“LET’S GET REAL: If you think kneeling respectfully to protest injustice is more egregious than cops gunning down 12-year-old #TamirRice for holding a toy or murdering #PhilandoCastile in his car with his young daughter, then you have no moral compass. NONE.” – Peter Daou
I love that quote because it’s like saying, “LET’S GET REAL: If you think urinating respectfully on Ted Kennedy’s grave to protest injustice is more egregious than an illegal immigrant murdering Kate Steinle, then you have no moral compass. NONE.”
A reasonable person might ask, “What does urinating on Ted Kennedy’s grave or kneeling when it’s time to respect the flag have to do with what’s being protested?”
There is an answer to that question.
You see, there were a lot of ways Colin Kaepernick could have protested. He chose protesting the flag because he knew that doing something so incendiary would be extremely polarizing and would get a lot of attention, good and bad. Other NFL players saw what he was doing and copied him, not because they really care about the issue, but because they wanted attention for themselves.
However, it turned out that the protests were so polarizing that there were consequences. The protesting players cost the league enormous amounts of money and teams decided they didn’t want to hire Colin Kaepernick because bringing him onboard would lead to more protests, which would cost them more money.

White Flight Returns, This Time From the Suburbs
White residents are either moving back downtown -- or to farther-out exurbs.
Remember white flight? A few generations ago, millions of white Americans left major cities for the suburbs. Their departures were aided, in part, by the growth of the highway system. But they were also motivated by race, as schools and neighborhoods started to desegregate. Now that more minorities are moving into the suburbs themselves -- a majority of minority residents of major metropolitan areas now live in suburbs, according to the Brookings Institution -- white flight is happening all over again.
That’s the conclusion of a new study by Samuel Kye, an Indiana University sociologist. As more minorities have entered the middle class and established themselves in healthy suburban neighborhoods, Kye has noticed an exodus of white residents. Examining 28,000 suburban Census tracts in the nation’s 150 largest metro areas, he found that more than 3,000 of them experienced white flight, losing at least 20 percent of their white populations between 2000 and 2010. In fact, the average loss of white residents was actually twice that high.
Kye discovered that white flight was particularly pronounced in areas with fewer high school dropouts, strong home values, median income levels and large numbers of professionals. He suggests this is because low-income whites don’t have the means to leave neighborhoods seeing influxes of minority residents; affluent whites, on the other hand, have the resources to vote with their feet.

Short-Term Renters Score Supreme Court Victory in Texas
A Bexar County homeowner did not violate a neighborhood association's restrictions on property use when he rented out his home to short-term visitors, the Texas Supreme Court ruled Friday.
The court's ruling comes as city leaders in San Antonio weigh how to regulate short-term rentals made through vacation rental services like Airbnb, HomeAway and VRBO and as the city of Austin engages in a legal fight over its ordinance governing short-term rental use.
Kenneth Tarr bought a single-family home in the Timberwood Park subdivision north of Stone Oak in 2012. Two years later, Tarr began renting out the home to short-term guests through sites like VRBO when his employer transferred him to Houston.
The Timberwood Park Owners Association objected to Tarr's use of his home, arguing that Tarr had violated deed restrictions limiting property use to "residential purposes" and "single family residence" by allowing multiple guests to rent his home for commercial purposes -- a view backed by a Bexar County district judge in 2015 and the Texas Fourth Court of Appeals in 2016.

London-to-Langley Spy Ring; The Roots Of Obamagate Become Clearer
A recent article by George Neumayr in The American Spectator provides an excellent forensic dig into the earliest stages of the US Intelligence Community's surveillance of people in Trump's orbit - and makes clear something that many pointing to a politicized "witch hunt" have long suspected; the Obama DOJ/FBI began looking into "Trumpworld" and the Russians long before the official timeline would suggest.
Moreover, the operation was conducted in close coordination with foreign counterparts, primarily the United Kingdom and Australia, but primarily the former.
All of this raises plenty of questions, but one conclusion about this epic fiasco requires no spying: the fingerprints of the British are all over it. -American Spectator
Here is George Neumayer explaining, how the "roots of Obamagate become clearer" originally published in The American Spectator.
* * *
Even before the first Republican primary, a London-to-Langley spy ring had begun to form against Donald Trump. British spies sent to CIA director John Brennan in late 2015 alleged intelligence on contacts between Trumpworld and the Russians, according to the Guardian.
Here’s the crucial paragraph in the story:
GCHQ first became aware in late 2015 of suspicious “interactions” between figures connected to Trump and known or suspected Russian agents, a source close to UK intelligence said. This intelligence was passed to the US as part of a routine exchange of information, they added.

