O'Malley Cuts $5.7 Million More From Wicomico County
Late Wednesday afternoon, the Maryland Board of Public Works approved O'Malley's recommendations for $ 454 million in cuts. The plan included $210 million in cuts for roads, community colleges, heath, and public safety for local counties.
Wicomico stands to lose $ 5.7 million in state aid per the Governor's detailed plan below.
What, in your opinion, should County Executive Rick Pollitt cut to balance the budget?

Kratovil Brings In $1.23 Million In Stimulus Money To Eastern Shore
Rep. Kratovil and Ag Secretary Vilsack Announce Over $1.23 Million in Stimulus Funding for Rural Water Projects and Community Facilities on Maryland’s Eastern Shore
Rural water project will benefit Kent County while facilities funding will go to fire houses in Cambridge, Parsonsburg, and Wicomico County Fire Police Association.
Washington, DC – Rep. Frank Kratovil and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that $1,231,000 will be made available in funding for both rural water projects and community facilities on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
The rural water funds are part of a total $175.8 million in water and environmental projects that are being funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed into law last February. The Projects will help provide safe drinking water and improved wastewater treatment for rural communities. Of the total, $1.1 million will be directed toward Kent County Maryland in the form of a $780,000 direct loan and $330,000 grant.
“I have said from the beginning that if a stimulus package was going to work to get our economy back on track it would need to focus on rebuilding and revitalizing our rural infrastructure in places like Kent County,” said Rep. Frank Kratovil. “What these funds will do is provide reliable drinking water and sanitary waste disposal all while protecting the infrastructure and creating jobs.”
The rural facilities funding are part of $54 million in community facilities projects that are being funded immediately with federal funds that are being provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Of the total, a $21,000 grant will be directed toward the Neck District Volunteer fire company in Cambridge, MD, the Parsonsburg Volunteer Fire Department will receive a $50,000 grant and the Wicomico county Fire Police Association will be awarded a $18,887 grant.
“These grants show a commitment to making our communities better. They will go toward essential services that provide for the safety of our citizens as well as revitalizing many of the buildings that serve as focal points of many small rural communities,” said Rep. Kratovil. “Through the stimulus we are creating jobs and improving services right here on the Eastern Shore in real time.”
Feds Guilty Of Sending Inmates Stimulus Checks
1,700 prisoners mistakenly got payments of $250 each, most were returned
WASHINGTON - The federal government sent about 3,900 economic stimulus payments of $250 each this spring to people who were in no position to use the money to help stimulate the economy: prison inmates.
The checks were part of the massive economic recovery package approved by Congress and President Barack Obama in February. About 52 million Social Security recipients, railroad retirees and those receiving Supplemental Security Income were eligible for the one-time checks.
Prison inmates are generally ineligible for federal benefits. However, 2,200 of the inmates who received checks got to keep them because, under the law, they were eligible, said Mark Lassiter, a spokesman for the Social Security Administration. They were eligible because they weren't incarcerated in any of the three months before the recovery package was enacted.

Louise Smith Violates Salisbury City Council Rules Of Order!!!!!
SALISBURY CITY COUNCIL REGULATIONS AND RULES OF ORDER (As of July 14, 2008)
7. _PUBLIC INPUT_
A. Public comments should be directed to the agenda item under consideration. The Council President shall rule on the germaneness of the citizen comments.
B. A citizen who has been recognized by the Council President to address the Council shall state his or her name, address, and organization affiliation, if they so choose.
I have provided clear and exact evidence proving Louise Smith violated the City Council's Rules of Order and Louise Smith owes Ann a public apology. Of course, not only did the Daily Times completely ignore this incident, they had the same opportunity to research it and instead chose to bury it once again.
Again, this is exactly why Salisbury News is so vital to this community. Mayor Ireton needs to also become familiar with the rules and not jump the gun by telling Ann he won't have this drama during Council Meetings. His statement should have been directed at Louise Smith and not the other way around.
I see a RECALL in the making, how about you?
Louise Smith, Salisbury News is asking for your resignation.

