Animal Cruelty
Incident: Animal Cruelty
Date of Incident: 20 April 2010
Location: 1500 block of May Drive, Salisbury, MD
Suspect: Mark Laird, 20, Salisbury, MD
Narrative: On 20 April 2010 at 4:00 PM, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into animal cruelty that allegedly occurred inside a residence in the 1500 block of May Drive in Salisbury. During the investigation the deputy learned that Mark Laird was accused of placing a cat that belonged to the complainant into the microwave and turning it on. Upon initiating the investigation, the complainant advised that the cat went outside and has not been seen since the microwave and is believed to have possibly succumbed as a result. After meeting with both the suspect and witnesses, the deputy determined that the incident warranted charges being filed.
The deputy completed an Application for Statement of Charges and received a warrant for Laird’s arrest from the District Court Commissioner. On 28 April 2010 the deputy placed Laird under arrest for Animal Cruelty. After processing at the Central Booking Unit and an initial appearance in front of the District Court Commissioner, Laird was released on Personal recognizance.

INDEPENDENT REVIEW SHOWS MARYLAND IS AMONG MOST CRIME-RIDDEN STATES IN THE U.S.
“We have miles to go in reducing the awful toll of violence in our state,” Ehrlich said. “Ranking among the eight most violent crime-ridden states is not ‘progress.’ When we do make headway, it’s the police officers and sheriff’s deputies and corrections officers who deserve the credit,” Ehrlich said
Maryland had 33,614 violent crimes last year and ranked as the state with the second highest frequency of both murder and robbery in America;
Baltimore still has a shockingly high murder rate, and O’Malley’s characterization of Prince George’s County as a “crescent of death” surrounding the District of Columbia a few years ago also demonstrates his outlook for the county, Ehrlich said.
“The most successful anti-crime program any governor can offer is a revitalized economy,” Ehrlich continued. “I am confident that my plan for more jobs, lower taxes, and less government spending will not only create economic growth but also give our citizens the safer neighborhoods they deserve.” Bob Ehrlich has pledged to roll back the 20% increase in sales taxes implemented by the O’Malley Administration, and to encourage job development by reducing burdens and barriers handicapping small businesses around the state.

Should I Stay Or Should I Go
For years now I have been talking amongst friends about celebrities and mainly people in the West Coast simply turning in their keys to their home to their Bank.
Several years ago a company established a new business walking people through the legal process of how to walk away from your mortgage. One of the celebrities I can recall off the top of my head is Jose Canseco. We ran THIS STORY just over two years ago. Canseco owed a bank more than $2.5 million on the house and simply walked away from it.
Last night on 60 Minutes they did a segment on every day homeowners who COULD afford their mortgage simply turning in their keys to the Bank and walking away. Why, because their value dropped anywhere from 40% to 70% and quite frankly it wasn't worth paying a mortgage. By the time they excused their 10% down payment, (if they even had to put up that much) and went across the street and rented a similar home for less than half their mortgage payment, within only a few short years their credit would recover and they would have saved all that additional money for another down payment on another home. It's a risk, (credit wise) but one worth taking right now.
In my day and age, there was always a certain pride in fulfilling your contractual agreement and it was shameful for anyone to foreclose on anything. Today things are obviously different and quite frankly, I can't blame many of these people for walking away. It's a business decision, just like any other. Follow me for a second.
You see, the Banks have no remorse taking a home away from YOU, so why should YOU have a problem walking away from something they stated was worth X amount of money and it drops 40 to 70%? These are the "professionals" you and I are supposed to depend on.
There comes a time when you have to look at your losses and decide what's best for you and your Family. You might even say, two can play that game. Since it is not against the law to walk away from your home and mortgage, while this encourages even more of a financial disaster towards an already failing economy, it seems to be the ONLY way to get back at those who created a false economy. If it's not illegal to do so and the Banks continue to make billions of dollars off hard working Americans, well, perhaps now is the time to consider doing what others started doing years ago.
I called it years ago and to see 60 Minutes finally covering it, if you believed our economy was starting to come back, IMHO, those people who believed such a thing are more warped than ever before and should start wearing tinfoil hats.
Here's last nights segment.

