Forgive Me Mayor For What I Have Done

Tonight Is Barrie Tilghman's Last Council Meeting

Mayor Tilghman responds to the question, So what's up with the $84,000,000.00 WWTP?

This is it Folks, tonight is the last night to see Barrie Tilghman LIVE in a City Council Meeting. I feel sorry for former Police Officer Brian Beaver who will have to receive a Shadow Box from the current Mayor and not be recognized by the new Mayor who would present it with honors and true gratitude.

Nevertheless, tonight at 6:00 PM will be it. If you feel like stomaching Barrie Tilghman for the last time, be there or be square. I have yet to decide if my own stomach can take it but we'll see what happens. I'd like to be there for my friend Brian who served this community so well.

New Castle Man Charged With Aggravated Menacing

Location of Incident: 1900 block of Maryland Avenue, Wilmington, Delaware, New Castle County

Date and Time of Occurrence: Saturday, April 11, 2009, at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Suspect(s): Josue Hermida-Rivera, 19, of Amstel Drive in New Castle, Delaware

Resume: This past Saturday afternoon, Troopers were called to the area of the 1900 block of Maryland Avenue for the report of an armed subject following another subject in his vehicle.

The Delaware State Police dispatch center, RECOM, continually gathered critical information pertaining to the whereabouts of the suspect and kept responding units updated as they closed in. A Newport Police Officer was first to arrive in the area and apprehended the suspect, Josue Hermida-Rivera, driving in his blue Ford Explorer on Middleboro Road.

Troopers then contacted the victim to ascertain the facts of the case. It had been alleged that a dispute took place the day before between the victim and Mr. Rivera at Delaware Park. The victim said he broke out a window to Rivera’s vehicle. At the time of the original incident, the victim agreed to pay Rivera for the damage and the two parties went about their business.

At about 2:30 on Saturday, the day after the Delaware Park incident, the victim was driving on Maryland Avenue when he spotted Rivera. Rivera drove up along side him, brandished a handgun and threatened the victim with it. The victim fled into Banning Park and the suspect followed.

With an understanding as to how the case originated, officers then conducted a canvas of the area and located a loaded Glock 9mm handgun Troopers believed Rivera tossed out of the window when he saw officers behind him.

Josue Hermida-Rivera was formally charged with Aggravated Menacing (felony) and Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony (felony). He was arraigned and ordered held by the Department of Corrections in lieu of $5,000.00 secured bond.

Four Years Ago

It was four years ago Jennifer and I were traveling to Kentucky, Ohio, New York and Connecticut soon after we purchased the Ranch in Delmar, reaching out to save foals from going to slaughter.

My how time flies! All in all we saved 35 foals, brought them home, nursed them back to health and ultimately adopted them out to the most wonderful people and families we were ever blessed to meet and come to know.

It was a 24 hour a day job where friends and people we had never met before came to help in any way they could. Today we still have a couple of horses left at the Ranch who have grown to be gentle and very happy. We're confident the same can be said about ALL of these Foals we had rescued.

While some have challenged our intent as to just what kind of people we are, perhaps those who continue to challenge us today should look in a mirror and ask themselves, what have you done lately? We have taken on many (lose/lose) situations over the years and quite frankly I think many should look at where we're at today.

In the overall scope of it all, I'd say we're winners in pretty much everything we have had our hands in. Then again, I'm bias.

Let Me End Your Easter Sunday With Something Very Unexpected Yet Very Special

One Year Ago Today

Mayor Barrie Tilghman throws in the first pitch of the Shorebirds Season. When she went to throw the ball to home plate she threw it right into the ground at her own feet. She must have had a ton of glue still left on her fingers from all the shredding going on earlier that day.

DMV Announces New Secure Driver License And Identification Card System

Dover -- The Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), a division of the Department of Transportation (DelDOT), is in the process of implementing a new secure driver license and identification card system. The DMV awarded a contract to L-1 Identity Solutions on April 4, 2009. L-1, based out of Stamford, Connecticut, will develop and implement a new system that will increase the security process by which the DMV issues driver licenses and could be in effect as early as November 1, 2009.

