Salisbury University Winter Storm Warning & Parking Restrictions

Winter Storm Warning & Parking Restrictions

Sunday, March 02, 2014
This notice is to advise the campus community that another winter weather system is approaching the Salisbury area.  The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for snow and sleet, which is in effect from 4:00 AM Monday to midnight Monday night.  The total accumulation of snow and sleet is currently predicted to be 4 to 8 inches.

Students parked on main campus are asked to move their vehicles to the Wayne Street Parking Garage by 8:00 PM this evening (Sunday, March 2nd.)  This move will allow personnel to clear accumulated snow from the main campus parking lots.

In the event of snow, please remember that parking is prohibited on the local roadways designated as emergency snow routes.  In lieu of parking along the roadway, members of the campus community may elect to park in the Wayne Street Parking Garage.  For those who do not possess an applicable Salisbury University parking decal, there is a fee of 50 cents per hour, with a maximum fee of $5.00 per day, to park in the garage.
The SU community is encouraged to monitor local media and check the SU website for any updates, including delays or cancellations.

DelDOT Status Report For Sunday Evening

Dover -- The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Winter Storm Warning in Delaware, effective 9 p.m. Sunday night through 4p.m. on Monday, for is being characterized as a significant winter weather event. The forecast predicts snow accumulations of more than six inches, with the greatest amounts of 10-14 inches expected in central Delaware. Precipitation is forecast to begin as rain tonight and convert to snow after midnight. Based on weather forecasts for tonight and tomorrow, it is likely the State of Delaware will issue a State of Emergency with a level 1 driving warning starting tonight.

DelDOT crews will be fully mobilized tonight and throughout the storm, with more than 450 pieces of equipment on the roads statewide.

DelDOT is urging residents to prepare for the storm by obtaining essential items, including medications, food and batteries, in advance of the expected precipitation.

Because the forecast is for snow to fall at a rate of as much as 1" - 2" per hour, it will be difficult for DelDOT plows to stay ahead of the accumulation on primary roads. For this reason, secondary and minor roads may not be attended to until the snowfall stops some time tomorrow.

With the storm likely to start as a rain event, it will not be effective to pretreat roads with brine today. Brine washes off roads when it rains.

GOVERNOR O'MALLEY ADVISES RESIDENTS TO USE CAUTION AS WINTER STORM MOVES THROUGH THE REGION

ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 2, 2014) – Governor O’Malley advises residents to take appropriate safety precautions as moderate to heavy snow showers make their way across Maryland in the overnight hours.

"As we are faced with another winter storm this season, we encourage all residents to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution if traveling on the roadways is necessary," said Governor Martin O’Malley. “We also encourage employers to monitor weather developments and consider employee and customer safety when making decisions about their operational status."

The Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has been monitoring the weather forecast and has been in touch with the four National Weather Service offices serving the State as well as local emergency management offices. MEMA and other state agencies are closely monitoring conditions to support local efforts.

Troopers Urge Driving Safety During Forecasted Winter Weather

Dover - Weather forecasts currently indicate a major winter storm that will impact the region starting tonight into Monday. Heavy snowfall including a wintry mix, are threats with this storm. This type of weather pattern can create treacherous conditions for motorists who are traveling along Delaware roadways.

Troopers statewide continue to plan and prepare for the forecasted winter storm, as they will be ready and available to patrol, assist disabled vehicles, and manage roadway incidents and hazards for the duration of the event. Most calls for service received by Troopers during winter storms are for vehicle crashes, disabled vehicles, and abandoned vehicles which cause a major problem for DelDOT snow removal equipment and for Troopers responding to emergency situations. Troopers strongly encourage motorists to postpone and avoid unnecessary travel.

There Is Some Interest in Salisbury From The Other Side Of The Bay Bridge But Its Not What You Might Think

Ever since Governor O'Malley was kind enough to offer Salisbury News a State Press Pass, interest in Salisbury has skyrocketed.

All of a sudden we started receiving information from Elected Officials I, (quite frankly) had never heard of. But there's more...

Interested parties from across the Bridge are even more interested in Salisbury News as a whole, as in perhaps a purchase of what we've created.

I've enjoyed the phone calls but to their shock I explained that I never created Salisbury News to make money. I created it to INFORM the public, thanks but no thanks.

In a sense we've all become a large Family, so to speak. You and I both know, if someone were to buy what we have, things would never be the same and I'm just not going to let that happen.

So "Love Us Or Hate Us" Salisbury News isn't going anywhere. Just in case any rumors start flying around about us changing hands, it's NOT true. You have my personal word on that.

Colt not only purchased LWRCI, they also bought Matech with the package.
Salisbury News has learned Colt will also be relocated these companies south. In other words, out of Salisbury. "The Maryland company may relocate to Florida or Texas".