Americans To Tap Brakes On Labor Day Travel
39.1 million to take to roads, skies this year, down 13.3 percent from ’08
NEW YORK - Americans will cut their Labor Day holiday travel plans dramatically this year to save money in a tough economy and to keep their children near home at the start of the school year.
Some 39.1 million domestic travelers will take to the roads and airways during the end-of-summer holiday, down a record 13.3 percent from a year ago, according to a survey released on Wednesday by the AAA auto and travel group.
“This is obviously a very significant decline,” said Geoff Sundstrom, spokesman for AAA. “Labor Day last year was the strongest in at least nine years, so we're coming off of a very strong travel pattern.”

Durable goods rise last month by largest amount in two years
WASHINGTON - Orders for durable goods rose last month by the largest amount in two years, as the manufacturing sector rebounded from the depths of the recession.

More good news came on the housing front. New U.S. home sales jumped 9.6 percent in July, a fourth straight monthly gain that beat analysts’ expectations.

Bubba Comegys Summons Police Officer To Remove Ann Von Forthuber
It was Gary Comegys who immediately got up from his chair and summoned a Salisbury Police Detective to remove Ann Von Forthubet from Monday night's Council Meeting.
Gary wasted no time getting up and heading to the Officer and quite frankly, I've seen and heard enough!
Is Gary Comegys so afraid of a woman that he feels the need to get Security to have one removed? It's just more intimidation to assure NO ONE comes to Council Meetings and its simply more of the same old crap.
Then again, (to those of you who voted for this Idiot) I hope you people can look yourselves in a mirror and recognize the socialism and control you're trying to create and Ireton stands right there with them. We're not going to have this kind of drama here, Ireton said.

BREAKING NEWS:
Brace Yourself: Beer Prices Are Going Up
Brewers say rising commodity costs and lower volumes are forcing them to raise its price tags.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Beer drinkers beware: The cost of a cold one is going up.
Brewers across the globe are hiking prices to compensate for lower volumes and higher commodity costs in the recession.
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer and maker of Budweiser, announced plans to raise prices Tuesday.
"We plan on taking price increases on a majority of volume and in a majority of markets this fall," Anheuser-Busch InBev said in a statement. "The increase helps cover some input costs."
The U.S.-Belgian brewer said prices will go up "across different price tiers" including its high and low-end brands.

Sanchez Will Start For The Jets
So Sanchez has won the competition with Kellen Clemens.
But, frankly, we don't think there were actually was a competition. We think that Sanchez was destined to be the Week One starter the moment the Jets pulled the trigger on a trade up by 12 spots in round one to get Sanchez with the fifth overall pick in the draft.
Instead of merely handing the job to Sanchez, however, the Jets forced him to "earn" it. If nothing else, it's a great way to push the kid during training camp, and to keep him from becoming complacent.
In the end, there's no way Ryan was going to go with anyone other than Sanchez. Last year, G.M. Mike Tannenbaum decided that the Jets needed to trade for Brett Favre because 2006 second-round pick Kellen Clemens wasn't the guy. So if Sanchez can't beat out the guy that wasn't the guy in 2008, how much longer would Tannebaum be the guy deciding which guys will be on the team?

