Gmail doesn't cost any money to use, but it's not free.
Google's popular online e-mail service, which turns 10 Tuesday, may not charge for its Gmail accounts. But the company is still collecting payment in the form of massive amounts of personal information about the people who use it.
With an estimated 500-plus million users, Gmail has grown to dominate the Web-mail world. It has also repeatedly found itself in hot water over privacy. Gmail is facing multiple privacy lawsuits in the United States and Europe, some accusing the company of illegal wiretapping for scanning the content of e-mails.
Google reported $16.86 billion in revenues for the last quarter of 2013 alone. One way it makes money from Gmail is by automatically scanning and indexing messages and using the data it mines to show relevant ads to its users.

State Department to Spend $400K on Something So Outlandish It Even Left the Seller ‘Surprised’
The State Department is planning to spend $400,000 to purchase a fiberglass statue of a white camel for a new U.S. embassy being built in Pakistan, BuzzFeed first reported Monday, citing contracting records.
The sculpture, by artist John Baldessari, is of a life-size ablino camel staring upward at the eye of a huge needle.
“A life-size dromedary with its neck extended inquisitively eyes a super-sized needle in a way which makes the viewer think it could actually pass through the needle’s eye,” described Hall Wines, which has a copy of the piece on display. “The colorless beast with striking blue eyes is simultaneously intriguing and peculiar especially when stripped of its pigment and fur.”

IRS stonewalls probe of tea party targeting emails
The Internal Revenue Service’s tea party targeting program is still withholding approval of 19 organizations’ nonprofit status, nearly a year after the scandal was revealed, the agency’s commissioner testified Wednesday to Congress — where he faced fierce criticism from lawmakers who said he is stonewalling.
John Koskinen, the man President Obama tapped to clean up the embattled agency, also said it will take years to respond to all of the document requests from Congress. He told Congress that even complying with a subpoena for emails from just a handful of key employees couldn’t be done before the end of this year because it takes time to have attorneys delete protected taxpayer information.

OBAMA’S EPA RAIDED ANOTHER AMMO COMPANY ALLEGING “ENVIRONMENTAL VIOLATIONS”
Environmental Protection Agency and FBI agents raided the ammunition company USA Brass over alleged “environmental violations” early Thursday morning.
NBC Montana was tipped off by witnesses that federal investigators were there until at least 4 a.m. on Thursday. Federal agents could be seen going through the company’s building and taking items to a truck parked outside. EPA lead criminal investigator Bert Marsden said that the agency was looking into alleged “environmental violations” by USA Brass.
“We are investigating alleged violations of environmental law,” Marsden said on Thursday. “An investigation takes as long as it takes, and I can’t provide any details as it relates to that.”

Dog Rescued From Sinkhole In Frederick
Samantha, a 14-year-old Lhasa apso with normally snow-white fur, was brown and shaking when she emerged from a sinkhole in the early afternoon hours of a snowy Sunday.
Samantha had been trapped underground for nearly eight hours after she fell into the hole, just steps from Susanne Geary's back porch.
Geary had taken Samantha into the backyard at about 7 a.m. when she suddenly realized the dog, which stands barely a foot off the ground and is deaf and blind, was no longer by her side.
“I was looking at the bird feeder and the next thing I knew, she was gone,” Geary said Sunday evening.

JUST IN: FBI, Military Hunt Ex-Army Recruit Suspected Of Plotting 'Ft. Hood-Inspired Jihad'
The FBI is searching for a recent Army recruit believed to be planning a "Fort Hood-inspired jihad against U.S. soldiers," FoxNews.com has learned.
The alert, whose legitimacy was confirmed by military and law enforcement officials, stated that a man identified as Booker had told friends of his "intention to commit jihad." Booker, who is also known as Muhammad Abdullah Hassan, was recruited by the U.S. Army in Kansas City, Mo., in February 2014 and was scheduled to report for basic training on April 7. But he was discharged last week, apparently after law enforcement authorities learned of his alleged plan.
Both the FBI and the 902d Military Intelligence Group at Fort Leavenworth are involved in the hunt.

State Sen. Leland Yee was arrested Wednesday on federal gun trafficking and corruption charges. Sen. Ron Calderon pleaded not guilty Feb. 24 to charges of influence-peddling, and Sen. Roderick Wright was convicted Jan. 28 of perjury and voter fraud.

