TX Firefighter Fired for Fast Food Run
Food run costs Austin firefighter his job
Published: May 28, 2008 at 10:42 AM
AUSTIN, Texas, May 28 (UPI) -- The Austin, Texas, fire chief says he was shocked that one of his firefighters decided to grab a burger before heading out to an emergency call.Firefighter Michael Pooler was fired for a January incident in which he ran over to a fast-food stand next to his fire station before answering a call for help from a woman suffering respiratory distress."Immediate response to 911 calls is the very essence of what it means to be an Austin firefighter. ... Because of his selfish and highly unprofessional actions, he has no right to remain an Austin firefighter," Chief Jim Evans said in a memo released Tuesday. The Austin American-Statesman said the response to the call was delayed by about two minutes and the call was actually canceled after paramedics arrived ahead of Pooler's fire truck. The newspaper said three other members of the truck crew did not leave without Pooler due to rules requiring four firefighters on each run.A spokesman for the 12-year firefighter said an appeal to his dismissal would be pursued.

Alcohol Study
A recent study found that the average American walks about 900 miles in a year.
Another study found Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year.
That means, on average, Americans get about 41 m iles to the gallon.
Kind of makes you proud to be American.

Council Vice President Gary Comegys Flat Out Lied Last Night
If you didn't get the chance to watch PAC 14 last night, at the very end I got up there and asked the Council Vice President, Gary Comegys, if he in fact parked in a Handicap Zone over this past weekend? He replied, "NO."
Ladies & Gentlemen, this is a flat out lie. I tried asking my question a couple of different ways to make sure he clearly understood me and he completely denied his doing so.
That being said, AFTER the meeting ended I flat out walked up to the Council Table and said, you know Gary, I have at least two Police Officers that would testify that you had in fact parked in a Handicap Zone and they had to come find you to make you move your vehicle. He said, "I was only there 10 minutes." He then said that once an Officer asked him to move, he relocated his vehicle.
Well, at that point even Louise Smith looked over, (she was sitting right there) and had that "I can't believe you just lied" look on her face. Gary went on to explain how Michael Day had called him for some help and he drove up there to the Flea Market and "I was only there 10 minutes" came out again. The Officers learned it was Councilman Comegys vehicle and they searched him out because they were absolutely going to tow the vehicles parked in that Handicap Zone. The Officers also allegedly told him they were going to tow his vehicle if he didn't move it.
After the meeting we had all gone downstairs the the parking lot at the GOB. I was talking to Louise about it and she admitted she was very disappointed in what she had just sen and heard.
Ladies & Gentlemen, The Vice President of the City Council LIED to everyone there and everyone watching PAC 14. He admitted it after the meeting was over but never said he was sorry and in fact still tried to deny it in his own way.
After I asked him the question and he LIED, he sat back in his chair and mumbled, I was on the curb. OK Gary, no matter what was asked, you know as well as I, (and now the rest of the world) that you were in fact parked, "at the curb" in a Handicap Zone. I even mentioned it being a loading and unloading area, the Police had to SEARCH YOU OUT at the Flea Market and CONFRONT YOU to get you to move your vehicle.
In fact, there was a Handicap Person on a Bus trying to unload off the Bus AT THE CURB where there is a Handicap Zone. For a Council Vice President to sit there and flat out lie, (knowing where I was going with my question) will simple show the people that YOU are NOT at all trustworthy and that you will in fact lie or twist things to get out of looking bad or whatever reason you chose to not tell the truth.
Remember this when this guy goes to run for Mayor. Mr. Comegys needs to hold a Press Conference and admit that he lied to the Public and come clean. I will simply end with this. Several Police Officers watched PAC 14 last night and have already expressed their disbelief in what they saw.
I wouldn't trust this man as far as I could throw him.
I did not have an inappropriate relationship with Monica Lewinsky. Remember that Folks? That's when Clinton too got on public TV and made that statement. Maybe that's what makes it OK for Comegys?
NASA Employee Suspended for Blogging on the Job
Today it was reported on FCW (Federal Computer Week) that a NASA employee was suspended for 180-days for a violation of the HATCH Act. The report stated this employee was "soliciting campaign contributions and writing politically partisian blog posts" while at work. Click here to read the whole story.
We know that working at NASA has many perks and geeking out on the computer is one of them. It's a fact that many people read blogs while at work but this is the first case I have heard of where someone was penalized for writing on a blog at work as a violation of electioneering laws. Only the federal government would give someone a six-month suspension then hold the door open for them to come back to work.