RAVEN'S ROOST COMING TO THE SHORE!
FRUITLAND, MD (Aug. 21, 2009) – When the Baltimore Ravens swooped into Maryland in 1996 Bob and Tammy Weber of Salisbury became huge fans.
Since then, the Weber’s children have just about left the family roost. Now the couple has opted to adopt the purple football team and hope other gridiron fans will join them.
The Weber’s are forming the first Salisbury Ravens Roost. Ocean City and Fenwick Island also have official Ravens Roosts.
“The real reason for us wanting to do this.” explains Bob Weber, a district manager with Rommel’s Holdings Inc’s, Ace Hardware Division, “Is that our kids are grown and we want to meet more people, as well as we both like to contribute to the community.”
The Ravens Roost is a non-profit social organization committed to supporting professional football in Baltimore, specifically the Baltimore Ravens.
In addition to gathering on Sundays at Chicago Uno’s Bar and Grill, 100 E Cedar Lane, in Fruitland, to cheer on the Ravens, the roost will provide the opportunity to participate in fundraising events to benefit local charities.
The initial letter of interest has been submitted to the Council of Ravens Roosts.
“We are now in the process of establishing the initial 25 ‘charter’ members and the officers and Board of Directors of the organization,” says Weber.
Please respond by Sept.1st. Additional membership drives will be held at the “remote stadium,” Chicago Uno’s Bar and Grill in Fruitland, once they are officially approved by the council.
All members must be at least 21 years of age. If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact Bob or Tammy by phone at (443) 521-5461, or by e-mail, salisburyravensroost@yahoo.com
TED KENNEDY, LIBERAL LION, IS DEAD
Liberal lion loses yearlong battle with brain cancer at Massachusetts home
In nearly 50 years in the Senate, Kennedy served alongside 10 presidents — his brother John Fitzgerald Kennedy among them — compiling an impressive list of legislative achievements on health care, civil rights, education, immigration and more.
His only run for the White House ended in defeat in 1980. More than a quarter-century later, he handed then-Sen. Barack Obama an endorsement at a critical point in the campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, explicitly likening the young contender to President Kennedy.
Obama's Plan to Desecrate 9/11
By Matthew Vadum
The Obama White House is behind a cynical, coldly calculated political effort to erase the meaning of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks from the American psyche and convert Sept. 11 into a day of leftist celebration and statist idolatry.
This effort to reshape the American psyche has nothing to do with healing the nation and everything to do with easing the nation along in the ongoing radical transformation of America that President Obama promised during last year's election campaign. The president signed into law a measure in April that designated Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service, but it's not likely many lawmakers thought this meant that day was going to be turned into a celebration of ethanol, carbon emission controls, and radical community organizing.
The administration's plans were outlined in an Aug. 11 White House-sponsored teleconference call run by Obama ally Lennox Yearwood, president of the Hip Hop Caucus, and Liv Havstad, the group's senior vice president of strategic partnerships and programs.
Yearwood, who uses the honorific "Reverend" before his name, has been in the news in recent years, usually for getting arrested. After Democrats took back Congress, the rowdy activist was handcuffed outside a congressional hearing in September 2007 when Gen. David Petraeus was to testify. Yearwood told the "Democracy Now" radio program that he wanted to attend the hearing to hear Petraeus give his report. "I knew that when officers lie, soldiers die," he said.
On the Aug. 11 call, Yearwood and other leaders kept saying repeatedly that they wanted 9/11 to be used for something "positive," "forward-leaning," and "productive," said a source with knowledge of the teleconference.
The plan is to turn a "day of fear" that helps Republicans into a day of activism called the National Day of Service that helps the left. In other words, nihilistic liberals are planning to drain 9/11 of all meaning.
"They think it needs to be taken back from the right," said the source. "They're taking that day and they're breaking it because it gives Republicans an advantage. To them, that day is a fearful day."
A coalition including the unsavory left-wing pressure group Color of Change and about 60 far-left, environmentalist, labor, and corporate shakedown groups participated in the call. Groups on the call included: ACORN, AFL-CIO, Apollo Alliance, Community Action Partnership, Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, 80 Million Strong for Young American Jobs, Friends of the Earth, Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, Mobilize.org, National Black Police Association, National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, National Council of Negro Women, National Wildlife Federation, RainbowPUSH Coalition, Urban League, and Young Democrats of America.
Color of Change is the extremist racial grievance group that isn't happy that TV's Glenn Beck did several news packages on Van Jones, the self-described "communist" and "rowdy black nationalist" who became the president's green jobs czar after jumping on the environmentalist bandwagon. The White House may be behind a push to destroy Beck by convincing advertisers to stop buying time on his show. Jones was also on the board of the Apollo Alliance, a hard-left environmentalist group that is now running large chunks of the Obama administration. The group has acknowledged that it dictated parts of the February stimulus bill to Congress.
With the help of the Obama administration, the coalition is launching a public relations campaign under the radar of the mainstream media -- which remains almost uniformly terrified of criticizing the nation's first black president -- to try to change 9/11 from a day of reflection and remembrance to a day of activism, food banks, and community gardens.

