*Update* Troopers Investigating Fatal Crash- Seaford

Seaford- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred earlier this afternoon.

The incident occurred on September 30, 2019 at approximately 3:34 p.m., when a 2017 Fiat Coupe was traveling eastbound on County Seat Highway (US 9) and stopped at the intersection of Asbury Road, intending to turn left. A 2014 Ford Mustang was traveling eastbound on County Seat Highway approaching the Fiat. A 2009 Ford Econoline van was traveling westbound on County Seat Highway approaching the intersection of Asbury Road. For unknown reasons, the operator of the Mustang failed to perceive that the Fiat was stopped. As a result, the front of the Mustang struck the rear of the Fiat causing it to rotate counterclockwise into the westbound lane directly into the path of the van. The van then struck the rear of the Fiat causing it to overturn onto its roof.

The operator of the Fiat, a 48-year-old female from Seaford, DE was properly restrained and pronounced deceased at the scene. Her name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

The operator of the Mustang, a 36-year-old male from Georgetown, DE was properly restrained. He was transported to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and treated and released.

The operator of the van, a 43-year-old male from Salisbury, MD was properly restrained. He was transported to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and treated and released. A passenger in the van was not properly restrained and was also transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

County Seat Highway in the area of Asbury Road was closed for approximately 5.5 hours while the crash was investigated.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Collision Reconstruction Unit.

House Democrats Resist a Win for American Workers

“President Trump and the leaders of Canada and Mexico announced the most significant trade deal in a generation a year ago this week. The U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement is unambiguously a win for America. It would create new jobs, expand export markets, strengthen protections for workers, and generate billions of dollars in new prosperity,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) write in The Wall Street Journal.

“The U.S. Senate stands ready, willing and eager to pass it. There’s only one obstacle, which has been on full display in the last several days: House Democrats have been more interested in picking fights with the White House than clinching bipartisan victories for America. Under pressure from progressives to deny the country any successes during the Trump administration, Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tried to run out the clock on the USMCA,” they write.

“If Mrs. Pelosi and House Democrats tank this trade deal because they don’t like the occupant of the White House, ‘Trump derangement syndrome’ will no longer be some Beltway curiosity. It will have drained potential prosperity from all 50 states and killed a huge number of American jobs.”

In The Federalist, Sean Davis reports that the intelligence community secretly revised the formal whistleblower complaint form in August 2019 to conveniently eliminate the requirement of direct, first-hand knowledge of wrongdoing. The new version of the form, which was not made public until after the complaint about President Trump’s phone call with the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was made public, “allows employees to file whistleblower complaints even if they have zero direct knowledge of underlying evidence” and only heard about alleged wrongdoing from others.

Last week’s House “Intelligence” Committee hearing “quickly devolved into another comical farce when Rep. Adam B. Schiff, California Democrat and ‘intelligence’ chairman, kicked off the hearing by setting aside the just-released transcript of the telephone call between Mr. Trump and the president of Ukraine. He chose instead to read an entirely made up, fraudulent and fabricated transcript of a call that never occurred,” Charles Hurt writes in The Washington Times.

One of the most important online communities of Trump supporters is effectively being destroyed, conservative social media star Carpe Donktum writes in Human Events. What was once a vibrant digital meeting place on Reddit, known as “The_Donald,” is being “quarantined” by the site’s administrators. “Reddit’s strategy is transparent. It has established a template that other social media companies can model to effectively silence conservatives. This strategy slowly turns down the volume on conservative users and platforms instead of banning them outright. By breaking their censorship into varied opaque components, it becomes more difficult to pinpoint, challenging to prove, and nearly impossible to oppose.”

MARYLAND TOBACCO 21 LAW GOES INTO EFFECT OCTOBER 1, 2019

(September 30, 2019, Salisbury, MD) Effective October 1, 2019, the statewide sales age for tobacco and tobacco-related products increases to 21. The law, dubbed “T21,” prohibits the sale to anyone under age 21 of:

· traditional tobacco products;
· electronic smoking devices including e-cigarettes, vape pens, pod devices such as JUUL®;
· e-liquids (even those not containing nicotine), components, parts and accessories.

The only age group exempted from this law is active duty military personnel ages 18 or older with valid military identification. A valid driver's license or other valid government-issued ID are the only acceptable forms of identification for any tobacco purchase (employer or school IDs are not permitted).

Maryland joins 17 other states in implementing a T21 law in response to the U.S. Surgeon General’s warning in 2018 that e-cigarette use among youth is an “epidemic.” E-cigarette use among U.S. high school students increased 78% between 2017 and 2018. 1 in 5 high school students and 1 in 20 middle school students reported using e-cigarettes.

