It's been more than four decades since Jimmy Carter campaigned across Georgia and asked voters to make him governor.
His winning race set the stage for his election as president in 1976.
Carter's just turned 90, but he was out campaigning on Sunday for his grandson Jason, a Democratic state senator and lawyer who's challenging the Republican governor, Nathan Deal, on Nov. 4, in a close race.
The former president and his grandson spoke during a church service open to the public in south Georgia, a key area for Jason Carter as he looks to woo former Democrats back to a party that many left more than a decade ago. The visit to Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Albany was part of a campaign push ahead of early voting, which begins Monday.

Tony Perkins: Supreme Court Made 'Back-Alley' Decision on Gay Marriage
The U.S. Supreme Court's recent refusal to hear cases upholding same-sex marriage will only ensure the issue rages for years to come, says Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council.
"The court did a back-alley-type Roe v. Wade judicial decision by letting the lower courts do their evil bidding," Perkins said on "Fox News Sunday."
When the Court in 1973 "imposed abortion on the nation" it was to "resolve the issue," Perkins said. "Forty-one years later, that issue is now a political issue in every election from president on down."

Daniela Liverani suffered from a persistent nosebleed for over a month in which she thought it was because of a recent motorbike crash while travelling to Asia.
To her surprise, the British backpacker found out that there was a three-inch long leech that had been living in her nose for over a month.
A few days after returning back home to Edinburgh, she saw a dark object in one of her nostrils that she thought was just dried up blood.
The 24-year-old explained,
"I tried to blow it out and grab it but I couldn't get a grip of him before he retreated back up my nose.

Majority of Americans Want Flights Banned From Ebola Countries
A majority of Americans support banning all flights to the United States from countries experiencing an Ebola outbreak, an exclusive NBC News online survey reveals.
The survey, which was conducted by SurveyMonkey and then weighted for age, race, sex, education and region to match U.S. Census data, found that 58 percent of Americans want a ban on incoming flights from West African countries hardest hit by the virus, such as Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. Twenty percent of respondents opposed a travel ban, and the rest said they didn’t know. The survey was conducted a day before the first person diagnosed with Ebola inside the U.S. died Wednesday.

Who Has the Cheapest Homeowners Insurance in Maryland?
While Maryland is the 20th cheapest state for homeowners insurance in the US, there are a handful of areas which are more expensive than others in the state. ValuePenguin conducted a recent analysis on these rates in Maryland to help determine which cities had the most affordable rates (and which were the most expensive)! Overall, the average rate in the state (assuming $100,000 in liability coverage) was $1,236 with the most expensive city costing $1,766 and the cheapest costing $649.
Most Expensive Cities in Maryland for Homeowners Insurance
Looking at the 5 most expensive cities in Maryland for home insurance, you'll notice that they are all (with the exception of Rockville) coastal cities that touch the Atlantic Ocean or Chesapeake Bay. Because of this these towns are more exposed to large storms and even hurricanes that work their way up the eastern seaboard bringing with them damaging wind and rain.

Two “Harmless” Unaccompanied Illegal Kids Escaped Facility and Carjacked a 91 Year Old Navy Vet
How many times were we told that the “unaccompanied minors” flooding across our southern border were just harmless children who deserved our sympathy because of the poverty and squalor they had been forced to endure in their native countries? All that really tugs at the heart strings, until you realize that not all of those minors are small children, and in this case, at least two of them are capable of abhorrent crime.
Two teenage illegals broke out of a detention facility in Illinois and carjacked a 91-year-old Navy veteran who was picking up a prescription at a local Walmart.
The good news is that the two Guatemalans, ages 16 and 17, were eventually caught, according to an exclusive report in The Daily Mail. The bad news is that despite their crimes, they will remain in the United States.
In a desperate attempt to keep up with the surge of unaccompanied Central American children illegally crossing into the United States through Mexico, the Obama administration has been flying the minors to detention centers across the country for processing and housing if they have no U.S. family to take them in.

