OC Drawbridge Back To Regular Schedule
Mayor Rick Meehan
After working throughout the night and into the morning, SHA crews officially completed the necessary repairs to the drawbridge. As of 12:15 p.m., complications to the bridge were fully restored and the drawbridge is now operating under the regularly scheduled opening and closing time period. Thank you all for your patience and understanding during what we know was a very frustrating time for our residents and visitors.

A Thank You Letter From Hamas to the Media
Dear Members of the Mainstream Media,
You’ve been awesome! Everyone knows that we start unwinnable wars with Israel because the real victory happens when you predictably side with us each time. And you’ve been so supportive of our strategy that we really want to acknowledge your helpfulness. In particular, we thank you for:
-Focusing so much more on our suffering than anyone else’s. Nigerians must die in far greater numbers before you take notice, so we’re glad that you value our lives so much more.
-Minimizing your coverage, if any, of our attacks that led up to Israel’s military response and generally providing so little context that outsiders think that Israelis kill Palestinians just for fun. We’re especially grateful to the French media for this. Their distortions of the conflict are so one-sided that they incite Muslims across France to attack Jews and synagogues, and that is welcomed by our anti-Semitic worldview (although, unfortunately, such attacks remind everyone why Jews need a state).

Prosecutor’s Probe Finds Fatal Shooting ‘Justified’
SALISBURY — The Wicomico County State’s Attorney’s Office this week announced an investigation into the shooting death of a Salisbury man by Maryland State Police troopers in March was justified under the circumstances and no charges will be filed against the officers.
Around 8:15 p.m. on March 18, Winfield C. Fisher, 32, of Salisbury, entered the MSP Salisbury barrack and asked the duty officer, Cpl. Anthony Myers, to check a vehicle repair after he had received a safety equipment repair order. During what was otherwise a routine task completed several times throughout most days at the MSP barrack, Myers noticed the strong odor of marijuana coming from Fisher’s person and even from the paper repair order he had just slid under the window.
Myers later testified he questioned Fisher about the odor of marijuana and asked if he could search him. Fisher agreed and the search of his person revealed nothing, but Fisher became increasingly agitated, sweated profusely and had his pulse visibly accelerated, according to Myer’s testimony.

Wicomico County Needs Community Feedback About Comcast Cable Service
In order to best ascertain community needs and interests related to cable television service from Comcast, Wicomico County is conducting a community needs assessment as part of the cable franchise renewal process. This includes a random sample written survey of County residents beginning this month.
If a household receives a survey, the County requests that the resident take the brief amount of time needed to respond to the survey questions. Because the surveys are administered randomly, each response is especially important. All information gathered from households will only be reported as a group and all individual responses will be anonymous. Participation in this process will help the County effectively represent the community as it works to ensure quality cable television service for its residents. The County encourages its residents to participate in this important effort!

WBOC Tells Viewers to threaten Direct TV
WBOC is asking viewers to call Direct TV and tell them if they drop WBOC you will drop Direct TV.
SERIOUSLY? I have Direct TV and TRUST ME, the $2.00 fee per month is NOT a large expense, (for ALL local stations) as WBOC suggests. Even Craig Jahelka states it only cost their viewers a few cents per day.
NO, we will NOT call Direct TV to save WBOC's, well, you know what. I will not threaten Direct TV as I am NOT a follower. Yes, I truly enjoy Football and NCIS but come on now, there are other channels that carry the games and programs.
If you want to fall for this crud simply because WBOC needs you, call WBOC and tell them that IF they want to pay your local fee each month, fine. If not, you'll drop WBOC.
Remember, WBOC makes a small fortune on commercials and THAT is why they need you. No, I do NOT feel sorry for WBOC. You have to PAY to PLAY.