Retailers are required to post a clearly visible sign in their establishments stating, "No person under the age of 21 may be sold tobacco products without military identification." The Maryland Department of Health is mailing signs to tobacco retailers licensed in the state, including vape shops. Signs are also available for download at health.maryland.gov/notobaccosalestominors.

For more information about the T21 law or help quitting tobacco or e-cigarette use, contact the Wicomico County Health Department at 410-334-3480/WICOMICOHEALTH.ORG or call Maryland’s Quit Line at 1-800 Quit-Now (784-8669).

'This guy should not be president': De Niro drops F-word in live anti-Trump rant

Actor and director Robert De Niro unleashed on critics of his vulgar, anti-Trump rhetoric, saying, "F--- them."

Appearing Sunday on CNN's Reliable Sources with host Brian Stelter, De Niro attacked President Trump, saying, "This guy should not be president."

"And when you say that, folks on Fox come after you. I remember at the Tony's when you got up there and cursed," Stelter responded.

"F--- them. F--- them," De Niro said.

At the Tony Awards in 2018, De Niro told the audience, "It's no longer 'Down with Trump'; it's 'F--- Trump.'"

ICE targeted enforcement action nets 57 arrests over 5-day period in VA, DC

WASHINGTON – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) deportation officers arrested 57 individuals during a 5-day targeted enforcement action across Virginia and Washington, D.C. that ended Sept. 25, targeting criminal aliens and other immigration violators.
Of the 57 aliens arrested by ERO deportation officers during this enforcement action, 41 had prior criminal histories that included arrests, pending charges or convictions for crimes including: sexual assault – carnal abuse, aggravated assault, possession of cocaine, larceny, forgery, driving under the influence, illegal entry and illegal re-entry.
“We focus our resources on those who pose a threat to public safety. The arrests made during this targeted enforcement action required weeks of preparation and research by our officers,” said Lyle Boelens, acting field office director for ERO Washington, D.C., which covers both Virginia and the District. “This is the kind of work our officers do every day to help make our communities safer.”
The arrestees, 53 males and four females, included nationals from seven countries: Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador, Argentina, Bolivia and Kazakhstan.
Nationally, approximately 90 percent of all people arrested by ICE during fiscal year 2019 either had a criminal conviction, a pending criminal charge, had illegally re-entered the United States after being previously removed (a felony charge) or were an immigration fugitive subject to a judge’s final order of removal.
ICE focuses its enforcement resources on individuals who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security. However, ICE does not exempt classes or categories of removable aliens from potential enforcement. All of those in violation of the immigration laws may be subject to immigration arrest, detention and, if found removable by final order, removal from the United States. ICE does not conduct sweeps.

'You don't deserve to be here': Florida commissioner ambushes deputy of the month

A Florida city commissioner shocked his colleagues during an awards ceremony for outstanding officers last week when he claimed one of the honorees was a "bad police officer" who had falsely arrested him years earlier.

The surprise moment came after other city officials in Tamarac, Florida, honored Broward Sheriff's Office Deputy Joshua Gallardo with the deputy of the month award for his role in arresting an alleged gang member who had been wanted for murder.

Gallardo accepted his award, took pictures with the city's mayor and was heading back to his seat in when Tamarac City Commissioner Mike Gelin took the microphone and asked him to come back to the front, as seen on a video recording of the meeting.

"Joshua Gallardo, will you come down for a second? It's good to see you again," said Gelin, before erupting into a tirade over what he believed to have been a false arrest in 2015. "You probably don't remember me, but you're the police officer who falsely arrested me four years ago."

‘What we all saw is something we should never see in Ocean City ever’

OCEAN CITY — Everything is on the table after another intolerable unsanctioned motorized event had the resort community “under siege” for much of the weekend.

For the record, the official H2O International (H2Oi) car show was held in Atlantic City for the second straight year last weekend, but, as expected, a huge contingent of car enthusiasts hell-bent on wreaking havoc in Ocean City arrived anyway. Throughout the weekend, Ocean City witnessed the same lawlessness and blatant disrespect from the unregistered, unsanctioned participants for the entire community, its police department and allied law enforcement agencies that have long been associated with the event weekend.

As expected, there were thousands of tricked-out vehicles cruising up and down Coastal Highway and other roadways throughout town and thousands more along the sidewalks and in business parking lots egging them on.

When the dust settled and most of the car enthusiasts cleared out by Sunday evening, left in their wake were trashed parking lots and a community still trying to find answers for the challenging problems. In a prepared statement issued on Sunday morning after a particularly raucous Saturday night, Mayor Rick Meehan said what took place in Ocean City over the weekend “can never happen again.”

