CAROL CUGLER AND JIM IRETON: READ SALISBURY’S CITY CHARTER!
It is shocking both that the Daily Times would publish the letter discussed below and that it would do so without an editorial note pointing out that the writer is ignorant about the matter of which she speaks. But, given that newspaper’s past record, it’s not really surprising.
Carol Cugler, the writer, is disgruntled that Rick Hoppes has not been appointed the City’s permanent fire chief. Her position is based upon statements made in a Daily Times’ editorial about Hoppes, whom she does not even know. Nonetheless, she feels that the editorial is “well-written.” Clearly, her ignorance is both complete and blissful.
Ms. Cugler suggests that Hoppes has not become the permanent fire chief due to some decision or inaction of the Salisbury City Council. She does not mention by name or position, much less chastise, Jim Ireton or discuss his official duty in appointing the fire chief.
If she would read the City Charter, Ms. Cugler would know that the fire chief is appointed by the mayor with the advice and consent of the Council. Because Ireton has declined to appoint Mr. Hoppes to that position, she should hold him responsible for the situation, not the Council.
We have criticized Ireton for his continuing failure to appoint someone to the position; unless and until he does, the Council cannot exercise its role in the matter. But we do not fault him for failing to appoint Mr. Hoppes to be the City’s fire chief. And if he does so, we will criticize him for doing so based on full knowledge, not editorials in the Daily Times.
Perhaps Greg Bassett should also read the City Charter

Missing Cat: UPDATE: Scott Has Been Reunited With His Owners
Hello, we were wondering if you could help us out by posting a picture of our cat, Scott. He is missing and we believe he slipped out the door last night when we were carrying a large item in the house and had the door propped open for a few seconds. He is 13 years old and starting to get a little frail. He never goes outside, which makes us think he may have got disoriented and wandered off. He is wearing a red collar with a bell and he only has one eye, as the other one was removed last year due to cancer.
We live off Mt Hermon Road in Parsonsburg, in the Berry Road/Shavox Road area. Any help is appreciated, we know you have a high success rate of helping to find lost animals! The contact number is 443-235-1562.
Thanks so much! Jason & Judy
P.S. He was named after Scott Eibey, who was a pitcher with the 1997 Shorebirds and a friend of our family. Just wanted to mention that.

A Comment Worthy Of A Post
"Yep. Those volunteers are on it. Especially at the fire palace! Campbell said they had been assured the volunteers would respond and cover the paid crews furloughs. NOT! At least not there! Earlier today they couldn't even get an engine out to help with a priority patient. The chief in charge left his vehicle at the scene and helped the ambulance guys with a patient and then drove the ambulance to the hospital. And while he was doing that he managed to handle a bunch of other calls at the same time. Someone gave him a little help but it was after the fact. No piece left station 16. I heard it on my scanner and I don't know who the guy was but he did a good job under trying conditions. I don't think we need an all paid department, but those guys ran about 10 calls in about half an hour and they sure earn their money when they have to. Both sides need to get along and realize they need each other. The city should take care of them."
Rita Cosby: Americans Must Appreciate Military, Freedom
Americans need to appreciate our military and our freedom, says Rita Cosby, a special correspondent for “Inside Edition” on CBS whose father became a prisoner of war as a freedom fighter.
“Quiet Hero: Secrets from My Father's Past” details the heroism of her 84-year-old father, Ryszard Kossobudzki, a Polish prisoner of Germany during World War II.
“I hope readers realize how important it is to stand up for what you believe in — to be patriotic, to care about your country and democracy,” Cosby tells Newsmax.TV.