You Make The Call
So you're leaving Home Depot or WalMart in Berlin heading to Ocean City. You come up to the light, (1st picture) and there's a traffic light, (red) with an arrow pointing towards Rt. 50 East.
There's a merge lane, (2nd picture). The law in Maryland is right turn on red and there is NO sign stating "no right turn on red".
Do you make a right turn on the red arrows?
A Letter To The Editor: WBOC and Fox 21 (DIRECTV)
I came across your name and online publication based upon this story you’d written a while back.
http://sbynews.blogspot.com/2011/10/craig-jahelka-vp-general-manager-of.html
I’m not overly familiar with the Delmarva community, but I wanted you to be aware of this current situation potentially affecting local TV viewers:
http://www.delmarvanow.com/story/news/local/maryland/2014/07/25/wboc-fox-directv/13166357/?sf28998680=1
I work with DIRECTV on several matters surrounding our customers. You’ll see me quoted in this story, and once I saw that you write for the local community, I wanted to help augment any information you may not find for yourself on www.directvpromise.com.
For your background (rather than any direct quotes), what’s at issue is quite simple.
Neither DIRECTV or any other cable, satellite or telco media provider can offer ANY local broadcast station without that station’s express and legal consent.
But the law also specifically prevents DIRECTV or any other cable, satellite or telco media provider from NOT providing a local broadcast station into the community.
We must provide the station, and yet we also must have their consent.
So what’s now occurring right now is that WBOC and Fox 21 are threatening to withdraw their consent unless we obligate local DIRECTV customers to pay seven times more for the same shows they receive today for seven times less.
And don’t forget, they’re also available for free over-the-air, and their own networks make the best series available for free online via cbs.com and fox.com too.
I’m sure either you or I might welcome our own salary soaring seven-times over. I’m just not sure we’d be able to convince our neighbors to actually pay for it. Heck, you and I might even argue it’s justified or “fair” simply because you or I are the only ones who ought to decide whether we’re entitled to receive it.
I have no beef with WBOC or Fox 21 saying they deserve a seven times bonus.
But where we do have an issue is any station trying to rationalize such an overt entitlement by intentionally misleading their most loyal viewers into believing DIRECTV somehow poses a threat.
We cannot and will not remove either station from any local DIRECTV customers’ line-up. Period. Only WBOC or Fox 21 can do that.
So if the two stations truly believe they are worth seven times more than they are this moment, that they are seven times more popular, seven times better, seven times more trustworthy to Delmarva, they’re welcome to make that case.
Just don’t use your own newscasts and the trappings of true journalism to tell people to undermine their own interests to serve the same station’s financial interest.
Once upon a time, a general manager would go on the air with a nice suit or sweater and make a case for his own opinion. And people watching were clearly informed of that.
Maybe WBOC and Fox 21 just missed that class…or are willing to ignore it.
People Changing Clothes At OC Comfort Stations Causing Problems
OCEAN CITY – City officials have recognized that long waits at Boardwalk restrooms during peak times are a result of people utilizing the stalls as makeshift changing rooms.
During Monday evening’s Mayor and City Council legislative session, Recreation and Parks Commission Chair Councilman Joe Mitrecic included in his report of last week’s commission meeting that staff suggested adding port-a-potties to the Boardwalk when expecting larger crowds in town, such as on the 4th of July.
“There was talk about on the 4th of July the attendance was so great downtown that we have to possibly think about putting in some port-a-pots as our restroom facilities are overwhelmed, and it puts an additional onus on the Boardwalk properties and storefronts to use their bathrooms, and it just starts to get out of control,” Mitrecic said.

Snoop Dogg Talks About That Time He Got High At The White House
To here Snoop Dogg tell it, the White House has gone to pot. At least once when he was there.
While on his internet talk show "Double G News Network" with Jimmy Kimmel, Snoop told about the time he got high at the White House.
Kimmel: "Have you ever smoked at the White House?"
Snoop: "In the bathroom. Not in the White House, but in the bathroom."
We're pretty sure that qualifies as being in the White House.
But it gets stranger. To hear Snoop tell the story, if you use the bathroom there, you have to publicly declare your intent before entering. Kind of like pulling a Republican or Democratic ballot in a primary.
Here's how he said it went down:

My Son Has Been Suspended Five Times. He’s 3.
Black families fight entrenched prejudices to get fair discipline for their children in schools.
I received a call from my sons’ school in March telling me that my oldest needed to be picked up early. He had been given a one-day suspension because he had thrown a chair. He did not hit anyone, but he could have, the school officials told me.
JJ was 4 at the time.
I agreed his behavior was inappropriate, but I was shocked that it resulted in a suspension.
For weeks, it seemed as if JJ was on the chopping block. He was suspended two more times, once for throwing another chair and then for spitting on a student who was bothering him at breakfast. Again, these are behaviors I found inappropriate, but I did not agree with suspension.