What Happens if Republicans Win
It’s time for Republicans to give serious thought to what happens if they win the Senate and House this November, as it looks increasingly that they will. While not exactly Pyrrhic, this victory will present a whole range of potential problems and traps that could negatively affect this country’s future and the world. And as we know, we are living in precarious times.
Barack Obama is a man unaccustomed to losing. Life has been exceptionally kind to him, sailing, as he did, through balmy Oahu sunsets, college, law school and career on into the presidency with scarcely a bump. He has been a protected man beyond any in recent memory, feted and praised virtually everywhere he went until the last couple of years. Even now, despite catastrophe after catastrophe, there are acolytes who continue to celebrate him, paying tens of thousands merely to have their photographs taken with him.
When such cosseted people are forced to confront failure, they typically do not do so with grace. They are rarely able to admit fault, as if even a crack in their pristine facades could lead to extreme personality disintegration. We have already seen manifestations of this in Obama’s refusal to acknowledge something so obvious as his own inability to foresee the dangers of ISIS, aka the JV team. Insider books by Robert Gates, Hillary Clinton and Leon Panetta have appeared in rapid succession, implying or directly alleging that the president lives in a bubble, unwilling to listen to advice. He frequently threatens to — and sometimes does — go around the Congress to get his way via, often unconstitutional, executive fiat. We all know that he lies, constantly.
This man is angry but highly unlikely to go into an anger management program. Imagine what will happen after November. We could be looking at behavior that would fit the very definition of “acting out,” anti-social but on a global scale. And he still has two more years in office.

BLACK THUG MURDERS NEWLYWED SOLDIER THEN EXECUTES PREGNANT WIFE – RACE BAITERS SILENT!
The Colorado teen accused of murdering a newlywed soldier and his pregnant wife was found guilty Tuesday following a 12-day trial, officials report.
Macyo Joelle January, 19, was found guilty of murdering Staff Sgt. David Dunlap, 37, and his pregnant wife Whitney Butler, 35, after the two walked in on him burglarizing their Colorado Springs home Jan. 14, 2013.
Police say that the newlyweds arrived home separately to check on the alarm that went off at 11:10am.
Dunlap and Butler were both shot from behind as they walked through the front door. Officials say evidence suggests that Butler was shot in the head as she leaned over her husband’s dead body, according to The Gazette.

Details of How Mandatory Ebola Vaccines Will Soon Be a Reality
My friend and broadcast colleague, John Moore, attempted to reach me today by phone. Unfortunately, I was not able to call Mr. Moore back. I was unable to hear Mr. Moore’s message until after he would have retired for the evening as I am two time zones behind him. As I listened to John’s groundbreaking broadcast of his morning show during the wee hours of the morning, I know why John reached out to me.
This morning, I received a message that I was to meet a familiar party at a familiar location where “many previously held secrets would be revealed”. I was not allowed to take my cell phone to the meeting which is why I did not receive John’s message in a timely fashion. The meeting consisted of four people, one of which, has been a primary source of information for me on a variety of national security issues covering the last several years. This source has never been wrong.

Mexico paying to stop U.S. from deporting illegals
You can’t make this stuff up. Instead of trying to help their own citizens, and improve the country, the government of Mexico is funneling money to its citizens living illegally in the U.S. to get them to stay in the U.S.
Breitbart has the story,
According to a report from National Public Radio, the Mexican government through its 50 consulates around the United States has been helping to fund low-income illegal immigrants to apply for President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA — which shields illegal immigrants from deportation and allows them to work in the U.S.
NPR’s report details the story of Tania Guzman, an illegal immigrant who said the cost of applying for DACA worried her, but she was able to afford it after her pro-bono lawyer from Public Counsel told her she could access financial help from the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles.
Mexico paid for all Guzman’s attorney fees and application fees, according to NPR. In the end Guzman told NPR she paid just $50.
The report explains that since 2012, the year DACA began, the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles has assisted more then 260 Mexican illegal immigrants apply for protections under DACA.

WHISTLEBLOWER: OBAMA BLOCKING VOTER ROLL CLEANUP
With critical midterm elections less than four weeks away, the failure to scrutinize voter registrations and clean up voter rolls leaves our system vulnerable to voter fraud, and a Justice Department whistleblower says the Obama administration is actively trying to stop states from bringing records up to date and ensure only eligible voters are casting ballots.
J. Christian Adams further asserts that voter fraud does occur and is indirectly responsible for the passage of Obamacare.
Adams is author of “Crimes Against the Republic: How the Democratic Party’s Voter Fraud is Fundamentally Transforming America.” He left the Justice Department early in the Obama administration and has regularly spoken out about what he considers to be partisan actions by Attorney General Eric Holder on voting and other civil rights issues.