The child of her father’s best friend in the German prison told her, “My father said you are free because people died for you. Don’t forget it. Make sure you appreciate your country,” Cosby says. “That’s very inspirational.”
Anyone who reads the book, which was released Wednesday, will realize how great the U.S. military is, says Cosby, a three-time Emmy winner and New York Times best-selling author.
“I think this book will make people realize how important it is to fight for freedom, how great the values are that we’re founded on and what it means to be free.”
Cosby was inspired to write her book after her mother died a few years ago. Sorting through her mother’s possessions, Cosby found a rusted POW tag, a tattered Polish arm band, and sheets with code names for her father.
That made her realize “I finally need to know my history,” Cosby tells Newsmax.TV. “This is the most important story I’ll ever tell.”
Her father literally saw the beginning of World War II as a 13-year-old living in Warsaw. One day in 1939, he and his own father looked up to see planes overhead.
Cosby’s grandfather was happy to see what he thought was a Polish air force exercise. To his horror, he soon learned that the planes were German craft attacking his homeland.
“A few minutes later, they saw bombs dropping on Warsaw,” she says.
“They tried to flee toward Romania. They were just a few miles away, and then suddenly they get wind that the Russians were coming from the other direction. My father was thrown into World War II.”
Her father’s Catholic family could have sneaked him into Switzerland, Cosby says. “He said, ‘No, I’d rather die with friends than live with strangers.’ I’m so amazed at his courage and devotion to his country.”
Cosby’s dad joined the resistance without even letting his parents know and fought Nazis on the front lines. He was taken to a prison camp near Dresden and escaped.
“He was 90 pounds and 6 feet tall, walking with other escaped POWs in the woods,” she says.
An American plane dropped a note wrapped around a chocolate bar with a red ribbon.
“The note said, ‘Welcome, there are no troops between you and our lines. You’re free,’” Cosby says.
“My dad came upon American troops showering him with cigarettes and chocolates. It’s a great story about American troops and the great role our forces played in World War II and liberating the world.”
Cosby says she wondered about her father’s past ever since she saw the scars on his torso when she was 8. She asked her mom what had happened and was told, “Your father went through something difficult growing up. We don’t talk about it,” Cosby recalls.
“The door was closed.”
So when her father was willing to talk, “I had to seize this moment,” Cosby says.
And not just for herself: “Also for the world to know what these people experienced.”
The Poles weren’t too happy last year when President Obama pulled the plug on Bush administration plans for a European missile shield, Cosby explains.
The Poles actually learned of the decision on Sept. 17, the same date Soviets invaded Poland in 1939. “To get word on that particular day just added salt to the wound,” Cosby says.
“Poles are watching to see where things go with this government.”
Poland is a tremendous ally of the United States, she points out. “It was one of the first to step up in Iraq. They are there in Afghanistan by our side. It’s important America never forgets that.”

Thousands Rally In Favor of Arizona Immigration Law
Up to 3,000 people gathered from around the country across from the Arizona State Capitol in support of Arizona's new immigration law.
"It's a grassroots effort that really took off," Daniel Smeriglio, one of the people behind the march said Friday.
Since Senate Bill 1070 passed in late April, protests and marches have been almost a daily occurrence.
The law requires that police conducting traffic stops or questioning people about possible legal violations ask them about their immigration status if there is "reasonable suspicion" that they're in the country illegally.
Hundreds of motorcycle riders kicked off the downtown Phoenix rally by riding in a procession around the Capitol. Supporters waved American flags and some carried signs that read "What part of illegal don't they understand?"

L.A. Times Smears Exposé Outing President
'Manchurian President' describes extremists in White House posts
The Los Angeles Times has attacked a blockbuster book investigating President Obama and his radical connections, claiming the work echoes a movie in which communists try to hypnotize their way into the White House.
The book's introduction, however, specifically states the work does not echo the film's plot of a president brainwashed into becomes a sleeper agent for communists.
"Pumped up polemics," is how the La Times described a series of hard-hitting political books dominating the nation's best-seller lists, most notably including the new work, "The Manchurian President: Barack Obama's ties to communists, socialists and other anti-American extremists."
The new title, from WND senior reporter and WABC radio host Aaron Klein and historian Brenda J. Elliott, has been a New York Times best-seller since its release last month and just yesterday hit the esteemed Publishers Weekly list of top-selling books.