Under this new secure system, the most recognizable change for DMV customers will be their photograph being taken at the very beginning of the application process instead of at the end, as it is currently. Customer service will become more individualized because one DMV employee will stay with a single individual throughout the entire transaction. Initially, this could create longer wait times, but it is necessary in order to achieve material compliance with the federal secure credentialing requirements.

Also, the new system will include enhanced facial recognition technology in order to protect Delaware residents from identity theft. The system will compare the applicant's current photograph with the division's entire photograph database to ensure the applicant does not have a driver license/identification card in another name and to ensure the individual is not trying to commit identity theft.

Another noticeable change in the Delaware driver license and identification card process is the documents that will be required of an applicant in order to initially obtain the new secure credential. In order to obtain a new secure driver license/identification card, applicants will be required to provide source documents (e.g. birth certificate, passport, immigration documents) to establish their identity, social security information and proof of residency. It is important to note that once the applicant has obtained a new secure driver license/identification card, the applicant will not be required to provide the source documents upon renewal.

The Delaware DMV's new secure driver license/identification card system is part of a nationwide effort to comply with the Real ID Act. Congress passed the Act in 2005 after the 9/11 Commission recommended that the United States improve its system for issuing identification documents. The DMV's new system will improve the integrity and security of State-issued driver licenses and identification cards, which in turn, will help fight terrorism and reduce fraud.

The new secure driver license/identification card will be uniquely marked and will meet all federal requirements for proof of identification. Delaware residents will be able to use these secure documents as proof of identity for federal purposes such as boarding commercial aircrafts and entering federal buildings.

Delaware residents who currently have a Delaware driver license/identification card may choose to obtain a "non-compliant" driver license/identification card; however, the "non-compliant" driver license/identification card will not be able to be used as proof of identity for federal purposes such as boarding commercial aircrafts or entering federal buildings. The non-compliant card will not require source documents like the secure credential.

The division will provide additional information regarding the new requirements to Delaware residents prior to them renewing their existing driver license or identification card.

BREAKING NEWS!

The Count is DEAD EVEN right now for the Cynthia Polk/Shanie Shields District 1 Council Seat. They held 5 absentee ballots out til Friday.

ONE MORE WEEK!

It's Over! There's only 7 DAYS LEFT before Barrie Tilghman walks out of the GOB for the very last time as Mayor of Salisbury.

No special positions for Mike Dunn and Michael Day. A new Mayor will step in and re interview just about anyone and everyone.

It sure makes you wonder, what will happen to Paul Wilber? Chief Webster? John Pick? Lore Chambers? Pam Oland? Ron Alessi? Richard Insley?

Will the new Mayor Ireton create a special Hot Line like the County did and give all employees a Free Pass at any wrong doing if they expose many of the questionable things that have been going on over the past 12 years?

If some of the people are in fact replaced, (and many more) who do YOU think might fill those positions? I say it's worth the discussion and guess as to who YOU think might fill those positions best.

HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF SOMEONE WAS RECORDING YOUR CONVERSATION?

Much has been said about the recent arrest in Pocomoke from a Blogger recording a conversation without the recipients knowledge and then only bits and pieces of the conversation was published on their Blog.

How would YOU feel if someone recorded a conversation you had no knowledge was being recorded and then you heard it very soon after on a Blog?

I'm hoping we DON'T go back to their situation. I simply want to know how YOU would feel if someone recorded you without your knowledge and then blasted that conversation on a Blog without your permission. Do you feel it is legal, or not?

Let's add that you work for a company as a Clerk and someone walked in, asked you a question and your conversation was being recorded without your knowledge. This should get interesting.