MD. COMPANIES HAVE BILLIONS IN ASSETS OVERSEAS
WASHINGTON – The president’s budget, released in early March, called for the creation of a national fund to finance repair of the nation’s crumbling roads, bridges and other infrastructure — an idea also proposed by a freshman Maryland congressman.
Rep. John Delaney, D-Potomac, wants to fund infrastructure repair by bringing home billions of dollars in foreign earnings from U.S.-based corporations. The congressman said he has been long concerned about decaying infrastructure.
Delaney’s Partnership to Build America Act would create a new way to pay for these repairs. Corporations would provide the money by buying bonds in The American Infrastructure Fund.
In exchange, they would be allowed to bring back money locked up overseas without paying the full 35 percent corporate tax rate.

School Board Allows Tribute To Md. Teen Who Committed Suicide
WASHINGTON -- Glenelg High School student Grace McComas was cyber-bullied for months before committing suicide in 2012, and after some initial opposition, her classmates will honor her at graduation in May.
The Baltimore Sun reports that the graduating class wanted to wear blue ribbons in honor of McComas's memory but were denied by the school and the Howard County Board of Education.
That led to an avalanche of criticism on social media, including the memorial page for McComas. Last week, Superintendent Renee Foose said the school system had changed its mind.

Georgia Gun Rights Bill Goes Far
Its official name is the Safe Carry Protection Act.
Critics call it the "guns everywhere bill."
Legislation awaiting the governor's signature in Georgia would allow guns in bars, churches, airports and schools. It has drawn national attention because of its sweep.
The National Rifle Assn. called the bill's passage a "historic victory for the 2nd Amendment." Americans for Responsible Solutions, founded by Gabrielle Giffords, the former Arizona congresswoman who was wounded in a 2011 shooting, called it the most extreme gun bill in the nation.

Lawsuit: Man Arrested, Searched For Marijuana Solely For Having Colorado License Plate
An Idaho state trooper arrested and fully searched a 70-year-old Washington man’s vehicle solely because he had a Colorado license plate – a state where marijuana is legal – a federal “license plate profiling” lawsuit alleges.
Darien Roseen was driving along I-84 between his second home in Colorado and Washington state on Jan. 25 when Idaho State Trooper Justin Klitch “immediately” pulled out from the Interstate median and began “rapidly accelerating” to catch up to Roseen, according to the complaint in a Courthouse News Service report. Exiting at a designated rest area, Roseen says he became “uncomfortable” that Klitch had followed him though he not “done anything wrong.”
After pulling Roseen over, Klitch reportedly failed to explain why he made the stop, although he later said he made the stop because Roseen failed to use his signal when pulling off on the exit, and because he bumped the curb. Klitch rejected Roseen’s reason for pulling into the rest area, telling him, “You didn’t have to go to the bathroom before you saw me … I’m telling you, you pulled in here to avoid me.”

REPORT: OBAMA ADMIN RELEASED TENS OF THOUSANDS OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT CRIMINALS
President Obama’s Department of Homeland Security caught then released 68,000 aliens who had previously been convicted of a crime, a new report from the Center for Immigration Studies shows.
The report, provided to Breitbart News ahead of its late Sunday evening release, reviews internal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) metrics to conclude that the Obama administration released 35 percent—or 68,000—convicted criminal aliens back into the U.S. general population when they could have been deported. “The criminal alien releases typically occur without formal notice to local law enforcement agencies and victims,” CIS’s Jessica Vaughan, the report’s author, added.
By “criminal,” ICE means people who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony that is not a traffic violation. For instance, traffic violations like Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or even vehicular manslaughter do not count toward this description of “criminal alien.” As for the definition of “alien,” ICE mostly means illegal aliens, though some are legal aliens when they are considered deportable legal aliens—which is possible for legal immigrants who have committed a serious crime, like a felony.

Statement from Rep. Harris on MD Health Exchange
Tomorrow, the board of the Maryland Health Exchange will vote on whether to replace the state’s failed exchange with the technology from Connecticut’s exchange and hire Deloitte, the contractor that built the Connecticut system. Connecticut has had one of the most successful exchanges in the country, while Maryland has had one of the worst. Two years and $200 million later, Maryland is back to square one—and will now have to spend tens of millions more to implement Connecticut’s exchange. The board has no choice but to vote yes, however, before even more taxpayer dollars are wasted on the dysfunctional exchange.
When Obamacare Website Failed, Oregon Took A Different Approach Than Md.
Monday is the deadline for folks in Maryland to start the application process for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. If you miss this deadline, you face a tax penalty next year.
The good news is that tens of thousands of people have health insurance who couldn’t — or wouldn’t — obtain it before.
The bad news is that Maryland’s health exchange has been an unmitigated disaster — a painfully small number of people actually applied and paid their initial insurance bill.
Those responsible for this stupendously costly debacle aren’t going to be held accountable.
The deeply flawed computer software continues generating daily horror stories. Failure to adequately advertise community sign-ups led to sparse turnouts till the deadline neared.

