10 Sounds We Hate Most

Scientists have discovered why unpleasant sounds trigger a negative response. When we hear unpleasant sounds such as a fork scraping a plate or nails against a chalkboard, the auditory cortex of the brain and an area of the brain called the amygdala interact to produce a negative response. The auditory cortex processes sound, while the amygdala is responsible for processing emotions such as fear, anger, and pleasure. When we hear an unpleasant sound, the amygdala heightens our perception of the sound. This heightened perception is deemed distressing and memories are formed associating the sound with unpleasantness.

Teens are anxious and depressed after three hours a day on social media

A study published Wednesday in the journal JAMA Psychiatry suggests that teenagers who spend more than three hours a day on social media are more likely to develop mental health problems including depression, anxiety, aggression, and antisocial behavior.

The study: Nearly 6,600 12- to 15-year-old Americans self-reported how much time they spent per day on social media, as well as whether they had any mental health problems. The researchers found that three hours of social media correlated with higher rates of mental health issues, even after adjusting for a history of such problems.

How teens absorb social media: The effects of social-media consumption on teens manifest in two main ways, according to the study’s authors: internally (depression and anxiety, for example) and externally (aggressive behavior or antisocial behavior). The latter were essentially nonexistent among teens who reported that they didn’t use social media.

But this is old news ... right?

Report: California Agent Changes Story on Loretta Lynch Seeking Probe into Planned Parenthood Journalists

The California Department of Justice special agent who testified Tuesday that Obama-era Attorney General Loretta Lynch wrote to former state Attorney General Kamala Harris to request an investigation into the Planned Parenthood video journalists changed his story, reported LifeSiteNews.

The pro-life media outlet reported that Special Agent Brian Cardwell changed his story Thursday regarding the letter that sparked the criminal investigation of David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt of the Center for Medical Progress (CMP). The undercover journalists produced a series of videos exposing the fetal tissue trafficking practices of Planned Parenthood and its partners in the biomedical procurement industry.

LifeSiteNews reported on the preliminary hearing in the criminal case against the journalists:

OLDER IPHONES REPORTED ‘BREAKING’ AFTER APPLE UNVEILS IPHONE 11

Right after Apple announced the iPhone 11, numerous owners of older iPhones began to report device malfunctions reminiscent of a 2017 debacle in which the company admitted slowing the performance of older phones – ‘officially’ in order to extend their battery life.

At the time, Apple said in a statement that it had “never – and wound never – do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product.”

According to USA Today, however, the coincidences are piling up.

Police: Thousands of fetal remains found in home of former South Bend abortion doctor

Officials say 2,246 fetal remains were found in the home of a doctor who used to perform abortions in South Bend until his license was suspended in 2015.

Dr. Ulrich Klopfer, who has a home in Will County, Illinois, passed away on September 3.

Klopfer used to practice out of Women's Pavilion in South Bend. The state of Indiana suspended Klopfer's medical license in 2015 for failing to exercise reasonable care and violating several notice and documentation requirements. He was accused of failing to report an abortion preformed on a 13-year-old.

China to lift punitive tariffs on U.S. soybeans and pork before new round of talks to curb a bruising trade war

China will exempt some agricultural products from additional tariffs on U.S. goods, including soybeans and pork, in the latest sign of easing tensions before a new rounds of talks aimed at curbing a bruising trade war.

The United States and China have both made conciliatory gestures, with China renewing purchases of U.S. farm goods and U.S. President Donald Trump delaying a tariff increase on certain Chinese goods.

A state news agency said Friday that China will now lift punitive tariffs imposed on U.S. soybeans and pork.

The Xinhua News Agency, citing unidentified official sources, said soybeans, pork and some other farm goods will be exempt from tariff hikes.

PIERS MORGAN: Biden’s going to be Democrat nominee – which means Trump will be facing off against a rambling, weird, gaffe-prone, senile-looking 78-year-old.

Donald Trump won the Democratic debate last night.

He wasn’t actually there, obviously.

But he’ll have been sitting in his private quarters at the White House chuckling at what he was watching.

In fact, he was enjoying it so much he didn’t even bother tweeting his usual real-time derision. Perhaps he felt the candidates were damaging themselves enough without needing any help from him?

For the cold, harsh reality is that right now, none of these Democrat contenders look anywhere near like beating Trump in 2020.