GOP Still Has Tools To Keep The Heat On White House About Job Offers
The top Republicans on the House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform committees will use several tools at their disposal to keep the pressure on the White House over political job offers to primary candidates in the days and weeks ahead.
Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), the ranking member on Judiciary, on Friday reminded Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) of his aggressive two-year investigation of the George W. Bush administration’s political firing of U.S. attorneys and urged him to pursue questions about the Obama White House’s offer of political appointments to candidates in contested Democratic primaries with the same ardor.
Smith also requested a Judiciary Committee hearing as soon as Congress returns from the Memorial Day recess.
“Under your leadership, the Judiciary Committee spent two years investigating allegations of politicization at the Justice Department— subpoenaing witnesses, demanding tens of thousands of pages of documents, and holding hearings,” he said. “And yet, when it appears that the Obama White House itself has engaged in possible unlawful political activity, Democrats in Congress are noticeably silent.”

TROUBLE IN THE HOLY LAND
White House linked to flotilla organizers
Israel official ties president's adviser to controversial 'Free Gaza Movement'
A top adviser to President Obama is the contact person within the White House for communications with the Free Gaza Movement over plans to challenge Israel's blockade of the terrorist Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, according to a reputable source close to the Netanyahu government.
The source, a career official whose reliability was established through his tips for the book, "Why Israel Can't Wait," identified John O. Brennan, deputy national security adviser for homeland security and counterterrorism, as the contact.
The allegation raises the bizarre possibility that the Free Gaza Movement's flotilla action in the Mediterranean was being coordinated with the White House, something that would align with a shift in U.S. policy toward Israel being debated within the Obama administration.
Mike Hammer, a National Security Council spokesman, told WND flatly the report "is not true."

His response was followed quickly by another denial, when WND asked if Hammer also rejected the claim Brennan was a key force within the White House pushing for a change in U.S. policy toward Israel in demanding an end to the blockade, as the WND source reported.

Archbishop of Canterbury Slaps Episcopal Church For Openly Gay Bishops
Rifts within the Anglican Communion could widen after the archbishop of Canterbury, who has condemned the consecration of openly gay bishops, urged a diminished role Friday for the Episcopal Church.
Earlier this month, a Los Angeles, California, diocese ordained the Rev. Mary Glasspool, the first openly gay bishop ordained in the church since 2004, when Gene Robinson took his post in New Hampshire. The U.S. church has taken flak from conservative factions for openly gay ordinations.
Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, the nominal head of Anglican Communion, shared his concern when Glasspool was consecrated, saying then that the move would further divide the 77 million-member worldwide denomination that includes the Episcopal Church in the United States.
On Friday, he made an even stronger statement in a letter to the communion.
"Our Anglican fellowship continues to experience painful division, and the events of recent months have not brought us nearer to full reconciliation," Williams wrote. "There are still things being done that the representative bodies of the Communion have repeatedly pleaded should not be done; and this leads to recrimination, confusion and bitterness all round.
"It is clear that the official bodies of The Episcopal Church have felt in conscience that they cannot go along with what has been asked of them by others, and the consecration of Canon Mary Glasspool on May 15 has been a clear sign of this."
Williams does not have the power to issue edicts like the pope, but he issued a five-page statement suggesting that provinces (such as the Episcopal Church) or national and regional churches that have broken agreed-upon "promises" should step down from participating in interfaith dialogues.
He said they should also relinquish decision-making powers in a committee that deals with questions of doctrine and authority.
Following Robinson's consecration, the communion leadership laid out three promises, or moratoria, according to the archbishop of Canterbury website:
1. No authorization of blessings services for same-sex unions.
2. No consecrations of bishops living in same-sex relationships.
3. No cross-border interventions (no bishop authorizing any ministry within the diocese of another bishop without explicit permission).
Glasspool has been in an open same-sex relationship for 19 years, a violation of the moratoria. Robinson also was in a same-sex relationship at the time of his consecration.