Since China Banned Most Foreign Waste, U.S. Recyclables Are Being Dumped in Landfills
Oregon is serious about recycling. Its residents are accustomed to dutifully separating milk cartons, yogurt containers, cereal boxes and kombucha bottles from their trash to divert them from the landfill. But this year, because of a far-reaching rule change in China, some of the recyclables are ending up in the local dump anyway.
In recent months, in fact, thousands of tons of material left curbside for recycling in dozens of American cities and towns — including several in Oregon — have gone to landfills.
In the past, the municipalities would have shipped much of their used paper, plastics and other scrap materials to China for processing. But as part of a broad antipollution campaign, China announced last summer that it no longer wanted to import “foreign garbage.” Since Jan. 1 it has banned imports of various types of plastic and paper, and tightened standards for materials it does accept.

Nolte: How Donald Trump Killed Off the 1960s
You get to a certain age and you are fairly certain you have seen it all. For example, I have already witnessed a man walk on the moon, a president resign, America lose a war, the space shuttle explode, the Soviet Union collapse, a president impeached, a tied presidential race, the Twin Towers fall, and a billionaire real estate magnate elected president without a lick of political or military experience. But who would have thought we would live to see the day a Donald Trump could kill off the 1960s?
That is exactly what has happened over the last ten days — Trump killed off the 1960s. Not the worst of it. The social horrors birthed in the ’60s; the fallout that never ends with drug abuse, the welfare state, and loveless sex will always be with us. You can never put evil back in the bottle.
The good things that came out of the ’60s — Trump killed almost all of that.
What have we learned over the last ten days?
Oh, only that the Obama administration launched a counter-intelligence operation against a rival presidential campaign complete with spies, wiretaps, unprecedented unmasking, media leaks, and FISA warrants based on lies.

Trump’s Air Campaign Prompting Taliban to Shut Down Heroin Labs
U.S. airstrikes targeting drug labs in Afghanistan reportedly drove a Taliban commander in Helmand, the most opium-producing region in the world and one of the group’s major strongholds, to move heroin factories away from urban areas into the mountains to avoid detection.
Mullah Manan, the Taliban shadow governor in Helmand, indicated to the Guardian on Monday that “any Taliban who permitted” the presence of drug and heroin “facilities” in public urban areas “would also be punished” for placing local residents at risk of getting bombed by the U.S. military, the newspaper reports.
The U.S. military maintains that no civilian casualties have resulted from the anti-opium campaign, the Guardian notes, adding that the American air campaign may have targeted non-Taliban locals involved in the illicit drug-processing business.

Grassley: Fusion GPS Testimony "Extremely Misleading, If Not An Outright Lie"
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has accused Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson of giving "extremely misleading" testimony that may have been an "outright lie" regarding his post-election work conducting opposition research on the Trump matter.
Of note, when Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) asked Simpson if he was still being paid for work related to the dossier, Simpson refused to answer.
“So you didn’t do any work on the Trump matter after the election date; that was the end of your work?” Schiff asked.
Simpson responded, saying: “I had no client after the election.”
where we do have actual evidence of misleading testimony in Committee interviews, we should treat it seriously. For example, when the Committee staff interviewed Glenn Simpson in August of 2017, Majority staff asked him: “So you didn’t do any work on the Trump matter after the election date, that was the end of your work?” Mr. Simpson answered: “I had no client after the election.”
As we now know, that was extremely misleading, if not an outright lie. -Sen. Chuck Grassley

Facebook Allows Islamic State to Keep ‘Multiple Direct Connections’ to U.S. Supporters
Facebook has allowed the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) to establish a growing virtual presence in North America, used to radicalize, recruit, support, as well as potentially plan and direct terrorist attacks, an analysis by the Counter Extremism Project (CEP) found.
In a report released last week — Spiders of the Caliphate: Mapping the Islamic State’s Global Support Network on Facebook — CEP noted:
"Our analysis of online IS communities globally, regionally, and nationally suggests that IS’s online networks, in particular on Facebook, are growing and can be utilized to plan and direct terror attacks as well as mobilize foreign fighters for multiple areas of insurgency..."

