FBI Director Christopher Wray told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday his agency has almost a thousand open investigations into intellectual property theft, almost all of them “leading back to China.”
“There is no country that poses a more severe counterintelligence threat to this country right now than China,” Wray said.
“It is a threat that’s deep and diverse and wide and vexing. It affects basically every industry in this country,” he said of Chinese intellectual property theft.
“And so, we’re working extremely hard with all of our partners to combat it,” he assured the Senate Judiciary Committee. “But make no mistake, this is a high priority for all of us.”
Voice of America News summarized some key points from Wray’s testimony:

Trump food stamp proposal would finally kick millionaires off
The Trump administration has proposed a new rule that could lift millions of people out of dependency, all by closing a loophole in the food stamp program, one that currently allows millionaires to collect welfare.
In today’s divided political climate, both parties can agree: People with significant financial resources, including millionaires, should not receive food stamps.
But that’s exactly what’s happening today, all because of a little-known loophole that was exploited by both the Clinton and Obama administrations.

Organization Requests Docs Relating to DOJ Bribery Under Eric Holder
The Americans for Limited Government requested documents Tuesday relating to an Obama-era corruption case at then-Attorney General Eric Holder’s Department of Justice.
The Americans for Limited Government requested documents pursuant to the federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request relating to “alleged public corruption, abuse of power, misuse of power or the otherwise compromised status” as well as “alleged acceptance of bribes” by Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officials.
The documents pertained to a years-long investigation into financial crimes that the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation (CFC) executives “allegedly committed over a period between 2002-2012.”
“Further, the Department of Justice should be reminded of the policy in favor of disclosure mandated by former President Barack Obama on January 26, 2009. President Obama instructed departments and agencies to operate with a presumption towards disclosure,” Rick Manning, president of the conservative group, added.

Woodstock 50 Festival Moves to Maryland in Bid to Salvage Event
The organizers of the Woodstock 50th anniversary festival are relocating the concert to Maryland from upstate New York, a change they say will salvage the troubled event.
The festival is now slated to take place Aug. 16 through Aug. 18 at Merriweather Post Pavilion, an outdoor amphitheater in Columbia, Maryland, according to documents obtained by Bloomberg. The venueshould be able to accommodate about 32,000 people.
Organizers of Woodstock 50 have been scrambling to save the festival after their main financier backed out and local officials in upstate New York refused to approve a permit. Attempts to move it to different spots in the state -- home of the original 1969 concert -- failed.
“When we heard that there was an opportunity to save this festival and bring a piece of American history to our community this summer, we jumped at the chance,” Calvin Ball, the executive with Howard County, wrote in a note to Greg Peck, one of the organizers. “Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia is a jewel of Howard County and one of the top music venues in the nation. It felt like such a natural fit to host a historic festival on our storied stage.”

16 US Marines arrested for alleged crimes including human smuggling and drug-related offenses
Sixteen US Marines were arrested Thursday for alleged involvement in various illegal activities ranging from human smuggling to drug-related offenses, according to a statement from the Marine Corps.
The arrests took place in a dramatic fashion on Thursday morning at Camp Pendleton, California, during a battalion formation.
"Information gained from a previous human smuggling investigation precipitated the arrests," the statement said. "None of the Marines arrested or detained for questioning served in support of the Southwest Border Support mission."
Eight other Marines were also questioned on their involvement in alleged drug offenses unrelated to today's arrests, the Marine Corps said.
A US official told CNN that Thursday's arrests are related to an incident that occurred earlier this month in which two Marines from Camp Pendleton were charged with transporting undocumented immigrants for financial gain.

Report: James Comey Lied to Trump, Hid that He Was Targeting Trump in Baseless Investigation
Former FBI Director James Comey lied to President Trump three times about him personally not being under investigation — which would explain why he refused to say that in public, according to a new bombshell report.
According to the report by RealClearInvestigations, not only was Trump personally targeted, but Comey himself was acting as an investigative agent as he interacted with the president — completely unbeknownst to the latter.
That would also explain why Comey made memos of his meetings with Trump. The new report reveals that Comey would also put those notes into an investigative file and even call other top FBI officials afterwards.
Comey has previously said he considered the memos personal instead of government documents, according to the Wall Street Journal. He also reportedly said they were written contemporaneously to create a record of his interactions with Trump, and he testified to Congress that he decided to do so because of the “nature of the person.”

