White Marlin Open Begins Tomorrow in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, MD — Offshore fishing is red hot in Ocean City, and White Marlin Open directors are looking forward to an action-packed tournament. The marlin season in Ocean City started with an early bang when the first white was caught on May 29, breaking the old record of June 1. Fishing has only gotten better with large numbers of white marlin, blue marlin, tuna and gaffer dolphin being caught. Lots of fish always make for an exciting White Marlin Open and with over 300 boats and $2.25 million in prize money expected, it is guaranteed not to disappoint.

This year’s event is rapidly approaching with fishing taking place the week of August 8-12. Boats may enter through Sunday August 7. Charter boats and boat slips are still available.

Voted by readers of In The Bite magazine as the tournament they would most like to fish, the White Marlin Open is a billfish tournament you don’t want to miss. As stated in Marlin Magazine, “With solid fishing and huge payouts, it’s tough to compete with the White Marlin Open.”

Work to Begin on OC Convention Center Expansion

OCEAN CITY, MD - Construction of the long-discussed expansion of the Ocean City convention center is expected to begin next week.

Convention Center Director Rick Hamilton and Mayor Rick Meehan went to Annapolis Wednesday to receive the final approval from the state Board of Public Works on the construction contract. The state, through the Maryland Stadium Authority, is a partner in the facility, so it must approve all contracts.

“It’s already been negotiated, so I think it will be a formality,” Hamilton said of the state approval.

Once the approval is in hand, construction can begin. Hamilton said the contractor is “waiting to start” on Monday.

Councilmen Offer Varying Views on Visitor Retention

OCEAN CITY, MD - A discussion over how to thank visitors for coming to Ocean City became a thankless business at Tuesday’s City Council meeting, as members mixed it up in a dispute over marketing.

Councilmen Brent Ashley and Joe Hall have pushed for the city to create and distribute silicone wristbands with the city’s Web site printed inside. They suggested that local businesses buy the wristbands at cost and give them to patrons and the special Web site will take visitors to a survey where they have a chance to win an Ocean City trip.

Some other council members have said that is not the best way to say thank you, because people might throw away the wristbands or not visit the Web site. Having businesses offer top-notch customer service is the best way to make visitors happy and wanting to return, they said.

Dew Tour Sets Attendance Record in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, MD — The Dew Tour’s inaugural stop in Ocean City saw the highest attendance numbers of any of the tour’s events since its first in 2005, and it is being touted as a resounding success by resort and tour officials.

An estimated 73,000 people came through the Pantech Open’s Boardwalk entrance during the four-day-long event, setting an attendance record, and Demoflush statistics — culled from the number of times toilets are flushed in town — estimate a figure of more than 320,000 were in town during the weekend, a 7 percent increase over last year’s corresponding dates.

“We really couldn’t have been happier with the event, and that’s a sentiment from everbody involved,” said Dew Tour General Manager Chris Prybylo. “It was just packed from start to finish, and we certainly had great success with everything we were able to control.”

Ocean City Council Debates TimberSIL Lumber Claims

OCEAN CITY - When Ocean City’s Boardwalk gets its fresh new boards this fall, it will be for a new low price.

The Ocean City Council on Monday voted to grant Baltimore-based Grasmick Lumber the contract to supply more than 56,000 planks of wood for the reconstruction of the Boardwalk, which will begin in October. Grasmick has supplied wood for the Boardwalk in the past, but City Engineer Terry McGean said the deal before the council was “a historically low” bid, which came in at $602,650.

“In 1990, we paid 54 cents a foot for deck lumber. In 2008, we paid 84 cents per foot. The bid price today is 52 cents per foot,” McGean said.

The glasswood company TimberSIL was also granted a contract to supply approximately $40,000 of wood treated with new technology that would be used on one block of the Boardwalk to test its claims of durability and longevity.

Berlin Planning Commissioner Ron Cascio, who is also a builder, spoke to the council about the potential benefits of using the new product.

“If we got half of the wood lifespan that TimberSIL claims, which would be [20-40 years] instead of eight to 10 that is standard in our experience, that would save costs on longevity,” Cascio said. “It’s a new product, but in their North Carolina yard it has been under severe stress testing.”