Ebola Threatens Chocolate
Ebola is threatening much of the world’s chocolate supply.
Ivory Coast, the world’s largest producer of cacao, the raw ingredient in M&M’s, Butterfingers and Snickers Bars, has shut down its borders with Liberia and Guinea, putting a major crimp on the workforce needed to pick the beans that end up in chocolate bars and other treats just as the harvest season begins. The West African nation of about 20 million — also known as Côte D’Ivoire — has yet to experience a single case of Ebola, but the outbreak already could raise prices.
The world’s chocolate makers have taken notice.
The World Cocoa Foundation is working now to collect large donations from Nestlé, Mars and many of its 113 other members for its Coca Industry Response to Ebola Initiative. The initiative hasn’t been publicly unveiled, but the WCF plans to announce details Wednesday, during its annual meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark, on how the money will fuel Red Cross and Caritas Internationalis work to help the infected and staunch Ebola’s spread.

Muslims Demand That Obama DOJ Investigate Woman Who Declared Her Business A ‘Muslim Free Zone’
Jan Morgan, owner of Gun Cave Indoor Fire Range in Hot Springs, Arkansas has declared her business a “Muslim Free Zone.”
But Morgan says it wasn’t because she is“Islamophobic” as the left is now accusing her. She’s said she has experience to back that ban up.
Morgan has spoken out for years on her well-read blog out about the Koran’s verses of violence — and has received numerous death threats from Muslims for it. She cited an incident where “two Muslim men came into her store with an allah akbar ringtone”. They could barely speak English and were trying to “rent and shoot guns”, even though they had no proof of U.S. citizenship, according to blogger Hannah Bleau. It greatly disturbed many patrons, as you might imagine. (Morgan lays out a detailed rationale for the ban here).
Morgan is a certified firearms instructor, and says the ATF tells them to use their discretion when allowing people to purchase and use weapons.

More than a dozen states plan to cancel health care policies not in compliance with ObamaCare
More than a dozen states plan to cancel health care policies not in compliance with ObamaCare in the coming weeks, affecting thousands of people just before the midterm elections.
"It looks like several hundred thousand people across the country will receive notices in the coming days and weeks," said Jim Capretta of the Ethics and Public Policy Center.
The policies are being canceled because states that initially granted a reprieve at the request of President Obama are no longer willing to do so.
In coming weeks, 13 states and the District of Columbia plan to cancel such policies, which generally fall out of compliance with the Affordable Care Act because they don’t offer the level of coverage the law requires.
Virginia will be hardest hit, with 250,000 policies expected to be canceled.
And because federal law requires a 60-day notice of any plan changes, voters will be notified no later than November 1, right before the Nov. 4 midterms.

An Ebola Outbreak Would Be Advantageous For Globalists
It’s sad to say with such finality, but a universal fact of existence is that most of the people you meet in this life are fundamentally and functionally ignorant. Not necessarily stupid, but certainly ignorant. Ignorance comes not from a lack of intelligence, but from a denial of knowledge and truth. That is to say, ignorance takes hold when people decide to act as though they know and understand a thing, even if they do not. Ignorance prevails when a society or nation chooses to value the appearance of expertise, to value the theater of overconfidence, and to cheer for the bluster of morons rather than admit that they have unanswered questions on subjects they do not yet grasp. For nothing is worse for the self absorbed than to acknowledge that they do not know.
Entire nations have fallen throughout history because of this terrible weakness…
By extension, such ignorance is not just an inherent disease but also an easily exploitable disease. When we refuse to think critically and examine our surroundings thoroughly, we become like grazing gazelles oblivious to the predators encircling us in the tall grass. And, just as there are predatory individuals that hide amongst us, there are are also predatory oligarchs that camouflage themselves as benevolent politicos and financial professionals standing above us. Normal predators we fear, establishment predators we invite into our homes as protectors, saviors, and partners.
The disease of ignorance leaves us vulnerable to many other plagues, including literal plagues like the Ebola virus. When we take the establishment at its word concerning the threat of Ebola outbreak, we make ourselves vulnerable. When people assume that the worst could never happen to them, history shows us that it inevitably does.

