Washington Post Editorial Board: Pour More Money Into Infrastructure To Prevent Next Train Tragedy

You might be aware of Liberals blaming a supposed lack of infrastructure spending for the crash of the AMTRAK train in Philly (say, whatever happened to the $800 billion Stimulus, as well as all the smaller stimulus packages during the first few years of Obama’s reign?), as well as attempting to blame Republicans in multiple ways (many easy examples at Twitchy, includinghere, here, and here). We even know the actual cause. The Washington Post knows the actual cause. Heck, even the Washington Post Editorial Board knows the cause, and they still drive to the corner of Disgraceful Road and Bat Guano Insane Lane

Prevent the next train tragedy
The Philadelphia train crash is a reminder of the need to invest more in U.S. infrastructure. (WT note: that subhead is from the WP front page)

IT’S NOT yet clear why Amtrak Northeast Regional Train 188 derailed Tuesday night, killing seven and wounding more than 200. The National Transportation Safety Board said Wednesday afternoon that the train was traveling more than 100 mph in a 50 mph zone in North Philadelphia, where the tracks take a sharp turn.

So, everyone knows that the train was going double the speed limit, including the WPEB, but the WPEB is unsure what caused the crash? Would this be considered Amtrak Trutherism? It’s certainly a way for the WPEB to push Talking Points

At first glance, in other words, this would appear to be a story of human failure. But no matter what the investigation yields, there almost certainly will be lessons about the United States’ negligent stewardship of its roads, rails, bridges and tunnels.

Parolee Escapes, Gets Shot by Female Homeowner

This homeowner was smart enough to grab her firearm when she got a call that there was an escaped parolee. The escaped parolee was not lucky that he picked her fence to jump over.

Redding resident Jennifer Doolittle received the call, retrieved her handgun, and stepped outside to get her dogs and bring them in the house. As she did this, Carmelo climbed over her fence and allegedly “advanced on her and again acted as if he was reaching for a handgun.”

So Doolittle fired a number of rounds, striking Carmelo and stopping the advance.

Carmelo is back in police custody. Score one for good guys (or girls) with guns!

Hackers drain bank accounts via Starbucks app

Thieves are stealing money from people's credit cards, bank and PayPal accounts -- by first tapping into their Starbucks mobile app.

Starbucks on Wednesday acknowledged that criminals have been breaking into individual customer rewards accounts.

The Starbucks app lets you pay at checkout with your phone. It can also reload Starbucks gift cards by automatically drawing funds from your bank account, credit card or PayPal.

That's how criminals are siphoning money away from victims. They break into a victim's Starbucks account online, add a new gift card, transfer funds over -- and repeat the process every time the original card reloads.

Police Officers Threaten to Turn Their Backs on Obama at the D.C. Memorial Service

Obama is expected to speak at the National Peace Officers Memorial Service in Washington, D.C. this week, despite his many anti-police statements over the past year. And because of those statements, law enforcement officers are reportedly threatening to turn their backs on him at the service.

Law enforcement officers at Washington, D.C.’s annual Police Week tell The Daily Caller that the anti-police climate is taking its toll on the men and women in uniform and that morale is low in departments across the country.

One source told TheDC Monday night that officers have stepped back from engaging in proactive policing, because they often see the same violent criminals they arrest immediately released on to the streets.

President of the Fraternal Order of Police Chuck Canterbury told TheDC that he believes that a shortage of cops is the reason. “For the last six or eight years, proactive law enforcement has come to a stop because of shortage of personnel.”

Additionally, cops say that the fear of legal and political backlash, similar to what was seen in Ferguson, New York City and Baltimore, is hurting morale. One source at Police Week who also does part-time security work for private companies was astounded at how young some of the violent individuals were during the Baltimore riots.

… A law enforcement source told TheDC that some attendees are threatening to turn their backs on President Barack Obama at the annual National Peace Officers Memorial Service at the Capitol, where Obama is scheduled to deliver remarks. Obama made comments in the past that many in the police community found offensive.

17 arrested in northern Illinois during ICE operation targeting criminals

ROCKFORD, Ill. — As part of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) ongoing efforts to focus agency resources on the arrest and removal of criminal aliens, 17 convicted criminal aliens were arrested during an operation carried out this week in northern Illinois.

The three-day operation, which concluded Tuesday, was conducted by ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) as part of the agency’s commitment to prioritize the removal of individuals previously convicted of a crime.

