Acting ICE director calls out jurisdictions with sanctuary policies for threatening public safety

WASHINGTON — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Matthew T. Albence held a White House press briefing Thursday to explain how sanctuary policies threaten public safety and called on the public to hold their local lawmakers accountable. The briefing made clear that local jurisdictions across the U.S. that refuse to cooperate with ICE are complicit in the crimes committed by aliens who ICE could have otherwise been arrested and removed.

Under federal law, ICE has the authority to lodge immigration detainers with law enforcement partners who have custody of individuals arrested on criminal charges and who ICE has probable cause to believe are removable aliens. The detainer form asks the other law enforcement agency to notify ICE in advance of release and to maintain custody of the alien for a brief period so that ICE can take custody of that person in a safe and secure setting upon release from that agency’s custody. Across the United States, several jurisdictions refuse to honor detainers and instead choose to willingly release criminal offenders back into their local communities where they are free to offend.

Acting Director Albence made clear that state and local jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with immigration enforcement not only betray their duty to protect public safety, but force ICE to be more visible in those areas.

ICE arrests 54 in NJ during a week-long enforcement action targeting at-large criminal aliens released into the community

NEWARK, N.J. – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) arrested 54 individuals throughout New Jersey during a weeklong action targeting public safety threats who were released from local law enforcement custody into the community instead of being transferred to ICE.

They hail from 12 countries – Mexico (21), Jamaica (1), Ecuador (2), Honduras (4), Dominican Republic (3), El Salvador (9), Guatemala (3), Guyana (1), Brazil (7), Costa Rica (1), Georgia (1) and Pakistan (1).

Even with these arrests, there are still public safety threats in the community.

• Luciano Trejo-Dominguez, 33, was arrested Aug. 12 by the Vineland Police Department for aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault (victim 13-15 years old), criminal restraint, criminal sexual contact and endangering the welfare of a child. On Aug. 13, 2019 and Aug. 14, 2019, respectively, the Pacific Enforcement Response Center and the ICE office in Mount Laurel both lodged detainers on Trejo-Dominguez with the Cumberland County Jail. He was released into the community Aug. 23, 2019, and remains at-large.

ICE arrests more than 80 during 5-day enforcement action in New York City, the Hudson Valley, and Long Island

NEW YORK – Officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) arrested more than 80 during a 5-day period, ending Sep. 25, in New York City, the Hudson Valley and Long Island.

During the enforcement effort, ERO arrested 82 individuals for violating U.S. immigration laws. Of those arrested, more than 40 had been previously released from local law enforcement custody with an active detainer. Ten of those arrested were previously removed from the United States and returned illegally. Several had prior felony convictions for serious or violent offenses, such as sexual crimes, weapons charges, and assault, or had past convictions for significant or multiple misdemeanors.

“Of those arrested during these five days, more than half were released from local custody with an active detainer. That is more than three dozen illegal aliens with convictions or criminal charges who were released back into New York communities, further putting the safety of its residents at risk,” said Thomas R. Decker, field office director for ERO New York. “Because of the senseless local laws in New York City, thousands of illegal aliens have been released; and as this trend continues, thousands more will be released back into the communities to threaten the safety of our city’s citizens. ICE deportation officers continue to focus enforcement efforts on arresting and removing those criminal aliens who think the laws of this country are mere suggestions.”

With the release of the rough transcript of the July 25 call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Trump, Schiff's prediction that it would show Trump had ‘crossed the Rubicon’ has failed to materialize,” former Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) writes in Fox News. “There was no quid pro quo – no ‘browbeating’ of a foreign leader. Just two heads of state talking about Ukraine's role in 2016 U.S. election interference and discussing getting to the bottom of the corruption that has spilled over between the two countries. With his history of deliberately distorting the truth, secretly disclosing classified information, and openly converting the House Intelligence Committee into a partisan opposition research operation, Schiff has repeatedly proven he cannot be trusted.”

The Trump Administration “agreed on Wednesday to stay in a United Nations body that has regulated international mail service for more than a century after delegates agreed during emergency talks to change the way postal fees are structured,” Nick Cumming-Bruce reports for The New York Times. The deal “will allow the United States to start setting its own postal fees in July and allow other countries that receive more than 75,000 metric tons of mail a year to start phasing in higher rates in January 2021.” White House Director of Trade and Manufacturing Policy Peter Navarro called the decision a “huge victory for millions of American workers and businesses,” saving the U.S. between $300 million and $500 million a year.

“In the media’s efforts to tie President Donald Trump with its latest conspiracy theory, CNN skipped an entire section of the released and unredacted transcript of a phone call to charge Trump with requesting a favor he never asked for,” Tristan Justice reports for The Federalist. The transcript that CNN read on air wrongly connected the word “favor” with President Trump “asking the Ukrainian leader to look into former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter’s questionable business dealings with a Ukrainian energy company”—a full 540 words later.