MARVIN LONG SHOULD NOT BE REAPPOINTED TO THE PAC 14 BOARD

Listed on the agenda for tonight’s meeting of the Salisbury City Council is a resolution to appoint certain persons as the City’s designated members of the board of directors of PAC 14. One of them, Marvin Long is a former member of both the Wicomico County Council and PAC 14’s board who more recently supported Muir Boda in the recent City election – see his letter, below, that appeared in The Daily Times. Boda unsuccessfully challenged Debbie Campbell for the Council seat that she currently holds.

As a member of the PAC 14 board for some years, Mr. Long apparently was content that it do very little, and in recent years virtually nothing. When Ms. Campbell was appointed to the board and tried to have it perform its management oversight and other intended functions, Long did not support her initiative.

He seems to be an accomplice if not an actual instigator of the once clandestine attempt to seize control of PAC 14 from the City and County governments – some of the primary players in that scheme being Barrie Tilghman, Gary Comegys, Louise Smith, Shanie Shields, Michael Pretl and Phil Tilghman. Last fall, when the County Council refused to condone that conspiracy, Long resigned from the board. He has appeared before the Council in an effort to gain City recognition of their scheme.

It is clear both that Long supports the conspiracy to take over PAC 14 and also that this is why Louise Smith and Gary Comegys are trying to rush through his appointment before the new Mayor and Council are in charge. To put it plainly, Mr. Long is a ringer.
* * * * *

[This letter by Mr. Long recently appeared in the Daily Times]

April 3, 2009

Salisbury shortly will be electing a mayor and two council members. One of the City Council members will represent District 2, where I reside. The incumbent representative, Debbie Campbell, is running for re-election. I cannot support her, though her parents live just around the corner from me and she grew up in my neighborhood. Although I personably like Campbell, I am disappointed in her actions while in office.

Although many regard her incessant demands for more information before making a decision a positive, my years in public service suggest this is a delaying technique used to avoid making a decision. After all, one is elected to be a decision-maker, which can sometimes be tough.

Her consistent negative votes bring to mind a City Council member when I was in high school. He voted no all the time, realizing the votes were there to pass the action anyway. However, his actions had the local newspapers referring to him as a public watchdog -- striking similarity here.

I interviewed Muir Boda and asked him pointed questions. I found him refreshingly candid. He said he hoped, if elected, to be a good steward of city funds and resources. He had followed city government closely and was aware of the issues. He emphasized the need to eliminate the divide on the council and work together to change the city's image.

I was impressed by his maturity and knowledge. I think he would be a fine council member.

Therefore, I am supporting Boda.

RED FRIDAY'S

Red Shirt

If the red shirt thing is new to you, read below how it went for one man...

Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine Sergeant traveling with a folded Flag, but did not put two and two together..
After we boarded our flight, I turned to the Sergeant , who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.

"No, he responded."
"Heading out I asked?"
"No. I'm escorting a Soldier home."
"Going to pick him up?"
"No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq , I'm taking him home to his Family."

The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the Soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the Soldier's Family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days.

I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, "Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do."

Upon landing in Chicago , the Pilot stopped short of the gate, and made the following announcement over the intercom:

"Ladies! and Gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steeley of the United States Marine Corps join us on this flight. He is escorting a fallen Comrade back home to his Family.. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his Fellow Soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign.."

Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the Sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American.

So here's a public "Thank You" to our Military Men and Women for what you do, so we can live the way we do.

Red Fridays: Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing RED every Friday... The reason? Americans who support our Troops used to be called the "Silent Majority." We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, Country and Home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing. Many Americans, like you, like Me, and all our Friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of Americans supports our Troops.. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our Troops with Dignity and Respect starts this Friday -- and continues each and every Friday until the Troops all come home, sending a deafening message that .. every red-blooded American who supports our Men and Women afar, will wear something RED.

By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of RED much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this Country will share this with Acquaintances, Coworkers, Friends, and Family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED; and it will let our Troops know the once "Silent Majority" is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the Media lets on.

The first thing a Soldier says when asked, "What can we do to make things better for You?" is: "We need your Support and your Prayers. "Let's get the word out and lead with Class and Dignity, by example, and wear something RED every Friday.