All 17 Mexican males are convicted criminals whose convictions include: aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated drunken driving, domestic battery resulting on bodily harm, battery, carrying a concealed weapon, and drug-related crimes. Two of those arrested have outstanding deportation orders against them; two others were previously deported and illegally re-entered the United States, which is a felony.

Chairman Obama: Private Schools Lead To “Less Opportunity For Our Kids”

In a shocking video courtesy of Pat Dollard, President Obama, sounding more like Chairman Obama or Comrade Obama, denounces private schools as a path that leads to “less opportunity for our kids.”
“And what’s happened in our economy is that those who are doing better and better — more skilled, more educated, luckier, having greater advantages — are withdrawing from sort of the commons — kids start going to private schools; kids start working out at private clubs instead of the public parks. An anti-government ideology then disinvests from those common goods and those things that draw us together. And that, in part, contributes to the fact that there’s less opportunity for our kids, all of our kids.”

It’s not altogether unsurprising that Obama would say this; to those who foster big government, it is inconceivable that the private sector can accomplish with better results what government cannot. Government, to Marxists like Obama, is the center of the universe around which we all orbit- the hub of human existence.

What is shocking is that we, as Americans, are currently in a position where an outright Marxist is sitting in the highest office in the land and was even elected to two terms.

New Timeline Shows the Transfer of Half Of U.S. Uranium Output To Russia As Hillary Clinton’s Foundation Bags $145 Million

As Hillary Clinton mounts her 2016 presidential bid, she is conspicuously dodging tough questions about her pocketing of cash that appears to have been earned from selling influence. In a new report, Breitbart offers a damning timeline of Hillary’s shady dealings with regards to a $145 million profit from the transfer of Uranium to Russia during her tenure as Secretary of State.

A newly released GAI timeline depicts the sequence of events leading up to then-Sec. of State Hillary Clinton’s approval of the transfer of half of U.S. Uranium output (20% of all U.S. Uranium) to the Russian government in 2010.

Clinton’s State Department was one of eight agencies to review the deal, but Hillary Clinton was the only agency head whose family foundation bagged $145 million in donations, reports the New York Times and Clinton Cash.

Indeed, the head of the Russian government’s uranium company, Ian Telfer, made a secret $2.35 million foreign donation to the Clinton Foundation, as was confirmed by the New York Times.

Bill Clinton also received a $500,000 speaking fee for a speech in Moscow paid for by a Kremlin-connected bank, reports the New Yorker.

“I’ve gotta pay our bills,” explained Bill Clinton.

Please see the graphic below for a timeline of Hillary’s seemingly unethical quid-pro-quo.

GREAT News: Teacher Who Forced Grade Schoolers to Send Cards to Cop Killer Was Fired

Here is some good news. The New Jersey teacher who forced her third graders to send get well cards to cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal has finally been fired.

In April news broke that this “teacher,” one Marilyn Zuniga, had her 8-year-old students send the get well cards to the convicted cop killer.

Now Zuniga has been fired for her stunt by the Orange, New Jersey public schools.

Marylin Zuniga, a first-year teacher who drew widespread condemnation for assigning her young charges the task of writing to Mumia Abu-Jamal, was canned at the meeting of the Orange Board of Education, the Star-Ledger of Newark reported.

…The vote to fire Zuniga occurred after several hours of public speakers, many of whom praised Zuniga for teaching her students to have compassion for a man who killed a police officer. Abu-Jamal killed Faulkner during a routine traffic stop of Abu-Jamal’s brother. At trial, several witnesses reported seeing Abu-Jamal kill Faulkner, and two witnesses said Abu-Jamal confessed to the killing, saying, “I shot the motherfu**er, and I hope the motherfu**er dies.”

Although the abrupt vote left meeting attendees unsure of what had happened, Orange Superintendent Ronald Lee confirmed that Zuniga was fired in an email to the Star-Ledger.

This is the right move. Any teacher who would teach 8-year-olds to celebrate a murderer deserves to be fired.

Dear Chris Rock: White Kids Get Shot Too… More, Actually.

Celebrities say lots of stupid things, like Chris Rock claiming that police shootings “never happens to white kids.” Let Steven Crowder illustrate some of the ways that he’s wrong…

From 1999-2011, 2,151 whites died by police-fire compared to 1,130 blacks. If you’re able to count, that’s like 1,000 more white people than black people in a little more than one decade alone.