BREAKING NEWS: HOY TO STAY AT WOR-WIC
All,
I have informed the Boards of Delaware Technical Community College and Wor-Wic Community College that after much personal deliberation, I have decided to decline the offer to become the next president of Delaware Tech.
The Delaware public meetings law led to a process where the Board had to make a public selection and announcement before candid conversations, expectations, and agreements could be developed with the selected candidate. Unfortunately, we were unable to reach consensus on the terms of employment. I regret the disruption that this has caused both institutions.
I have nothing but respect Delaware Tech, its Board and employees, many of whom I had the pleasure of meeting during the search process. It is an impressive institution with talented employees who work effectively to serve the education and training needs of all Delawareans. In fact, the greatest compliment I can give them is that they remind me, a great deal, of us.
I am sure this raises questions with you regarding my status at Wor-Wic. I have spoken individually with each Wor-Wic Board member and they have all welcomed me in my continuing role at the college. One of the reasons that the Wor-Wic Board did not meet last Thursday in the Special Session was because I had not yet submitted a letter of resignation. Without that to act upon, there was no reason for them to meet. The meeting this Friday is canceled as well, since the only purpose was to develop a transition plan.
I reached this decision with the total support of my family. Through this process and the introspection that takes place when one contemplates such an important change, I have come to realize that I belong here. As I emphasized when I wrote to you about my decision to participate in this search, I continue to be committed to the success of Wor-Wic.
This has already been enough of a distraction. I’d like to put this behind us, and with your help and support, focus on moving Wor-Wic forward. I promise that you, our students and the college, have my complete attention and dedication.

‘We’re Coming For You, Barack Obama’: Top U.S. Official Discloses Threat From ISIL
High-ranking U.S. officials said Wednesday that not only are Sunni radicals with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant “worse than al Qaeda,” but that the group has a message for the president: “We’re coming for you, Barack Obama.”
Brett McGurk, the deputy assistant secretary of state, told lawmakers at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing that ISIL may have “changed its name,” but that it’s still al Qaeda.
“In fact, it is worse than al Qaeda,” he said, The Hill reported.
Elissa Slotkin, the acting principal deputy undersecretary of Defense for policy, added that ISIL also has its eye on the president, threatening “We’re coming for you, Barack Obama,” The Hill reported.

Ben Carson on Illegals: 'Remove the Goodies,' Charge Employers Who Hire Illegals
Dr. Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon and the author of six best-selling books, said the way to curtail illegal immigration is to reduce the incentive to come to the United States by removing “all the goodies,” and particularly by charging employers who hire illegal aliens, for a second time, with a “criminal offense.”
Currently, employers who hire illegal immigrants can face a variety of fines, ranging from $200 to $2,000 per illegal worker on a first offense, and $2000-$5000 on a second offense. For a third offense or more, the fines can range from $3,000 to $10,000 per employee.
In remarks at the Western Conservative Summit on July 19, Dr. Carson touched on illegal immigration, saying, “You have to reduce the incentive for people to want to come here. That’s how you fix the problem. I guarantee you that if you remove all the goodies, people will find a way to get out of here just like they found a way to get in here.”

A Letter To The Editor, "Homeless"
Dear Joe, were you aware that at the present time there is no where in this community to go if you are a homeless man for shelter? The Christian Shelter is where the men normally go. It has been under renovation since March. There was an article in the paper about the homeless Sunday and not to give them money but to donate to the shelters and to send them there. Which I totally agree with but my question is why doesn't the community know that there is not shelter at the moment and why is there a temporary place for them to go until the Christian shelter is complete? The homeless men could be actually helping to get it ready. Every time I call to see if it is open they say not yet maybe in two weeks the painters didn't come today or there are a few little things that need to be done. The reason this whole situation bothers me so much is I have come in contact with a young man who is disabled, not on drugs , doesn't suffer from mental illness but was taking advantage of by the system and has lost his ssi money. He gets Temporary Disability which is $185 a month . There is no place in this town that will take him. To Stay in a motel it's at least $219 a month. We have tried to get help through social services, health dept., Joseph House, Mac Independent living, shore up, Dors and some low income rentals. He just needs a room. The best we could find was $300 a month. We even tried some church's . They weren't aware of this situation. This young man so desperately wants to be a productive citizen. He has no criminal background and is volunteering at the hospital . There may not be many out there like this but be has certainly made e aware of how broken our system is. I'm all about missions and helping people but please start with your own community.

