Washington, D.C., Councilman Jack Evans used his position to benefit private clients who paid him hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to a council investigation.
A report released Monday by O’Melveny & Myers, the law firm hired by the D.C. Council to investigate the Democrat’s dealings, noted 11 examples of governing ethics violations by Evans since 2014, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
Evans, D.C.’s longest-serving lawmaker and former chairman of the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMTA), “repeatedly participated in his official capacity in ‘particular matters’ in which his outside employers or his personal clients had direct financial interests, failing to recognize the inherent conflict that should have been disclosed and addressed,” the report stated, according to WaPo.

NYC Citizens Set Fire To Trash, Dump Rotting Food On Parked Police Car In Brooklyn
Emboldened by liberal politicians who are more likely to attack the police in New York City, rather than defend them, another incident of police disrespect was caught on camera Halloween night in Brownsville.
Video posted by CBS shows people deliberately covering an NYPD vehicle in trash on Halloween night, while a small group of residents sit by, laugh, and taunt the two officers that were left to clean up the mess.
One resident is heard saying "trick or treat", followed by a slur.
The officers calmly show restraint as they are left to clean up trash filled boxes, broken eggs and rotting food. The officers were in the midst of responding to a domestic dispute call and were upstairs at a residence long enough for their vehicle to be vandalized.

Several Blasts Of Arctic Air Will Bring Early Winter To Northeast
Several days ago, Ed Vallee, head meteorologist at Empire Weather LLC, stated that an Arctic blast of cold air would roll into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions later in the week, with the chance of producing one of the first snowmaking weather events of the year.
As of Wednesday morning, there's more evidence that Vallee's forecast has been spot on. Tens of millions across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions will get an early shot of winter over the next several days.

ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today announced that he has signed Common Cause’s “End Gerrymandering Pledge,” reaffirming his support for fair redistricting in Maryland that is transparent, non-discriminatory, and politically impartial.
“Free and fair elections are the very foundation of our democracy, and it’s past time for leaders on both sides of the aisle to put an end to the disgraceful practice of partisan gerrymandering,” said Governor Hogan. “I am proud to sign on to Common Cause’s ‘End Gerrymandering Pledge’ to continue fighting for a fair, nonpartisan, open, and transparent redistricting process for all legislative and congressional districts.”
Continuing his fight to restore free and fair elections, Governor Hogan has vowed to once again introduce the Redistricting Reform Act on the first day of the 2020 legislative session.

Maryland has the unfortunate distinction of having some of the most gerrymandered districts in America. In March, Governor Hogan and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger filed an amicus brief with the United States Supreme Court in support of the plaintiffs in Benisek v. Lamone, which challenged the constitutionality of Maryland’s gerrymandered 6th Congressional District. Governors Hogan and Schwarzenegger attended oral arguments in the case and took part in a rally hosted by Common Cause and the League of Women Voters.

On October 15th, the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Funding Formula Workgroup held their final meeting and voted to fully phase in the recommendations of the Kirwan Commission over the next 10 years, while adjusting for inflation.
According to the Commission, the recommendations from the workgroup are intended to transform the State’s early childhood, primary, and secondary education system into a world-class system. Five main policy areas are addressed through this legislation: early support for young children and families, high-quality and diverse teachers and educators, college and career readiness, additional resources and services for those students who need them, and a strong accountability system to make sure the Blueprint is effectively administered. These recommendations were approved and passed during the 2019 legislative session as a part of SB 1030 – The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.
As an initiative as significant as modernizing our schools, I believe the upmost attention to this process is needed as we proceed. It is imperative to receive input from our local families and counties. This Thursday, November 7th, a community forum will be held at the Dorchester Career & Technology Center at 6:00 pm to hear from experts and stakeholders about the work and recommendation of the Kirwan Commission. Conversations will include the progress that has been made as well as the work that still needs to be done.

The nonprofit New America published a report that found that the Great Recession was largely to blame in the generational wealth divide.
The report says 18- to 34-year-olds earn less than that age group in the 1980s and a “volatile” flow of income could be why, reports the New York Post.
Researchers point to freelance and contract work caused weakened access to employee benefits, and contributed to an overall decline in income.

The Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel released a new legal opinion stating that subpoenas from House Democrats in their impeachment investigation into President Trump will be considered “legally invalid” if Trump administration witnesses aren’t allowed to have an attorney with them while testifying.
The new legal stance by the Trump DOJ is detailed in a five-page legal memo dated Nov. 1, just one day after the House of Representatives voted to formalize the opening of its impeachment process stemming from a Ukraine whistleblower in a near-party-line vote. Republicans had previously complained about the closed-door nature of the impeachment proceedings as well as the lack of a launch vote, but the new legal justification by DOJ could escalate the battle over the Trump administration’s lack of cooperation with the House, as the Trump administration continues to slow-walk some information requests and stonewall some subpoenas.
“Congressional committees participating in an impeachment inquiry may not validly compel executive branch witnesses to testify about matters that potentially involve information protected by executive privilege without the assistance of agency counsel,” Assistant Attorney General Steven Engel wrote. “Congressional subpoenas that purport to require executive branch witnesses to appear without agency counsel in these circumstances are legally invalid and are not subject to civil or criminal enforcement.”

Kansas City votes overwhelming to remove Martin Luther King Jr.'s name from historic street
Kansas City voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved removing Dr. Martin Luther King's name from one of the city's most historic boulevards. The decision comes less than a year after the city council decided to rename The Paseo.
Unofficial results showed the proposal to remove King's name received nearly 70% of the vote, with just over 30% voting to retain King's name.

Katie Hill’s Resignation Impacts Congressional Investigation
The sudden resignation last week of California Democrat Representative Katie Hill over her sex scandal means that she will not have to answer questions from the House Ethics Committee about allegations that she had a sexual relationship with a male congressional staffer.
In resigning, “Hill did manage to escape a full investigation from the House Ethics Committee, which generally shuts down any probes once a lawmaker leaves office because the panel no longer has jurisdiction,” The Washington Post reported. “Hill will never have to answer detailed questions about when her relationship started with her campaign staffer and whether it continued after she took office in January.”
The Post added, “She, and her aides, will not have to undergo inquiries into her ex-husband’s allegation on social media that Hill also had a relationship with a senior aide in her congressional office — something that became expressly forbidden when the House updated its rules in early 2018.”

Millennials spend a lot of time bemoaning their inability to buy a home, forcing them to keep renting. They should want to stay renters, if they know what’s good for them financially.
It’s generally believed that appreciation in home values is what created middle-class wealth in earlier decades. But that was only because monthly loan payments forced homeowners to save and eventually retire their mortgage debt. Most of the rise in single-family house prices over time is due to larger new structures with more marble bathrooms, fancier kitchens, etc.
The quality-adjusted house price index, developed by Prof. Robert Shiller of Yale University, removes this upward price bias by comparing the prices of the same house when it is sold repeatedly over time.
It shows that average quality-adjusted single-family house prices, corrected for overall inflation, have risen a paltry 1.1% at a compound annual rate since 1972. The reason the results have an upward bias at all is that they don’t adjust for interim owners doing upgrades.
