Concealed carry without a permit: Will crime go up or down?

New Hampshire, Kansas, Mississippi, and Montana are considering legislation that would no longer require special permits to carry concealed weapons in public. Five states already have such laws.

This week, lawmakers in New Hampshire, Kansas, Mississippi, and Montana advanced bills that, if made into law, would no longer require special permits to carry concealed weapons in public. Five states already have no concealed permit requirement – part of a broader trend toward so-called constitutional carry.

Also this week, Sen. John Cornyn (R) of Texas introduced federal legislation that would turn concealed weapons permits into something like state driver’s licenses, which are legal anywhere in the United States. The measure nearly passed a Democrat-controlled Senate last year, meaning it could well end up on President Obama’s desk in 2015.

With about one gun already in circulation for every American, critics, including many in law enforcement, say constitutional carry will only make life more dangerous. However, so far, studies have failed to conclusively prove or disprove another correlation – between expanded gun carry and the decline in general and violent crime rates that has occurred in the US over the past two decades.

Military approves hormone therapy for Chelsea Manning

WASHINGTON — In a first for the Army, Chelsea Manning, the convicted national-security secrets leaker, has been approved for hormone therapy for transition to a woman at the Army's Fort Leavenworth prison, according to a memo obtained Thursday by USA TODAY.

Manning remains a soldier as well as an inmate.

"After carefully considering the recommendation that (hormone treatment) is medically appropriate and necessary, and weighing all associated safety and security risks presented, I approve adding (hormone treatment) to Inmate Manning's treatment plan," Col. Erica Nelson, the commandant of the Fort Leavenworth Disciplinary Barracks in Kansas, wrote in a Feb. 5 memo.

Formerly named Bradley Manning, the soldier was convicted of sending classified documents to anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. Manning is serving a 35-year prison sentence and is eligible for parole in about seven years.

Cindy Crawford lingerie image stirs debate over what 'real women' look like

(CNN)An apparent image of 48-year-old Cindy Crawford in lingerie is stirring discussion about what "real" women look like -- but not for reasons you might expect.

The practice of photo retouching in fashion publications renders most models completely free of blemishes or imperfections to the point of being unrealistic. But this photo of Crawford baring her sun-kissed torso is drawing praise for showing her in a realistic light.

The image of murky origins spread through social media on Friday after British ITV News anchor Charlene White shared it on Twitter, attributing it to Marie Claire magazine. The American version of Marie Claire, a joint venture between Hearst Magazines and French-based Marie Claire Album, called the image real, honest and gorgeous, but denied any connection to the photo.

Cornell Students Erupt Over Healthcare Fee

Students at vaunted Cornell University are plenty smart enough to know they should not have to pay a penalty for not buying the school's health insurance if they already have coverage, but that's exactly what a new policy at the Ivy League school requires.

The $350 "health fee" for opting out of the school’s insurance plan was announced in a memo school President David Skorton posted on Cornell’s website last week, according to higher education blog The College Fix. But it is just setting in with the student body, and many attending the Ithaca, N.Y., school are not pleased. Under the Affordable Care Act, students must have insurance, but making those already covered pay an extra fee to skip the school's plan is not sitting well.

“Effective next academic year, 2015-16, we will be introducing a student health fee for those not enrolled in the Cornell Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP),” read the memo.

Bill Would Allow Concealed Weapons Across State Lines

Gun owners would be allowed to carry concealed weapons around the country under new legislation introduced in the Senate.

The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would allow gun owners who have a concealed carry permit in their home state to bring their firearms in any other state with concealed-carry laws.

"This operates more or less like a driver’s license,” Sen. John Cornyn (Texas), the second-ranking Republican in the upper chamber, told The Hill. "So, for example, if you have a driver’s license in Texas, you can drive in New York, in Utah and other places, subject to the laws of those states."

Cornyn, a Texas Republican, said this would “eliminate some of the ‘gotcha moments,’ where people inadvertently cross state lines” with guns they are legally allowed to carry in their home state.

The National Rifle Association endorsed the bill Thursday, calling it a “much-needed solution to a real problem for gun owners.”

“The current patchwork of state and local laws is confusing for even the most conscientious and well-informed concealed carry permit holders. This confusion often leads to law-abiding gun owners running afoul of the law when they exercise their right to self-protection while traveling or temporarily living away from home,” said Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action.

“Our fundamental right to self-defense does not stop at a state's borders. Law abiding citizens should be able to exercise this right while traveling across state lines,” Cox added.