Here we go again Salisbury and Wicomico County. Thanks to Governor O'Malley and President Obama, hundreds of additional jobs will be lost on the Shore. Absolutely Incredible!

Brown Proposes Dream Act Fund; Gansler Unveils Jobs Plan

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown is proposing to create a student loan fund to help students who are not legal residents pay for college.

Brown, who is running in the Democratic primary for governor, announced the policy proposal on Thursday in Silver Spring.

Maryland voters approved the state's version of the Dream Act in a ballot question in 2012. It enables students who are in the U.S. illegally to pay in-state tuition in Maryland, if they can show they or their parents paid state income taxes.

Greenpeace Co-Founder: No Scientific Evidence Of Man-Made Global Warming

There is no scientific evidence that human activity is causing the planet to warm, according to Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore, who testified in front of a Senate committee on Tuesday.

Moore argued that the current argument that the burning of fossil fuels is driving global warming over the past century lacks scientific evidence. He added that the Earth is in an unusually cold period and some warming would be a good thing.

“There is no scientific proof that human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) are the dominant cause of the minor warming of the Earth’s atmosphere over the past 100 years,” according to Moore’s prepared testimony. “Today, we live in an unusually cold period in the history of life on earth and there is no reason to believe that a warmer climate would be anything but beneficial for humans and the majority of other species.”

Special Tax District Legislation Equates To An Entire New Tax Category For Wicomico/Maryland Residents

A few weeks ago, SBYnews published an article about a newly proposed Special tax when it showed up on our radar HB-1279.
This legislation was sponsored by lead Delegate Shiela Hixson and Senator Richard Madaleno - both, Montgomery County Democrats.

Special Taxing Districts - Transportation Improvements and Exemption From County Tax Limitations

Yesterday, the Fiscal Note - (click onto link) - was released and this explains the magnitude as to how this new tax will effect Maryland residents - particularly Charter counties like Wicomico and Talbot that have Revenue Caps.

For our readers who may be so consumed with trying to make 'ends meet' - this equates to an entire new category of taxes that will most likely be included on your annual State/County property tax bill.

If this tax passes - (and that possibility is very real as we are outnumbered in representation 188-9) - then you can expect your annual property tax bill to look like the following:

Typical Example Wicomico Tax Bill
Charges                         Assessment    Rate      Amount

State Real Estate                   100,000     .112       $112.00
County Real Estate                100,000     .9086       908.60
Bay Restore Fee (flush tax)                                       60.00
Aydelotte (tax ditch)                                                   15.00
Urban Services Fund (water & sewer)                       82.50
Special Tax-(Montg. Cty. Rt.)100,000     .2672       267.20

                                                        TOTAL TAX  1,445.30

Now can you see why the argument can be made for an eastern shore secession - Taxation Without Representation

Ordinarily - I would say to contact your State & Local representatives, but now, I'm not sure it does any good anymore.

Article published by Beezer, SBYnews Contributor

From The Desk Of Publisher Joe Albero:

Ladies & Gentlemen, I cannot stress enough how IMPORTANT this information is. Look, I don't mean to belittle the rest of your local Main Stream Media but not one of them have picked up on this, yet this is our third article on this matter and we're trying to express just how important and huge an impact this will create on Wicomico County Residents.

Your local MSM is supposed to be here to HELP you, they are failing. Instead of keeping you informed and up to speed on extremely important issues like this one they are covering the MAJORITY of their stories on news from other states.

ARE YOU READY TO PAY MORE TAXES ABOVE AND BEYOND THE REVENUE CAP? That is exactly what this Bill is all about. We only have until March 6th to spread the word in Annapolis that we will not stand for this proposal.

Salisbury News demands that County Executive and County Council send a letter IMMEDIATELY to Annapolis telling them they do NOT support this Bill.

CNN's Erin Burnett Conducts Ridiculous Interview With Ted Nugent

Ted Nugent came under fire for calling President Obama a “subhuman mongrel,” and he has since apologized for the remark. That didn’t stop CNN’s Erin Burnett, however, from peppering Nugent with endless questions about the incident. You may recall Burnett once referred to former President George W. Bush as a “monkey” – but apparently only those who criticize President Obama deserve to be dragged through the mud.

Kokjohn-Poehler is an out lesbian married to a woman named Ashley Kokjohn. And, given her sexual preference, it may strike some as odd that her job title is "Girl Experience Officer."

Her hiring five months ago was largely missed by the coterie of Girl Scout critics around the country who make the claim that the Girl Scouts have drifted leftward in the past 20 years.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer Vetoes Religious Freedom Bill

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer announced late Wednesday that she had vetoed a bill in the state legislature that would protect religious freedoms but had been labeled as “anti-gay.”