Leap year in 2020 will cause several events in OC to be moved

Several events will be moving from their usual dates to a week later on next year’s calendar because 2020 is a leap year.

Many events held at the convention center on 40th Street or at the inlet parking lot will be delayed by one week as a result of the extra day in February.

These events include Cruisin’ OC, which will be moved to May 14-17; Firemen’s Convention will be moved to June 21-25; OC Bikefest will be moved to Sept. 17-20; the 46th annual Sunfest will take place the last weekend of September and the Wine on the Beach Festival will take place the first weekend of October.

Next year’s Springfest and Sunfest will be the reason so many events will be delayed by a week.

“Springfest always falls on the first Thursday of the month, so when you lose that, it pushes back a week,” Special Events Coordinator Frank Miller said. “When you look at Springfest for next year, the first Thursday is still April 30th.”

Safe station ready to help with drug addiction services

The Worcester County Health Department and the Ocean City Fire Department held a tour of the Safe Station at the 15th Street fire station in Ocean City on Wednesday. The Safe Station, which opened on Sept. 1, is for people seeking drug addiction treatment to receive immediate, basic services and a referral to a treatment program.

According to Mike Trader, assistant director for Worcester County’s behavioral health program, when a person walks in for addiction services, he or she will be medically evaluated by emergency medical services staff. Staff may transfer the patient to a hospital if he or she has outstanding medical issues.

If there are no outstanding medical issues, fire house staff will call the Worcester County’s peer support group and someone will come over to speak with the patient in a designated room and determine the patient’s program needs. These programs could be in-patient or out-patient treatment or a recovery group.

Susan Rice: Obama Stored Transcripts on Server

Susan Rice, who served on President Barack Obama’s Cabinet as national security adviser, says the previous administration also stored communications on a top-secret server though only if the document was classified.

Rice was speaking at the Texas Tribune Festival Friday about the White House’s decision to move a transcript of President Donald Trump’s July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelensky to one of the government’s most sensitive computer systems.

Rice blasted the Trump administration for the move.

Jake Tapper accuses Jim Jordan of spreading 'wild allegations' against Hunter Biden

CNN anchor Jake Tapper accused GOP Rep. Jim Jordan of spreading "wild allegations" against Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, during Sunday morning's edition of State of the Union.

Hunter Biden's work for the energy company Burisma has garnered renewed scrutiny after it was revealed that President Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to look into the former vice president and his son during a phone call in July. The transcript of the call, which was released last week, confirmed a whistleblower complaint about the conversation.

"He gets hired by a company in an industry he has no experience in, and oh, that’s fine, and all you folks in the press and Democrats, oh, no problem here? Try taking that message to the American people," Jordan said. "And when they see the vice president’s son getting paid $50,000 a month in a field and industry he has no experience in, I wonder what Hunter Biden did in those board meetings?"

Ken Starr says Trump showed 'poor judgment' but 'that's not a crime'

Former independent counsel Ken Starr said the impeachment inquiry into President Trump is "doomed to fail."

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced the formal investigation on Tuesday in response to the ongoing controversy surrounding Trump's July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. During the conversation the president asked Zelensky to investigate 2020 front-runner Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, over his work with an energy company in Ukraine.

“Impeachment is doomed to fail given what we know," Starr told Fox News on Saturday. "Now, obviously the facts are flowing in. In the history of the country, obviously presidential efforts to impeach do not work, that we know,” began the independent counsel who has a major figure in the impeachment of President Bill Clinton in 1998.

Therapy puppies help teens in Maryland juvenile centers

LAUREL, Maryland––When visitors and staff members walk through the front door of Thomas JS Waxter Children’s Center, they’re greeted by sign-in sheets, hand-held metal detectors and, now, a bouncing, fluffy yellow pup named Clay. Affectionately described by staff as Waxter’s “welcoming committee,” he is a 20-week-old Miniature Goldendoodle.

Clay and an 8-month-old Bernedoodle, Bayr, tend to the emotional needs of youth held at two Department of Juvenile Services secure detention centers.

Resident teens at Waxter, a 42-bed girls’ facility, and the Western Maryland Children’s Center in Hagerstown, a 24-bed boys’ facility, now have designated time with a puppy during recreation, and access to them during challenging counseling sessions.

Residents at the all-girls facility have taken to Clay. They tap on glass windows to get his attention as he barks and bounds around the dayrooms and bolt toward him, shouting his name in excitement as he bursts out onto the yard.

All proceeds will go to the Wounded Warrior Project and local charities.

“I chose the Wounded Warrior foundation because I have family members and friends in the military,” he said. “I also had a friend who died while serving a few years ago. So this means a lot to me.”

Bratten said he also plans to contribute some of the proceeds to other organizations, including the Pittsville Volunteer Fire Department.