Chris, you probably don’t know about Gilbert Collar, a white, unarmed 18-year-old man who was killed by a black cop. You probably also haven’t heard of Dillon Taylor, a white, unarmed 20-year-old shot and killed by a black policeman outside a 7-Eleven in Utah. Namely because it didn’t make the news and it didn’t cause completely unjustified riots. (Ones which disproportionately victimized black people and business owners, by the way.) When will you speak out for them?

Of course, fact don’t matter if it advances a liberal agenda. This is just another example.

Baltimore’s problems not rooted in racist police

Attorney General Loretta Lynch has announced a Justice Department investigation to determine whether the Baltimore Police Department’s practices are unconstitutional and violate civil rights; in short, whether or not the police force there is racist. It will come as no surprise if the investigation concludes that it is, because accusing the department of racism diverts attention from the city’s real problem: Baltimore, a laboratory for liberal policies, is a failed city that has shortchanged the poor for decades.

Baltimore has received over $1.8 billion in stimulus money from the Obama administration, including $467.1 million to invest in education and $26.5 million for crime prevention. Still, parts of the city remain mired in poverty and despair. There are 16,000 vacant buildings in Baltimore and an unknown number of “vacant” fathers. Between 2000 and 2010, Baltimore lost 5 percent of its population. The liberal solution of raising taxes hasn’t worked. Many of those who could escape the city have.

“Every single major urban center in America is run by Democrats — more specifically, liberal progressives, black or white,” writes former Congressman Allen West.

It is undeniable that it is liberal policies that have failed — from anti-poverty programs, to dysfunctional schools from which they refuse to let the poor escape because of the political donations they receive from teachers’ unions.

He told the operator whatever she could do would help.

"I can't do anything. I can't go anywhere. I can't get out of my damn chair," Blackmon said in his 911 call.

See No Evil: What We Chose to Ignore in the April Jobs Report

We live in an age where bad economic news is not only unwelcome, but it is routinely overlooked or excused. On the other hand, good news is spotted and trumpeted even when it doesn’t exist. An ideal illustration of this dangerous tendency towards collective selectivity came last week when the markets and the media somehow turned an awful employment report into an ideal data set that confirmed all optimism and contained nothing but good news for investors. In truth, it was anything but.

The stakes were high with this year’s April non-farm payroll report. It was the first major employment report of the Second Quarter and it was hoped that it would show an economy bouncing back from a sluggish winter. But there was cause for concern. The March report had been an unmitigated disaster. Only 126,000 jobs were created when 247,000 were expected. Then, two lesser April employment reports had been released, the ADP private payroll data and the Challenger jobs cuts report that came in far below expectations (Challenger showed the biggest month over month increase in layoffs in three years). Even more harrowing was the recently released .2% annualized GDP in the First Quarter, a dismal April trade deficit, and the worst back to back monthly productivity reports in almost a decade. We needed good news, and we needed it bad.
The April report’s headline was all most people needed to see before breathing a collective sigh of relief. 223,000 jobs were created during the month, which was a full 3,000 jobs more than the 220,000 that had been predicted by the consensus of economists. In addition, the unemployment rate held at a very low 5.4% (matching the consensus), the lowest number since the Market Crash of 2008. The steady rate, and the modest beat (of a modest expectation) were received like a strand of garlic to ward away evil spirits. Icing the cake was the understanding that the report was not so good that it would accelerate the Federal Reserve’s timetable to raise interest rates. As a result, it was termed a “Goldilocks” report, which many consider to be the best of all possible outcomes. But even a casual look beneath the surface should have thoroughly deflated the euphoria.

Government Censorship on the Rise

Cities and counties across the U.S. are banning advertising about religion, politics, abortion, environmental causes — any topic that risks offending people. For example, Lackawanna County, Pa., is barring bus ads that promote atheism and claims it will reject ads that promote religion, too. New York, Philadelphia and Chicago are cracking down on political ads in mass transit.

Government bureaucrats don’t want the “distraction” of dealing with controversial ads. Too bad they don’t realize — or don’t care — that freedom requires hearing distasteful ideas. Half a century ago, as totalitarian governments gripped Eastern Europe and muzzled freedom fighters, George Orwell warned, “If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they don’t want to hear.”