Obama says Biden would make 'superb' president
(Reuters) - President Barack Obama said Joe Biden would make a "superb" president, but questioned whether his vice president or potential rival Hillary Clinton would want to endure another campaign for the White House, a media report on Monday said.
Obama, in an interview with the New Yorker, said Biden "has seen the job up close, he knows what the job entails. He understands how to separate what’s really important from what’s less important. I think he’s got great people skills. He enjoys politics, and he’s got important relationships up on the Hill (in Congress) that would serve him well."
"Joe would be a superb president," Obama told the magazine in an article on Biden in its July 28 issue, which was published online on Monday.

Duck Dynasty’s Missy: We Were Virgins Until Marriage – No Baggage, No Diseases, and God Recommended It
Duck Dynasty’sMissy Robertson said she “definitely recommends” chastity before marriage and added that she and her husband, Jase Robertson, maintained their virginity until their wedding night and, in this way, they “have no baggage, we have no diseases,” and “God recommended” such self-discipline for couples “many, many moons ago.”
Missy Robertson also said the highly popular Duck Dynasty television program was an opportunity that God provided to the Robertson family to spread a pro-family, pro-Christian message – “a way for us to get that message out” – stressing that the family hopes “to appeal to people, so they can want to learn more about this Jesus, who is this character, and why our family works, why are we not broken apart?”
At a Capitol Hill event to raise awareness about children born with cleft palates and lips – a condition the Robertson’s daughter, Mia, was born with – CNSNews.com, in an exclusive interview, asked Missy Robertson, “In your husband’s book, Good Call, he talks about your courtship and how the both of you maintained your virginity before you were married. And I wanted to know if you would recommend that for all young couples and, if so, what specific advice or counsel could you give to young folks today who are considering getting married and are trying to stay chaste before marriage?”

The Gallatin facility is scheduled to be opened in mid-2015. Beretta U.S.A. had previously planned to use the new Gallatin, Tennessee facility for new machinery and production of new products only.
“During the legislative session in Maryland that resulted in passage of the Firearm Safety Act of 2013, the version of the statute that passed the Maryland Senate would have prohibited Beretta U.S.A. from being able to manufacture, store or even import into the State products that we sell to customers throughout the United States and around the world. While we were able in the Maryland House of Delegates to reverse some of those obstructive provisions, the possibility that such restrictions might be reinstated in the future leaves us very worried about the wisdom of maintaining a firearm manufacturing factory in the State,” stated Jeff Cooper, General Manager for Beretta U.S.A. Corp.
“While we had originally planned to use the Tennessee facility for new equipment and for production of new product lines only, we have decided that it is more prudent from the point of view of our future welfare to move the Maryland production lines in their entirety to the new Tennessee facility,” Cooper added.
The transition of production from Beretta U.S.A.’s Maryland facility to the Tennessee facility will not occur until 2015 and will be managed so as not to disrupt deliveries to Beretta customers. Beretta U.S.A.’s production of the U.S. Armed Forces M9 9mm pistol will continue at the Accokeek, Maryland facility until all current orders from the U.S. Armed Forces have been filled.
“We have not yet begun groundbreaking on the Tennessee facility and we do not anticipate that that building will be completed until the middle part of 2015,” continued Cooper. “That timing, combined with our need to plan an orderly transition of production from one facility to the other so that our delivery obligations to customers are not disrupted, means that no Beretta U.S.A. Maryland employee will be impacted by this news for many months. More importantly, we will use this time to meet with every Beretta U.S.A. employee whose Maryland job might be affected by the move to discuss with them their interest in taking a position at our new facility in Tennessee or, if they are not willing to do so, to lay out a long-term strategy for remaining with the Company while our production in Maryland continues.”
Beretta U.S.A. anticipates that the Gallatin, Tennessee facility will involve $45 million of investment in building and equipment and the employment of around 300 employees during the next five years.
Beretta U.S.A. has no plans to relocate its office, administrative and executive support functions from its Accokeek, Maryland facility.