“Whatever is left will be distributed to other local charities,” he said.

Bratten said he is no stranger to haunted attractions.

The Bee Explains: Common Racist Hand Signals

If there’s one thing you’ve noticed about white nationalists, it’s that they have hands. And something they’ve been doing a lot with their hands lately is sending out secret messages in support of white supremacy. If you see anyone doing any of these hand gestures, you can be certain they are a racist and should report them to the nearest racism reporting facility (usually Twitter).
Racism is A-OK.

This racist hand symbol is very popular right now. It’s to say “OK” as in “Racism is A-OK.”

One Race to Rule Them All

This sign signals to other people that you believe one race is superior to all the others. Just say no to the One symbol.

You want me to go into that room with all those kids, correct their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse, monitor their dress habits, censor their T-shirt messages and instill in them a love for learning.

You want me to check their backpacks for weapons, wage war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, and raise their sense of self-esteem and personal pride.

You want me to teach them patriotism and good citizenship, sportsmanship and fair play, and how to register to vote, balance a check book, and apply for a job.

You want me to check their heads for lice, recognize signs of antisocial behavior, and ensure that they all pass their final exams.

You also want me to provide them with an equal education regardless of their handicap and communicate regularly with their parents in English, Arabic or any other language, by letter, telephone, newsletter, and report card

You want me to do all this with a piece of chalk, a blackboard, a bulletin board, a few books, a big smile, and a starting salary that qualifies me for "New Start."

(Added by DDP): [It sounds that you want me to do the job at which my student's parents are failing miserably. It sounds like instead of one, two or five rug-rats, curtain-climbers or juvenile delinquents to raise you are going to burden by with thirty students and expect me to attain those results that are not expected of PARENTS.]

You want me to do all this, and then you tell me......

I CAN'T wear a necklace with a little cross, mention God, or say "Merry Christmas" because someone might take offense? " [You forbid me from providing my students with the "American Culture" because it is "RACIST". You accuse me of "white privilege" while hard work might be the reason I have been able to become a teacher. A roundup of Maryland laws taking effect Oct. 1

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland — Hundreds of Maryland laws are going into effect Tuesday, spanning subjects from criminal justice reform to election law to medical cannabis.

A generous number of the bills fall under the subjects of criminal justice and health. Senate Bill 707, which passed in the 2018 legislative session but is going into effect Tuesday, bans the sale of bump stocks in Maryland. Penalties for offenses such as hate crime threats and solicitation for murder are becoming more severe, while gambling is being decriminalized.

House Bill 116 will require jails to screen all inmates for opioid use disorder, while Senate Bill 909 will require healthcare practitioners to obtain consent before performing certain bodily exams on patients who are unconscious or under anesthesia.

Age limits are also being changed in a variety of ways. The minimum age for purchasing tobacco products such as vapes will be raised from 18 to 21, while the minimum age of detention within the Department of Juvenile Services is being raised from 7 to 12, with exceptions for violent crimes. Minors are also now prohibited from using tanning facilities.

Pollak: Democrats Are Meddling in the 2020 Election

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) made a colossal mistake this week by agreeing to an impeachment inquiry before she had seen the transcript of President Donald Trump’s conversation with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine.

It was a strategic mistake, because the evidence contradicted her claims. But it was also a terrible mistake for the country, because it cast the fairness of the 2020 presidential election into serious doubt.

Trump supporters will rally to support him at the polls — a lesson Democrats should have learned when Republicans lost the 1998 midterm elections in the midst of impeaching President Bill Clinton (who, unlike Trump, had actually committed crimes). Moreover, public support for the inquiry will collapse once the facts are known — through the media fog that is giving the misleading “whistleblower” complaint more credibility than the underlying evidence.

But Democrats hope that impeaching Trump — or even suggesting impeachment — will place a permanent cloud over his head that will make it impossible for him to win in 2020.

If they are right, Trump supporters will look at impeachment as the reason for his defeat. And the fact that Democrats have relied on a CIA source who had no direct evidence of wrongdoing in an attempt to bring down President Trump will be seared into Trump supporters’ collective memory.

The message Democrats are sending is that not only do they refuse to accept the results of the 2016 election as legitimate, but they are willing to use the intelligence community to reverse the results of that election.

Senators criticize recent Central American agreements to address border crisis

WASHINGTON – Several Democratic senators sparred with representatives of the Trump administration Wednesday over recent agreements to divert asylum seekers to Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.

The senators objected in a foreign relations committee meeting that the administration has not shared with Congress the agreements with the three countries. The lawmakers also criticized the “safe third country” initiatives, given the violence and other dangers in the three nations.