Illinois Supreme Court selects chief justice married to indicted Chicago Alderman at center of huge federal probe into political corruption

There is jaw-dropping indifference to the appearance of corruption in Springfield, Illinois. It's hard to figure out what was on the minds of the justices of the Illinois Supreme Court when they chose Anne Burke to be chief justice for the next three years. Illinois voters elect their supreme court justices to ten-year terms on partisan ballots. Once elected, justices face a yes-or-no vote every ten years, so maybe they feel so secure in their state's deep blue status that they can flaunt the appearance of corruption with no consequences. But for anyone concerned about the legitimacy the court enjoys in the public mind, it is an odd choice of leadership. Illinois Policy explains why:
As Chicago's longest serving alderman faces prison time, his spouse will become the state's most powerful judge.

The state's high court justices on Sept. 10 elected Justice Anne Burke to chief justice of the Illinois Supreme Court, succeeding former Chief Justice Lloyd A. Karmeier. (snip)

Burke's rise to chief justice comes while her husband, 14th Ward Ald. Ed Burke, faces a 14-count indictment on federal corruption charges. In January, federal prosecutors accused the alderman of attempting to extort the owners of a Burger King franchise in his ward by withholding a remodeling permit in order to pressure them to hire his private law firm to handle their property tax

SILENAS: Democrats Are Talking About Climate Change — But It Seems Like They Just Want To Raise Taxes

Democratic presidential candidates took the stage once again Thursday night, this time in Houston, Texas.

Observers noted that not a single question on the economy was asked, though climate change remained a subject of discussion. Sen. Elizabeth Warren promised to cut CO2 emissions by 70 percent. Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke said he’d cut emissions by 100 percent.

The continued focus on climate change on the heels of CNN’s seven-hour “climate crisis” marathon is a bit of a shame. The truth is we’ve known for some time where most Democrats stand on the issue. Months ago Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez released her “Green New Deal.” Then Sen. Bernie Sanders announced a similar Green New Deal. Not to be outdone, Sen. Kamala Harris announced her own $10 trillion version.

Goodwin: Trump the real winner as Biden again proves he’s not cut out to be nominee

And the winner is … Donald Trump.

The Democrats’ third presidential debate was a long-winded, platitude-filled disaster where no single candidate could claim a clear victory. Instead, the seven men and three women took turns displaying why they are all probably unelectable.

Start with Joe Biden’s incoherence. The nominal front-runner, the former vice president had a 40-year reputation for never shutting up. Now he can’t manage to finish a sentence without interrupting himself.

Nearly all his efforts to make a point were swamped by a sudden change of direction mid-sentence, and then another change a few words later as a random thought popped into his head and out his mouth. None of his rivals needed to interrupt him — he did it to himself.

STUDIES FIND NO EVIDENCE THAT ASSAULT WEAPON BANS REDUCE HOMICIDE RATES

Mass shootings are unconscionable acts of violence and are the most acutely disturbing form of gun violence. In the wake of such tragedies, many gun control advocates lambast gun rights supporters for allowing “weapons of war” onto the streets of America and not supporting “responsible gun reform.”

The measures put forth are usually either a ban and/or mandatory buyback of “assault weapons,” most of which are more accurately known as semi-automatic rifles. (“Assault weapon” is a vague term that varies state to state and can include common pistols and shotguns depending out other attachable accessories.)

While these initiatives are “common sense” to advocates, if one takes the time to examine the data and evidence, it becomes abundantly clear that gun control in this form will do little to reduce gun violence.

Kunstler Exposes "Tectonic Rumblings" In America's Political Memory Hole

The memory hole that appeared in America’s zeitgeist around 2016 is expanding like some evil cosmic rot. Things happen and then things unhappen and after a while it’s like they never happened. For instance, little seems to have happened all summer long with the matter known as RussiaGate, the attempt by high US government officials to overthrow the result of the 2016 election by pretending that Russia was trying to interfere in the 2016 election.

Quite a confection of lies and subterfuge. It apparently grew out of an effort at the highest levels of the Obama administration well before 2016 to run so-called intel operations against the perceived enemies of Mr. Obama’s foreign policy. One target was General Michael Flynn, who until 2014 had headed the Defense Intelligence Agency, which is devoted to military intel analysis. General Flynn was known to be unfavorably disposed to Mr. Obama’s deal to pay billions to Iran for a halt in that country’s nuclear weapons program.