Williams: Capitalism vs. Socialism
Several recent polls, plus the popularity of Sen. Bernie Sanders, demonstrate that young people prefer socialism to free market capitalism. That, I believe, is a result of their ignorance and indoctrination during their school years, from kindergarten through college. For the most part, neither they nor many of their teachers and professors know what free market capitalism is.
Free market capitalism, wherein there is peaceful voluntary exchange, is morally superior to any other economic system. Why? Let's start with my initial premise. All of us own ourselves. I am my private property, and you are yours. Murder, rape, theft and the initiation of violence are immoral because they violate self-ownership. Similarly, the forcible use of one person to serve the purposes of another person, for any reason, is immoral because it violates self-ownership.
Tragically, two-thirds to three-quarters of the federal budget can be described as Congress taking the rightful earnings of one American to give to another American — using one American to serve another.

Comptroller Franchot Announces 6-Month Extension of Sales Tax Deadline for Ellicott City Businesses
Agency will also work with affected businesses in Catonsville, Oella
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (May 29, 2018) – To assist Ellicott City-area businesses affected by this weekend's destructive storm and extensive flooding, Comptroller Peter Franchot today announced a six-month extension for Howard County business tax returns due and has established a special flood assistance email address.
"During this time of terrible loss, this is one thing we can do to ease the burden on business owners who are just beginning to assess the damage and consider next steps," said Comptroller Franchot. "Each time I've visited Ellicott City, I'm struck by the spirit of the business community, its charming storefronts and its importance to our state's economy. My staff stands ready to help these wonderful merchants, who have shown such courage and resilience these past two years."
The extension includes Sales & Use Tax, Withholding Tax and Admissions & Amusement Tax. Taxpayers who file and pay by the extended due date will receive a waiver of interest and penalties. The Sales and Use Tax vendor discount will apply as long as the returns are filed and the taxes are remitted by December 31, 2018.
The Comptroller's Office also has issued a temporary waiver of International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) requirements for those providing emergency supplies and support to the areas impacted by the recent storms and flooding.
The agency has set up a special flood assistance email address –floodsupport@comp.state.md.us – to more quickly assist local businesses. For businesses in Catonsville and Oella affected by storm damage or flooding, owners should call the Comptroller's Ombudsman Karen Scheerer or her assistant Sergio Hernandez at 410-260-4020 or emailombudsman@comp.state.md.us.

Supreme Court Denies Planned Parenthood Challenge
An Arkansas law that requires abortionists to have hospital admissions privileges will move forward after the Supreme Court declined to take up the case.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court declined to hear Planned Parenthood of Arkansas & Eastern Oklahoma v. Jegley, a case seeking to block health regulations on abortion clinics. The Arkansas law requires medical abortion providers to have hospital admitting agreements in order to operate, a regulation that Planned Parenthood claimed would shutter two of its three clinics. The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a lower court ruling that would have prevented the law from going into effect because the district court judge "abused its discretion" in granting the preliminary injunction.

Russian Lobbyist Admits Personal Relationship with Hillary Clinton
In recently released testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, a key participant at the June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with President Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. said that he “knows” Hillary Clinton and has a personal relationship with her that dates back to the late-1990s.
Besides describing a direct connection to Clinton, Russian-born Washington lobbyist Rinat Akhmetshin also testified that he “knew some people who worked on” Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.
Akhmetshin was one of the participants at the June 9, 2016 Trump Tower meeting that has been the subject of much news media coverage related to unsubstantiated and collapsing claims of collusion with Russia.

More than Two Dozen Mortars Fired from Gaza into Israel
The Times of Israel reports: More than two dozen mortar shells were fired at southern Israel in at least three separate barrages Tuesday morning as sirens blared throughout the area, the army said, amid heightened tensions along the Gaza border.
There were no reports of injuries or significant material damage, local government officials said. The shellings appeared to be the largest attack from the Gaza Strip since the 2014 war, known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge.

