BERLIN – A highly contested mayoral race highlights this fall’s municipal election in Berlin.
With the filing deadline last Friday, the field is now set for the town’s Oct. 6 election. Five candidates are vying for the position of mayor and there are contested races for two of the three council positions up for grabs. There is, however, still time for write-in candidates to file.
“People have until Sept. 29 to file as a write-in candidate,” said Mary Bohlen, deputy town administrator. “They will not appear on the ballot.”
Candidates for mayor on this year’s ballot include Jennifer Allen, Ron Bireley, Bill Todd, Zack Tyndall and incumbent Gee Williams.

Candace Owens and Cardi B are locked in a nasty spat — with the rapper accusing the conservative pundit of having an “identity crisis” because she’s married to a white man.
The Bronx-raised”WAP” rapper slammed Owens on Instagram Monday, claiming the commentator’s English husband, George Farmer, is part of the “upper-class KKK in the United Kingdom,” Fox News reported.
“She has an identity crisis. Just because she’s black, doesn’t mean she give a f— about blacks,” Cardi B says in the Instagram story.
Owens shot back that Cardi, who did not show her face in the post, must be hiding because “she is reading a script.”

The coronavirus has been a huge setback for just about everyone. Except cybercriminals. The FBI reported a fourfold increase in daily online crime complaints in the months following the start of the pandemic compared to before it, reports Government Technology contributor Daniel Castro. It's easy to see why this is happening.
“Many individuals are working from home for the first time, so the traditional approach of keeping untrusted devices off organizations’ networks is ill-suited for the new wave of threats from unpatched home computers running on unsecure home networks," he writes. "In addition, with staff no longer working in proximity to one another, employees are more susceptible to phishing attacks because they are less likely to confirm a suspicious email with a colleague or have access to in-person IT support." Finally, with more activities moving online, IT has become mission-critical, which means organizations are more willing to pay ransomware attackers so that their systems remain operational.
While any individual, government or business is a potential victim, school systems are particularly vulnerable, according to Castro, who spells out why. First, schools have been a ripe target for criminals. The education sector accounted for 60 percent of all reported enterprise malware in June. Second, schools continue to rely on old technology, such as Microsoft Windows 7, which is no longer supported by the firm, meaning users no longer receive vital security patches, leaving them exposed to possible attacks. Third, schools must support many inexperienced users. Both educators and students are often unfamiliar with many of the online tools they are now using for distance learning. Passenger reportedly kicked off plane after telling flight attendant to wear mask
Passengers aboard an Allegiant Air plane reacted in disbelief when a man was kicked off the flight after apparently telling a flight attendant to wear a face mask, according to a report.
“I just asked somebody to put on their face mask,” the man is heard saying Monday in a viral video shot by a fellow passenger on the tarmac in Punta Gorda, Florida, Newsweek reported.
The footage shows an airline employee — who is wearing a mask — repeatedly telling the man, whom she refers to as “Mr. Peterman,” to get off the plane.
“Either you come off or I get the law enforcement,” she tells him to the amazement of other passengers.
“You are totally wrong,” one flier says to the woman. “This is ridiculous,” says another.

Georgia authorities reveal 1,000 people double-voted in primary
As many as 1,000 Georgians double-voted in the Peach State’s June 9 primary using absentee ballots, a felony that is punishable by up to a decade in prison, state authorities announced Tuesday.
The revelation comes as President Trump warns of widespread voter fraud ahead of the November election, which he believes could happen through the mass harvesting of mail-in ballots amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said 1,000 voters returned absentee ballots before turning up at the polling booth to vote on election day, according to a report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Approximately 150,000 people who requested absentee ballots still showed up at polling booths, either because they never received a paper ballot or changed their mind about voting in person, the report said.

The footage shows an unidentified man pulling bag after bag of mail out of the back of a Budget rental truck under the cover of night and leaving it in a pile at the edge of the lot, CNN said in a report Tuesday.
“It was completely unusual,” Lilia Serobian, who owns 7Q Spa Laser & Aesthetics, which owns the lot, told the network. “It’s suspicious. You start thinking, ‘OK, something is going on,’ because no one has access to all those boxes and packages.”
The video of the Sept. 3 mail dump, which was also aired by KTLA-TV, is one of two piles of dumped mail found in the California city that day.

Lungs ravaged by COVID-19 can repair themselves in three months, a new study says.
Nearly half of patients who had been hospitalized for the virus showed no evidence of lung damage at 12 weeks, according to preliminary findings presented at the European Respiratory Society International Congress.
The study, which has not been published yet, looked at 86 patients hospitalized in the Tyrolean region of Austria between April 29 and June 9.
Researchers from the University Clinic in Innsbruck then followed up at six and 12 weeks after discharge for evaluation.
Following their first visit, 88% of patients showed evidence of lung damage, but this number dropped to 56% by their next check-up, the study said.

The Rochester Police Department’s “entire command staff” announced their retirement on Tuesday, the mayor there said, amid raging protests over the death of Daniel Prude, the black man who was killed while being subdued by city cops while he suffered an apparent breakdown.
Chief La’Ron Singletary, a 20-year veteran of the force, and Deputy Chief Joseph Morabito, who served the department for 34 years, released statements moments before a scheduled briefing with Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren and the City Council about last night’s demonstrations.
During the meeting, Warren told council members that “the entire Rochester Police Department’s command staff has announced their retirement,” adding that Deputy Chief Mark Simmons was also stepping down.
“There may be a number of others who will decide to leave as well and retire,” Warren warned.