UK leader backs party's negotiations on coalition with Liberal Democrats
LONDON - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said on Monday he would step down this year to try to give his Labour Party a chance of forming a government with the smaller Liberal Democrats after an inconclusive election.
The Lib Dems are already talking to the Conservatives about governing together, but Brown said in a statement delivered in front of his official residence at 10 Downing Street the Lib Dems now also wanted to talk to Labour.
The center-right Conservatives, led by David Cameron, won most seats in parliament but fell short of a majority in the election last Thursday.
Labour, in power since 1997, came second and the Liberal Democrats, led by Nick Clegg, a distant third.

Senator Colburn Files For Reelection
ANNAPOLIS – Senator Richard F. Colburn (R. Eastern Shore) has announced that he has filed for re-election to his 37th Legislative District seat (Caroline, Dorchester, Talbot and Wicomico counties). Senator Colburn highlighted issues he has worked on during his 2007-2010 term. Senator Colburn stated “I have always worked diligently to make sure the voices of my constituents are heard as I have strived to have an office responsive to constituent concerns. I believe that my constituents always come first.
I was responsible for giving Caroline County voters the ability to make the final decision in the 2010 General Election about the Hybrid Elected School Board Bill. I introduced legislation to increase chances of electing a resident Delegate for Caroline County. As your representative, I will continue to push for mid-shore transportation projects such as the dualization of state route 404 and the building of a new Dover bridge.
I championed a $500,000 Bond Bill for the new $3 million Dorchester General Hospital Emergency Center. During the 2010 Session I was successful in securing $70,000 for the Dorchester YMCA ($140,000 total/2007-2010) and $50,000 for the Richardson Maritime Museum. In Wicomico County, I was also successful in working with Delegate Norm Conway in securing $10,000 ($160,000 total between the House and the Senate) to assist the Salisbury Zoo for their animal health clinic renovation project.
I have been instrumental in working with the Cambridge City Council to revitalize the downtown area. I recognize there is a tremendous return on the tourist dollar (almost $29 to every $1 spent) which is why I will continue to do everything possible to make Dorchester County a real tourist destination point. I have worked hard in a bipartisan effort by listening and acting on behalf of my constituents to keep the Easton Memorial Hospital in the Town of Easton. This is a health and safety issue for Mid-Shore citizens. Keeping the hospital in Easton retains 1,100 jobs in the immediate area. Losing it would have been a devastating economic blow to the entire region.
The Delmarva poultry industry employs almost 15,000 people and is a $2 billion industry; because of this I have worked hard in promoting and preserving this industry. I have been a strong advocate for business on the Eastern Shore, particularly the agriculture and seafood industries. I will continue to help the embattled watermen by trying to keep them working on the Chesapeake Bay. I have also been proactive in trying to get high-speed internet and broadband on the Shore.
I am known for my tough anti-crime positions—advocating the death penalty for convicted first degree murderers and pushing for an amendment that would allow police officers to identify (via drivers license) second and third tier sex offenders.
I am proud to be an Eastern Shore Native, born and raised in Oxford. It has been my distinct honor and privilege to represent the people of the Eastern Shore. I have and will always love the Eastern Shore and will continue to work hard on its behalf.
Therefore, as the 2010 Maryland General Assembly has concluded, and with my wife Alma’s encouraging and enthusiastic support, I have filed for reelection for the 37th District State Senate Seat.”

