As reported earlier in SbyNEWS, Wicomico Middle School was dismissed early today due to a HAZMAT team being dispatched to school. The exact nature and cause of the problem are still unknown.
Tracy Sahler, Public Information Officer for the Wicomico County Board of Education (WCBOE), confirmed that students were dismissed early today due to a potential hazard.
Three staff members reported not feeling well and left the school. Staff were dispatched to Wi Middle to check on the situation but they did not find a measurable problem with the school’s air quality.
Later in the day, someone called 911 and the Salisbury Fire Department HAZMAT team was dispatched to the school. They also tested the school’s air quality and undertook a search for any potential hazard.
Sahler noted that she had not received a formal report from the Fire Department; however, it was her understanding that the HAZMAT team found “an open container of Freon”. At the present time the WCBOE does not know if this caused the three staff members to become ill.
Sahler stated that Board staff were continuing to work to find a cause (if one exists).