VA GOP Congressman Will Not Seek Re-election
Rep. Tom Garrett (R-VA-5) announced on Monday that he will not seek re-election to a second term in Congress because he is an alcoholic.
The announcement came in a two-minute video released by his campaign and first published at the Washington Post, that featured an emotional Garrett explaining why he will not seek re-election.
“The recent attacks on my family and myself are a series of half-truths and whole lies. They’re driven more by Republicans than by Democrats,” Garrett said in the video.
“There’s one area that I haven’t been honest,” he continued.
“I am a good man and I am an alcoholic. This is the hardest statement that I have ever publicly made, by far. It’s also the truth. With this in mind, not for fear of losing, or for lack of love for our great nation, today I am announcing that I will not seek re-election,” he concluded.

J-1 students begin seeping in to bolster resort staffing
With Memorial Day Weekend kicking off another summer in Ocean City, the annual influx of thousands of J-1 student visa workers required to bolster resort-staffing needs is once again underway.
Melanie Pursel, Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce executive director, said approximately 4,000 foreign students will travel from abroad to work at the beach this summer, with the resort focused on sending everyone home safely once the season ends.
“Public safety is the big message this year,” she said. “We are working with sponsoring organizations to put a heavy emphasis on bike and pedestrian safety.”
To that end, Pursel said last week Ocean City launched a new program to install free bike lights at the City Hall gazebo each Wednesday from 10 a.m. until noon. The final event takes place on until Jun 27.

Teachers Union-Backed Bills Vetoed by Maryland Governor
Gov. Larry Hogan vetoed three education bills Thursday, calling them "a crude attempt" to dilute accountability in Maryland public schools.
Two of the bills were backed by the Maryland State Education Association, the state's largest teachers' union and a frequent target of Hogan's ire.
The legislation would have changed the composition of the Maryland Board of Education to include two teachers and a parent, made it possible for more school supervisors to join the union and made it harder to fire hundreds of political appointees at the state Department of Education.
Hogan's veto of the bills is final because it is the last year of the four-year term and the next General Assembly does not have authority to override him.
The Republican governor said the bills follow "an unfortunate litany of attempts" by state lawmakers to reshape education policy. Hogan used his four-page veto letter to criticize lawmakers for not passing bills he pushed to create an "investigator general" to look into school systems, and to criticize other legislation he vetoed in the past. The Democratic-dominated General Assembly overrode those vetoes.
"It is shocking to me, as well as the citizens of Maryland, the lengths the General Assembly will go to weaken accountability that will hurt the performance of our school children," Hogan wrote.

Alert Dad Catches Biased Homework: Class Had to Write Pro-Gun Control Letter
I’ll say it again: We need to do the little things, like speaking out and not being afraid to express our political opinions. This method works incrementally toward thwarting the Left’s surreptitious and overt attempts to indoctrinate the Right, and control all political narratives.
Of course, for adults, forced indoctrination often comes in the form of leftist governments using employment as a method of political extortion. Attend the “training” or risk discipline — or even loss of your job. But what’s worse is when the Left uses government schools to brainwash our kids.
This is why it’s crucial we pay very close attention to what leftist educators are teaching our children.
An item in the June 2018 issue of the NRA publication “America’s 1st Freedom” cited information from “Blue Lives Matter”: William Lee, a law enforcement officer from Georgia, was paying attention recently after he asked his son what homework he had to do that evening..

Todd Starnes: Jesus Ban! Valedictorian Releases Graduation Speech Banned by School
Sam Blackledge was told just 10 minutes before graduation that he would not be permitted to deliver his valedictory address because it was too religious.
“They said they didn’t want to make it a religious ceremony,” Sam said on the “Todd Starnes Radio Show.” “They told me that if I took out Christ I could say everything else.”
Sam, who had been preparing for months to deliver his speech, was devastated.
“I never felt that feeling before,” he said. “It was terrible. I felt like I wanted to cry. I had basically — for months I knew I wanted to talk about Christ in my graduation speech. For that to be taken away…”
The school district has refused to comment on the matter. It invited Sam and his parents to a meeting this week, but when it told school leaders it would be accompanied by legal counsel, the meeting was canceled.
“School officials should remember that students retain their constitutional rights to freedom of expression from the schoolhouse gates, all the way through the graduation ceremony,” First Liberty Institute attorney Jeremy Dys told me.
The nationally renowned law firm is representing Sam and they are considering taking legal action.
“These school officials ruined the only high school graduation Sam will ever know,” Dys told me. “How many more graduations have to be ruined before school officials will learn that the First Amendment protects student remarks at graduation?”
In the meantime, we have acquired a copy of the speech the school deemed inappropriate for the graduation ceremony. I hope you take a moment to read his beautiful remarks.