Earth to Comegys and Shields - Evidently People Do Care
I'm not usually one to talk of reader stats. I tend to leave that to my friend Joe Albero. However, after last night's live blog of the Salisbury City Council AND recent comments by the likes of Tilghman sycophants Gary Comegys and Shanie Shields to the effect that people don't care about what the Tilghman RUBBER STAMP (plus Councilwomen Debbie Campbell and Terry Cohen) are doing, I decided to do a little research.
Yes Gary, it's true that council meetings are sparsely attended and relatively few people get up to speak. It's also true that there is no accurate method to determine how many people are at home watching on PAC-14. But I do know how many people bothered to tune in to our live blogs:
May 12, 2008 -
253 Unique Viewers
265 Read Replay
live telecast on PAC-14
May 21, 2008 -
91 Unique Viewers
288 Read Replay
no live telecast of Budget Public Hearing
May 27, 2008 -
229 Unique Viewers
93 Read Replay (within less than 12 hours of end of meeting)
live telecast on PAC-14
These Live Blog Events (concurrently published on Salisbury News and Delmarva Dealings) were not publicized ahead of time (maybe a few hours in the case of the Public Hearing, which had the lowest number of unique viewers). It also appears that there is a strong correlation between having a live telecast and having a larger number of viewers of the Live Blog.
It appears that Comegys and Shields are wrong. Evidently a fair number of people do care. They just don't want to show up at a meeting to be berated by the likes of you or Louise.
I also want to thank our good friends up north at CoverItLive. These are the folks who provide us with the technology to put on Live Blogs.

HELP WANTED
Salisbury News is looking to hire a Translator. Preferably someone who used to work with the Tilghman Administration so as they can translate all the bullsh!t the Mayor keeps spewing but no one on earth seems to understand. A legal background is obviously a major plus. Accounting experience and Assistant City Administrator translations are much needed as well. No FOB's need apply.
How To Become A Fire Chief For $1,900.00
No Daily Times AGAIN!
Not to worry Folks, you're NOT missing much. However, when we went to go to the mailbox this morning there was nothing there, once again. The failing paper continues to screw up and disappoint their paying Customers. You know what they are, the people that keep you afloat? Considering their Reporter walked out of last nights meeting well before anything important happened, (that's the way the Mayor prefers it anyway) you won't read the juicy stuff in the Times anyway.
Salisbury City Attorney - A Basket Full of Red Herrings
During last night's Salisbury Council meeting, the fight over whether to appropriate an additional $28,000 for City Attorney Paul Wilber came with a fish dinner. Refusing to provide answers to most of the specific questions asked by Councilwomen Terry Cohen and Debbie Campbell, Mayor Barrie Tilghman and the members of her City Council Rubber Stamp (Louise Smith, Gary Comegys and Shanie Shields) hemmed, hawed, and used various red herrings to avoid the obvious: Tilghman's gross mismanagement of the city's affairs has resulted in overspending by the City Attorney.
Fortunately for Salisbury's taxpayers, a super majority was needed to appropriate new funds. The ordinance fell on first reading by a 3-2 vote in favor of appropriation.
The most recent case in point was tens of thousands of dollars spent taking a no-win case to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. Not only did the city lose the case, Tilghman's crew lost to a city landlord appearing pro se.
While the ultimate decision to pursue such matters falls squarely on Tilghman, there was none of her usual "I take full responsibility" rap. Part of Wilber's responsibility is to strenuously advise Tilghman NOT to pursue such matters. Perhaps he did, but more likely Wilber just wanted to keep riding the Tilghman gravy train (at the expense of Salisbury taxpayers). Wilber may be a city taxpayer, but he's being reimbursed for his taxes, in spades.
Comegys and Shields both tried to swing the debate away from the many foibles of the administration and Wilber by claiming that "something could be done later, but the city needs legal advice". This would be true enough, EXCEPT once Cohen or Campbell fell for such a tactic their vote would not be needed any longer and there would never be any reform.
Council had already appropriated $40,000 over the budget amount for Wilber's office. Tilghman requested this additional $28,000, and had previously requested a total of $88,000 over the amount budgeted for the City Attorney.
Do not be surprised if (when?) we find out that the Tilghman gravy train will keep on rolling for Wilber. Tilghman and Comegys will make political hay out of some truly necessary project that is delayed because of no money for legal advice. However, you can be pretty sure that if Tilghman wants something from Wilber, she'll spend the money whether appropriated or not.
My advice to Cohen and Campbell is to not vote for any supplemental appropriation in the future IF it can be shown that Tilghman spent funds on items not previously appropriated by council.