“The United States and Japan outlined initial details of a trade deal Wednesday as they … iron out a broader agreement,” Jacob Pramuk reports for CNBC. “The first stage of the accord will open markets up to about $7 billion in U.S. agricultural products, President Donald Trump said at a signing ceremony with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the United Nations. Japan will also reduce tariffs on products such as beef and pork, and eliminate tariffs on goods such as almonds, blueberries and broccoli.”

OCEAN CITY — With the first-ever Jellyfish Festival in June providing something to build on, organizers this week filed an application with the Town of Ocean City to bring a bigger and better event back to the resort next year.

The inaugural Jellyfish Music Festival, held on the beach downtown and at venues all over the resort in June, provided a blueprint of sorts for future events. The event featured a live entertainment festival combined with action sports, family-oriented interactive entertainment and arts and culture in and around the Jellyfish Tentacle Village.

It utilized the town’s best assets including a state-of-the-art sound stage on the beach downtown and brought in significant headline acts for the first year. The live entertainment at the main stage on the beach downtown featured three theme nights.

Fresh Friday catered to a younger, millennial crowd with acts such as Badfish and Ballyhoo. Classic Saturday featured acts catering to a slightly older demographic including Styx, Crack the Sky and the Rayvns, for example. On Sunday, the festival transitioned to a family-friendly “music with a message” theme with acts such as Newboys and Crowder.

Laurel Man Charged with 5th Offense DUI After Crash-Laurel

Laurel- The Delaware State Police have arrested 36-year-old Jerod M. Kernodle with his 5th offense DUI after he was involved in a motor vehicle crash.

The incident occurred on September 25, 2019 at approximately 5:57 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on Sussex Highway (US 13), south of Trussum Pond Road involving injuries.  Further investigation revealed that a 2008 Chrysler Minivan was stopped at a red light on northbound US 13, when a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage, operated by Kernodle struck the rear of the vehicle.

When Troopers made contact with Kernodle an odor of alcohol was detected and a DUI investigation ensued.  A computer inquiry revealed that Kernodle  had four previous DUI convictions, making this his fifth offense, and a suspended driver’s license.

The operator of the minivan a 33-year-0ld female and her 7-year-old passenger were transported to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Kernodle did not sustain injury and was taken into custody at the scene.  He was transported back to Troop 5 where he was charged with the following:

•  5^th Offense Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol (Felony)
• Vehicular Assault Third Degree (2 counts)
• Driving While Suspended

Kernodle was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace court and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $6000.00 cash only bond.

CDC case study finds deer with tuberculosis can transmit bacteria to people

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning hunters that deer with tuberculosis can transmit the bacteria to humans.

The report stems from a case in Michigan in 2017 where a 77-year-old man who had no exposure to people or countries with endemic tuberculosis was diagnosed with the disease.

According to the CDC, the man was a regular hunter and had dressed deer in the state for 20 years. Following lab tests, the man was found to have been exposed to mycobacterium bovis, a bacterium found in deer, cattle, bison, and elk which can be spread to humans and cause TB.

Jeep Wrangler under investigation after reports of bad frame welds, steering issues

The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration is investigating complaints from Jeep Wrangler owners about poor frame welds and potentially related steering problems.

The action involves approximately 270,000 JL Wranglers from the 2018 and 2019 model years and comes after 3,566 complaints and a petition filed by an owner last year.

No accidents or injuries have been linked to the reports.

New Drugs May Offer Prostate Cancer Cure

It’s fitting that during the month of September, which is National Prostate Awareness month, British researchers have announced a new class of medications that shows promise for inhibiting prostate cancer growth.

According to Medical Daily, researchers from the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology and the Department of Chemistry at the University of Bath have zeroed in on a protein — called AMACR — that is highly active in aggressive prostate cancers, as well as in a number of other cancers.

The UK team developed new drugs that targeted and lowered the activity level of this aggressive protein. And this discovery may open up new pathways for research in treating a whole range of cancers, they say.

“This means that we have some really promising avenues to explore as we work toward developing new treatments against prostate cancer and other cancers where AMACR is involved,” says Dr. Matthew Lloyd, lead author from the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology.

Macron Slams Greta Thunberg After Teenage Activist Sues France Over Climate - But Leaves Out China

French President Emmanuel Macron slammed Greta Thunberg after the 16-year-old climate activist filed a legal complaint accusing five countries of inaction on global warming in violation of the 30-year-old UN Convention on the Rights of a Child. Germany, France, Brazil, Argentina and Turkey.

Notably, she left out China - which is the world's worst polluter by total volume.

After browbeating the UN for 'stealing her childhood' on Monday, Thunberg tweeted "Today at 11:30 I and 15 other children from around the world filed a legal complaint against 5 nations over the climate crisis through the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child."