Can I Borrow $25.00

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door.

SON: ' Daddy, may I ask you a question? '

DAD: ' Yeah sure, what it is? ' replied the man.

SON: ' Daddy, how much do you make an hour? '

DAD: ' That ' s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing? ' the man said angrily.

SON: ' I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour? '

DAD: ' If you must know, I make $50 an hour. '

SON: ' Oh, ' the little boy replied, with his head down.

SON: ' Daddy, may I please borrow $25? '

The father was furious, ' If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I don ' t work hard everyday for such childish frivolities. '

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.

The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy ' s questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?

After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down , and started to think:

Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $25.00 and he really didn ' t ask for money very often The man went to the door of the little boy ' s room and opened the door.

' Are you asleep, son? ' He asked.

' No daddy, I ' m awake, ' replied the boy.

' I ' ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier ' said the man. ' It ' s been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here ' s the $25 you asked for. '

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. ' Oh, thank you daddy! ' he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills.

The man saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again.

The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father.

' Why do you want more money if you already have some? ' the father grumbled.

' Because I didn ' t have enough, but now I do, ' the little boy replied.

' Daddy, I have $50 now.. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you. '

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little son, and he begged for his forgiveness.
It ' s just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life. We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts. Do remember to share that $50 worth of your time with someone you love.

If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of hours.. But the family & friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

Further Information On The Standpipe

This photo is the shop of F.A. Grier Sr. which sat between where R.C. Holloways and Farmers and Planters stands today. He was a machinist and repaired steamboats and water craft engines. Mr Grier was the fire chief from late 1880's to 1900.

On April 10th we created the following article, SALISBURY’S “STANDPIPE” – JUST HOW “HISTORIC” IS IT REALLY? and now we have answers as to just how "OLD" the Standpipe is, thanks to Bryan Records. He left the following message andf assisted us in finding the proper information above in the photo provided above.

Bryan Records said...
During my research for the Fire Department Heritage Center I was able to track the standpipe to around 1899. On March 13, 1899 the Jackson's Mill burned and the city was alomost burned a third time. The mill ran down Mill St. from around Lemon Hill La. to the middle of where Rt. 50 sits today. The standpipe was erected using Sweedish steel and the contractor was F.A. Grier SR. and his brother Robert. The site was selected because of its elevation as the high point of the City. The plot of land was known as Firemans park where outdoor functions were held. I have a photograph of F.A. Grier's shop on the river in 1903 that clearly shows the standpipe in the background.

Middletown Teen Dies In Fatal Crash

Smyrna - The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the fatal crash involving a 17 year old Middletown girl after she failed to stop on the command of police officer’s and rammed into a Smyrna Police Cruiser early this morning.

Sunday at approximately 1:10 am a uniformed trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2008 Ford F250 pick-up on US 13 in the area of Blackbird Forest Road for suspicion of DUI. The operator ignored the emergency lights and siren of the police cruiser and failed to stop for the trooper continuing southbound on US 13 in the limits of Smyrna.

The operator then made an abrupt attempt to turn west onto Smyrna-Leipsic Road when the Ford failed to negotiate the turn and crashed into a fence on the southwest side of the intersection. A Smyrna Police Officer, in a fully marked police cruiser with lights and siren activated, pulled behind the pick-up in an effort to apprehend the operator. The officer, along with a DSP trooper, exited their patrol vehicles when the operator of the Ford Pick Up accelerated the vehicle in reverse ramming the Smyrna police cruiser nearly striking the approaching officers.

The Ford Pick-Up then fled west on Sunnyside Road. As officers were attempting to catch up to the fleeing vehicle the Ford exited the north edge of the roadway and overturned several times. As a result of the crash, the operator, who was later identified as Natacha A. Mitchell, 17 of Middletown died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

Preliminary investigation revealed Ms. Mitchell was operating the vehicle with a revoked driver’s license. The crash remains under investigation.