A Navy SEAL Just Dropped HUGE News Exposing Brian Williams In Another Lie

Lyin’ Brian strikes again. Man, can you believe anything he reported on? As I said before, stick a fork in him, he’s done. Time to slink off and retire. He lied and told tall tales for years and it finally caught up with him. It’s a pity he wasn’t called on his lies as they happened… it would have saved a lot of ink and hot air. Brian, didn’t your mamma teach you it’s not nice to lie about SEALs or the military in general? Williams is only a legend in his own fact-warped mind. But he’s probably even foggy on that fact.

Since 2011, Brian Williams has claimed that he’s been embedded with SEAL Team 6 multiple times and that one of them gave him a piece of the downed chopper from the famous Osama Bin Laden raid.

On May 2, 2011, Williams told Letterman, “We have some idea which of our special operations teams carried this out. It happens to be a team I flew into Baghdad with, on the condition that I would never speak of what I saw on the aircraft, what aircraft we were on, what we were carrying, or who we were after.”

In January 2013, Williams told Letterman, “About six weeks after the Bin Laden raid, I got a white envelope and in it was a thank-you note, unsigned,” Williams told Letterman in January 2013. “And in it was a piece of the fuselage of the blown-up Black Hawk in that courtyard. Sent to me by one of my friends.”

SEAL Brandon Webb is calling this story “completely preposterous.” HotAir’s Ed Morrissey adds that it’s “not just unlikely, it’s almost certainly untrue as told”:

Uh Oh, Looks Like WBOC Lost Dish Customers Already

Ocean City Emergency Services Monitoring Storm & Coordinating Town Response Efforts with Partnering Agencies

(February 16, 2015) — Ocean City Emergency Services is preparing for winter storm Octavia to impact the region on Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon. The National Weather Service Office in Wakefield, Virginia has forecast accumulating snow and frigid temperatures. At a minimum, Ocean City residents can expect to see four to eight inches of snow, with higher totals possible.
Low temperatures are forecast to be near or below zero degrees. Gusty winds will further complicate the extreme cold and wind chills will be well below zero. Emergency Management officials are asking residents to make preparations now to stay off the roads during the height of the storm tonight and tomorrow morning. In addition, the combination of snow and wind may cause power outages in the area, so residents are encouraged to be prepared for potential outages.
In addition to staying off the roads when snow is falling, residents should take the following actions:
  • Listen to Ocean City Emergency Services Radio 99.5 WPSB or 100.3 WWOP for updated storm information and preparedness.
  • Keep devices charged so you will have a way follow weather forecasts and local emergency information.
  • Be cautious shoveling snow to avoid overexertion. Take frequent breaks and keep hydrated.
  • If you must travel, make sure to have a car chargers, kitty litter or sand for traction, and extra drinks and snacks in case you get stuck in traffic.
  • Let friends or family know of your travel route and expected arrival times.
  • Make sure pets are not kept outside without shelter in cold and snowy weather and be aware that salt and other ice melting materials may hurt animal’s paws.
  • Dress in layers, taking care to keep your hands covered.
  • Know who to contact in the case of a power outage.
Ocean City Emergency Services will be activating the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) tonight to monitor and coordinate response efforts through the storm event. The primary purpose of this activation will be to focus on the agency’s response to the storm and cold weather events. The Ocean City EOC will be working closely with neighboring EOC’s, Maryland Emergency Management Agency and the State Emergency Operations Center to monitor and coordinate additional support and resources if needed.

House GOP: We're Done Bailing Out The Senate

Frustrated House Republicans are through negotiating with themselves.

Majority Whip Steve Scalise joined Senate Republicans for a private lunch on Wednesday to deliver a friendly but blunt message: House Republicans aren’t working on a “Plan B” to fund the Department of Homeland Security and won’t consider another bill until the Senate acts.

After four years of curtailing their agenda to the whims of Sen. Harry Reid and watching a Democratic-controlled Senate bury hundreds of House-passed bills, they’ve had enough.

“Frankly, they were a do-nothing majority, and now they’re trying to be a do-nothing minority,” Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., said in an interview with reporters.

House Republicans concede that the DHS funding package they passed in early January won't survive the Senate intact.

The legislation, while fully funding Homeland Security, would reverse President Obama’s executive order to legalize and grant work permits to 4.1 million illegal immigrants. Senate Democrats are sticking with Obama on immigration policy; even those who claim to oppose the president’s executive action on separation-of-powers grounds have voted to sustain their party’s filibuster of the House bill. Democrats are obstructing Senate Republicans from even bringing the House package to the floor for debate.
