Big Brother Wants to Silence YOU!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the blogosphere …

Politicians have egos.  Let’s face it, you need a healthy ego to run for public office.  There’s nothing wrong with that.  However, when politicians conspire with the bureaucracy – and each other- to prevent average citizens from exercising their First Amendment rights, something is WRONG!

To that end, politicians are turning to campaign finance laws to prevent citizen bloggers from criticizing those self same politicians:

In Ohio, for instance, Edmund Corsi runs GeaugaConstitutionalCouncil.org, a blog that praises and criticizes various local officials. Well, it turns out that some of those officials don’t like getting criticized. Rather than responding with their own speech, however, those pols got the Geauga Board of Elections to file a complaint with the Ohio Election Commission. They said that Corsi violated Ohio’s campaign finance laws because he failed to register, appoint a treasurer and file regular financial reports with the state before daring to speak.

After some legal wrangling, the Commission now reads the complaint to say that Corsi violated the law by not disclosing his name and home address on the website. But, as the Institute for Justice has repeatedly pointed out, mandatory disclosure laws cause far too many people to remain silent. Thankfully, an Ohio-based public interest law firm has come to Corsi’s defense and asked for these charges to be dismissed.

I’m not a huge fan of anonymous blogging, but I certainly don’t support government interfering with the right of an individual to engage in that practice.  What would be next?  Ending all anonymous commenting?  Sure, some folks would argue that this would promote a more “civil” debate on the internet.  It would, if by “civil” you mean one that lacks vigor and passion.  We as readers have a responsibility to be critical of the content placed in front of us – NOT the government.

The Institute for Justice’s Robert Frommer hits the nail right on the head:

If campaign finance “reformers” hate anything, it’s the idea that someone somewhere might be speaking freely about politics.

It’s one thing to require an authority line on something relatively static like a campaign website, blog, or even Facebook page.  However, are we going to see requirements to include an authority line on every “Tweet”?  What about “Re-Tweets”?  Those 140 characters are going to be used up pretty fast.

“Reformers” will never learn.  The only means to enact such “reform” is by instituting a police state.  Personally, I’ll take a coarser public debate.  At least we’ll have a debate then.

Activists Say Tea Party Imposters Infiltrating Elections

In New Jersey, a "Tea Party" candidate surfaces but local activists haven't heard of him. In Michigan, a Democratic operative appears closely tied to a slate of candidates running under the Tea Party banner. In Florida, conservative activists are locked in court over the right to use the Tea Party name.

The list of peculiar Tea Party happenings goes on and on.

As the midterm election nears, allegations are surfacing across the country that Democrats are exploiting conservatives' faith in the Tea Party name by putting up bogus candidates in November -- the claim is that those "Tea Party" candidates will split the GOP vote and clear the way for Democratic victories.

The theories may prove to be more than just conspiracy talk. Some of the allegations are coming directly from local Tea Party activists who are trying to flag the media and election officials as soon as they smell something fishy on the ballot. And they say they've got proof.

"It's obvious it's a Democratic play," said Jason Gillman, a Tea Party activist from Traverse City, Mich.

Gillman, who also authors the blog "Michigan Taxes Too Much" and is running for county commissioner, caused a stir in Michigan politics in late July after he released documents he obtained from state elections officials about the so-called Michigan Tea Party. The documents, he said, showed that of the 23 candidates under the Tea Party name, at least nine of them had affidavits notarized by a local operative for the Oakland County Democratic Party. He said that was the "smoking gun" to prove Democratic involvement -- on top of concerns he and other Tea Partiers had that the candidates on the ticket did not have Tea Party backgrounds.

"Nobody had any idea who these people were," Gillman told FoxNews.com. "We could at least say, without question, it is the Democratic Party putting it on."

At Recess, House GOP Plays Hardball On Town Halls

As members of Congress retreat from Washington this month to spend time in their home states, House Democrats and Republicans have traded barbs accusing each other of hiding from the public this summer.

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) on Friday debuted a page on its website listing dozens of House Democrats it says haven't scheduled town-hall meetings for the six-week recess.

Democrats have fired back, calling the list a lie while accusing Republicans of producing a red herring to mask an empty legislative agenda.