AN ITALIAN BOY'S CONFESSION
'Bless me Father, for I have sinned.
I have been with a loose girl'.
The priest asks, 'Is that you, little Joey Pagano ?'
'Yes, Father, it is.'
'And who was the girl you were with?'
'I can't tell you, Father. I don't want to ruin her reputation'.
"Well, Joey, I'm sure to find out her name sooner or later so you may as well tell me now. Was it Tina Minetti?'
'I cannot say.'
'Was it Teresa Mazzarelli?'
'I'll never tell.'
'Was it Nina Capelli?'
'I'm sorry, but I cannot name her.'
'Was it Cathy Piriano?'
'My lips are sealed.'
'Was it Rosa DiAngelo, then?'
'Please, Father, I cannot tell you.'
The priest sighs in frustration.
'You're very tight lipped, and I admire that.
But you've sinned and have to atone.
You cannot be an altar boy now for 4 months.
Now you go and behave yourself.'
Joey walks back to his pew, and his friend Franco slides over and whispers,
'What'd you get?'
'Four months vacation and five good leads.'
AARP/Obamacare/Alternatives
Friends,
I am pretty sure that most of you know that AARP is an avid supporter of Obamacare, which in its current form, will ration care especially to senior citizens. Remember that the highest percentage of health care dollars are spent on the older population and the very sick. In order to cut costs, the only way to do so is to cut care to those who use it the most. Ergo, rationing for seniors.
I hope that if you are current member of AARP you have considered going with an alternative group that values freedom and more conservative values. Here is a link to the latest scare tactic from AARP to urge support for Obamacare. There is also a link for American Seniors Association. http://action.afa.net/Videos/Alerts/Default.aspx?id=2147486375
Another group that is an advocate for seniors is http://60plus.org/ I saw the head guy on Fox News a couple of weeks ago. This seems to be a very conservative senior organization.
It is not my intent to try to "make" any of you do anything, but I wanted to make sure that you were aware of alternatives should you desire to quit supporting an organization which is pushing socialized medicine.
Blessings,
Amy
P.S. If you are not a senior, please forward to your friends or family members who are.

Joe,
Can we get everybody’s eyes pointed toward this before Congress goes into session? It is such a refreshingly sensible new start in drafting a health insurance reform bill! (IMHO)
It does 5 things:
1) Gives a tax credit for someone buying a basic plan to $5,000/ year (464/month family)
2) Addresses TORT reform, and limits rewards, litigation time, and provides to fix mistakes.
3) Provides for free trade across state lines for both providers and customers.
4) All “commissioners” or decision boards must be made up of physicians who practice the field they are making decisions in!
5) Stops dependence on TARP funds.
It’s a breath of fresh air to start with, and only 82 pages long!
Remember, the Ten Commandments are 1 sentence each, and have guided mankind well for centuries.
We have already decided to throw the 3200 bill in the trash, and will be chided for not suggesting a positive alternative in an effort from Obama to keep pushing garbage through.