On April 29, New York City’s transit authority voted to exclude political ads from buses, trains and platforms. Thomas F. Prendergast, transit chairman, defends it, saying controversial ads “have been a distraction” for the transit system. New York’s new rule was triggered by a federal court decision a week earlier ordering the transit authority to display a provocative ad smearing Islam as a religion that advocates killing Jews. No matter how offensive the ad is, the judge ruled, transit officials can’t pick and choose. To get around the ruling, transit officials banned all political ads.

Philadelphia is also stifling free speech. On March 30, Pamela Geller and her controversial anti-jihadist organization, the American Freedom Defense Initiative, won a federal court battle against transit officials there. The judge ordered transit officials to display Geller’s ad, which said, “Islamic Jew-hatred: It’s in the Quran.” To avoid complying, Philadelphia took the coward’s way out, just like New York, and banned all political ads.

Governor Larry Hogan: Changing The Status Quo

Why is North Korea executing high-level officials with anti-aircraft guns?

North Korea has reportedly executed a top official, Defense Minister Hyon Yong Chol, in a most North Korean manner: by shooting him to pieces with an anti-aircraft gun in front of a crowd of hundreds of other officials.

That's according to South Korea's intelligence service (NIS), which has a history of exaggerating reports about North Korea that make the country look bad. Indeed, while South Korean lawmakers at first described the NIS as categorically stating that Hyon had definitely been executed, the NIS later told the press that they were certain Hyon had been purged, and that they believed with confidence that he had been executed, but were still working to verify the latter.

In any case, there's reason to believe this could have actually happened — and that it could speak volumes about North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's hold on power.

First, the official story, according to South Korean intelligence: Kim Jong Un allegedly deemed his defense minister, Hyon Yong Chol, disloyal for dozing off during high-level events and for second-guessing Kim's orders. (You can bet the truth is probably closer to second-guessing, or outright insubordination, than it is to unauthorized napping.) On April 30, Hyon was stood before an anti-aircraft gun — which is essentially a mobile platform of four machine guns large and powerful enough to shoot down an airplane — and executed.

Governor Larry Hogan: Here Are The Facts

In 3rd trial, dad guilty of hurling girl to death off cliff

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In the nearly 15 years since Sarah Key-Marer got the chilling news that her 4-year-old daughter had plunged to her death from a sea cliff, the mother has waited for the girl's father to take responsibility.

He never did, and after two previous juries deadlocked, jurors Wednesday convicted Cameron Brown of first-degree murder in the death of Lauren Sarene Key.

A shocked Key-Marer breathed heavily and began crying as the verdict was read in Los Angeles Superior Court.

"Lauren was our gift from God, the best thing that ever happened to us," Key-Marer said outside court. "We just learned to live with the pain."

High-ranking gang member had list of juror names

The defendant who obtained a jury pool list, triggering a mistrial for six suspects in the killing of a Waynesboro reserve police captain, is a high-ranking gang member who recruited while behind bars awaiting trial, according to court records.

Travis Leon Bell, also known as Kweli Uhuru, possessed the jury pool list for “at least one night,” or 15 hours, while being held in the Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange County and “had some conversations about names,” according to court transcripts obtained Wednesday by The Daily Progress and The News Virginian.

A day earlier in Charlottesville, the leak of the jury pool list prompted federal Judge Glen E. Conrad to declare a mistrial for Bell and five others accused in the killing of Kevin Wayne Quick, 45. The case now either won’t be tried in Charlottesville until next year or will be moved to a new venue, the judge has said.

Bell was known as “Big Homie,” a term of respect for higher-ranking Bloods members. He and Gert Arthur Wright III, also known as Halisi Uhuru, whom authorities described as the highest-ranking gang member of the six suspects, both recruited while in jail, according to court records.

Siblings Daniel Lamont Mathis, Shantai Monique Shelton and Mersadies Lachelle Shelton, all of Albemarle County, and Bell, of Front Royal, are accused of murder, racketeering and robbery. Wright and Anthony Darnell Stokes, both of Manassas, are charged with racketeering and obstruction of justice.

All six defendants are members of the 99 Goon Syndikate, an affiliate of the Bloods, according to prosecutors.

FBI agent Scott Cullins raised concerns about the safety of the 134 people on the jury pool list during a May 7 meeting in Conrad’s chambers with the judge and lawyers on both sides, according to court transcripts. The agent said each of the defendants is tied to the United Blood Nation, which he described as having a history of retribution and intimidation.