Coastal Highway Median Fence Project Wrapping Up Thursday
OCEAN CITY — State Highway Administration (SHA) crews are putting the wraps on the Coastal Highway median fence and repaving project and are expected to be finished Thursday evening, a day earlier than previously promised.
Last Month, SHA officials promised the Mayor and Council the ongoing median fence project and associated repaving would be completed by the time-honored “Friday of Memorial Day weekend” and it appears the agency and its private contractors will make good on that promise. After months of lane closures, orange barrels and traffic headaches, SHA officials said on Thursday crews are expected to complete the project tonight.
“Our work crews will finish the fencing project by this evening,” said SHA District Community Liaison Tanesha Hankerson on Thursday. “The completed work includes paving from 26th Street to 62nd Street on Coastal Highway, the installation of 40-foot light poles from Convention Center Drive to Route 90 as well as the installation of the median fence that also goes from Convention Center Drive to Route 90. Landscaping around the fence has been installed as well.”

106-year-old woman says key to longevity is staying single
Single life is the key to living longer, one U.K. woman is claiming.
Madeline Dye, 106, of Heeley, in South Yorkshire, England, said her old age was credited to her independence and avoiding relationships, Yahoo News reported.
Dye was born in 1912 and worked as a bookbinder until she retired. However, her niece said she believed her longevity was due to “avoiding the stresses” that often come with marriage and relationships, according to Yahoo News. Dye said she has never had a boyfriend.
Dye’s niece, Diana Heaton, told the Sheffield Star her aunt did not live in a nursing home until she was 103 years old, and only after a bad fall. She said she would cook for herself when she lived on her own, and even put up her own curtains. Heaton added that her aunt still “walks freely without a stick and is very independent.”
“She does still dress herself and goes into the common room and chats with people. She has a great sense of humor still, she has never lost it,” Heaton said.

Grants Available to Launch, Expand Charter Schools in Maryland
Application Deadline is July 9
BALTIMORE (May 29, 2018) – The Maryland State Department of Education is accepting applications for the new Charter School Program Grants.
Maryland is providing grants of up to $900,000 over three years to eligible applicants interested in opening a new charter school in the State. The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. on Monday, July 9.
“I believe that every child in Maryland deserves access to a world-class education regardless of what neighborhood they happen to grow up in," said Governor Larry Hogan. “Organizations can use this critical grant funding to help open innovative schools throughout our State. Public charter schools offer educational choices for families and give additional opportunities for our students."
Grants are available to prepare for operation of a charter school, replicate an existing successful charter school, or to expand an existing high-quality charter school. The grant funding stems from a five-year, $17.2 million federal grant that Maryland received last year through the Expanding Opportunity through Quality Charter Schools Grants to State Entities Program.
Grants can be used for:
- Preparing teachers, school leaders, and specialized instructional support personnel, including through paying the costs associated with providing professional development, hiring and compensating personnel during the planning period.
- Acquiring supplies, training, equipment (including technology), and educational materials.
- Carrying out necessary repairs to ensure that a new school building complies with applicable statutes and regulations, and minor facilities repairs (excluding construction).
- Providing one-time, startup costs associated with providing transportation to students to and from the charter school.
- Carrying out community engagement activities which may include paying the cost of student and staff recruitment.
- Providing for other appropriate, non-sustained costs related to the opening and preparation to open, replicate or expand a charter school.
To be eligible, organizations developing a charter school must:
- Be approved by their local board of education, or
- Have submitted a complete application to the local board, or
- Be an existing charter school seeking expansion, or
- Be an existing charter school seeking to replicate, or
- Be a new charter school in the first two years of operation in need of additional start-up funds.
The exact size of the grant will vary according to the size and needs of the charter school, proposed timeline, and other factors.
Further information and the application form can be found here: http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/programs/Pages/Charter-Schools/CSPGrant.aspx
Flag Status Alert: Maryland Flag is at Half-Staff
This is to advise that Governor Larry Hogan ordered the Maryland State Flag be lowered to half-staff effective immediately and returned to full-staff at sunset on the day of interment (date unknown). This action is in honor of Sgt. Eddison Hermond of the Maryland National Guard, who died during his heroic rescue effort during the devastating flood in Ellicott City, Maryland.

