Fireboat hits rocks & sinks in Delaware river injuring 3 firefighters – Operator charged: MORE

Wednesday afternoon, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Division of Fish and Wildlife Enforcement announced in a release that the fire boat’s operator, 62-year-old Edward Kalinowski, of Delaware City, was charged with one count of negligence by operating at excessive speed. Kalinowski also sustained a broken ankle in the accident.

Troopers Investigate Fatal Crash on Coastal Highway, Rehoboth

Rehoboth Beach, DE – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is currently investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcyclist.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:40 a.m. this morning as Craig M. Shine, 26 of Nottingham, PA, was operating a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck southbound on Coastal Highway (SR1). The truck was stopped for a red light in the right lane at the intersection with Old Landing Road when a 2004 Kawasaki ZX6 motorcycle, being operated by Kenneth E. Hunt 2nd, 24 of Dover, was traveling south bound in the right lane of Coastal Highway approaching the pickup at a high rate of speed. As the traffic signal changed to green, the Dodge began to proceed south and for unknown reasons, Hunt failed to see the truck, causing the motorcycle to strike the rear of the truck.

Kenneth Hunt, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Craig Shine and two adult male passenger, who were all properly restrained, were uninjured in the collision.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. Coastal Highway southbound at Old Landing Road was closed for approximately three hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

American women, It's now official: the Conservatives on the Supreme Court have decided that your employer now has the right to make your health care decisions for you. Not you. Not your doctor. You, apparently, aren't capable of making that decision for yourselves.

Let it be noted that the Republican Party supports this move to deny you your own health care decisions.

The Next Fire Palace In Salisbury

I'm not exactly sure why the Mayor of Salisbury is so willing to throw away millions of additional dollars on Fire Stations but the fact is, he is.

Station 2 is on the fast track of disappearing and a brand new Fire Station will be built. Here's the deal though. The new Fire Station will cost the taxpayers around $4,000,000.00+ while the old Fire Station 2 can be completely rebuilt to code for less than $2,000,000.00, (HALF) and they can even add on a second floor to the old Station 2. 

Even without the second floor, (GET THIS) the old Station 2 will still have MORE ROOM than the new one. 

There's a lot more information coming to the surface on this project but I'm waiting on confirmation before I expose another BIG story on this project. More to come...

So as a taxpayer, what's your thoughts on paying double and getting less space?

Wicomico County Continues To Lose Its Employment Job Base - Workforce Numbers Diminish for 17th Consecutive Month

The employment woes in Wicomico continue as the US Bureau of Labor Statistics released its May job numbers for our nations States & Counties.  The latest month - May 2014 - workforce jobs numbers reveal that Wicomico lost another 826 workers when compared to May of 2013.  This makes the 17th consecutive month that Wicomico has lost ground in the local employment arena.  April's unemployment rate was revised downward to 7.0% from its previously reported number 7.1%.  Looking at the data also reveals that Wicomico County has reported workforce reductions in 23 of the past 29 months.  The last time Wicomico County reported a positive workforce increase was in December of 2012.

COLORADO DMV OVERWHELMED BY ILLEGAL ALIENS!

The website for Colorado’s Division of Motor Vehicles was briefly shut down late Wednesday, the same day non-citizens were allowed to begin making appointments to obtain driver’s licenses.

Daria Serna, a spokeswoman for the agency, confirmed the brief shutdown on Thursday, saying the website was back online as of 5 a.m. Thursday local time. On Tuesday, the “Schedule an Appointment at a Driver’s License Office” page averaged 70,000 hits per hour, including a high of 107,500 hits hourly, compared to its hourly average of 8,126 hits per hour.

“There is clearly a great deal of interest by the community to obtain these services,” Barbara Brohl, the executive director of the Colorado Department of Revenue, said in a statement to FoxNews.com.

Proposed tax could charge Md. drivers for every mile they drive

ROCKVILLE, Md. - Imagine having a GPS tracker installed in your car that would monitor each mile you drive. Then you would be charged a fee for each of those miles. It is just an idea for now, but it has already got people in Maryland fired up.

It's called the “Vehicle Miles Travelled" tax or VMT tax. The way it would work is a GPS tracker or odometer reading would keep track of a driver's mileage. That number would be reported to the government and then the driver would be charged a fee per mile.

AAA Mid-Atlantic's John Townsend says it is the worst of ideas.

“This would be the third rail of politics – if you touch it, you die – and no politician with half a brain would even fathom this,” he says.

Supporters say it could be good for the environment and help to cut emissions and discourage driving.

But others say the tax would hurt middle and lower income families who may live further away to afford housing.

“People are working two or three jobs just to make a living,” said one resident we spoke with. “And this would be very bad for them.”

PIKESVILLE, MD) – On this Fourth of July weekend, troopers will be looking for distracted, aggressive and impaired drivers as well as dangerous road conditions due to the pending storm.