Paul keeps pole position in ‘16 GOP presidential field; Huckabee second in new poll
A new nationwide poll found that Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee are leading the field of potential 2016 presidential candidates.
Mr. Paul and Mr. Huckabee won support from 13 percent of those surveyed, while former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was nipping at their heels with 11 percent.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz each pulled in 9 percent.
“With a field of quality candidates, it is no surprise that no one has broken away from the pack,” said Chris Wilson, CEO of WPA Opinion Research, which did the poll. “The important thing at this point of the race is staying in the conversation, and the fact that Rand Paul, Huckabee, Bush, Christie and Cruz are all managing to do that bodes well for them long term.”

Army Head to Decide Rank of Disgraced General
WASHINGTON — The secretary of the Army said Tuesday he will have the final say on whether a disgraced brigadier general at the center of a sexual misconduct case retires at a lower rank with sharply reduced retirement pay.
Facing outraged House Democrats, John McHugh said the case of Brig. Gen. Jeffrey A. Sinclair remains open a week after he was spared prison and sentenced to a reprimand and a $20,000 fine.
"The process is still ongoing. I have to make final certifications about rank and retirement," McHugh told the Armed Services Committee.
McHugh could bust Sinclair down to a lower rank which would mean a significantly reduced pension.

Matt Holloway – Can you say RINO?
It’s really not surprising that Norman Conway and Jim Mathias have no qualms about giving state “grants” to private groups like of the Willards Lions Club – after all, its members are potential voters and those two are Democrats. But it was a real shock that Matt Holloway, who claims to be a conservative Republican, told the audience at the candidate forum this week, held at the Chipman Center, that he would support funding for that organization by Wicomico County. Anything for a few votes even if it takes more public funds - that’s what Democrats do.
It’s too bad that he can’t switch his affiliation and run this time as a Democrat, along with a Laura Mitchell, for the two at-large seats on the County Council.
Let’s hope that in the primary the Republican voters choose John Cannon and Muir Boda for those seats. With John Hall unopposed, there will be at least one RINO on the Wicomico County Council after the general election this fall, and that’s one too many.

"The Market Is Rigged"
It was almost excatly five years ago to the day, on April 10, 2009, that Zero Hedge - widely mocked at the time by "experts" - began its crusade against HFT and the perils of algorithmic trading (which of course were validated a year later with the Flash Crash). In the interim period we wrote hundreds if not thousands of articles discussing and explaining the pernicious, parasitic and destabilizing role HFT plays in modern market topology, and how with every passing day, markets are becoming increasingly more brittle, illiquid and, in one word, broken. Or, as Michael Lewis put it most succinctly, "rigged." With Lewis' appearance last night on 60 Minutes to promote his book Flash Boys, and to finally expose the HFT scourge for all to see, we consider our crusade against HFT finished. At this point it is up to the general population to decide if this season's participants on Dancing with the Stars or the fate of Honet Boo Boo is more important than having fair and unrigged markets (obviously, we know the answer).
For those who missed it, here it is again. In the video below, Lewis explains how an extra millisecond allows high-frequency traders to exploit computerized trading in the U.S. stock market. By "beating" investors to exchanges, Lewis argues that high-frequency traders can buy stocks and quickly sell them back at higher prices.

MORE THAN 50 GUNS RECOVERED IN POSSIBLE GUNS FOR DRUG MONEY SCHEME IN CECIL CO.
(ELKTON, MD) – Maryland State Police recovered more than 50 guns in a Cecil County home late last week and are investigating further to determine if the guns were part of an illegal fencing operation that supplied money for drugs in exchange for the stolen property.
The accused is identified as Stephen Molitor, 63, of the 200-block of Locust Lane, Elkton, Md. He is charged with illegal transfer of a regulated firearm, illegal possession of a regulated firearm while prohibited, theft over $1,000, possession with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance, two counts of drug possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