“There is no justification for withholding this information from Congress and from the American people, other than this administration does not want the public to know what it’s doing in the name of the United States,” said Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

President Donald Trump entered a “Safe Third Country” agreement in July with Guatemala, with El Salvador last Friday, and with Honduras on Wednesday, the same day at the hearing.

Elizabeth Warren facing skepticism over 'Medicare For All' on campaign trail

ROCK HILL, South Carolina — Elizabeth Warren's embrace of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders' "Medicare For All" proposal is beginning to dog her on the campaign trail.

The senator from Massachusetts and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate's catchphrase "I've got a plan for that" doesn't apply to a healthcare platform since hers is largely modeled on the longstanding idea pushed by Sanders, a socialist running for the nomination on a far-left plank.

Warren has proudly declared during the opening debate over the summer in Miami she was "with Bernie" on his signature single-payer proposal.

But in two town halls in New Hampshire this week and then again on Saturday in Rock Hill, South Carolina, likely Democratic voters seized the microphone and requested more information on "Medicare For All" or pressed her on how the program would be funded, including whether it would result in a middle class tax hike.

A Viewer Writes........I hope Mr. King wins

I know you and I don't see eye to eye on all the issues.

But I just had a home visit with Wayne King and Michelle Neal Bradley. Mr. King is a very nice man and he cares about alot of the same things I do. I have been voicing my support for him on social media and he paid me a visit. I was shocked. It's my birthday.

Ok,so maybe I am a libtard. 😔

But not ALL the time on every issue. I support Mr. King because he's concerned about ALL the people of Salisbury.

I was honored by his visit and his reaching out to other residents of Riverside Homes. Jake Day claims he's been here a dozen times. He must be the Flash because nobody here has ever seen him.

Just because somebody is a conservative republican doesn't make them against poor people. I found that out today. I am hopeful for the future and I hope Mr. King wins.

A clarion call to the Jewish people of the United States

The Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) is upon us and we listen to the shofar (Ram’s horn or trumpet). In the Jewish tradition, if we do not listen to the shofar, the holiday has not been observed. The sounds of the shofar can be a battle cry, or a mournful cry. It is the sound of the presence of G-d, a call out to G-d when we need His intervention.

There are three basic trumpet calls, one is called T’ruah. It consists of rapid short bursts to arouse from our slumbering souls that have grown complacent; to alert the Jewish people for the need to come together for battle or the need to assemble because of an urgent situation.

This holiday is the anniversary of the creation of mankind and the renewal of our relationship with G-d. As Judge, G-d will allocate what will happen to us in the coming year.

Perhaps this is the ideal time for the Jewish people face an ugly fact:

The Democrat party, to whom Jews have been loyal since their arrival to America, is infested with Jew hatred and their support of Israel has eroded. The Jewish members of Congress are silent. They have failed to learn the lesson of the Holocaust which is this: It is the responsibility of every individual to not be silent in the face of hate but to confront it.

In the past, Jews in Europe didn’t want to believe what they heard or saw until it was too late.

I believe it is the same situation when it comes to the Democrat party.

Mel Brooks: Political Correctness is Stupid and Killing Comedy

Editor's note: This is an article from 2017 but still holds true today.

There’s a lot of things that have changed since a little thing called “political correctness” pervaded our culture. What you can wear, what you can eat, what you can celebrate… even the history that we teach in school has been influenced by the culture of political correctness.

But it’s also hampering another aspect of life important to society: laughter. Or to be more specific, the comedy which drives that laughter.

Such is the observation of one of society’s foremost comedians, Mel Brooks.

In an interview with the BBC, Brooks called the PC culture a “stupid” element sounding the death knell of comedy. Reporting on the interview, The Telegraph declared:

WashPost: State Dept Probes Emails Sent to Hillary Clinton

The long-running State Department investigation into former Secretary Hillary Clinton's private email server has extended to as many as 130 U.S. diplomats who sent messages to to her private email, The Washington Post reported.

The private server might have been scrubbed, but those officials who exchanged potentially classified material with her private email account has permitted the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security to get a glimpse of what it contained.

The investigation that began during the Obama administration has intensified now as it nears completion and the State Department has contacted those who exchanged retroactively classified emails that potentially violate security.

"This has nothing to do with who is in the White House," a senior State Department official told the Post. "This is about the time it took to go through millions of emails, which is about 3½ years."

TIME FOR AMERICA TO HIT THE STREETS: COUNTER THE LEFTIST COUP BY BRINGING TRUTH TO THEIR EVENTS

The Deep State is trying to impeach President Trump with their usual fraud like they did with the Russia hoax and Justice Kavanaugh — now it’s time to counter their lies by bringing the truth and central issues to the Democrats at their own campaign events.