Each of the 22 state police installations will have additional troopers on patrol conducting traffic enforcement. These initiatives will include DUI saturation patrols, speed enforcement as well as focusing on aggressive and distracted driving. 

Troopers will also be on guard for any flooding or hazardous road conditions caused by the storm. Drivers are reminded strong winds and heavy rains can lead to standing water and cause power outages, leaving traffic lights not functioning properly. 

The Fourth of July is a favorite holiday for many Americans. Families and friends gather to celebrate our country with food, parades, parties, and fireworks. For many people, the celebration includes alcohol, but the holiday quickly goes from festive to fatal when people choose to drive after drinking or drive aggressively.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.

Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well-educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals, or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson,Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.

Remember: freedom is never free!

Target Asks Customers To Leave Firearms At Home

Target is "respectfully" asking its customers to not bring firearms into its stores, even where it is allowed by law.

In a statement posted Wednesday on the retailer's corporate blog, interim CEO John Mulligan said that Target wants a "safe and inviting" atmosphere for its shoppers and employees.

"This is a complicated issue, but it boils down to a simple belief: Bringing firearms to Target creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create," he said.

In many states, carrying unconcealed guns in public is legal.

On July 3, 2014, the Honorable S. James Sarbanes sentenced Kevin J. White, Jr., age 24, of Salisbury, Wicomico County, Maryland, to Life suspend all but thirty-five (35) years imprisonment. The Defendant pleaded guilty to this crime on April 17, 2014. Sentencing was deferred until July 3, 2014, for a mental health evaluation and pre-sentence investigation. After White serves his sentence, he will be supervised for the remainder of his life as a Tier III sexual offender and sexually violent predator.

New School Immunization Requirements for 2014-2015 School Year

Salisbury, Maryland – New school immunization requirements, set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will become effective at the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year. The new requirements outline that students entering Kindergarten or 7th grade will be required to have received the following vaccines:

· Kindergarten: 2 doses of Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine before entering Kindergarten.

· Seventh Grade: 1 dose of Tdap vaccine and 1 dose Meningococcal before entering 7thgrade. These required vaccines should be administered at age 11.

Wicomico County Health officials will host two FREE walk in clinics for students needing to receive either of these vaccines before the start of the new school year.

If you’re a District resident planning to vacation in the Maryland havens of Ocean City or St. Michaels this summer, Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) and some D.C. activists would prefer you choose Rehoboth Beach, Del., or Chincoteague Island, Va., instead.

A week after Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) successfully attached an amendment to a House budget bill that would overturn the city’s marijuana decriminalization law, Gray and the District’s largest voting-rights advocacy group said city residents would be better off vacationing somewhere besides Harris’s district, which includes all of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

“I don’t think we should support someone who doesn’t support us, who doesn’t support democracy, period,” the mayor said Wednesday after a news conference at which he decried Harris’s actions as “hypocrisy at its worst.”

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR ISSUES FINAL SALE NOTICE FOR MARYLAND OFFSHORE ‘WIND ENERGY AREA’

ANNAPOLIS, MD (July 2, 2014) -- Today, the United States Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) issued the Final Sale Notice for Maryland’s offshore Wind Energy Area (WEA) -- the last major regulatory step  before BOEM can auction the lease areas within the WEA.  The auction for the nearly 80,000 acres offshore Maryland will occur on August 19, 2014. 
“To combat climate change, we must develop cleaner, renewable sources of energy -- and today's announcement is a tremendous step forward for the U.S. offshore wind industry,” said Governor O’Malley.  “As we continue our work to drive up renewable energy generation in Maryland by 20 percent by 2022, the O’Malley-Brown Administration is committed to continuing to work with our federal partners to do everything we can to meet this goal and create a stronger, more sustainable future for generations to come.

“Maryland is a leading force for building a clean and sustainable energy future,” said Department of Interior Secretary Sally Jewell.  “Thanks to Governor O’Malley’s leadership and significant stakeholder involvement through BOEM’s Maryland Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Task Force, we have reached another milestone as we strengthen our nation’s foothold in the new energy frontier.”
The Maryland WEA covers approximately 94 square nautical miles of ocean beginning 10 nautical miles (approx. 11.5 miles) off the shores of Ocean City, Maryland.  The area is further subdivided into northern and southern lease areas in order to ensure efficient use of the available area and support competition.  BOEM has solicited input from developers and the public regarding this area, most recently, in December of 2013, through a Proposed Sale Notice.
As noted by Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) Director Abigail Ross Hopper, “Today’s action represents the culmination of years of comprehensive marine spatial planning work with maritime stakeholders, coastal communities, academic institutions, and Maryland businesses.  This collaboration will ensure that offshore wind energy can be developed in harmony with the environment and other users of the oceans.”
 MEA and other Maryland agencies have invested significant resources in atmospheric, ecological, and geophysical surveys of the WEA, making it the most closely studied area of the Outer Continental Shelf under consideration for offshore wind development.  Major surveys of marine mammals and other wildlife in the area are continuing to ensure that offshore wind projects can be developed without impacting the marine environment.