FTC slaps Facebook with $5B fine over privacy missteps
The Federal Trade Commission hit Facebook with a record-breaking $5 billion fine on Wednesday, along with a slew of new privacy restrictions in response to its mishandling of users’ private data.
The penalty, the largest levied against a company for privacy violations, stems from an investigation the FTC opened last year into claims Facebook violated a 2012 consent decree with deceptive practices that left users unaware the company was sharing their personal data with third-party apps.
“Despite repeated promises to its billions of users worldwide that they could control how their personal information is shared, Facebook undermined consumers’ choices,” FTC Chairman Joe Simons said. “The magnitude of the $5 billion penalty and sweeping conduct relief are unprecedented in the history of the FTC.”

WATCH: Surveillance footage from Georgia lawmaker Publix confrontation released
Newly released surveillance footage shows the supermarket confrontation between a black Georgia lawmaker and a white man she accused of making racist comments toward her.
The footage contains no audio but shows Democratic Georgia state Rep. Erica Thomas and Eric Sparkes in what appears to be a verbal altercation. Sparkes approaches Thomas, 31, in the checkout line and Thomas walks toward him. Sparkes then appears to walk away before turning back once more to confront Thomas.
The argument began after Sparkes became upset that Thomas had too many items in the express checkout line at a Publix in Mableton, Georgia. The incident went viral on social media. Thomas posted a tearful video to Facebook on Friday, alleging that Sparkes called her a “lazy son of a bitch” and told her and her 9-year-old daughter “to go back where you came from.”

Oh, poop: Many beaches can be potentially unsafe for swimming, study says
To quote “Jaws”: Get out of the water! Also, ewww.
More than half of 2,627 beach sites tested in a new environmental study — including beaches that are local favorites in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware — were potentially unsafe for swimming on at least one day in 2018.
And 610 of those sites were potentially unsafe at least 25% of the days that sampling took place, according to Environment America.
The organization analyzed bacteria from beaches in 29 coastal and Great Lakes states, as well as Puerto Rico.
For the study, Environment America deemed beaches “potentially unsafe” if the bacteria levels exceeded the Environmental Protection Agency’s most protective “Beach Action Value” threshold — meaning what the EPA believes will cause 32 of 1,000 people to get sick from the water.

CEO: Pennsylvania schools rejected offer to pay students' late lunch bills
PHILADELPHIA -- The president of a northeast Pennsylvania school board whose district had warned parents behind on school lunch bills that their children could end up in foster care has rejected a company CEO's offer to cover the cost, the businessman said Tuesday.
Todd Carmichael, chief executive and co-founder of Philadelphia-based La Colombe Coffee, said he offered to give Wyoming Valley West School District $22,000 to wipe out bills that generated the recent warning letter to parents.
But school board President Joseph Mazur rejected the offer during a phone conversation Monday, Carmichael spokesman Aren Platt said Tuesday. Mazur argued that money is owed by parents who can afford to pay, Platt said.

FDA releases anti-vaping ads to air on ESPN, MTV
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is releasing its first anti-vaping television ads Monday targeting teens as part of its “The Real Cost” Youth E-Cigarette Prevention Campaign. A statement said ads will run on ESPN, TeenNick, CW and MTV, along with music sites and social media.

“Did you know that if you vape, you are more likely to start smoking cigarettes?” Dein asks a stunned group of young people after the e-cigarette in one teen’s hand disappears and is replaced by a traditional cigarette. “It’s not magic, it’s statistics.”

BOVARD: Josh Hawley Is Quickly Becoming One Of The Most Important Conservatives In America
Among his many exhortations to conservatives is Russell Kirk’s insistence that they be guided by the principle of prudence. Prudence, properly understood, requires the ability to be self-critical — to avoid an unmoving fealty to outmoded dogmas, to re-examine assumptions, and, most of all, to have the courage and foresight to correct course if and when things have gone wayward.
Leading lights on the Right gathered last week under the banner of “national conservatism” to apply some prudent self-examination to the now well-trodden path of the traditional conservative consensus. It was a necessary effort, and one that may prove to be transformational.
The “consensus,” as it was once described, is hardly without its cracks. At the National Conservatism Conference last week, the orthodoxy that has defined the Right for the last 40 years — philosophical allegiance to the three-legged stool of markets, moral values, and military might — was visibly and profoundly challenged.