The left is the group working with Communist China, attempting to break our borders, engaging in mass censorship, trying to disarm the American people, and overturn the will of the voter through more cooked-up impeachment frauds like this newest Ukraine hoax.

Mindlessly protesting and hoping the mainstream media will cover you is not the way to win. It’s time for patriots to take over Democrat events in a peaceful and lawful way and bring the truth to them, such as when Infowarriors famously confronted Bill Clinton in 2016 during his events about his past rape case settlements.

Letter to UN from 500 scientists and professionals: There is no climate emergency.

Your Excellencies,

There is no climate emergency.
A global network of more than 500 knowledgeable and experienced scientists and professionals in climate and related fields have the honor to address to Your Excellencies the attached European Climate Declaration, for which the signatories to this letter are the national ambassadors.

The general-circulation models of climate on which international policy is at present founded are unfit for their purpose. Therefore, it is cruel as well as imprudent to advocate the squandering of trillions on the basis of results from such immature models. Current climate policies pointlessly, grievously undermine the economic system, putting lives at risk in countries denied access to affordable, continuous electrical power.

Maryland groups condemn federal refugee admissions reduction

BALTIMORE—Maryland organizations criticized as “cynical” and “astounding” the Thursday decision by the Trump Administration to decrease the national refugee admissions ceiling to its lowest level ever.

The cap for fiscal 2020 will be 18,000 refugees, down from the ceiling of 110,000 set by President Obama in 2017, according to a news release from the State Department. The decision also allows cities and states to opt out of accepting refugees.

“It’s a cynical renunciation of U.S. humanitarian commitment,” Betty Symington, the executive director of the Episcopal Refugee and Immigrant Center Alliance, told Capital News Service. Symington described the decision as “part and parcel of a multifaceted attack on immigrants in general.”

Symington, whose organization supports refugees and other immigrants with housing, emergency assistance, education and other services, said, “It’s a very complicated situation but also a very simple one. Unfortunately, we’re not surprised.”

Embarrassing Leaks Led to Clampdown on Trump’s Phone Records

The White House moved to clamp down on access to records of presidential phone calls after problematic leaks of sensitive discussions early in the Trump administration, according to people with knowledge of the actions, culminating in the use of a secret national security server which is now central to the impeachment probe.

Back-to-back leaks of controversial remarks by President Trump during calls with leaders of Mexico and Australia resulted from an unusually loose record-distribution policy in the first days of the Trump White House, one of these people said, leading to the secret server’s eventual use for records of calls involving leaders of Saudi Arabia, Russia and Ukraine.

White House officials also moved to significantly limit the number of individuals who could listen in on many of his calls, or who could access the records after those calls were concluded, the people said.

Joe Biden Campaign Demands Media Censor Rudy Giuliani

The presidential campaign of former Vice President Joe Biden sent a letter to every major television network, demanding that they keep former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani off the air.

The letter was reported by New York Times media reporter Michael Grynbaum:

NEW: Team BIDEN just sent letter to every major TV news network, calling for RUDY to be kept off the airwaves. “He will knowingly and willingly lie,” letter says. pic.twitter.com/7oGQ4b3f4X

— Michael M. Grynbaum (@grynbaum) September 29, 2019

The letter states, in part:

We are writing today with grave concern that you continue to book Rudy Giuliani on your air to spread false, debunked conspiracy theories on behalf of Donald Trump. While you often fact check his statements in real time during your discussions, that is no longer enough. By giving him your air time, you are allowing him to introduce increasingly unhinged, unfounded and desperate lies into the national conversation.

We write to demand that in service to the fact, you no longer book Rudy Giuliani, a surrogate for Donald Trump who has demonstrated that he will knowingly and willingly lie in order to advance his own narrative.

(The Biden campaign itself has been known to lie: the former vice president continues to repeat the Charlottesville “very fine people” hoax after being confronted about it at the Iowa State Fair by Breitbart News, for example.)

The statement goes on to claim that Giuliani’s claims about potential corruption by Hunter Biden in Ukraine are “completely baseless.”

‘World’s Largest Offshore Wind Turbine’ Now Planned Off Ocean City

OCEAN CITY — One of the two companies holding permits for offshore wind energy farms off the coast announced it was planning on using 12-megwatt, 853-foot turbines described as the “world’s largest offshore wind turbine,” making the resort area a guinea pig of sorts for the fledgling industry in the U.S.

Last week, in response to a letter from Ocean City officials to Gov. Larry Hogan reiterating the town’s position not on renewable energy, but more specifically the distance of the proposed turbines from the shore, US Wind pointed out it was currently planning to use eight-megawatt turbines that would measure 643-feet in height. US Wind officials said despite the change in height, the increased capacity of the taller turbines would allow the company to reduce the number of turbines off the Ocean City coast by half, from the proposed 64 to 32.