Ocean City Mayor Completes Media Tour

OCEAN CITY, MD – Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan traveled to Baltimore and Washington recently to connect with Ocean City visitors. The Mayor appeared live on WBAL-TV’s (NBC 11, Baltimore) popular Sunday Morning show on Sunday, July 10 and completed a media tour of Washington D.C., on Monday, July 11. The Mayor promoted Ocean City vacation deals and upcoming events such as The Dew Tour during his radio and TV interviews.

In Washington, D.C., the Mayor made three morning media appearances at WTOP-FM, WMAL-AM, and WRC-NBC 4. The trip marked the third media tour of 2011 and a first visit to the capital region this summer.

“More and more Washingtonians are making Ocean City their summer vacation destination of choice due to our town’s affordability and proximity,” Mayor Meehan said. “By visiting these regional TV and radio stations, we are able to remind folks that there is plenty of time to get to Ocean City this summer and experience all we have to offer.”

During the tour, the Mayor highlighted events such as the Dew Tour, Disney’s “Sizzlin Summer of Stars” concert series, other free family events and the Ocean City Free for All promotion. All media tours are organized by the town’s agency, MGH, and coordinated by Donna Abbott, Communications Manager for the Town of Ocean City.

Economic Impact of DEW Tour

The question any number of people are asking as the Dew Tour competition heats up in downtown Ocean City is what kind of economic impact this national-scale event will generate.

The short answer is more than most people realize. It is expected to net the city at least $6 million worth of advertising spots, attract a minimum of 10,000 tourists and garner hours of live television coverage, according to Chris Prybylo, vice president of events with Alli, Alliance of Action Sports, the company organizing the four-day Pantech Open.

When the Dew Tour was in Baltimore in 2008, more than 52,500 fans packed Camden Yards parking lot. It generated approximately $10 million in economic impact. During the inaugural year, 2005, the event drew more than 55,000 fans.

Former Destroyer to Be Sunk for Artificial Reef

With almost every regulatory hurdle cleared, planners believe they are about two weeks away from sinking a 563-foot former Navy destroyer off the coast of Maryland to create the largest artificial reef on the Eastern Seaboard.

The Arthur W. Radford, docked in Philadelphia, is nearing the end of a laborious effort to remove all salvageable and toxic material and pass inspection by federal environmental and maritime safety officials, Erik Zlokovitz, artificial reef coordinator for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources told a state fisheries advisory commission Tuesday night.

Today, marine salvage teams from Virginia-based American Marine Group are expected to remove the massive propellers, one of the final steps in creating a hulking structure that will serve as home for fish and crustaceans.

Zlokovitz told the Sportfish Advisory Commission that planners have targeted the first week in August for the sinking of the Radford.

Drunken Boater Crashes Vessel Into Jetty

The operator of a sportsfishing boat was charged with drunken boating after he crashed his 36-foot vessel into the rock jetty at the Ocean City inlet last Thursday.

According to Maryland Natural Resources Police Sgt. Art Windemuth, the custom boat, Anger Management, struck the south jetty off the northern tip of Assateague Island around 10 p.m. Aboard the vessel were the owner and operator, Earnest J. Kasner of Belle Harbor, N.Y., and a mate.

The Coast Guard sent boats to the scene from its Ocean City station as did the NRP. Kasner and the mate were picked up by the Coast Guard and Kasner was taken by ambulance to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin with non-life threatening injuries, Windemuth said. The mate was not injured.

Tuna Plentiful As Maryland Tournament Begins

As the Ocean City Tuna Tournament gets under way, the right blend of ocean temperatures have drawn yellowfin and bluefin species in great numbers, fishermen and scientists say.

That's good news for anglers who will compete for hefty cash prizes during the fishing tournament, which begins today. Last year, the boat bringing in the heaviest total weight received $162,000, and the boat hooking the single heaviest tuna -- at 79 pounds -- received $64,000.

At this time of year, bluefin tuna often head north for colder seas, but swaths of cold water have kept them near Ocean City, said Marty Gary, the assistant director and fisheries ecologist for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Service. The opposite is true for yellowfin tuna, which are enjoying warmer water from the Gulf jet stream, farther out at sea, he said.