Media turn a blind eye to violent mobs on Chicago streets
"Wilding" is the term for mobs of violent young people taking over upscale neighborhoods and wreaking havoc, looting, mugging, and attacking innocent people just for the fun of it. A "good" neighborhood is no guarantee of safety anymore in Chicago. The breakdown of civil order, in other words, is well underway in the Windy City. Bit by bit, civilization is slipping away in Chicago.
If you want to know how bad things have gotten there, the major media outlets are no help. The last thing they want is for people to stay away from The Mag Mile – the stretch of Michigan Avenue just north of the Chicago River – full of glittering shopping, towering condo buildings and hotels, and the iconic Water Tower that is Chicago's rival to Fifth Avenue around Trump Tower. You have to go to Second City Cop and CWB Chicago, two grassroots websites that are not afraid of alienating big advertisers or of a phone call from City Hall.
The arrival of 90-plus-degree weather over the Memorial Day weekend unleashed the urban youth. Today, CWB Chicago lists the "highlights" of emergency radio traffic, and it is a horrifying compilation of chaos unleashed. For example, an hour and half or so of Saturday night:
8:22PM – "Mayhem," says the downtown police dispatcher, taking a few brief seconds to summarize what she and Chicago cops are dealing with.
8:26PM – Lakeview: Officers call for backup. Fifteen to 20 people are beating up a boy who tried to prevent them from stealing a bike at the Lane Tech High School Memorial Day carnival. Story here.
8:39PM – 70 or 80 teens coming off the Chicago Red Line. "Tell Water Tower to close their doors; otherwise, they gotta let 'em in."
8:42PM – Fights behind the historic Water Tower. Crowd: 200 people, per dispatcher.

Sheriff, county at odds over spending in fiscal 19 budget
Mason a no-show during presentation, evaluation
As evidenced during the Sheriffs Office budget presentation last month by Chief Deputy Doug Dods and comments made Tuesday by County Administrator Harold Higgins tensions between Sheriff Reggie Mason and the commissioners are at an all-time high.
The sheriff is an elected state official, and this is a budget process, Higgins said during the county commissioners budget evaluation session. We can ask for transactions and details on underlying expenditures, Higgins said. Weve not had the best relationship with the sheriff, and were using our ability to go into detail and question.
Mason is retiring at the end of this term, on Jan. 1, 2019. His replacement, however, will be de facto elected during the June 26 primary, as only Republican candidates have filed for office. The new sheriff will have to abide by the budget Dods said he and two other deputies developed.
The office asked for five new deputies, a request that the commissioners trimmed to two deputies and one school resource officer. The department also requested new vehicles, option packages for those vehicles to outfit them to serve as law enforcement cruisers, uniforms and equipment for those new deputies.

Publishers Notes: What Sheriff in their right mind would not show up for their own budget? A Sheriff on his way out, that's who. A Sheriff with an ax to grind, that's who. A Sheriff who supports candidates who have absolutely NO leadership experience, that's who. A Sheriff who supports candidates that have never handled a budget, that's who.
Council Members aren't stupid. They're seeing right through the crap the Sheriff is leaving behind and fortunately for the residents of Worcester County, they're not stupid either. Mike McDermott is the only candidate qualified to be Sheriff. Yes, I know, anyone can put their name in the hat to run for Sheriff but the only one qualified is McDermott.

Trump Retires Peace at Any Price Doctrine
No doubt to the chagrin of many progressives and their Leftmedia allies, “peace at any price” is no longer the operative concept at the White House.
“Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting,” Trump wrote in a letter to Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, released last Thursday. “Therefore, please let this letter serve to represent that the Singapore summit, for the good of both parties, but to the detriment of the world, will not take place.”
After that, Trump made it clear that certain realities remain immutable. “You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used,” he added.
The rest of the letter was quite conciliatory. Trump wrote he was still looking forward to meeting Kim, and thanked him for the release of the hostages, a move he characterized as a “beautiful gesture” that was “very much appreciated.” He also left the door open for Kim to change his mind, calling this “missed opportunity” a “truly sad moment in history.”
By contrast, Democrats couldn’t contain their happiness at having another opportunity to bash Trump.