They Foreclosed On Our Landlord And May Leave Us Homeless
Jennifer says her apartment's landlord suffered a foreclosure, which will leave the rooms uninhabitable if the utilities have been shut off. Her horror story is probably more common than you'd like to believe in this era of rapid foreclosures, and a cautionary tale of signing a lease in which utilities are included.
Brooke Has End Of Study Scans This Week
Quick Update:
I’m exhausted and have to be up early Monday morning so I’m going to keep this very brief and will update more soon.
I had a wonderful Mother’s Day today (best one ever)! After church and brunch I packed and at 4:00 today Brooke, Bailey and I headed up to NJ to my Mom’s house. Brooke is having all of her End of Study scans and tests this week at CHOP. Monday morning she is having a Bone Marrow Biopsy. Tuesday she will have a CT Scan, MIBG injection and an Audiology appt. Wed she will have a MIBG Scan, Oncology clinic appt and Ophthalmology clinic. Since Brooke no longer has her “tubies” she will need to have IV’s placed and needle sticks so I imagine this will be very stressful for her which will be stressful for me as well along with the stress of the scans themselves and what the results could be. Please pray for clear scans/biopsies as well as comfort and peace. I will update whenever I get results or if there are any issues. Thank you so much!
God Bless,
Amy
EU Puts Up $1 Trillion To Defend Euro
The European Union put up a staggering $1 trillion Monday to contain its spreading government debt crisis and keep it from tearing the euro currency apart and derailing the global economic recovery.
Analysts said the huge sum supplied the "shock and awe" markets had been waiting for for weeks, at least in the short term, and the euro soared on the news.
European leaders negotiated into the early hours of Monday before reaching a deal in which governments that use the euro would join the EU and International Monetary Fund in putting up €750 billion in loans available to prop up troubled governments.

The Husband Store and The Wife Store
You may visit this store ONLY ONCE! There are six floors and the value of the products increase as the shopper ascends the flights. The shopper may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building!
So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband. On the first floor the sign on the door reads:
Floor 1 - These men Have Jobs
She is intrigued, but continues to the second floor, where the sign reads:
Floor 2 - These men Have Jobs and Love Kids.
'That's nice,' she thinks, 'but I want more.'
So she continues upward. The third floor sign reads:
Floor 3 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, and are Extremely Good Looking.
'Wow,' she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going.
She goes to the fourth floor and the sign reads:
Floor 4 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Good Looking and Help With Housework.
'Oh, mercy me!' she exclaims, 'I can hardly stand it!'
Still, she goes to the fifth floor and the sign reads:
Floor 5 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Gorgeous, Help with Housework, and Have a Strong Romantic Streak.
She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the sixth floor, where the sign reads:
Floor 6 - You are visitor 31,456,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please. Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store.
PLEASE NOTE:
To avoid gender bias charges, the store's owner opened a New Wives store just across the street.
The first floor has wives that love sex.
The second floor has wives that love sex and have money and like beer
The third, fourth, fifth and sixth floors have never been visited.

Bay Runner Shuttle Celebrates 5 Years Of Service
All it takes is one look at the second image above to know Bay Runners Shuttle has delivered fantastic numbers to build the economy here in Wicomico County. From Ocean Pines to Salisbury to Easton and Kent Island, they have grown to serve the entire Eastern Shore. What surprised me most was their newest fleet of handicap vans to shuttle medicare patients from the Eastern Shore to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. S. U. MEN’S LACROSSE GETS 1st ROUND BYE AND 1ST BRACKET SEEDING IN NCAA TOURNAMENT
SU’s first game will be here on Saturday, May 15, starting at 7:30 PM, against the winner of Springfield-Widener, which meet on Wednesday. If the seedings win out, on May 19 the Gulls would face Haverford and on May 23 play a third game this year against Stevenson. The winner of the latter game would be the bracket champ.
The championship game will be on May 30 at M&T Stadium, against the north bracket winner, and it could be a rematch of Gulls and Cortland, starting at noon.
And the SU womens’ lacrosse team is also top ranked in the NCAA tournament. The Sea Gulls (17-1) will be looking for the program's first national championship this season.
The road will begin on Saturday as Salisbury will take the field at 11:30 a.m., to face the winner of Wednesday's first-round game between Christopher Newport University (13-6) and Catholic University of America (12-6). The Sea Gulls met both teams this season, coming away with a 21-6 win at Christopher Newport to open the season, and collecting a 16-7 win against Catholic in early March.
The other two guests at Sea Gull Stadium this weekend will not be known until Wednesday's first round is complete as the winner of games between The College of New Jersey against Cabrini College (11-7) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripts College (14-2) against Endicott College (16-4) will play in Saturday's other regional game. The second game on Saturday will begin at 2:30 p.m.
Salisbury will be a college lacrosse hot spot this weekend for sure.
Go Gulls!