After retiring, General Flynn set up his own intel consulting company, which had two clients in Russia: a short-hop airline and a cyber-security firm owned by a holding company in Britain. In late 2015, General Flynn attended a Moscow dinner for Russia Today (RT) where he sat next to Vladimir Putin and gave a speech for which he was paid $45,000. Note: at that point, General Flynn was a private citizen and we were not at war with Russia. It was one of many European nations that Americans were allowed to do business in.

LIKE A ROLLING STONE: Big Liberal Mag Says Joe Should Drop Out Of Race

Joe Biden is no spring chicken. In fact, he’s not even a late-fall chicken.

Biden, at 76, is old, realllllly old. He falls asleep at events, can hardly utter a sentence without misspeaking, and sometimes his eyeball just fills up with blood.

While still the front runner in all the polls, Biden is no longer inevitable. And some prominent backs of the past have begun to bail.

Take Rolling Stone magazine, the cultural icon for decades. They’re now saying no to Joe.

“Why It’s Time for Joe to Go,” says a headline of a piece posted Friday, with a subhead that read: “Democrats need an antiracist nominee to run against a racist like Donald Trump. The third debate confirmed Biden isn’t up to the task.”

Air Force deal to refuel near Trump’s Scottish resort reportedly signed under Obama

The controversial arrangement by the U.S. Air Force to refuel at a Scottish airport near President Trump’s Turnberry golf resort apparently was signed under the Obama administration, according to multiple reports.

The details emerged as the Air Force was called to explain a March stopover in the Scottish resort -- with Democrats on the House Oversight Committee writing to Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan as part of their investigation into alleged conflicts of interest by the president. The twist revealing that the airport deal predates his administration could boost Trump's case.

Politico, which was among the outlets to publish stories this week examining the relationship between the Air Force and the resort, reported that the Air Force crews stayed at Trump’s Scottish resort up to 40 times since 2015.

Feds investigating current and former UAW union bosses for yearslong embezzlement scheme

Current and former top officials of the United Auto Workers union are implicated in a federal investigation into criminal activities involving a yearslong scheme to embezzle members' dues payments.

UAW President Gary Jones and former union President Dennis Williams are two of four unnamed senior union officials found complicit in an embezzlement and money laundering scheme that involved roughly $1 million-worth of illicit transactions, sources told the Detroit News.

"The investigation ... uncovered a multi-year conspiracy involving senior UAW officials embezzling, stealing and unlawfully and willfully abstracting and converting UAW funds to purchase luxury items and accommodations for their own personal benefit," Labor Department Special Agent Andrew Donohue wrote in an affidavit. "The outlay of the funds was not properly approved, was concealed from the view of the UAW members, and used for the personal benefit of the upper echelon of union officials who were elected to represent the members' best interests above their own."

Pete Buttigieg’s unprompted attacks on Mike Pence are all about scoring easy points with the base

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg can't have it both ways. Either he lied a few years ago about having a good working relationship with Vice President and former Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, or he is lying now about his stated dislike for the vice president.

Either way, you should disregard anything the mayor says now about Pence. This entire one-sided “feud” is a cynical ploy meant to whip up enthusiasm among the Democratic base.

On Thursday, during a 2020 Democratic primary debate in Houston, Buttigieg once again took an unprompted shot at his former governor, who is both a devout Christian and pro-traditional marriage. The moment occurred after ABC News’ chief anchor George Stephanopoulos said as he wrapped up the evening, “No president can succeed without resilience. Every president confronts crises, defeats, and mistakes.”

Booker introduces bill requiring gun owners get a federal license

WASHINGTON — Legislation requiring gun owners to receive a federal license every five years was introduced Tuesday by U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, who has made gun safety a major issue during his campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.

“This bill is based on a very simple concept - if you need a license to drive a car, you should need a license to buy and possess a gun,” said Booker, who first proposed mandatory gun licensing in May.

Booker’s bill would require would-be gun owners to pass a firearm safety training course, undergo a criminal background check and provide fingerprints. The license would be valid for five years after which time the applicant must pass another safety course and another background check.

It all started when two clerks working at the front desk of the hotel got a call from one of the rooms.