Remembering the Battle of Tours
The month of October marks the anniversary of an epic event that unfortunately is no longer widely known but which nonetheless shaped the future of the Western world, and which may still hold inspiration for the West today.
After the death of the Muslim prophet Muhammad in 632, Islam spread like a bloody tide throughout the Arabian peninsula, north to the Caspian Sea and east through Persia and beyond, westward through Egypt and across North Africa all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. From there it crossed the Straits of Gibraltar and consumed all of the Iberian peninsula, or al-Andalus as the Saracens called it. In a mere one hundred years, Muhammad’s aggressive legacy was an empire larger than Rome’s had ever been.
By 732 that fallen Roman empire had devolved into a patchwork of warring barbarian tribes. When Abd-ar-Rahman, the governor of al-Andalus, crossed the Pyrenees with the world’s most successful fighting force and began sweeping through the south of what would become France toward Paris, there was no nation, no central power, no professional army capable of stopping them.

Homeland Security chief admits four Kurdish terrorists DID slip across Mexican border but denies ISIS members crossed
The U.S. Homeland Security chief has flatly denied that ISIS members crossed the Mexican border into Texas – as conservative lawmakers claimed – but did admit that four Kurdish terrorists did slip through.
DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson was forced to deny that 10 people linked to ISIS had entered Texas after Republican Representative Duncan Hunter made the startling claim on Fox News on Tuesday.
But on Thursday, Johnson conceded that four members the Kurdistan Workers' Party, known as the PKK, were arrested in September trying to enter the United States illegally from Mexico.
The PKK, a separatist group in Turkey, is deemed a 'foreign terrorist organization' by the U.S. government – but it has allied itself with other Kurdish groups fighting ISIS.

World War II-era Airplanes Fly Over Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery To Honor Disabled Veterans
WASHINGTON (AP) - Twenty-four World War II-era airplanes flew over Washington in honor of Disabled American Veterans.
The planes originated from the Culpeper Regional Airport and flew in formation down the Potomac River on Sunday. Planes could be seen soaring over the Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon.
The airplanes were T-6 Texan aircraft, the same models used to train pilots during World War II. Those airplanes are now commonly used in movies and during airshows.

Republicans Are Now The Majority In Worcester County
The Worcester County Republican Central Committee is pleased to announce that, according to the Board of Elections, Republicans are now the majority of registered voters in Worcester County.
This means that 13 of the 24 jurisdictions in Maryland are majority Republican. In addition, Republicans hold the majority of local elected offices in the state.
This is good news for Maryland as we attempt to undo the damage inflicted on our businesses and economy over the last few years.
Local Democrat Politician Responds To Invitation
Thanks for the invitation. I'm going to call this one as I see it.
I would attend if this were to include other candidates, but this is too one-sided for me and appears to me to be more of a Brown vote-generating campaign stop than a true informational event. The worth of having more than one candidate present is evident, while not having other candidates or serially bringing them does not provide a fair, clear, balanced or comprehensive picture to the electorate.

(MT. AIRY, MD) -- On the evening of October 12, 2014, Maryland State Police “Trooper 3,” an AW-139 helicopter based in Frederick, Maryland, was returning from a medevac mission. While “Trooper 3” was in the vicinity of MD Route 27 and MD Route 144 in Carroll County, a green flash illuminated the cockpit of the aircraft from the north. The aircraft received approximately three more flashes consistent with that of a laser pointer. The crew was able to determine the residence the laser was originating from.
The flight crew contacted the Maryland State Police Westminster Barrack to request assistance to identify possible suspects at the residence. Upon arrival of patrol troopers from the Westminster Barrack, an investigation determined a 12-year-old male had shined a green handheld astronomy laser at the aircraft. Further investigation will be handled by Maryland State Police Westminster Barrack and federal authorities.
The dangers of illuminating an aircraft with a laser cannot be overstated. A laser illumination in the cockpit can cause temporary visual impairment for both pilots and aircrew members. The distraction, disorientation, and discomfort caused by a laser illumination can create a hazardous situation for helicopter crews performing critical flight operations. Targeting an aircraft with a laser is both a state and federal crime punishable by large fines and jail time.