UPDATE: The Salisbury U. mens' lacrosse program is well-represented by former players who will be coaching in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The best known is Dave Cottle, who coaches Maryland in the Division I playoffs.
In Division III, there are at least two teams coached by former SU players. Jim Townsend (SU 1986) coaches the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) "Engineers." Kyle Hannan (SU 1986) coaches the Goucher "Gophers." Both are in the North bracket so will not face the Sea Gulls, except possibly in the championship game.
Can This Be Done In Wicomico County
In a proposal widely viewed as unlikely to pass, but still reflecting the troubled times facing local governments everywhere, a Pennsylvania State Legislator has introduced a bill to consolidate all municipal functions into the county governments and centralize their management.
Pennsylvania has a lot of municipalities.
There are cities of varying sizes, townships, boroughs and even one town. All told, there are 2,562 of them — each with their own elected officials.
That’s about 2,495 too many for Rep. Thomas Caltagirone.
The Berks County Democrat has introduced legislation calling for what he describes as a “massive shift” in the operations of local governments. His bill would call for a state constitutional amendment to have Pennsylvania’s 67 county governments absorb all the municipalities within their borders, and operate under a single countywide structure.
He cites a number of reasons for the idea: the rising cost of government and increasing property taxes, landlocked communities with stagnant tax bases and a loss of industries and business.
“You have such duplication of services with boroughs, townships, cities and counties, it doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense on economies of scale,” he said. “We should be able to hopefully save some money through more efficient operations provided on a countywide basis.”