080528 - Correction
Yesterday we published a post reporting that the city spent between $60,000 - $100,000 persecuting (sorry, prosecuting) city landlord Stu Leer through the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. That number was in error. While we cannot confirm that all of the bills have been received by the city, the amount appears to be in $15,000 - $30,000 range.
We apologize for the error.

BUT, WILL BARRIE TILGHMAN DO IT AGAIN?
“It,” in this case, is the payment of fees for legal services rendered for the City at Barrie’s request, but without authorization by the City Council. “Again” refers to the payment that she ordered to be made for services by Robin Cockey and others, including T. J. Maloney, in regard to former Police Chief Dykes. That episode occurred shortly after she was first elected in 1998.
Now, in light of the Council’s failure to amend the budget a second time to appropriate additional funds to pay the City Solicitor, one must wonder if Barrie will repeat her earlier decision to pay the fee stated by Cockey’s law firm without the Council’s approval.
One possible difference of decisive import: back then the funds had been appropriated, but not so now – that’s what the Council declined to do at its May 27 meeting. And there are severe penalties for spending funds that have not been appropriated for the purpose of the expenditure. But is that really enough to stop Barrie from proceeding? Don’t count on it.
A stunt of some sort is being fabricated in the Mayor’s office to “justify” the payment to Wilber’s law firm? Now that you can count on.

Question of the Day, Wed 5/28
There has been much talk about the Dough Roller fire. Last week, Joe had posted the new construction, which ignited more controversy regarding upstairs residency. Most were told during the fire that NO ONE was living upstairs.
According to Joe, Nilly Gibbs has told everyone that NO ONE lived upstairs.
According to MD Coast Dispatch, the article written by Ali Baker on 5/23 states, "Two cops, already in the area for an unrelated matter, had also spotted the smoke, and together they began clearing out customers and making sure that the employee who was living in the upstairs apartments was brought to safety."
Mr. & Mrs. Gibbs told a manager of another Dough Roller that someone WAS LIVING upstairs. They had left a ceramic heater on when had started the fire. This manager gave me this information the day after the fire. She was in my office, where she is a customer.
So, which is it? Who's covering for who? Will there ever be a "cause of fire" on paper?

Welfare Poem
I cross ocean,
poor and broke,
Take bus,
see employment folk.
Nice man treat me
good in there,
Say I need to
see welfare.
Welfare say,
'You come no more,
We send cash
right to your door.'
Welfare checks,
they make you wealthy,
Medicaid it keep
you healthy!
By and by,
I got plenty money,
Thanks to you,
American dummy.
Write to friends
in motherland,
Tell them 'come
fast as you can.'
They come in turbans
and Ford trucks,
I buy big house
with welfare bucks
They come here,
we live together,
More welfare checks,
it gets better!
Fourteen families,
they moving in,
But neighbor's patience
wearing thin.
Finally, white guy
moves away,
Now I buy his house,
and then I say,
'Find more aliens
for house to rent.'
And in the yard
I put a tent.
Send for family
they just trash,
But they, too,
draw the welfare cash!
Everything is
very good,
And soon we
own the neighborhood.
We have hobby
it's called breeding,
Welfare pay
for baby feeding.
Kids need dentist?
Wife need pills?
We get free!
We got no bills!
American crazy!
He pay all year,
To keep welfare
running here.
We think America darn good place!
Too darn good for the white man race.
If they no like us, they can scram,
Got lots of room in Pakistan .
It is interesting that the federal government provides a single refugee with a monthly allowance of $1,890.00 and each can also get an additional $580.00 in social assistance for a total of $2,470.00. This compares very well to a single pensioner who after contributing to the growth and development o f America for 40 to 50 years can only receive a monthly maximum of $1,012.00 in old age pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement. Maybe our pensioners should apply as refugees!
Let's send this to all Americans, so we can all be ticked off and maybe we can get the refugees cut back to $1,012.00 and the pensioners up to $2,470 00 and enjoy some of the money we were forced to submit to the Government over the last 40 or 50 years.