Just days later, officials from the Danish company Orsted, which holds the permit for a second wind energy area (WEA) approved in 2017 by the Maryland Public Service Commission, announced it has chosen GE Renewable Energy as its preferred turbine supplier for two of its offshore wind energy projects in the mid-Atlantic region, including the Skipjack project off Maryland’s coast. Orsted’s other proposed project in its mid-Atlantic cluster is off the coast of New Jersey.

As a result, Orsted is now proposing to deploy GE Renewable Energy’s Haliade-X 12-megawatt wind turbines in its Skipjack project off Ocean City’s coast. The Haliade-X 12-megawatt has been described by GE Renewable Energy as the “world’s largest offshore wind turbine,” and its proposed use off the Ocean City coast would be the first commercial deployment in the world, according to a release from Orsted.

BREAKING: Pelosi to announce formal impeachment inquiry of Trump

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who for months resisted efforts to launch impeach proceedings against President Donald Trump, will announce a formal inquiry on Tuesday, according to two Democratic sources close to her.

Pelosi's change of heart comes as dozens of House Democrats — now more than two-thirds of the caucus — have come out in support of an impeachment inquiry in the wake of reports that Trump may have withheld aid to Ukraine to pressure officials there to investigate the son of political rival Joe Biden.

Pelosi is expected to announce the development after an all-caucus meeting she called for 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT WICOMICO'S NEW ATTENDANCE RULES

Students should strive to be in school all day, every day. Consistent full-day attendance supports students in achieving academic success, graduation, and development into productive members of society.

Parents/guardians and students should review the Student Attendance Policy and Student Attendance Procedure to know the rules for excused and unexcused absences for everything from family vacations to college and employer visits to student illness or death in the immediate family.

Students who have more than 5 unexcused absences in a marking term must successfully complete an attendance intervention plan to avoid failing the marking term.

An attendance intervention plan may involve the student staying after school for up to two hours a day, with parents/guardians responsible for alternative transportation home if needed. Student attendance is a family responsibility.

For 2019-2020, the 1st marking term will be a “no fault” period as students and parents/guardians become familiar with the new attendance policy and procedure; attendance will not impact 1st marking term course grades. However, students who have 5 or more unexcused absences in the 1st marking term will have to complete an attendance intervention plan.

The 'OK' Hand Gesture Is Now Listed As A Symbol Of Hate

The "OK" hand gesture, commonly seen as a way of indicating that all is well, has now been classified as something else: a symbol of hate.

On Thursday, the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish civil rights organization, added 36 symbols to its "Hate on Display" database including the index finger-to-thumb sign that in some corners of the Internet has become associated with white supremacy and the far right.

Oren Segal, director of the ADL's Center on Extremism, told NPR that for years on fringe online message boards such as 4chan and 8chan, the "OK" sign has been deployed in memes and other images promoting hate. Given the number of white supremacists who have adopted it, he said it can now carry a nefarious message.

'I support impeachment': Hillary Clinton says Donald Trump 'has betrayed our country'

Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday that she agrees with congressional Democrats who aim to impeach Donald Trump and remove him from office.

Trump threw a rhetorical pitch at her chin hours later, telling reporters at the United Nations that the nation of Ukraine 'could very well' have copies of tens of thousands of emails Clinton and her lawyers famously deleted while they were under subpoena.

'I think that one of the great crimes committed is Hillary clinton deleting 33,000 emails after Congress sent her a subpoena,' Trump said. 'You can't get rid of evidence like that,' he added.

Clinton had blasted him on Twitter, writing that '[t]he president of the United States has betrayed our country.'

Change coming to avoid huge Bay Bridge backups

After horrendous Friday backups at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge that lasted hours and stretched for 14 miles approaching the bridge on U.S. 50, the Maryland Department of Transportation will change what happens in the future.

When eastbound traffic backs up to Interstate 97, the department will hold westbound traffic on the bridge for short periods of time to allow three lanes of traffic headed to the Eastern Shore and Delmarva beaches, unless prevented by severe weather conditions.

The backups occurred on the first weekend that the bridge did not have two-way operations on the westbound span because of a long-term, $27 million maintenance project.

The backups were so bad that they prompted the Maryland Transportation Authority to temporarily waive tolls on the bridge.

READ: White House transcript of Trump call with Ukrainian president

The transcript of the July 25 phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioning former Vice President Joe Biden and allegations of corruption was released today following an intelligence community whistleblower complaint centered around the conversation.