Trump administration scores win over challenge to asylum restriction
A federal judge decided Wednesday to leave in place a Trump administration rule that imposes restrictions on individuals seeking asylum in the United States if they passed through a third country on their way to the border between the U.S. and Mexico, potentially leading to a sharp reduction in Central American migrants entering the country.
The rule, published in the Federal Register last week, requires people seeking asylum to first apply in one of the countries they pass through on their way to the U.S., with certain exceptions. The rule was quickly met with a legal challenge from advocacy groups, who moved for a temporary restraining order blocking the rule. After a hearing in Washington, D.C. federal court, District Judge Timothy J. Kelly denied the motion. The rule will remain in place for the duration of the case, unless the decision is successfully appealed.

Rashida Tlaib to receive 'big welcome' in family's West Bank village
Preparations are under way in Beit Ur al-Fauqa, 14 km. west of Ramallah, to welcome Palestinian-American Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) when she visits her hometown next month.
Tlaib’s mother, Fatmeh, and grandmother, Um Issa, traveled to Jordan earlier this week to attend a wedding of a relative. The two women are expected to return to their village in the coming days to participate in preparations for the congresswoman’s visit. The Tlaib clan is one of three clans in Beit Ur al-Fauqa, home to some 1,000 people. The two other clans in the village are Samara and Zahran.
Residents boasted that the village has one of the highest percentage of educated people. More than 20 village residents hold high positions in Palestinian Authority ministries and other Palestinian institutions in Ramallah, including banks.
Members of the three clans told The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday that “everyone in the village” will come out to greet Rep. Tlaib during her visit. “We’re all proud of her,” said Ahmed Abdullah Tlaib, one of her uncles. “Of course, everyone here is excited that she’s coming to visit her village.”

Mueller Lies, Says ‘OLC Decision’ Prevented Him From Indicting Trump
In his testimony on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, former special counsel Robert Mueller was asked repeatedly about why he didn’t indict President Trump after concluding his 22-month investigation into whether the president or his campaign colluded with Russia to alter the outcome of the 2016 election.
Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu asked the question explicitly.
“The reason you did not indict Donald Trump… is because of the OLC decision. Is that correct?”
Mueller responded: “That is correct.”
The “OLC decision” is a ruling from the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) within the Department of Justice (DOJ) — dating back to the time of Richard Nixon and Watergate — that says a sitting president cannot be indicted.

“Hope He Doesn’t Say That Under Oath!” – BOOM – Trump Calls Out Mueller for Lying About Applying for FBI Job “We Have Numerous Witnesses”
Robert Mueller could be in big trouble for that statement.
Earlier today as Cristina Laila reported this morning — President Trump tweeted out this morning that he has witnesses that Mueller applied for the job as FBI Chief.

President Trump: It has been reported that Robert Mueller is saying that he did not apply and interview for the job of FBI Director (and get turned down) the day before he was wrongfully appointed Special Counsel. Hope he doesn’t say that under oath in that we have numerous witnesses to the interview, including the Vice President of the United States!More
Ilhan Omar Told Somali Immigrant: Why Don't We Deport You Back To "Where Ever You Came From"
Ilhan Omar once told a Somali immigrant to the U.S. “why don’t we deport you” after the immigrant suggested that Somali’s shouldn’t import their culture to America.
In a newly uncovered tweet from October 2012, Omar responds to a Somali immigrant to the U.S. who tweeted an article in which the mayor of Maine encouraged Somalis arriving in America to leave their culture at the door.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib also called for the deportation of then candidate Trump in 2015 when she tweeted, “Deport this asshole!”

Warren: Black-White Wealth Gap, Gov’t Racial Discrimination Reasons to Forgive Billions in Student Loan Debt
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said at a press conference on Tuesday on Capitol Hill that one reason for a law to cancel billions of dollars of student loan debt is to address the black/white wealth gap due to the federal government’s “decades” of racial discrimination.
“As everyone in this room knows there is a black-white wealth gap in this country that has been persistent and growing,” Warren said at a press conference she held with House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) to announce the Student Loan Debt Relief Act.
Warren and Clyburn said their bill, if signed into law, would forgive up to $50,000 of loan debt to each of the estimated 45 million Americans who have student loan debt and also would reduce the interest rate for remaining loan balances.
Warren said a college education is sold as something one needs “to get a ticket into America’s Middle Class” but that it comes at a steep cost if one has to borrow money, and race also plays a role.