This is a 100% accurate warning. It can be verified on Snopes at http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/dustoff.asp .
All parents should be made aware of this threat.
First, I'm going to tell you a little about me and my family. My name is Jeff. I am a Police Officer for a city which is known nationwide for its crime rate. We have a lot of gangs and drugs. At one point we were # 2 in the nation in homicides per capita. I also have a police K-9 named Thor. He was certified in drugs and general duty. He retired at 3 years old because he was shot in the line of duty. He lives with us now and I still train with him because he likes it. I always liked the fact that there was no way to bring drugs into my house. Thor wouldn't allow it. He would tell on you. The reason I say this is so you understand that I know about drugs.
I have taught in schools about drugs. My wife asks all our kids at least once a week if they used any drugs.
I like building computers occasionally and started building a new one in February. I also was working on some of my older computers. They were full of dust so on one of my trips to the computer store I bought a 3 pack of DUST OFF. Dust Off is a can of compressed air to blow dust off a computer. A few weeks later when I went to use one of them they were all used. I talked to my kids and my two sons both said they had used them on their computer and messing around with them. I yelled at them for wasting the 10 dollars I paid for them.
On February 28 I went back to the computer store. They didn't have the 3 pack which I had bought on sale so I bought a single jumbo can of Dust Off. I went home and set it down beside my computer.
On March 1st, I left for work at 10 PM. Just before midnight my wife went down and kissed Kyle goodnight. At 5:30 am the next morning Kathy went downstairs to wake Kyle up for school, before she left for work. He was propped up in bed with his legs crossed and his head leaning over . She called to him a few times to get up. He didn't move. He would sometimes tease her like this and pretend he fell back asleep. He was never easy to get up. She went in and shook his arm. He fell over. He was pale white and had the straw from the Dust Off can coming out of his mouth. He had the new can of Dust Off in his hands . Kyle was dead.
I am a police officer and I had never heard of this. My wife is a nurse and she had never heard of this. We later found out from the coroner, after the autopsy, that only the propellant from the can of Dust off was in his system. No other drugs. Kyle had died between midnight and 1 AM.
I found out that using Dust Off is being done mostly by kids ages 9 through 15. They even have a name for it. It's called dusting. A take off from the Dust Off name. It gives them a slight high for about 10 seconds. It makes them dizzy A boy who lives down the street from us showed Kyle how to do this about a month before. Kyle showed his best friend. Told him it was cool and it couldn't hurt you. It's just compressed air. It can't hurt you. His best friend said so.
Kyle was wrong. It's not just compressed air . It also contains a propellant called R2. It's a refrigerant like what is used in your refrigerator. It is a heavy gas. Heavier than air. When you inhale it, it fills your lungs and keeps the good air, with oxygen, out. That's why you feel dizzy, buzzed. It decreases the oxygen to your brain, to your heart. IT KILLS YOU.
The horrible part about this is there is no warning. There is no level that kills you. It's not cumulative or an overdose; it can just go randomly, terribly wrong. IT'S NOT AN OVERDOSE . You don't die later. Or not feel good and say I've had too much. You usually die as you're breathing it in. If not you die within 2 seconds of finishing ' the hit.' That 's why the straw was still in Kyle's mouth when he died. Why his eyes were still open. The experts want to call this huffing . The kids don't believe its huffing. And that's why its more accepted. There is no chemical reaction, no strong odor. It doesn't follow the huffing signals. Kyle complained a few days before he died of his tongue hurting. It probably did. The propellant causes frostbite. If I had only known.
It's easy to say hey, it's my life and I'll do what I want But it isn't. Others are always affected. This has forever changed our family's life. I have a hole in my heart and soul that can never be fixed. The pain is so immense I can't describe it. There's nowhere to run from it. I cry all the time and I don't ever cry. I do what I'm supposed to do but I don't really care. My kids are messed up. One won't talk about it. The other will only sleep in our room at night. And my wife, I can't even describe how bad she is taking this. I thought we we re safe because of Thor. I thought we were safe because we knew about drugs and talked to our kids about them.
After Kyle died another story came out. A probation Officer went to the school system next to ours to speak with a student. While there he found a student using Dust Off in the bathroom. This student told him about another student who also had some in his locker. This is a rather affluent school system. They will tell you they don't have a drug problem there. They don't even have a dare or plus program there. So rather than tell everyone about this 'new' way of getting high they found, they hid it. The probation officer told the media after Kyle's death and they, the school, then admitted to it. I know that if they would have told the media and I had heard, it wouldn't have been in my house.
We need to get this out of our homes and school computer labs. Using Dust Off isn't new and some 'professionals' do know about. It just isn't talked about much, except by the kids. They all seem to know about it. April 2nd was 1 month since Kyle died. April 5th would have been his 15th birthday. And every weekday I catch myself sitting on the living room couch at 2:30 in the afternoon and waiting to see him get off the bus