  • On 06/27/2014, at approximately 8:02 pm, Worcester County Sheriff's Office Deputies stopped a vehicle in the area of Golf Course Road and Sunset Avenue, Ocean City, Maryland after observing the operator utilizing a telephone while the vehicle was in motion. Deputies identified the operator as Peter J. Monti, W/M, age 27, of Florida and noted him to be extremely nervous. Deputies detected the odor of suspected marijuana emanating from the passenger compartment of the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle a loaded .380 Colt semi automatic handgun, hashish oil, and drug paraphernalia were located. The handgun was reported stolen in Florida.

    Mr. Monti was charged with possession of the stolen handgun. Mr. Monti was also charged with two counts of marijuana less than 10 grams, and three counts of drug paraphernalia. Mr. Monti was later released on his personal recognizance pending his court appearance.

US COURT: MEXICANS CAN SUE BORDER PATROL AGENT WHO KILLED THEIR ROCK-THROWING SON

TUSCON, Arizona--The US 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Monday that the parents of Sergio Hernandez, a 15 year-old Mexican teenager who was shot and killed by Border Patrol Agent Jesus Mesa on June 7, 2010, could sue Mesa in US civil court for alleged excessive use of force. This was a reversal of the initial judgment made in Mesa’s favor in the lower Western District Court in El Paso, TX.

Jesus Hernandez and Maria Guereca brought a total of eleven claims against the US government, Mesa, and several Border Patrol supervisors, according to the text of the Appeals Court ruling. The first seven claims were brought under the Federal Tort Claims Act, based on “multiple allegations of tortious conduct,” and the next two claims involved allegations that Hernandez’s Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights were violated. The key claim, however, was that Mesa was liable under Bivens v. Six Unknown Named Agents of Federal Bureau of Narcotics through his “use of excessive, deadly force.”

Hillary Clinton: Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby Decision Is ‘Deeply Disturbing’

Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday that the Supreme Court's ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby — allowing some companies to refuse to cover employees for specific birth control methods if they conflict with the business owner's religious beliefs — was "deeply disturbing."

Clinton, a potential Democratic presidential candidate in 2016, said she hopes the court's ruling sparks a "real outcry" across the nation.

"This is a really bad, slippery slope," Clinton said during an appearance at the Aspen Ideas Festival.

Steep Failure Rate On Algebra I Exams In Montgomery Leads To Mass Recalculation

Montgomery County’s failure rate for the June final exam in Algebra 1 was so steep — 82 percent for high school students — that district officials say they decided to add 15 percentage points to all test grades, recalculate scores and reprint thousands of report cards.

Report cards across the system were mailed Friday, three days late, and many parents said they received them Saturday.

The last-minute scramble to adjust for the poor results came as perhaps the most vivid example so far of fallout from widespread exam failures in the high-performing school system.

The Hobby Lobby Decision

Let me be clear:

No woman should have her health care decisions made by her boss. Today's Hobby Lobby decision is wrong, and it's a setback for women's health.

We all remember Wendy Davis's historic filibuster last year. For eleven hours she stood up and fought so that women could make their own health care decisions.

Her efforts fell short that night, but they formed the foundation of a movement that will carry her to the Texas Governor's Office this November.

Today is also a campaign finance reporting deadline for Wendy's campaign - a barometer used to gauge support for change in Texas.

Liberals Call For Burning Hobby Lobby After Supreme Court Decision

On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that companies with religious objections may opt out of covering contraceptives for women, the Associated Press reported. The news did not sit well with pro-abortion liberals who decried the ruling. Some,Twitchy said, were so angry they called for burning down Hobby Lobby in violent, profane tweets.

"[L]iterally burn hobby lobby (sic) to the ground," one pro-abortion liberal screamed on Twitter.

Supreme Court Sides With Hobby Lobby On Contraception Mandate

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby that employers with religious objections can opt out of providing contraception coverage under Obamacare.

The ruling deals directly with only a small provision of Obamacare and will not take down the entire law but it amounts to a huge black eye for Obamacare and its backers. The justices have given Obamacare opponents their most significant political victory against the health care law, reinforcing their argument that the law and President Barack Obama are encroaching on Americans’ freedoms.

“Under the standard that [the Religious Freedom Restoration Act] prescribes, the HHS contraceptive mandate is unlawful,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the opinion, which was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Anthony Kennedy.

Can Bob Culver run the table on Rick Pollitt?

