic Matters Committee, where it may be examined further, studied, and used as a framework for codifying into law what the opt-out provision would look like.

I will continue to fight for a no cost opt-out. If a customer does not want to have a Smart Meter installed, there should be no cost to him for refusal of installation. At this time, there are no fees set for an opt-out. The Smart Meter, a replacement for your analog meter, transmits usage information through Wi-Fi to the utility company. The lack of privacy that the Smart Meter allows is an invasion of our right to privacy. The only one to benefit from the installation of a Smart Meter is the utility company, not the customer.

Smart Meters have also been linked to health issues and to home fires in other states. This is a safety issue which all consumers should be made aware of, and one in which they should have the choice to opt-out of having one installed.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) met last week to consider the Smart Meter Opt-out option. The result of the meeting was that the PSC tasked its staff to study the information that has been submitted thus far, and to make a recommendation to the PSC as to what course of action it should take. The recommendation may come as early as Labor Day.

I would like to point out the fact that the volunteers at station 2 have responded to every call they were dispatched today in such a commendable timely manner. This all done while the paid fireman are sitting at station 16 watching TV all day. Great job Station 2 volunteers. Proof that the calls can be handled without a paid 24 hour crew.