Thunberg's complaint calls out nations that have ratified the UN treaty, yet - according to her - have not upheld their obligations. And again, she's said nothing about pollution from China or India.

Sunfest Attendance Exceeds Previous Record By 18%

OCEAN CITY — With picture-perfect weather and a diverse line-up of live music, Sunfest weekend last week was by far the highest attended, blowing away the previous record set just last year.

Wow is about the only way to describe the 45th Annual Sunfest celebration last week. The four-day event attracted 317,419 visitors, blowing away the record 268,406 that attended last year’s event. The new mark set last weekend represented a 18% increase over the 2018 record.

With a great line-up of live entertainment and the usual collection of food and craft vendors along with a few new wrinkles, everything lined up well for the 2019 Sunfest, but the real star was the weather. With clear skies and warm temperatures leading up to and during the event, Sunfest enthusiasts came in droves as evidenced by the numbers.

It’s important to note the 317,419 attendees reported represent those who went through the gates at the event at the Inlet and does not necessarily reflect the total number of visitors in Ocean City last weekend. Anecdotally, traffic in town and crowds at area businesses made it appear as if it was a peak summer weekend. Ocean City Special Events Director Frank Miller said it became evident early on the 2019 Sunfest event was primed to be a record-breaker.

At Least 60,000 Veterans Committed Suicide From '08-'17

At least 60,000 U.S. veterans have committed suicide over the span of a decade, according to a report released Friday by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The report highlighted data from 2008 to 2017 and found the veteran suicide rate was 1.5 times the rate of non-veterans.

Firearms were the method of suicide in nearly 71% of male veteran deaths and 43.2% of female veteran suicide deaths in 2017.

There is "no all-encompassing explanation for suicide" says the VA's 2019 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report.

President Trump denied reports that he tried to stave off House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's impeachment announcement and asserted that her power has been subsumed by the "radical Left."

Trump gave a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday at the United Nations in New York. Both presidents denied allegations that Trump attempted to withhold military aid to Ukraine to force the country to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden.

"No, she's lost her way," Trump said, responding to a question regarding whether he tried to strike a deal on impeachment with Pelosi.

"She's been taken over by the radical Left. She may be radical Left herself, but she really has lost her way," Trump continued. "I spoke to her about guns yesterday. She didn’t even know what I was talking about."

Local governments spend millions caring for migrants released by Border Patrol

When U.S. Border Patrol agents started releasing illegal migrants at a San Antonio bus station in late March, sometimes in the middle of the night with no warning, Colleen Bridger didn't know what to do.

The assistant city manager wanted to speak with the Border Patrol to figure out what was going on, how to coordinate the drop-off times and how to assess the volume of migrants San Antonio could expect in the future. But because the Texas city is 150 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border and had never dealt with an influx of illegal immigrants before, there was a problem.

"I didn't even know the right department or division or office to call," Bridger said.

Since then, San Antonio has received more than 31,000 migrants released by the Border Patrol after they requested asylum. The city converted a former Quiznos restaurant into a migrant processing center, gave them food and medical screenings, provided cellphones so they could call relatives in the U.S, and partnered with a local church to provide overnight bed space. All told, those efforts have cost San Antonio more than $540,000.

A USA TODAY review of dozens of communities along the border – and some far from it – shows that local governments have spent at least $7 million over the past year to care for thousands of illegal migrants released after being detained by the federal government.

Republicans rejected claims by House Democrats that President Trump committed an impeachable offense when he asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate corruption allegations involving former Vice President Joe Biden.

“I think the House is so far over their skis on this thing,” Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin said Wednesday after viewing a memorandum about the July 25 call released in the morning.

Johnson was among a dozen House and Senate GOP lawmakers invited to an 8 a.m. meeting at the White House, where they were met by White House counsel Pat Cipollone and copies of the embargoed memorandum, which outlined the conversation between Trump and Zelensky.

Democrats wrote to the Ukrainian government in May 2018 urging it to continue investigations into President Donald Trump’s alleged collusion with Russia in the 2016 presidential campaign — collusion later found not to exist.

The demand, which came from U.S. Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Dick Durbin (D-IL), and Patrick Leahy (D-VT), resurfaced Wednesday in an opinion piece written by conservative Marc Thiessen in the Washington Post.

Ironically, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) declared Tuesday that the mere possibility that President Trump had asked Ukraine to continue an investigation of former Vice President Joe Biden — even without a quid pro quo — was enough to trigger an impeachment inquiry. The public is invited for Crab Balls and/or Steamed Shrimp on Friday, September 27th, from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Delmar VFW Post, 200 West State St. in Delmar.

Homemade hush puppies will be served with each platter. The cost is determined by the single item or combination selected.

Carry outs may be ordered in person only after 5 p.m.

Proceeds benefit the many local charities and organizations supported by the Delmar VFW.