Rockville Couple Charged With Locking Up Twin Sons With Autism In Dungeon-like Basement
ROCKVILLE, Md. (WJLA) – Police have arrested a Rockville couple for allegedly keeping their 22-year-old twin sons, who have autism, in a dungeon-like enclosure in the basement of their home.
John Land, 57, and Janice Land, 59, are each charged with two counts of vulnerable adult abuse and attempted false imprisonment.
Around 5 a.m. Thursday, the Montgomery County Special Investigations Division stormed the Lands’ modest home along the 1600 block of Crawford Drive. Once inside, officers discovered the locked chamber housing both boys.
According to charging documents filed in Montgomery County District Court, police noticed an "overwhelming smell of urine coming from the room." There was no furniture for either brother to sit or sleep on, just a comforter covering the hard tile floor. There was also neither working electricity, nor smoke or carbon monoxide detectors. A tiny window was the only means of light, far too small for the 22-year-olds to crawl through in the case of an emergency, detectives say.

CDC: Only 1.6% of Americans Identify as Gay or Lesbian
Contrary to popular belief, just 1.6 percent of American adults identify as homosexual, compared to 96.6 percent who say they are heterosexual, according to a large-scale, first-of-its-kind government survey recently released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
In 2011, a Gallup survey found that 52 percent of Americans believed that 25 percent of the population was either gay or lesbian. Only 4 percent of people surveyed at that time thought that the homosexual population was less than 5 percent.
The CDC survey also found that 0.7 percent of adults, less than 1 percent, consider themselves bisexual. Another 1.1 percent identified as “something else,” stated “I don’t know the answer,” or refused to provide an answer.

Barack Obama on D.C. statehood: ‘I’m for it’
Another D.C. resident has voiced his support for statehood: President Barack Obama.
“I’m in D.C., so I’m for it,” the president said Monday at an event in Washington, according to The DCist.
“I think I’ve long believed that D.C. pays — folks in D.C. pay taxes like everybody else. They contribute to the overall well-being of the country like everybody else. They should be represented [in Congress] like everybody else,” Obama said. “And it’s not as if Washington, D.C., is not big enough compared to other states. There has been a long movement to get D.C. statehood, and I’ve been for it for quite some time.”

Baltimore Residents React To Stricter Curfew
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — In just a few weeks, Baltimore City will have the toughest curfew laws in the country and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is hoping to set the records straight on all that the law entails.
Rochelle Ritchie has more on the new law and whether residents think it will work.
The mayor is hoping this new law will not only keep kids safe but also expose those families who are in need of critical parental guidance.
Mob scenes like one in Fells Point may be avoided as Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake pushes for more control of the city’s youth, with stricter curfews set to take affect next month.

O'Malley Meeting With Religious Leaders On Immigrant Housing
Governor Martin O’Malley is asking religious leaders to come to Annapolis Monday to discuss housing for some of the thousands of children and teens coming into the U.S. illegally from Central America.
After criticizing the White House for taking steps to deport these children, and then telling White House officials not to house them at an old Army Reserve Center in Westminster, the governor said that he is willing to have some of these children housed in Maryland.
Last week, the governor told WBAL News that Maryland has an obligation to house some of these children.

Peggy Naleppa Named One of Maryland’s Most Admired CEOs for 2014
Peninsula Regional Medical Center President/CEO Peggy Naleppa, MS, MBA, Dr.M, FACHE, was today named among Maryland’s 30 Most Admired CEOs for 2014. Dr. Naleppa was also a recipient of this award in 2012. She is one of just seven Maryland CEOs honored in the category of “Non-profits with More than $10 Million in Annual Revenue” and is the Eastern Shore’s lone recipient.
Created by The Daily Record, a Baltimore-based business newspaper, the award highlights some of the most notably talented CEOs leading the state’s nonprofit, for profit and public companies. 2014′s Most Admired CEOs were selected based on their demonstration of strong leadership, vision, competitiveness and innovation, community service, commitment to financial performance and excellence, growth, corporate leadership, board service and nonprofit involvement.
“Being named a Most Admired CEO takes more than in-depth knowledge about running a company or organization. It requires an extraordinary level of drive and ambition because it is a tremendously challenging job,” said Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, Publisher of The Daily Record. “They have learned the value of surrounding themselves with great team members, with leaders and employees who believe in the organization’s core values and mission.”