Salisbury Zoo Receives a Male Red Wolf
SALISBURY, MD – This past Friday the Salisbury Zoo received a four year old male red wolf from the Endangered Wolf Center in Eureka, MO. “Scout”, who was born at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo, was chosen as a good genetic match for the Salisbury Zoo’s female wolf. Scout was introduced to the Zoo’s red wolf enclosure on Saturday and now can be seen there as he settles into his new home. The red wolf exhibit, along with the Richard and Patricia Hazel Delmarva Trail at the Salisbury Zoo, was built in 2006 thanks to a donation from the Hazel family.
The red wolf is an endangered species that once was classified as extinct in the wild. The Salisbury Zoo is one of 43 facilities participating in the Red Wolf Species Survival Program. Through coordinated captive breeding programs zoos help to maintain healthy and genetically diverse animal populations within the zoo community and to reintroduce the animal into the wild. Through the pioneering work of the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium and the collaboration of organizations like the U.S Fish & Wildlife Service and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums every effort is made to ensure sound conservation approaches to the recovery of the red wolf. With such a small population of red wolves, finding animals that have genetic compatibility is very complex and time consuming. Debbie Graham, the Salisbury Zoo’s veterinarian technician, is the Zoo’s representative for this important program.
This past July the Salisbury Zoo lost their female red wolf, the mother of five red wolf pups born at the Salisbury Zoo on May 4, 2008. The father of that litter was successfully reintroduced back into the wild at the Alligator River National Refuge center in North Carolina. All but one of the 5 offspring were transferred to other breeding facilities. The one remaining female offspring was selected this past July at the Red Wolf Recovery program meeting in Akron, Ohio as a good genetic match to pair with the male from the Endangered Wolf Center. Thanks to the hard work of these organizations the world’s population of red wolves has risen from a low of 14 individuals to about 100 red wolves in the wild and 200 in captive breeding facilities throughout the United States.

Judge declares a mistrial in the case of a police officer who shot dead a seven-year old-girl during bungled police raid for a murder suspect
A trial against a Detroit police officer accused of shooting dead a seven-year-old girl ended in a mistrial after the jury became 'hopelessly deadlocked.'
The jurors were unable to reach a verdict in the case against Officer Joseph Weekley who was accused of shooting Aiyana Stanley-Jones during a raid on a house for a murder suspect in Detroit.
Judge Cynthia Gray Hathaway declared a mistrial in the case for the second time after the first trial ended in a hung jury in June 2013.

Mexican Gov't Paying to Help Its Citizens Avoid Deportation from the U.S.
A controversial program created by the Obama administration allows unauthorized immigrants to avoid deportation and even get work permits to stay in the U.S. for two years.
Since 2012, nearly 600,000 people have received Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status, but a new report claims that the Mexican government actually pays the $465 application fee for many immigrants and, in some cases, even the more expensive fees to hire an immigration attorney.
Jordan Sekulow joined Peter Johnson Jr. on Fox and Friends Weekend and explained that the Mexican government has acknowledged that it runs a program in 50 consulates across the U.S. to help Mexican immigrants receive DACA status.

Outrage as U.S. Airways attendant refuses to let veteran hang up his medal-filled jacket to stop it creasing - telling him closet service is for first-class passengers only
US Airways has sparked outrage after a flight attendant allegedly refused to hang up an Army Ranger and combat veteran's jacket to stop it from creasing.
First Sergeant Albert Marle was wearing a jacket lined with medals when he boarded Flight 1930 from Portland, Oregon, to Charlotte, North Carolina, yesterday.
But when he asked an attendant to hang up his 'Dress Blues' uniform, she reportedly refused, saying the coat closet was for first-class passengers only and he was seated in coach.