“Senate Bill 1062 does not address a specific or present concern related to religious liberty in Arizona,” Brewer said. “I have not heard of one example in Arizona where a business owner’s religious liberty has been violated.

“The bill is broadly worded and could result in unintended and negative consequences,” Brewer continued. “After weighing all of the arguments, I have vetoed Senate Bill 1062 moments ago.”

Panel Sets Opt-out Fees For Smart Meters

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Public Service Commission has set fees for Maryland's utility customers who do not want smart meters installed in their homes or businesses.

The commission announced the fees on Wednesday for Maryland customers of four utilities. They will become effective for the first full billing cycle after July 1.

The fees are a one-time, upfront fee and a monthly fee. The upfront fee will be payable in three monthly installments.

The upfront fees are $75. The monthly fees are $11 for BGE customers; $14 for Pepco customers; and $17 for customers of Delmarva Power and Light Company and Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative.
The commission says the fees are substantially lower than those proposed by the utilities.

100 Most Dangerous Cities: Welcome To Salisbury, MD.

Bystander: ‘I Thought I Had Freedom of Speech Here.’ Officer: ‘You Don’t! You Just Lost It.’

As Baltimore County cops in Towson, Md., arrested at least two people, a man began filming the scene from the sidewalk. Within moments, he was approached by officers who threatened to arrest him if he didn’t “get the hell out of here.”

“You diverted my attention from that,” an officer says in the video when the man filming argues he hasn’t done anything wrong. “Leave!”

Demanding that a bystander leave the scene of an arrest is not out of line. It’s what another officer said after the man had retreated that is getting so much attention.

“Look at me. Do you see the police presence here? We are not f***ing around, do you understand? Do not disrespect us and do not not listen to us,” the cop is heard saying. “Now walk away and shut your f***ing mouth or you’re going to jail.”

School Bus Driver Smacks Student With Broom In Brawl

INDIANAPOLIS – What happened on an Indianapolis school bus is beyond disturbing, and FOX59 has the video. A bus driver smacks a child with a broom. The driver is suspended, according to the bus company. The shocking video is just part of the story.

FOX59 sat down with the child hit and her mother to get their reaction.

Autumn Bonilla, 14, said she started arguing with the bus driver, while the driver was trying to discipline another child. Bonilla said she swore at the driver, then the two went at it first verbally then physically.

Video appears to show the driver, 47-year-old Charlotte McDaniel, taking a broom to the face of the teen.

BREAKING NEWS: Ariz. Governor Vetoes Controversial Religious Rights Bill

Ariz. Gov. Jan Brewer says she has vetoed a controversial religious rights bill that would have allowed businesses to deny service to gays and others based on faith.

From Fox News

Maybe There Should Be A Law Against Disliking Gay People

Everybody, it seems, is dumping on the Arizona Legislature for passing a bill that codified what used to be a basic principle of commerce; that a business owner could refuse service to a customer if he didn’t want the customer’s business. However, that pinciple has been abrogated, and business owners can be forced into involuntary servitude; all because a few hypersensitive, neurotic gheys got their feelers hurt when photographers, florists, or bakers didn’t want to be a part of their “weddings.”

So, why don’t we just cut to the chase and pass laws making it illegal not to like gay people; with fines and criminal penalties for anyone who uses any word, gesture, expression or behavior that any gay person judges to be insufficiently supportive of his or her lifestyle? The penalties could include mandatory sensitivity training at the offender’s expense; thus providing employment to otherwise utterly useless Gender Studies graduates.

Md. Senate Panel Takes Up Marijuana-Legalization Proposals

ANNAPOLIS -- Dozens of people testifying before Maryland lawmakers on Tuesday called for an end to the state's battle against marijuana, one part of the decades-long national war on drugs that supporters of legalization and decriminalization say has done more harm than good.

In the session's first real wave of marijuana legislation hearings, members of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee weighed measures proposing to make recreational use of the drug legal for people 21 and older. Another proposal would shift possession of small amounts of the drug to a civil, rather than criminal, offense.

In a heated debate, proponents of both bills pointed to what they called the negative consequences of prohibiting marijuana, including the barriers to employment and education created by marijuana-related arrests and the racial disparities that often surface in arrests.

In 2010, Maryland had the fourth-highest arrest rate for marijuana possession, with African-Americans being arrested for possession at higher rates than whites in every county in the state, according to a report released by the ACLU in October.

My Thoughts 2-26-14

There's a couple topics I feel need to be addressed.
We'll start with the Rick Pollitt/Daily Times situation.

I met Rick Pollitt around nine years ago and found him to be a really nice guy with great intentions. Back then he proved to the public he was all about open government and expressed it quite a bit on his campaign trail.

Today, County Executive Rick Pollitt is making it almost impossible to obtain specific information the Daily Times is requesting referencing charges on the County's Credit Card.