Governor Larry Hogan Addresses Increased Education Funding And State Pension Shortfalls

Administration Takes Steps To Ensure Fiscal Responsibility And Appropriate Funding To Pensions Of State Employees And Teachers

ANNAPOLIS, MD –
Governor Larry Hogan today reaffirmed the state’s commitment to K-12 education funding, and announced plans to ensure that the pensions of Maryland state employees and teachers are not put at risk following actions by the General Assembly earlier this year.

“I was elected to deliver fiscal responsibility to Annapolis, which means putting an end to the damaging, budgetary gimmicks that put the state’s long term financial stability at risk,” said Governor Hogan. “But I also want to set the record straight on the investments my administration has made in K-12 education, including a $109 million increase in funding over last year.”

The Hogan administration will provide more in K-12 education funding than any governor in the history of Maryland, including:
$6.1 billion in K-12 total investments
$318 million in school construction
$109 million in additional K-12 funding over FY2015
$68 million in discretionary education funding (GCEI)

“We have taken steps to grow education funding, but the state still faces $18.7 billion in unfunded pension liabilities, following $625 million in cuts to pension contributions in the last few years. To address this situation, I’ve decided not to follow the General Assembly’s recommendation to raid the pension fund,” said Governor Hogan. “Doing so would be shortsighted and irresponsible, and I was elected to end this very type of reckless budgeting and governing.”

Since 2012, the State of Maryland has failed to make $625 million in payments to the state employee pension system. During this most recent legislative session, the General Assembly sought to once again reduce payments and further jeopardize the long-term stability of the system. In order to safeguard pension contributions and deliver the necessary funding this year and next, Governor Hogan has committed to supplemental education funding in the form of GCEI at $68 million in FY2016.

The governor also announced that he would allow the mandated GCEI spending bill to pass into law this year without his signature.

Other items in the FY2016 budget will also be fully funded. These include a range of healthcare-related provisions including adult day care, physician rates for Medicaid services, heroin addiction treatments, health services to pregnant women and a variety of other healthcare-related budget items.

Finally, Governor Hogan will provide $30 million in funding from the State’s Capital Budget for the Prince George’s County Hospital, following the completion in 2015 of a 5-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) relating to the hospital’s operating costs.

County Keeps Municipality Funding Flat In New Budget; Resort’s Tax Differential Formula Denied For Now

SNOW HILL – Despite Ocean City’s campaign for funding to address tax differential, Worcester County officials voted 4-3 this week to fund the municipality at the same level it was funded last year.

During a budget work session Tuesday, the Worcester County Commissioners made a decision to keep funding to all of the municipalities flat in the coming fiscal year. Instead of the $5 million grant Ocean City was seeking, the resort will receive $3,084,956.

“I don’t think you should flat-fund anybody unless you’re going to flat fund everybody,” Commissioner Ted Elder said.

A committee of county staff proposed funding Ocean City with an additional $200,000 in FY 2016, which would have brought the total grant to $3,284,956.

“It was just put out here for conversation,” said Harold Higgins, the county’s chief administrative officer.

The Left's Twisted Concern for Premature Black (Voter) Deaths

“Blacks die sooner than whites. How many votes has this cost Democrats?” So headlined The Washington Post over the weekend. It’s not so much that black lives matter, you see, as black votes matter to Democrat politicians.

Writing in the Post, University of Massachusetts at Amherst Professor Dean Robinson takes a look at the research of Javier Rodriguez, Arline Geronimus, John Bound and Danny Dorling, four university professors who attempt to calculate how different election outcomes might have been if the voting-age blacks who died between 1970 and 2004 had lived and voted (Democrat).

According to Robinson, “Rodriguez and colleagues estimate that excess deaths among blacks totaled 2.7 million between 1970 and 2004, that 1.74 million would have been of voting age, and that 1 million would have voted in the 2004 election. Combining excess mortality with the consequences of felon disenfranchisement, they find that about 1 in 7 blacks (15 percent) did not have the opportunity to vote in 2004 for one of these two reasons.”

While the study authors conclude the 2004 presidential election would not have turned out different, they assert the “[o]utcomes of 7 senate and 11 gubernatorial races could have been reversed.”