School Buses
What is it with these school buses lately? This morning I was driving down Pemberton Dr. coming up the Crooked Oak Lane intersection. I saw a school bus coming to the STOP SIGN at Pemberton Dr. The bus only slowed down and just pulled right out onto Pemberton Drive right in front of me. I was driving a big diesel truck and had to slam on the brakes.
It was like the driver decided that he/she was not going to get stuck behind me. Instead he/she almost caused an accident. I don't know if the driver was male or female but it was bus number 58. Now I can understand why there are so many school bus accidents in this county. They need to go back to driving school and learn that just because they are big and yellow that they still need to abide by the traffic laws, and laws of common sense.
Don't they realize that those children's lives are in the palm of their hands?
TROOPERS SEARCH FOR SUSPECT IN DRIVE-BY SHOOTING
The victims are identified as Kevin A. Brown, 24, of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Justin L. Bentley, 24, of Columbia, Md. Brown sustained two minor graze wounds to his shoulder which are believed to have been caused by bullet fragments or flying glass. He did not require medical treatment. Bentley was not injured.
At 7:15 a.m. today, a Maryland state trooper on patrol from the College Park Barracks saw what appeared to be a disabled gray 2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS on the shoulder of westbound Rt. 50 at the Anne Arundel and Prince George’s County line. The trooper stopped and found Brown and Bentley had been awaiting a tow truck that had just left.
Brown and Bentley told the trooper they had been at a club in Washington, D.C. last night and were headed east on Rt. 50 toward I-97 at about 4:30 a.m. today. Brown was driving his Chevrolet Monte Carlo and missed the exit for I-97. He turned around and was headed west on Rt. 50 toward I-97.
Both victims said a black Range Rover with tinted windows came up fast beside them on the driver’s side of the Monte Carlo. The passenger window of the suspect vehicle was lowered and a suspect described only as an African American male fired multiple times with what was described as a dark-colored handgun. The only other suspect or suspect vehicle description was that the vehicle had either temporary or cardboard registration plates.
The victims continued west on Rt. 50 and said the suspect vehicle went north on I-97. They were forced to stop at the county line, several miles from the scene, when one of the tires shredded off the rim, apparently because it had been punctured by a bullet. The rear window on the driver’s side of the vehicle had been shattered and there were multiple bullet holes in the side of the car.
The victims had attempted to change the tire and had to await a tow truck for several hours. The victims had not called police to report the incident.
The investigation is continuing. Anyone who may have any information about this incident and the suspects or vehicle involved is urged to contact Maryland State Police at the Glen Burnie Barracks at 410-761-5130.
RNC Shakeup, Steele Still Holds Chair
RNC chief of staff Michael Leavitt sent an e-mail message to committee members telling them of the changes in the fundraising department and promising a strong strategy heading into crucial midterm elections in November. A replacement for finance director Rob Bickhart and deputy Debbie LeHardy, expected to be longtime Republican fundraiser Mary Heitman, was to be announced soon.
The finance team's ouster came late on a Friday as the RNC prepared for a major meeting with its state party chairs in the Washington area next week. The RNC became a late-night joke and questions arose about chairman Michael Steele's tenure after financial reports showed lavish spending, including almost $2,000 for a night at a sex-themed nightclub with topless entertainers.
In a prepared statement, Steele said, "We are well-positioned for victory this fall and look forward to working with Mary to continue to improve upon our strong fundraising numbers and provide the support necessary to win elections."
Obama To Tap (Ultra-liberal) Kagan For Supreme Court
Kagan appears to have beaten out other front-runners for the job, including federal appellate judges Merrick Garland and Diane Wood.
Seen as a more moderate choice on Obama's short list, Kagan has already survived a Senate confirmation process for her current job.
A formal announcement is widely expected by Monday or Tuesday.
Stevens, 90, leader of the high court's liberal bloc and the court's oldest member, is retiring this summer, giving Obama his second Supreme Court opening to fill.
The court's political makeup will not change, since Obama is expected to name a fellow liberal replacement for Stevens. Appointed to the court by President Gerald Ford, Stevens took office in December 1975 and has been known as a liberal despite his appointment by a Republican.
In a brief letter to Obama, Stevens said he concluded, "It would be in the best interests of the Court to have my successor appointed and confirmed well in advance of the commencement of the Court's next term."
Stevens says he'll step down when the Supreme Court finishes its work for the summer in late June. His retirement had been widely expected.
Food-Stamp Tally Sets Record
Food stamps are the primary federal anti-hunger program, helping poor people buy food. Enrollment is highest during times of economic distress. The jobless rate was 9.9 percent, the government said on Friday.
The Agriculture Department said 39.68 million people, or 1 in 8 Americans, were enrolled for food stamps during February, an increase of 260,000 from January. USDA updated its figures on Wednesday.
"This is the highest share of the U.S. population on SNAP/food stamps," said the anti-hunger group Food Research and Action Center, using the new name for food stamps, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). "Research suggests that one in three eligible people are not receiving ... benefits."

Humane Society
Since they did not open until 11:00, I waited for the time to pass. I got there at about 5 minutes after. People that had arrived before I did had already begun to stake their claim on the puppy of their choice so there were only 2 puppies left to even get to know. I reached in to pet both of them and was going to pick the male up and the female got all in his way as if to say, no...I am your's and I have picked you as my new owner. Needless to say, it was love at first sight as I held her in my face to get a good look at her and she licked me.
By this time, the office was getting packed with others who came for the same reason. To be fair to others, I put the puppy back in so they could see her and have a chance as well. I filled out the paperwork while watching many fall in love with her also. A gentleman asked me which one I wanted to adopt and I responded, the one you are holding. I saw his face fall and said, please apply anyway. Who knows? For some reason, I may not make the cut and this puppy still deserves a home. He smiled and said, thank you miss.
I could not stay for the entire process and when I ran my errands and got back home, I logged on and saw that all of them but the mother had been adopted! This happened within a few hours of them opening their doors! I won't know until next week if I am one of the lucky ones but if not, I hope that the gentleman can have her. The funny thing is, I had decided to call her Harley and the gentleman was wearing what I think was Harley attire.
The employees and helpers there are fantastic! I listened as they patiently answered the same questions over and over again as new people came in and asked the same things that those of us had asked when we got there. I'd like to thank them for all that they do.
Where's The BUDGET??
The following notice is posted on the City of Fruitland website:

The Fruitland City Council will host the annual Public Hearing on the proposed water and sewer, general operating and capital improvements budget for Fiscal Year 2010 — 2011 on the above date and time at the Fruitland City Hall, 401 East Main Street, Fruitland.
Copies of the budget proposal will be available for inspection the day of the hearing.
For further information, call 410-548-2809.
Diane C. Nelson, City Clerk.
[Please run this ad on Tuesday, May 4, 2010]
Why aren't the budget figures being made available until THE DAY OF THE HEARING?
The city website has a Budget tab, but it still contains LAST year's budget numbers, which were posted well before the hearing was held last year.
Why aren't the taxpayers being given the same opportunity to see what's being proposed? Are they trying to just slide this by without any scrutiny?
Sewer/water rates and taxes are being increased, yet the taxpayers are being kept in the dark until right before the hearing.
The notices of the hearing weren't even posted till a few days beforehand.
Is this what you call 'transparent government'?
This is the same stuff that's been going on in the back rooms of Washington, and people are fed up with it.
It's time to put an end to it-- beginning right here in our local communities.
Tea Party time!

Couple Arrested At U.S. Border For Asking Questions
Attempting to enter the U.S. at the Niagara Falls border, the couple were asked where they were going, to which they responded the Niagara Falls shopping mall. When the immigration official bizarrely demanded to know what shops they were planning to visit, the situation quickly worsened.
After daring to ask why they were being bombarded with such ridiculous questions, they were told to exit their car and are taken inside for further interrogation by another official. When the Canadian man rhetorically asks, “what are you gonna do, shoot me” the officials claim he is threatening them before he is arrested.

Senate Hearing Promotes Anti-American Watchlist Bills
On Tuesday, as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, Lieberman held a hearing to give Lautenberg and King the opportunity to promote their bills S.1317 and H.R.2159, to prohibit the possession of firearms by people on the FBI's "terrorist watchlist," and Lautenberg's S. 2820, to maintain records of approved instant background check transactions for a minimum of 180 days. The watchlist bills further propose that a person seeking relief in court from these new restrictions would be prevented from examining and challenging "evidence" against him, and that the judge deciding whether the person had been watchlisted for good reason be limited to summaries and redacted versions of such "evidence."
Joining Lautenberg, King and Bloomberg to speak in favor of these patently anti-American and unconstitutional bills was Bloomberg's police commissioner, Ray Kelly.
Claims made by the bills' supporters during the hearing bordered on the frivolous. Lautenberg cited the failed attempt last Saturday to set off a homemade gasoline-propane bomb in an SUV near NYC's Times Square -- even though his watchlist bill would only regulate firearms and commercially made explosives. Lautenberg then brought up an even more irrelevant incident, the 2008 attack by a terrorist group in Mumbai, India, saying "That's why we need to change the law" in the United States. A "fanatic" in his own right when it comes to gun control, Lautenberg continued, "Nothing in our laws keeps fanatics on the terror watchlist from purchasing guns and explosives."