Billiards fans will know that this asks if Mr. Culver will be elected as the next Wicomico County Executive this fall in what is one of the most important contests, another being that for circuit court judge . Consider his "hypothetical" victory based upon the vote that he and Mr. Pollitt received in his respective party primary:

Pollitt (Democrat) - 3,361

Culver (Republican) - 3,841

Now, if that were the general election vote, it would put Mr. Culver in that big office on the third floor of the Government Office Building. Although the primary vote differential is encouraging, let’s consider Pollitt's past performance at the polls.

In 2006, when he was the only significant candidate, Pollitt received 4,789 primary votes, 77% of the Democrat total, then trounced by more than 3,000 votes Ronald Alessi, who was the only serious Republican candidate and won its primary with only 2,308 votes, 39% of those cast. That election is almost meaningless, but not so the one in 2010, when he won the Democrat primary with 3,734 votes, or 69% of those cast. His opponent in the general election, Joe Ollinger, had received more votes – 4,229 – In the Republican primary, but in the general election Pollitt managed to turn the table, winning by less than 1,000 votes (15,022 to 14,110), due in large part to Mr. Ollinger's lackluster campaign.

If this year is a repeat of 2010, when Pollitt played the comeback kid role after the primary, the result will be similar. But there are factors that may prevent that from happening. As noted, in 2010 Pollitt had the benefit of an opponent who either could not or would not conduct an aggressive campaign of the kind necessary to win. Bob Culver cannot repeat that episode if he expects to win. Whether he follows in Ollinger's wake remains to be seen.

Then, there's numerology. In each successive primary Mr. Pollitt has received fewer votes than in the preceding one. And his margin of victory in the general election has decreased -- another sure sign of less affection among the County residents who vote. His narrow win in 2010 shows that a respectable Republican can come close to defeating Pollitt without trying hard to do so. It’s a shame that Joe Ollinger did not conduct a broader campaign rather than simply presenting himself as a successful conservative businessman who wanted to be the one who appointed the school board.

And of even greater significance, in the primaries in both 2006 and 2007 the total Democrat vote for the County Exec candidates exceeded the Republican numbers. Not so this year, when there were no other candidates that Culver and Pollitt.

Now is the time for Mr. Culver to let voters know who he is and how he will be different than Pollitt. And it’s time for those who want him to displace Pollitt to support Bob’s campaign with a contribution. This year the outcome in November could turn on campaign finances and spending.

$76 million net system to prevent suicides off the Golden Gate Bridge

San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge moved a big step closer to getting an oft-debated suicide barrier after bridge officials on Friday approved a $76 million funding package for a net system that would prevent people from jumping to their deaths.

The bridge district's board of directors voted unanimously in favor of the funding for a steel suicide net, which includes $20 million in bridge toll revenue. Federal money will provide the bulk of the remaining funding, though the state is also pledging $7 million.

A tearful Dan Barks, of Napa, who lost his son, Donovan, to suicide on the bridge in 2008, said after the vote that he was almost speechless.

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Jade Kenny has won the Miss Maryland pageant and will compete in September for the crown of Miss America.

Pageant business manager Courtney Thomas says the 23-year-old winner represented Allegany County in the competition Saturday night in Hagerstown.

Ebony Sherrill representing Annapolis was runner-up.

Man plead for his life while suffocating to death in jail restraint chair

CLAY COUNTY, FL — Jailers taunted a young man as he begged for his life, strapped to a restraint chair and suffocating on pepper spray. The death of the teen was officially ruled a homicide, although the state later concluded that no one should be punished.

Daniel Linsinbigler, 19, was being detained at the Clay County Jail on non-violent misdemeanor charges resulting from some sort of psychotic break.

His incarceration did not go smoothly. After one day, he was placed in solitary confinement, supposedly for his own safety. He was placed on suicide watch.

An inmate in an adjacent cell described to First Coast News how jailers tormented Linsinbigler:

According to inmate Linus Farr, who was housed in the cell next door to Daniel Linsinbigler, the teen’s problems began the night before when he asked for a pencil to write with.

Linsinbigler had been in jail for more than a week and, according to Farr, wanted to make a written request to see his attorney. But while deputies apparently gave him the form, they would not give him anything to write with. He was on suicide watch. No pencils allowed.

According to Farr, the guards didn’t just deny Linsinbigler. They mocked him.

“They were all making fun of him,” Farr told investigators with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. “They were calling him a Jesus freak, a God freak…[teasing him] about his religious beliefs: ‘God can’t’ help you now. God can’t give you a pencil.’”

The teasing, Farr added, caused Linsinbigler to grow “more and more agitated.”

The following morning, on March 12th, 2013 — the tenth day of his incarceration — Linsinbigler was allegedly being disruptive, yelling and kicking the door of his cell. Jailers confronted him for “making too much noise” and forcibly removed him from his cell.