Then Robinson lays out the familiar narrative about racial inequality. “Research has shown that blacks are not dying in excess because of differences in genetic endowment or health behavior,” he says. “Instead, health disparities reflect racial and class inequality and an accumulation of stressors, including segregation, discrimination, exposure to pollution and unequal access to health-care resources, to name a few.”

Mayor Calls on Neighborhood Activists to Attend Important Work Session, Monday, May 18, 2015

Publishers Notes: Jim trying to use the citizens to turn on each other to bully the City Council. Let's see if Jim has any friends show up.

Salisbury –
Mayor James Ireton, Jr. today announced that he will forward for Council consideration three initiatives aimed at strengthening the City’s ability to combat blight and preserve neighborhood integrity. The City Council will be presented with the proposals this coming Monday, May 18th, at what the Mayor believes will be the most important Council work session in years for Salisbury neighborhoods.

The Mayor has requested that Council consider an ordinance for amortization of houses which had previously been granted exemption as “4-3” and “4-4” dwellings under the City’s “4 to 2” law; a budget amendment establishing a fund for purchasing derelict properties at tax sale; and a discussion of a proposed Community Development Initiative for combatting blight in Salisbury.

Feds to return $107G they seized from NC business owner, attorneys say

Lyndon McLellan fought the law -- and apparently, he won.

The North Carolina business owner for months has been battling the federal government after IRS agents last fall seized $107,000 from him, under a controversial practice known as civil forfeiture. But his attorneys at the Institute for Justice announced Thursday that the IRS and Department of Justice have moved to dismiss the case and give him back his money.

“What’s wrong is wrong, and what the government did here was wrong,” McLellan said in a statement Thursday. “I just hope that by standing up for what’s right, it means it won’t happen to other people.”

Democrats Immediately Exploit Train Wreck

Regarding the Philadelphia train crash, the blood of the seven dead was not dry on the tracks before Democrats attempted to convert this tragedy into political capital. Congress was deliberating Amtrak funding and, in keeping with Rahm Emmanuel’s maxim to “never let a good crisis go to waste,” Democrats immediately asserted that the crash was related to an “infrastructure failure.”

Obama’s White House mouthpiece Josh Earnest got in on the act, saying, “The president has been a leading advocate … for investing in our infrastructure.” He added, “Unfortunately, we have seen a concerted effort by Republicans for partisan reasons to step in front of those kinds of advancements.”

According to investigators, the train was traveling over 106 mph, or twice the posted track speed.

ABC ‘Newsman’ Gave $50K To Hillary

ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos has given $50,000 to the Clinton Foundation in recent years, charitable contributions that he did not publicly disclose while reporting on the Clintons or their non-profit organization, the On Media blog has learned.

In both 2013 and 2014, Stephanopoulos made a $25,000 donation to the 501 nonprofit founded by former president Bill Clinton, the Foundation's records show. Stephanopoulos never disclosed this information to viewers, even when interviewing author Peter Schweizer last month about his book "Clinton Cash," which alleges that donations to the Foundation may have influenced some of Hillary Clinton's actions as Secretary of State.

In a statement to the On Media blog on Thursday, Stephanopoulos apologized and said that he should have disclosed the donations to ABC News and its viewers.

FISCAL LIBERALS POLITICIZING THE AMTRAK TRAGEDY

“IF ONLY ANOTHER $1.31 BILLION HAD BEEN APPROPRIATED …”

At least seven people are dead in Pennsylvania – and dozens more injured – after an Amtrak passenger train carrying 238 passengers and five crew members derailed in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

Let’s stop for a moment before going any further and acknowledge that, shall we?

Before all the bodies had been pulled out of the wreckage, though, fiscal liberals in the U.S. Congress were already blaming the tragedy on government underfunding of the chronically cash-strapped train system.

They also used the crash as an excuse to try and add $1.31 billion to the $1.14 billion Amtrak is getting in a transportation appropriations bill – and then bitched, moaned and played partisan politics when the effort was defeated.

“It is deeply troubling that my Republican colleagues defeated an amendment to fully fund Amtrak just hours after his tragic rail crash,” liberal U.S. representative Nita Lowey of New York said.

Worcester County eyeing 8-cent tax hike to close ‘16 budget gap

Although nothing has been finalized, some clues began to emerge Tuesday as to how the Worcester County Commissioners intend to close the $22 million gap between revenues and expenditures.

As the commissioners began to evaluate the proposed FY16 budget line by line during their first work session devoted exclusively to that the issue, a clearer picture of their intent began to form.