Beyond Meat is developing plant-based bacon
Beyond Meat has established itself as a $5.7 billion meat-alternative company that is loved by vegan and carnivores alike. If there's one thing that can make Beyond Meat even more admired, it's bacon. On Wednesday, Beyond Meat Inc. announced it's cooking up just that.
The company is creating a plant-based alternative to the beloved breakfast meat, according to Bloomberg. There is no launch date yet, but the development of bacon falls in line with Beyond Meat's recent foray into breakfast.
Beyond Meat has teamed up with Tim Hortons to serve up meatless sausage breakfast sandwiches at nearly 4,000 of its locations, Bloomberg reports.

'PETA Tears' lager released by Maryland seafood joint to celebrate crab battle with activists
Jimmy’s Famous Seafood in Baltimore is selling a limited run of “PETA Tears” lager to celebrate last year’s “go vegan” billboards targeting the crab industry.
PETA made national headlines in 2018 with giant crab billboards reading “I’m ME, Not MEAT. See the individual. Go vegan,” but the nearby activism wasn’t appreciated by Jimmy’s Famous Seafood.
The restaurant, which responded at the time with “SteaMEd crabs. Here to stay. Get famous” billboards of its own, is back for an encore.
“One year ago, PETA launched an unprovoked attack on the crab industry here in Maryland,” the restaurant recently wrote on its Facebook page. “Fresh off the perceived success of their asinine tussle with Barnum’s Animal Crackers, the millionaires expected an easy victory in The Old Line State. Boy, were they wrong!”

Chris Wallace: Mueller Hearing Is ‘a Disaster’ for Democrats and Mueller’s Reputation
Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace tore into Robert Mueller, calling his testimony a “disaster” not only for his reputation, but for Democrats.
“I think this has been a disaster for the Democrats, and I think it’s been a disaster for Robert Mueller,” the Fox News host said Wednesday during a break in the hearing. “He has seemed very uncertain with his brief; he doesn’t seem to know what is in the report.”
Wallace noted that Republicans on the panel attacked Mueller “a number of times” and added that he did not “seem very much in control of the report.”

A bad day for the Swamp
It’s hard to understate just how badly today went for Congressional Democrats. It took a pressure campaign from the left to get former Special Counsel Robert Mueller to agree to testify before Congress in the first place. Now that he has, the reactions to today’s hearing from across the political spectrum were as ruthless as they are revealing.
Here are a few of those reflections:
If Democrats were looking to make headlines with today’s political theater, they got them. “This is Painful,” Mediaite reports in a pundit round-up. “A Sometimes Halting Mueller Parries Questions,” The Washington Post writes. “Democrats And Media Admit: Mueller's Testimony Was A Total Disaster,” Townhall reports.
They’re right. After taking 22 months, calling more than 500 witnesses, issuing more than 2,800 subpoenas, and spending more than $30 million in taxpayer money, Congressional Democrats didn’t get the result they were hoping for from the Special Counsel’s report. In response, they spent more than 6 hours today pressuring Mueller to say something different than what his team concluded in their 448-page analysis.
They came up empty.
While Democrats looked foolish, that isn’t what made today a bad day for the Swamp. It’s a bad day because, once again, Washington put itself first. Americans are sick of partisan theatrics and desperate for our leaders to keep their promises to the voters who sent them here. Instead, Congress spent yet another day arguing about the results of an election that happened more than two and a half years ago.
In that time, President Donald J. Trump’s attention has been on the working-class Americans who put their trust in him. There is plenty of work left to be done, but the results so far are encouraging:
Imagine how incredible America could be doing if Congressional Democrats joined us?
Here are a few of those reflections:
- “Impeachment is over. I don’t think Nancy Pelosi is going to stand for her members bringing forth something that is going to obviously lose.” – ABC News’ Terry Moran
- “I think the Democrats have to be disappointed that [Mueller] didn’t more vigorously defend his process and the team.” – former Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO)
- “Aside from difficult to watch testimony, there has been no new information and no elaboration on the 448-page report.” – CNN Commentator Alice Stewart
- “There were also times when it seemed like [Mueller] was unfamiliar with parts of the investigation.” – CNN’s Jake Tapper
- “One has to wonder, too, where Democrats go from here.” – Politico’s Blake Hounshell

- More than 6 million new jobs have been created since Election Day 2016.
- The 3.7 percent unemployment rate remains near its lowest mark in 49 years.
- Unemployment has hit record or near-record low rates for historically marginalized groups including African-Americans, Hispanics, and women.
- U.S. stock markets continue to break record highs.
- Manufacturing job growth soared to a more than two-decade high last year.