Del. McDonough To Bring Arizona Immigration Reform Bill To Maryland
During a news conference he has scheduled for noon Friday, McDonough will announce his intention to introduce a bill during the Maryland General Assembly’s 2011 session that will replicate the Arizona immigration law.
The recently-approved Arizona immigration law extends and expands state law enforcement’s abilities to stop, question, detain, and eventually deport suspected illegal immigrants if they are not carrying the appropriate identification. The bill has created a national debate with opponents warning that it authorizes and empowers racial profiling, while supporters say the legislation was long overdue and only necessary because the federal government refuses to enforce immigration laws already on the books.
McDonough said he has invited Senator Russell Pearce from Arizona, the primary sponsor of the new law,

Stand Up for Arizona
Major demonstrations are to be held in 70 cities on May 1 to protest the new Arizona law to cope with an army of half a million illegal aliens now living there.
Since Gov. Jan Brewer signed that law a week ago, Arizona has been subjected to savage attack as the modern embodiment of Jim Crow, apartheid and Nazism. Few have risen in her defense.
In San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., moves are afoot to boycott Arizona and cancel conventions to break the state, as it was broken when Arizona declined to set aside a holiday for Martin Luther King.
Republican leaders like Jeb Bush, Karl Rove and even the rising Marco Rubio of Florida have declared themselves "troubled" or "concerned" and washed their hands of Arizona, which suggests they have not read the law - or the party remains captive to country-club political correctness.
In a particularly offensive smear, Mexican President Felipe Calderon charged Arizona with opening the door "to intolerance, hate, discrimination and abuse in law enforcement."
And what was the reaction of the Great Apologist to this slander of an American state by the leader of a neighboring nation?
None. One wonders if Barack Obama will ever stand up to foreign leaders' abusing the nation that awarded him its highest honor. Or has he been marinated since birth in the "Blame America First" mindset of the San Francisco Democrats who sneer at the real America?
As columnist Michelle Malkin writes, there is no shortage of ammunition our president could have used to fire back at the hypocrites of Mexico City.
For where Arizona has made it a misdemeanor to be in the country illegally, in Calderon's country it is a felony that can get you years in prison. Where illegal aliens in America regularly protest under Mexican flags, no foreign resident of Mexico may demonstrate against the regime.
Where immigration is changing the ethnic balance of this country, in Mexico immigrants are not allowed in who could upset "the equilibrium of the national demographics." Where Americans demand we treat illegal aliens firmly but fairly, Guatemalans caught in Mexico are often treated with a brutality bordering on sadism.
We really do not need any lectures on morality or human rights from Mexico. But what is the matter with our leader that he will not defend his country?
As for the supposedly neo-Nazi Arizona law, what does it really say and do?
First, it brings Arizona law into conformity with federal law. As it has long been a federal crime to be in the country illegally, it is now a crime in Arizona.
Second, just as U.S. law since 1940 has required legal aliens - immigrants and guest workers - to carry their green cards or work visas at all times, Arizona law now says the same thing.
Is there something inhumane about this? If so, where have the protests been these last 70 years? Many of us in the 1950s had to carry not only driver's licenses, but draft cards.
No U.S. citizen in Arizona, however, has to carry an identity card. As for racial profiling, the new law forbids it. A police officer, it reads, "may not solely consider race, color or national origin" in stopping anyone or in determining an immigrant's status.
Before there can be a "reasonable suspicion" an individual is here illegally, there must first be a "lawful contact." This means no cop can halt and challenge a man on the street, or sitting in a restaurant or bar, or driving a car.
If an individual is caught running a traffic light, the police must first ask for his license. Only if the individual lacks a valid ID or driver's license, or his behavior causes "reasonable suspicion" he is an illegal, can he be brought in. Then, a call must be made to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to determine his status.
Where is the neo-Nazism here?
Is this too much to ask on behalf of the police in a state whose first city, Phoenix, in the words of Kris Kobach, co-author of the new law, has become the "kidnapping capital of North America and the hub of human smuggling into the United States"?
When one looks closely at what the Arizona law says, the hysteria it has generated seems so excessive one wonders if it is fear the Arizona law will work - as well as hatred - that is behind the over-the-top reaction.
Whatever the motivation of the left, defense of this law by conservatives is imperative. For without tools like this, the Southwestern states cannot stop the invasion from Mexico - given the U.S. government's dereliction of its duty to defend America's borders.
Conservatives must stand up for Arizona. And this is winnable. For by backing away from "immigration reform," both Harry Reid and Obama are admitting, de facto, that America is with us, not with them.