Chiefly, it appears the county is working with a proposed 8-cent increase in the property tax rate, which will take it from the current rate of 77 cents per $100 of assessed value to 85 cents per $100. On a home assessed at $200,000 the tax hike will mean an extra $160 in taxes, bringing the total to $1,700 from $1,540.

Even with the increase, Worcester is still well behind Somerset and Wicomico’s 2015 respective rates of 91.5 cents and 95.2 cents per $100. The increase will edge Worcester ahead of Queen Anne’s county rates for 2015 of 84.7 cents, which translates to $6 on a $200,000 home.

Black Bike Week: Is A Crackdown Coming?

GRAND STRAND IMPOSES “DE FACTO MARTIAL LAW”

Against the wishes of S.C. governor Nikki Haley, the annual Atlantic Beach Bikefest is set to begin on May 22 … and officials on the Grand Strand are bracing for the worst. In addition to imposing what one critic referred to as “de facto martial law,” officials have also set up a 23-mile “traffic loop” in an effort to prevent “parking lot parties.”

The loop – which wasn’t implemented for this week’s “white biker weekend” – is just one part of the response effort, though.

Grand Strand authorities plan on cracking down on the parties they claim led to last year’s violence via some broadly worded new ordinances.

“Impromptu parties, with or without alcohol, are illegal on both public and private property,” the city of Myrtle Beach, S.C. stated on its bikefest website.

Wait … what? That sounds a lot like overreach to us …

Additionally, “excessive noise, including noise created by loud music, revving engines and spinning tires” is also banned. Individuals who violate either of these ordinances – or the prohibition against consuming alcohol in a parking lot – could face up to thirty days in jail.

O'Malley to Announce Presidential Plans on May 30

Martin O'Malley plans to announce his presidential intentions on May 30 in Baltimore, a move that could present another Democratic challenger to Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The former Maryland governor will hold a conference call with top supporters on Thursday night to discuss his plans for the announcement in his adopted hometown, where he served as mayor, an O'Malley aide said Thursday. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal planning and was not authorized to speak publicly.

O'Malley, who completed his second term as governor earlier this year, has been considering a potential challenge to Clinton, the leading Democratic contender, and made repeated trips to the early voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. He has cast himself as a champion of progressive causes during his time as governor and appealed to liberal voters within the party who are hesitant to support Clinton.

In Stunning U-Turn, NBC Retracts Story That Obama Lied About bin Laden

It would appear someone at NBC News got a rather large tap on the shoulder. In what isa stunning reversal of their confirmation that President Obama lied and lying about the killing of bin Laden,NBC News has updated their original story - that "two intelligence sources tell NBC News that the year before the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden, a 'walk in' asset from Pakistani intelligence told the CIA where the most wanted man in the world was hiding" - to this - "Sources say that while the asset provided information vital to the hunt for bin Laden, he was not the source of his whereabouts." As Slate concludes, while NBC’s story doesn’t use the word correction or retraction, that’s what this appears to be.

Since we discussed the details of the original NBC News 'confirmation' story here...

...the Obama administration has spent the last 24 hours working to discredit the story. Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren said the report from Hersh was “largely a fabrication” with “too many inaccuracies.”

The White House says the Hersh’s investigation is riddled with inaccuracies.

‘Ping Pong Summer’ Returning Part Of Seed Money To OC, Worcester County

OCEAN CITY – The Town of Ocean City will receive a $30,000 return from its $100,000 investment in the “Ping Pong Summer” movie.

Tourism and Marketing Director Donna Abbott presented an update on the film “Ping Pong Summer” during Monday’s Tourism Commission meeting.

In June of 2012, Ocean City was first introduced to the story of “Ping Pong Summer” when Writer/Director Michael Tully and producers pitched the movie concept and sought the public’s help in financing it.

“Ping Pong Summer” is set in the summer of 1985 and centers on a ping pong and hip-hop obsessed teenage boy on a family vacation to Ocean City. Tully wrote the story and directed the film based on his own experiences on summer family vacations in the resort while growing up in Mt. Airy, Md.

MEMORIAL EFFORT UNDERWAY TO REMEMBER THOSE LOST IN THE CRASH OF TROOPER 2

(BALTIMORE, MD) – An effort by law enforcement, fire, and rescue personnel is underway to remember those killed aboard a Maryland State Police helicopter that crashed on one of the darkest nights of the state’s public safety history.