“I was going to school like students should be going to school,” Maverick Stow, 17-year-old student at William Floyd High School, explained to WABC of why he attended in-person classes on the first day of school.
“I think that a five-day suspension is out of line,” Stow, who has the support of his parents, told the outlet.
Stow said trouble first arose when his first-period teacher noticed he wasn’t on Tuesday’s in-person roster.
The teacher sent Stow to the principal’s office and he was asked to report home.

New York’s cash-strapped MTA could be down another $500 million thanks to FEMA’s “baffling” and “reckless” decision to cut COVID-19 funding for mass transit, transit chief Pat Foye fumed Tuesday.
“The MTA’s overall COVID-related expense estimate is approximately $500 million for 2020 alone, with similarly substantial totals projected for the next four years,” Foye wrote in a letter to Federal Emergency Management Agency leader Pete Gaynor.
“[These expenses] are inextricably linked to the pandemic and efforts to minimize public health risk during this critical time, and would not be necessary otherwise,” he said.
“Denying that public health reality smacks of not only ignorance but incompetence.”
More than 130 MTA employees have died from COVID-19. Officials have in turn distributed millions of masks to both employees and riders, and disinfected trains and buses daily.
But the rule change set for Sept. 15 prohibits COVID-19 funding for the virus-safe operation of mass transit, schools and other public facilities because they “are not immediate actions necessary to protect public health and safety.”

Cops this week released a mugshot of Clara Kraebber — the wealthy Upper East Sider busted during a costly night of rioting in Manhattan last week — along with images of six of her alleged comrades.

Twice-Elected Dem Sheriff Switches to GOP: Dems Fail To Acknowledge God and Burn the Flag
A Democratic sheriff in Indiana has publicly abandoned his party just two months ahead of the November election, and he cited his faith and attacks from members of his former party on law enforcement and the American flag on the way out.
Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding announced the switch last week outside of a business in Evansville while in the presence of Indiana Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, a Republican.
The Evansville Courier & Press reported Wedding was elected sheriff as a Democrat in 2014 and again in 2018.
By switching parties publicly, he wanted to make a statement against nationwide civil unrest and anti-police sentiment, according to WFIE-TV.

Maryland is one of four states that New York, New Jersey and Connecticut add to their coronavirus travel advisory
New York state, New Jersey and Connecticut have added Maryland and three other states to their latest coronavirus travel advisory, requiring individuals who visit the state to self-quarantine for 14 days.
In a news release, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office wrote that Maryland, Delaware, Ohio and West Virginia were added to the list because the states “meet the metrics to qualify for New York State’s COVID-19 travel advisory.” In total, 35 states are on the list, the office wrote.

Harris Applauds $550,000 Violence Against Women Grant
WASHINGTON, DC: Rep. Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) announced the award of a $550,000 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women to the Mid-Shore Council On Family Violence located in Easton. Funds were awarded from the Transitional Housing Assistance Program, which provides aid to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking who are homeless, or in need of transitional housing or other housing assistance, as a result of their victimization, and for whom emergency shelter services or other crisis intervention services are unavailable or insufficient. The program supports holistic, victim-centered approaches to providing transitional housing and support services that move individuals into permanent housing and help them secure employment and integrate into a community.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — An outside expert who inspected an immigration detention center in Virginia that experienced a massive coronavirus outbreak is recommending that some high-risk inmates be released after finding flaws in the center’s screening procedures.
U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema ordered the inspection last month after several detainees filed a lawsuit with the help of legal activist groups. Brinkema faulted the detention complex in Farmville for an outbreak that affected more than 90% of the center’s nearly 300 detainees, including a 72-year-old detainee who died. Government officials fought unsuccessfully to block the inspection.

He recommended that detainees at high risk for the disease be released. Days after striking down a bill that would eliminate qualified immunity for police, a legal defense that often prevents officers from facing civil lawsuits, the Delegates passed the bill.
On Friday the bill did not receive the votes needed because two of the states Democrats voted against it, but it was reported that over the weekend House Democrats bullied the two Democrat holdouts, and on Tuesday, one of those Democrats actually made the motion to reconsider, and both Democrats then changed their vote!
“Although I had concerns about the bill last Friday, I welcomed the reconsideration as an opportunity to do further work with Delegate Bourne and my House and Senate colleagues,” Kory said in a statement after the vote.

Army veteran Ronnie McNutt commits suicide in Facebook livestream
A 33-year-old Army veteran from Mississippi who served in Iraq shot himself in the head live on Facebook — and social media sites are still scrambling to remove the harrowing footage, which went viral more than a week ago, according to reports.
Ronnie McNutt, who worked at a Toyota plant in Blue Springs, New Albany, killed himself in front of his computer on Aug. 31 during a livestream on Facebook, the Daily Star reported.
There were unconfirmed reports that McNutt had lost his job and broken up with his girlfriend.
In the days since, the horrifying footage has been shared on multiple social media platforms, including TikTok, where it reportedly ended up on the video-sharing app’s “For You” trending homepage.