During the call, the workers reportedly heard two people fighting in the background, prompting the on-duty security guard to call police.

Malkin to Trump: ‘Shut Down’ Federal Reserve Remittance Program for Illegal Aliens

Columnist Michelle Malkin is calling on President Trump to “shut down” a Federal Reserve program that profits off remittances sent to foreign countries by illegal aliens.

During an interview with SiriusXM Patriot’s Breitbart News Daily, Malkin detailed how the Federal Reserve actually aids illegal aliens living in the United States through a federal remittance program, included in her latest book, Open Borders, Inc: Who’s Funding America’s Destruction?

“I was working on a section in Chapter One which is on the caravan cartel called ‘Banking on Illegals’ and I’d reported on this all the way back from the late 1990s on Bank of America and Wells Fargo and private institutions that were profiting,” Malkin said. “And in the middle of that research, I discovered the Federal Reserve, itself, was trying to hone in on this segment of the market with its own program to have a remittance program that is specifically marketed to illegal aliens in America.”

Obama AG Loretta Lynch Requested Investigation of Planned Parenthood Video Journalists

The California Department of Justice agent who was present during the raid on David Daleiden’s home in 2016 testified Tuesday that Obama-era Attorney General Loretta Lynch requested the investigation of the undercover video journalist and his colleague in the wake of their video exposé of Planned Parenthood’s fetal tissue trafficking practices, reported LifeSiteNews.

Special agent Brian Cardwell testified in San Francisco during the preliminary hearing in the criminal case against Daleiden and his colleague, Sandra Merritt, that Lynch sent a letter to former California Attorney General Kamala Harris, now a U.S. senator and a Democrat candidate for president, requesting that the two undercover journalists of Center for Medical Progress (CMP) be investigated.

Harris, who received thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Planned Parenthood, authorized the raid and seizure of Daleiden’s personal property, including his laptop. Subsequently, she initiated the criminal prosecution against both journalists.

Michelle Malkin Takes On Pro-Illegal Immigration Punks In Maryland

Conservative author and powerhouse of a woman Michelle Malkin ventured into one of the worst counties in America on Friday in hopes of shedding light on Montgomery County's unsafe policies that protect illegal immigrants and endanger United States citizens. Malkin, author of Open Borders Inc: Who's Funding America's Destruction, traveled to the Maryland county to face local "leaders" like Marc Elrich who have allowed at least eight alleged rapes at the hands of illegal immigrants to occur in the area in the past two months. As Townhall has covered, the county's legal response to these illegal immigrants has been atrocious. The county board even recently sent a letter blaming conservatives and other Americans concerned with the crime as "neo-Nazis." Malkin was having none of that on Friday.

Malkin joined radio host Larry O'Connor and a host of other patriotic Americans who travelled to The Old Line State today for a protest titled "Community Rally to Protect Our Families and Children."

As reported by the Daily Caller News Foundation, Malkin said before the event that it would be "a rally of local citizens and some national personalities all gather on the steps of the Montgomery County government complex in Rockville, really taking this fight to the heart of this illegal alien sanctuary space."

Dr. Harris Responds to Trump Administration’s Proposed E-Cigarette Regulations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Andy Harris (MD-01) supports the Trump Administration’s goal of reducing youth vaping and encourages the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to preserve access for adults using flavored e-cigarettes and other nicotine vaping products as a means of smoking cessation.

“I share the Administration’s concerns over the increasing rise of e-cigarette use by our youth population and support efforts to curb this growing epidemic. I am also concerned by the reports of vaping related illnesses and deaths across the country. However, initial reports seem to indicate that the illnesses in question are largely attributable to the illicit use of contaminated marijuana vaping products. Accordingly, with respect to vaping induced illnesses, the focus should remain on the use of unregulated and non-FDA approved THC-containing vaping products, which is exacerbated by the growing number of jurisdictions legalizing marijuana products for recreational use. The Administration should use its existing authorities under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and Controlled Substances Act to specifically evaluate the use of THC-containing vaping products, and consider appropriate enforcement actions, if and as needed.

With that being said, we must also continue to ensure the adequate and sufficient availability and access of e-cigarettes and nicotine vapor, even flavored products, for adults who are using these products as a substitute for traditional combustion cigarettes, while also ensuring that these products are not marketed, or readily available, to vulnerable youth populations.”