Robot Bartender
The man thought a moment then replied, "A martini please."
The robot clicked a couple of times and mixed the best martini the man had ever tasted.
The robot then asked, "Sir, what is your IQ?"
The man answered, "Oh, about 164."
The robot then proceeded to discuss the 'theory of relativity', 'inter-stellar space travel', 'the latest medical break throughs', etc...
The man was most impressed. He left the bar but thought he would try a different tact. He returned and took a seat.
Again the robot clicked and asked what he would have. "A Martini, please."
Again it was superb. The robot again asked, "What is your IQ, sir?"
This time the man answered, "Oh about 100". So the robot started discussing NASCAR racing, the latest basketball scores, and what to expect the Dodgers to do this weekend.
The guy had to try it one more time. So he left, returned, and took a stool....Again a martini, and the question, "What is your IQ?"
This time the man drawled out "Uh....'bout 50".
The robot clicked then leaned close and very slowly asked,
"A-r-e.....y-o-u-r...p-e-o-p-l-e...h-a-p-p-y...w-i-t-h...O-B-A-M-A?????

A Statement From Dr. John Fredericksen
The upcoming reassignment of three of Wicomico's high school principals has generated interest in how we direct the operations of a large, highly skilled and labor-intensive public organization. I'd like to explain how this reorganization is taking place.
Wicomico is a dynamic school system, not a system of individual schools. It is our goal to maximize student achievement in all areas, at all levels, and at all schools.
To achieve this at the county level, this requires a more global view. With ever-changing needs and circumstances, we are constantly evaluating and planning for the best use of our individual administrators and their specific leadership skills. This helps us create benefits for all students, parents, guardians, and staff. To do this, we must have the ability to move people to match needs and skill sets. Our goal is to deliver an optimal set of services for everyone with a focus on student success.
As detailed in Wednesday's announcement of appointments and transfers, this same process of matching administrators with schools is also taking place at the elementary level.
We review all assignments every year to see that we have the right people in the right places within the system. We regularly move administrators, assistants, custodians, nurses, teachers, and other staff as needed. The superintendent is authorized to carry this out under Md. Code Ann., Ed. Art. 6-201(b). This is one of the most important actions of the superintendent, and it is a responsibility carried out with significant input from key administrative staff and other resources.
I take the responsibility of the operation of this school system very seriously. As a team, we have worked long and hard to make this the very best decision possible, but in the end, it's under my signature. I believe our students will be best served in the 2009-10 school year with some of our school administrators in new assignments.
The rationale for transfer of staff is much like the rationale for initial placement of a staff person. We consider a variety of data points including program needs, enrollment changes, transfer requests, and promotions. In addition, we strive to provide opportunities for professional growth through a variety of experiences and training. All of this is essential to effective succession planning.
When considering a transfer from the school perspective, we look at site needs, staff skills, individual gifts and graces, the global view of superintendent and executive staff, staff/site fit, size of school, scope of programs, levels of challenge, and leadership team diversity (cultural and gender).
All the principals and assistant principals who are moving have given us strong, enthusiastic, positive responses ensuring that they will work to the very best of their abilities to make the 2009-10 school year the very best that it can be for students. I have confidence in all of our administrators and their ability to lead each school to higher levels of student success.
We have planned for an orderly and collaborative transition at these high schools. Teams from each school and the central office will be working diligently over the summer to fully examine and analyze school specific year end student data and identify what is working and what is not. We are also working at the system level to the best of our ability to provide the support needed to help make this happen.
There are already several "leadership academies" planned this summer to examine ways to maximize individual student achievement and provide a safe, orderly and welcoming environment for all students.
By early August, you will receive information from your school's principal outlining these opportunities and plans and how you can provide input, leadership and support as a valued community member.

Thank you to all of our administrators and all of our staff members for their dedication and service to the students of Wicomico County Public Schools.
My Name Is Rose
I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.
She said, 'Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?'
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, 'Of course you may!' and she gave me a giant squeeze.
'Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?' I asked.
She jokingly replied, 'I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids...'
'No seriously,' I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
'I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!' she told me.
After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake.
We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this 'time machine' as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went... She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor.
Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, 'I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.'
As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, ' We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.
There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.
We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it!
There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.
If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight.
Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets.
The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.'
She concluded her speech by courageously singing 'The Rose.'
She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago.
One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep..
Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.