"There's more truth in the pages of the National Enquirer than on this bogus website," said Doug Thornell, a spokesman for Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). "I'm surprised Republicans didn't claim Democrats are sending unicorns to death panels."

Town-hall meetings, where lawmakers fulfilled a time-honored and once typically mundane duty during summer visits home, have become popular venues for frustrated voters to vent their anger at Washington. Democrats particularly faced vocal crowds last summer at such gatherings, some of which degenerated into tussles involving pushing and shoving.

So Republicans say Democrats are dealing with potentially uncomfortable public appearances by simply refusing to meet with voters face to face.

The NRCC Web site as of Sunday listed 69 House Democrats who it says haven't scheduled town-hall meetings, while only six have.

"As Nancy Pelosi's Democrat puppets refuse to face the American people this August, it has become even more apparent that no amount of spin or political attacks will save the Democrat majority from being held accountable for their unpopular agenda on Election Day," said Ken Spain, a spokesman with the NRCC, the fundraising arm of House Republicans.

Evolution Craft Brewing Company Gets Boned By The City AGAIN!

Perhaps John Pick and Jim Ireton are so comfortable with their job security, there's no need to bring in any businesses to Salisbury.
The Evolution Craft Brewing Company purchased the old Union Station in Salisbury hoping to start their brewing company right here in Salisbury. However, the City came back at the AFTER they made the purchase of the building and told them they wanted an "impact fee" of more than $100,000.00!!!!!
Because of the City's proposal, the Brewing Company purchased another piece of property in Delmar, DE. and set up their first plant. Because of the growth, they have been shopping around for yet another building as they will need a space 10 times what they currently have to handle the demand.
You know the old Ice Plant across Rt. 13 from the Hospital. Well, they have allegedly been in negotiations to purchase the property but when it came time to negotiate once again with the City, this time they were told there would be a $300,000.00+ impact fee. Mind you Folks, this company doesn't use sewage or waste water. All of their water is used to manufacture their product and there is no waste.
We're told the company will now consider expanding their facility in Delmar. Spread the word Folks. Salisbury has NO INTEREST in ANY company moving to the area as their Waste Water Treatment Plant cannot handle what it already has, let alone any additions.
Thanks Barrie Tilghman!!!!!!!!

Even A Blind Squirrel Finds A NUT Every So Often

It seems Julie Brewington has finally found an endorsement from a group of rednecks who think guns are the most important topic on the Eastern Shore. These are the guys who believe Obama is going to take their guns away.

Other Candidates are grateful Julie was able to take their endorsement as they don't want to be connected with this group in any way, shape or form. Hey, sometimes you've got to take whatever you can get. I just wouldn't brag about an endorsement from a gun group.

Senator Colburn Receives Maryland Chamber PAC Candidate Endorsement

CAMBRIDGE – Senator Richard F. Colburn (R.-Eastern Shore) is pleased to announce that his candidacy for Maryland State Senate has been endorsed by the Maryland Chamber Political Action committee. Chair of the committee, Ms. Betty Buck, stated “Your work in Annapolis clearly demonstrates that you understand the economic importance of a strong business climate.” Senator Colburn stated, “I am proud of my pro-business voting record and the Chamber’s endorsement. The State of Maryland needs a friendlier business atmosphere, and I will continue to fight for the Eastern Shore businesses. Private Sector job creation is our only way out of this recession.”

Post 64 Baseball's Unlikely Summer Comes To An End

Post 64 Baseball's amazing season of being MD State Champions for the first time ever and advancing to the Regional field of the final 32 American Legion baseball teams in the country came to an end on Sunday in Reading PA. The team came up one day short of a trip to Tacoma Washington and the American Legion World Series.

On Saturday night Salisbury lost to VA 4-1. Canaan Crropper started on the mound and after giving up a 2 run homer in the 3rd was lifted in favor of left hander Andrew Dane who came on and shut down the VA squad for the remainder of the game. Salisbury stranded 15 baserunners and out hit the VA squad 11 to 6 but could not put together any runs. On Sunday the team fell behind early against NJ and an explosive offense 15-1 after 4 innings. They clawed back making it 15-7 but the deficit was too big and the day too short. With a record of 2-2 in regional play after wins over a powerful WVA squad on Thursday night 10-7 and DE on Friday 12-2 their storied season came to an end.