A whistleblower with knowledge of the phone call made a complaint to Trump-appointed intelligence community inspector general Michael Atkinson, who deemed the complaint “serious” and “urgent," but acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire declined to release the contents of the whistleblower complaint to Congress after consulting with the Justice Department. This set off a firestorm on Capitol Hill, and lawmakers called for President Trump to be impeached, following claims that Trump pressured Ukraine to investigate the 2020 Democratic presidential front-runner and his son Hunter Biden.

Attorney General Frosh Joins Coalition Opposing Trump Rule That Would Take Food Assistance Away from Millions of People

Proposed Changes to SNAP Would Violate Federal Law; Harm Low-Income Families, Children, Seniors, and the Economy

BALTIMORE, MD (September 24, 2019) - Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh today joined a coalition of 24 Attorneys General opposing the Trump administration’s proposed changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).  The proposed changes would take basic food assistance away from more than three million people, disqualify hundreds of thousands of children from free school meals, and punish working families with modest savings.

The coalition filed a comment letter against a proposed United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) rule, the “Revision of Categorical Eligibility in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program,” that would end states’ ability to set rules for SNAP eligibility based on the unique needs of their communities.

The SNAP program is the country’s most important anti-hunger program.  The program provides people with limited incomes the opportunity to access nutritious food, and is a crucial component of federal and state efforts to help lift people out of poverty.  In their letter, the attorneys general argue that the proposed rule would violate federal law and harm the states, their residents, their local economies, and public health.

“This Trump Administration action will cause millions to go hungry,” said Attorney General Frosh.  “SNAP lifts people out of poverty.  It reduces food insecurity and malnutrition.  Each state must have the ability to feed its children, its elderly, and its poor.  That is why we will fight these heartless policies.”

Based on federal guidelines, each state designs its own process for how low-income people can apply for SNAP benefits.  The states must track whether participants meet the income and asset requirements for the program on a monthly basis.  The Trump administration’s proposed rule would eliminate a long-standing policy known as “broad based categorical eligibility” (BBCE). BBCE allows states to consider local economic factors, like high costs of living or costs of childcare, when determining eligibility for SNAP.  It also lets states adopt less restrictive asset limits so that families, seniors, and people with disabilities can have some savings without losing food aid.  BBCE is used by 39 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

This proposed rule is the latest in a series of unlawful attempts by the Trump administration to cut important safety-net programs for vulnerable populations. In the comment letter, the attorneys general argue that the proposed rule harms the states by:

  • Taking food assistance away from 3.1 million vulnerable people:  If finalized, the proposed rule would cause 3.1 million low-income people, including working poor families with children, seniors, and people with disabilities, to lose critical nutrition assistance.  According to the administration’s own calculations, the rule would cause low-income Americans to lose at least $10.5 billion in SNAP benefits over four years.
  • Causing 265,000 children to lose free school meals:  Children in households that receive SNAP are eligible for free meals at school.  This rule change would mean an estimated 265,000 children would lose access to free school meals, leading to food insecurity and malnourishment.  According to studies, food-insecure children are more likely to have learning difficulties and reduced academic performance, stomachaches, frequent headaches and colds, iron deficiency anemia, asthma, and mental health problems.
  • Disproportionately taking SNAP benefits from seniors:  According to estimates, this rule change would have a disproportionate impact on seniors.  More than 13 percent of all SNAP households with elderly members would lose food assistance, which could potentially force low-income seniors to choose between paying for necessary medication and food.
  • Harming public health and increasing health care costs:  States’ medical, disability, and other systems will be burdened when people who lose SNAP benefits become food insecure or malnourished.  Food insecurity is linked to some of the most potentially costly health conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, and complications in pregnancy.  Studies have shown that SNAP is associated with better health and, correspondingly, reduced health care costs.
  • Harming state economies:  SNAP benefits are provided to low-income individuals with immediate spending needs, and SNAP boosts local economies by increasing consumer demand, injecting money directly into the economy, creating jobs, and supporting national and local retailers and the food industry generally.  If 3.1 million people lose SNAP benefits, these cuts will have negative ripple effects across the nation’s economy.
  • Increasing administrative burdens on states:  The Government Accountability Office has consistently found that polices like BBCE can save state and federal resources and improve productivity.  The proposed rule will eliminate these efficiency gains and increase administrative costs—and every dollar that states spend on administrative costs is money taken away from needy families.

The attorneys general also argue that the proposed rule violates the federal Administrative Procedure Act (APA), which governs how federal agencies implement rule changes.  Among other violations of the APA, the proposed rule fails to provide a legitimate justification for changing longstanding USDA policy, conflicts with the clear intent of Congress, and exceeds USDA’s authority.

In addition to Maryland, the letter was signed by the attorneys general of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