The Trooper 2 Memorial Fund has been initiated to establish a memorial to the crew and one of the patients on-board who died in the 2008 crash. The memorial will be placed at the entrance to the walking trail that leads to the crash location in Walker Mill Park in District Heights, Md. A second marker will be placed at the actual crash site.

On September 27, 2008, Trooper 2 responded from its hangar at Andrews Air Force Base to Waldorf, to assist the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department with the medevac of two car crash victims. Because two victims were being transported, a second medical provider was needed and an emergency medical technician from the fire department joined the State Police helicopter crew for the flight to the trauma center.

Trooper 2 encountered poor weather while en route to the trauma center and attempted to land at Andrews, but crashed while on approach to the airport. Maryland State Police Pilot Stephen Bunker and flight paramedic Trooper First Class Mickey Lippy, Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department EMT Tonya Mallard, and patient Ashley Younger, were killed in the crash. The second patient, Jordan Wells, was critically injured, but survived.

Soon after the crash, a group of concerned supporters began efforts to establish a memorial to those who died. The committee includes University of Maryland Police Chief David Mitchell, who is also a former Superintendent of the Maryland State Police, Major (Ret) Mark Gibbons, former Commander of the Maryland State Police Aviation Command, Major Frank Lioi, current Commander of the Aviation Command, Maryland State Police Captain Bill Dofflemyer, who is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department, Mr. Lou Ramer, a member of the Board of Directors of the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department, and Mr. John Mullican, the memorial artist.

“It is important that we do this because the sacrifice of these public servants must not be forgotten,” Major Frank Lioi said. “This memorial will be an appropriate reminder to all who see it of the dedicated public servants who gave their lives in service to others, as well as the patient who died while in their care. We must honor their memory and their sacrifice, while reminding their families that they will always be remembered.”

The Trooper 2 Memorial Fund has been established through the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department to raise the $45,000 needed to build the memorial and marker. The funds need to be raised by July 1st in order to have the memorial and marker in place by September 27th. Donations are tax deductible. Donations may be sent to:
The Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department
Trooper 2 Memorial Fund
3245 Old Washington Rd.
Waldorf, MD 20602
Donations may also be made on line at: http://www.waldorfvfd.com.

The committee hopes to have the donations raised and the memorial erected in time for a memorial ceremony and dedication event. The ceremony is planned for September 27, 2015, the seventh anniversary of that tragic night.

Nepal rescuers find 3 bodies near crashed US Marine chopper

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Nepalese rescuers on Friday found three bodies near the wreckage of a U.S. Marine helicopter that disappeared earlier this week while on a relief mission in the earthquake-hit Himalayan nation, and officials said it was unlikely there were any survivors from the crash.

“The wreckage of the helicopter was found in pieces and there are no chances of any survivors,” Nepal’s Defense Secretary Iswori Poudyal said. He gave no details about the nationalities of the three victims, only saying their remains were charred.

The helicopter was carrying six Marines and two Nepalese army soldiers.

A separate team sent by the U.S. Marines also said they identified the wreckage as the missing helicopter, the UH-1 “Huey.”

B.B. King, Legendary Blues Guitarist, Dies At 89

It seemed like he'd go on forever ... and B.B. King was working right up until the end. It's what he loved to do: playing music ... and fishing. Even late in life, living with diabetes, he spent about half the year on the road. King died Thursday night at home in Las Vegas. He was 89 years old.

He was born Riley B. King on a plantation in Itta Bena, Miss. He played on street corners before heading to Memphis, Tenn., where he stayed with his cousin, the great country bluesman Bukka White. His career took off thanks to radio — he got a spot on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio show, then landed his own slot on black-run WDIA in Memphis. He needed a handle. At first it was Beale Street Blues Boy. Then Blues Boy King. Finally B.B. King stuck.

You can't mention names without talking about his guitar, Lucille. It was actually more than one. The story goes that the first was a $30 acoustic he was playing at a dance in Arkansas when two men got in a fight, kicked over a stove and started a fire. When King was safe outside, he realized he'd left the guitar inside. He ran back into the burning dance hall to save it. After he learned the fight had been over a woman named Lucille, he decided to name his guitar for her to remind himself never to get into a fight over a woman. And since then, every one of his trademark Gibson ES-355s has been named Lucille.