Quest for Affordable Housing Drives People Away From the Coasts
The high cost of housing seemed to sap Americans’ taste for coastal cities last year as cities in Texas and Arizona gained more population than New York City or Los Angeles for the first time in a decade, according to census population estimates released today.
“What started as a promising decade for big cities is starting to crumble a little bit for them,” said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, in an email. “The Great Recession put the brakes on dispersal to small metro areas, suburbs and the Sun Belt; but those trends are beginning to resume again.”
San Antonio’s population grew by 24,200 between 2016 and 2017, the largest gain among cities, with Phoenix not far behind at 24,000.
It was the first time since 2007 that New York City did not lead the pack in population growth. That year, New Orleans added almost 39,000 residents as people started going back home after Hurricane Katrina.
The last time a Texas city had the largest population surge was in 2006, when Houston — a major destination for Katrina evacuees — added about 43,000 people.

Mentally ‘Disabled’ College Students on the Rise
The number of college students labeled with depression, anxiety, and other psychological problems is increasing, leading colleges and universities to provider a greater number of special accommodations for them.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, as many as 25 percent of students enrolled in elite colleges are now classified as depressed, anxious, attention-impaired, and other labels that, under federal law, entitle them to special learning accommodations. Some students are labeled with more than one disability.
A simple note from a doctor allows a student to be classified as “disabled” and requires a school to provide the accommodations that correspond to his or her “disability.” An accommodation can be additional time to take an exam, seating preference in classrooms, permission to bring an animal to school for comfort, or other methods considered to optimize learning.

Journalist Who Fled Russia Is Fatally Shot In His Kiev Apartment
Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko was shot and killed on Tuesday in the Ukrainian capital. Kiev police told news outlets he had apparently been targeted for his work.
The Kyiv Post reports that Babchenko was shot in the back: "His wife was in the bathroom when she heard the gunshots and walked in to find her husband wounded on the floor. She called the police. The journalist died on the way to hospital."
Babchenko, 41, had been a prominent war correspondent in Russia, but had fled the country in February 2017 out of fear for his safety. He moved to Kiev in the fall, where hosted a program on a Crimean Tatar television network, the Associated Press reports.

After 'Roseanne,' conservatives ask why Joy Reid is still at NBC
Conservatives on social media reacted to ABC's cancellation of "Roseanne" on Tuesday by questioning why liberal commentator Joy Reid is still employed by NBC, even after some anti-gay comments surfaced on her old personal blog.
The right-leaning Reagan Batallion blog tweeted, "Reminder: @JoyAnnReid still has a job at @MSNBC."
"ABC wrong to cancel Roseanne after she apologized for her comment — why the double standard from Joy Reid?" conservative journalist Jack Posobiec wrote on Twitter.
Online provocateur Mike Cernovich sarcastically asked, "Did Joy Reid find those hackers yet?," a reference to Reid's excuse that web hackers were responsible for the comments on her blog.

Walmart Wines are Coming...
Walmart announced that sometime in 3rd Q 2018 it will begin offering customers a new discount item; Walmart's own brand of wine.
The world's largest retail chain is rumored to be teaming up with Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery of California to produce the spirits at an affordable price in the $2 to $5 range.
Wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to put a bottle of the Walmart brand into their shopping carts, but 'There is a market for inexpensive wine,' said Kathy Micken,
professor of marketing at University of Arkansas, Bentonville, 'However, branding will be very important.'
Customer surveys were conducted to determine the most attractive name for the Walmart wine brands and varieties. The top surveyed names in order of popularity were:
10. Chateau Traileur Parc
9. White Trashfindel
8. Big Red Gulp
7. World Championship Riesling
6. NASCARbernet
5. Chef Boyardeaux
4. Peanut Noir
3. I Can't Believe it's not Vinegar
2. Grape Expectations
1. Nasti Spumante
The beauty of Walmart wine is that it can be served with either white meat (Possum) or red meat (Squirrel).
PS. Don't bother writing comments to tell me that this is a hoax. I know possum is not white meat.