"As the bus was bringing us home last night I realized what an accomplishment these young men achieved in the last 2 months. With a record of 31-9 and having earned a MD title against some of the highest level programs in MD and the region, they are a great baseball team and we will never be the same again after this experience together", said first year manager Bill Cropper. "I have coached in the LLWS in 2007 and a National Championship 14U Travel Team that was ranked #1 nationally in USSSA Baseball in 2009 and this is the best team I have ever been with and the highest level of competition I have ever faced" "We faced premier college level pitching every day along with some of the most elite high school players from MD DE VA PA NY NJ and WVA and were one or two hits and one or two pitchers away from a World Series. No one will ever know the exceptional level of competition we faced and the exceptional level of play by this group of college and local high school players except those with us! What a great run! Salisbury should be proud of their baseball!"

EHRLICH OPPOSES IMPORTANT TOOL IN FIGHT AGAINST CRIME AND TERRORISM

License Plate Reader Technology Is Catching Criminals, Protecting Homeland Security

Baltimore, MD (August 9, 2010)
- In a Washington Times Editorial, Bob Ehrlich's campaign put partisan politics ahead of public safety once again, opposing Maryland law enforcement's use of License Plate Reader (LPR) technology that has helped decrease vehicle thefts by 35.8% while serving as a key Homeland Security tool as well.

Governor O'Malley, who co-chairs the National Governor's Association Homeland Security Committee, was joined last week by Maryland law enforcement officials and community leaders to announce an additional $2 Million in grants to help law enforcement deploy 100 new LPR units across the state. This technology allows police to identify stolen vehicles or tags from those vehicles being sought by police instantly, and is a critical tool in the modern fight against crime.

But through spokesperson Andy Barth, the Ehrlich campaign told the Washington Times that "Ehrlich would need to see compelling arguments that these 'readers' have real benefit to remove concerns about government surveillance."

According to O'Malley deputy campaign manager Rick Abbruzzese:

"Bob Ehrlich is opposed to this critical crime fighting and homeland security tool either because he doesn't get it, or because he can't support anything proposed by Governor O'Malley because he thinks it would hurt him in this campaign. Either way, his position on this issue is out of touch, and would quite simply make Maryland less safe."

In the wake of the Faisal Shahzad car bomb attempt in New York City, license plate reader technology was employed to help track Shahzad's movements from the days leading up to the attempted attack. And officials in Long Beach, California say the technology has allowed them to catch murderers and even alert the FBI to a suspect on their terrorism watch list.

Abbruzzese concluded:

"Bob Ehrlich left the state of Maryland a shameful backlog of 24,000 unprocessed DNA samples when he left office, meaning hundreds of criminals were walking around Maryland free. Now, he wants to withhold vital tools that law enforcement professionals say are proven to reduce vehicle theft and serve as a key component in our Homeland Security efforts. He should be embarrassed that trying to win an election so clearly comes before the safety of Maryland families."

Blessing Of The Combines In Snow Hill

The Blessing of the Combines in Snow Hill was one heck of an event. If you were fortunate enough to take the time to enjoy this event, you were one of thousands of people out enjoying a perfect day.

Ever since I started Salisbury News some 6 years ago I have had the pleasure of traveling all over the Eastern Shore. If someone were to ask me which Town I enjoy the most I'd have to reply, I can't answer that. Between Berlin, Snow Hill, Princess Anne, Pocomoke, Crisfield, the list just goes on and on and I couldn't tell you which one is better than the rest.

What I can tell you is, the Eastern Shore, (as a whole) is by far the best place anyone could spend their upbringing and or retirement because the people are so great.

Several politicians were on hand to greet the thousands of people that attended this event. The only downer, (for me personally) to this event was the lack of Press. I didn't see WBOC, WMDT or the DT's and quite frankly that's a shame. We should be encouraging these kinds of events and support the people that support us.

Nevertheless, great job Snow Hill!

CORRECTION: I have been informed that the Press was in fact there. While I'm taking their word for it, I did not see a single one of them there but I am told by a confident source they were. Therefore I apologize, forgive me.