The Daily Times asked the County to relieve them of the $800.00+ charges the Executive wants to charge the DT's for copies of the past three years worth of statements and quite frankly it's obvious Rick has something to hide.

After following Rick on his Campaign, it amazes me how much Rick has forgotten where he came from. Rick, there's an election coming up and for what it's worth, I think the taxpayers are going to make you REMEMBER where you came from and the majority will vote for Bob Culver instead.
Now, let's talk about Laura Mitchell. Did you know there's NOTHING in the County Charter that says a candidate can not actually sit on TWO elected positions. That's right. According the the County's Charter Laura Mitchell can hold both City and County Council seats. On top of that Laura is also running for a Central Committee seat AND she's already involved with the MML.

With all due respect Laura, this clearly proves you could actually hold a real job in the real world and the ONLY reason I can see Laura running for the County Council is because it delivers a bigger paycheck.

Now, I did some research last night and spoke to a Congressman who told me that there is state law forbidding Mrs. Mitchell from holding two elected positions but they couldn't recite the actual legislation. So we'll see about that.

By the way, it's still snowing in Delmar.

Today's Survey Question 2-25-14

Do you think shrinking the army
in peace time is a good idea?

Substitute Teacher Tells Kids That Muslims Weren’t Behind 9/11

Apparently, a lot of “educators” these days see the classroom as a platform to promote their stupid conspiracy theories and crank beliefs. A student in Michigan secretly recorded a substitute teacher telling the kids that Muslims weren’t behind 9/11.

Listen to this tripe:

In a video that appears to have been taken with a student’s cell phone, a Grosse Pointe substitute teacher explains that 9/11 was an inside job involving brainwashing by “MKUltra”, most wars are started with ‘false flag’ operations, and that the Jonestown Massacre was most likely a CIA experiment in brain-washing.

He then explains that 9/11′s Mohamed Atta couldn’t have been a Muslim extremist because he had been living in the U.S. for years and, “He had an American girlfriend. He was supposedly addicted to cocaine.”

Glick adds, “Muslim’s don’t do drugs, they don’t date American women.”

Being Proactive In Salisbury And Wicomico County

I've been at this Blog thing going on ten years now. Even I have to admit that it's easy to sit here and play Monday Morning Quarterback on so many different issues.

So what's the answer. Well, a few years ago a business associate came to me and suggested that if I were to criticize, I should take the time to offer solutions. I have attempted to do so in so many ways and it seems because it's a Joe Albero idea, elected officials  tend to go in the opposite direction.

All that being said, allow me to offer the following...

We need to recreate the RESPONSIBILITY of our City Council, County Council, Mayor and County Executive.

Right now we are ALL experiencing a unique financial meltdown here on the Eastern Shore. Not one of you can deny that, so let's all please try to agree on this particular issue.

So, what do we do about it. Yes, Salisbury News seems to be the ONLY one delivering you information on crime daily as well as delivering business closings on a regular basis. So let's start with businesses.

I propose that one of the NEW responsibilities of our elected officials are to go out into their districts and approach businesses and get a feel for where they stand business wise. Perhaps there's a chance we can get involved as a local government BEFORE someone chooses to close their doors, lay off employees or even delay an expansion.

Each Council Member can report back to the Mayor or Executive in a monthly meeting to discuss their findings. This is no different from having a sales staff who are PROACTIVE, knocking on doors to see IF there is a service they can provide. If the salesman doesn't do his job and simply waits for leads to come in, they're useless.

Another thing Wicomico County and Salisbury could propose is a reinvestment back into this community. PAY to train ALL new Employees during their training period. SHOW local businesses we want to support them. Show them we want them to grow. This is putting good money after good money and the INVESTMENT is quite small compared to losing another business, in which we can no longer afford.

We need Representatives who can PROVE they truly want to represent us. Right now we are in a business/financial crisis and we need to not only be proactive, we need to save the Shore from further collapse. We can no longer wait until opportunities fall into our laps. We need to impress upon local businesses, we care.

You wanted me to deliver solutions, here they are. We can discuss crime at another point.

Current Events Lesson - Wicomico/Talbot Revenue Cap

Several years ago (1978) Talbot County instituted a TAX CAP after a similar hugely unacceptable tax increase to Wicomico County incensed the voters to action.  From 1978 until 1995 ballot questions were put before the voters to remove the TAX CAP.  Finally, in January of 1995 a Coalition of Special Interest Groups - Board of Education, Chamber of Commerce, PTA, NAACP, League of Women Voters, and other individuals sued to overturn the Tax Cap and they won!  The TAX CAP was ruled unconstitutional.

Do you think VOICE should have gone for a TAX CAP? That certainly would have been an easy 'kneejerk' thing to do in light of the Court's decision.