China Officially Overtakes US Economy - Set to be 20% larger than US by 2019
'The days when the IMF, World Bank, and U.S. Treasury could essentially dictate international finances and intimidate or crush opponents ... are drawing to a close.'
China has overtaken the United State to become the world's largest economy, according to new data and an analysis by the International Monetary Fund.
Calculated by looking at gross domestic product (GDP) alongside cost-of-living data, the IMF announced Tuesday that China is now larger economically than the U.S. for the first time in history with an adjusted GDP of $17.6 trillion compared to a U.S. GDP of $17.4 trillion.
The milestone has been forecast for some time, but the conclusion of the IMF—presented in its 2014 World Economic Outlook report—comes as other economic indicators suggest a global shakeup in the world economy may be upon us. As the Financial Times reports, "the speed of [China's] transformation" is what's most" breathtaking" considering that "as recently as 2005, China’s economy was less than half the size of America’s." Additionally, the IMF now projects that "China’s economy will be 20 percent bigger than that of the U.S. by 2019."

Five-year-old who pretended her crayon was a gun is forced to sign contract by her kindergarten promising not to kill others or herself
An Alabama mom is furious that her five-year-old daughter was forced to sign a contract saying she will not hurt herself or anyone at school after she pointed a crayon at a classmate.
The incident occurred at E.R. Dickson Elementary School in Mobile.
The mom, only identified as Rebecca, said the school asked her toddler, Elizabeth, whether she was depressed, which the little girl did not understand.
'They told me she drew something that resembled a gun,' Rebecca told WPMI-TV.
'According to them she pointed a crayon at another student and said, ''pew pew''.'

Document Shows Clinton Pressured Glendening during Lewinsky Scandal
WASHINGTON -- At the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal an aide in the Clinton White House reached out to Maryland Gov. Parris N. Glendening and asked the fellow Democrat to back off his criticism of the president, a new round of documents released by the Clinton Presidential Library on Friday show.
President Bill Clinton's former director of intergovernmental affairs, Mickey Ibarra, wrote in a Sept. 7, 1998 memo that he reached out to Glendening the day before and "delivered our message (it does not help any of us to pile on)." Ibarra said he also spoke with then-Baltimore Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke and Prince George's County Executive Wayne K. Curry.
The document offers a rare glimpse of political arm twisting at the highest levels.
"I also let [Glendening] know that Schmoke and Curry are furious with him for his actions on this and any hope of getting those two on board with his race were lost at least until after the primary," Ibarra wrote.

Rand Paul Urges Poor Americans To Give Up On Dems
Paul: "The constituencies that voted for [President Obama] aren’t doing very well...”
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, a likely 2016 hopeful, is urging middle- and working-class voters to give Republicans a chance to guide the economy.
“The constituencies that voted for [President Obama] aren’t doing very well,” Sen. Paul said in an interview with St. Louis Public Radio. Income inequality is higher in states and cities with Democratic leadership, he explained, and “ridiculous” low interest rates held in place by the Federal Reserve in recent years have artificially boosted the stock market and hurt the ability of middle- and working-class Americans to save.
“If you are unemployed or underemployed, maybe you need to look to other people and new policies,” Sen. Paul said. “Maybe you people need to give Republicans another chance if you want to improve the lot of people who are suffering.”

Chinese hotel posts hilarious sign instructing about how to use Western-style toilet
In many Asian countries, squatting --rather sitting --in the bathroom is the norm. Think two foot holders and a hole –that’s about it.
That’s why fancy Western-style seat toilets can create a little confusion, as it did at this Chinese hotel in Changde in the Hunan Province.
According to RocketNews24, a traveler found this detailed how-to poster in the bathroom --which included not putting your head in the bowl.
He decided to share it on the Internet, writing: “I thought this was so funny and was cracking up, I had to hold my stomach for 3 minutes.”

FEMA Approves Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (S.A.F.E.R.) Grant Extension
Salisbury Mayor James Ireton, Jr. and Fire Chief Richard A. Hoppes are pleased to announce that FEMA has approved a performance period extension for the Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (S.A.F.E.R.) Grant. The new grant performance period deadline is set for November 26, 2014. The original end date for the S.A.F.E.R. grant was October 16, 2014.
In 2011 the SFD applied for and was awarded $1.4 million, to fund twelve (12) uniformed firefighter/emergency medical technicians. Three of the grant funded positions were to hire three (3) personnel whose positions had been frozen since 2010 for economic reasons.
Over the two years since the grant was accepted, the department has hired nine (9) of the grant funded positions to full time permanent status. These opportunities came because of retirements and other forms of attrition experienced during the performance period. Throughout the grant performance period the department has been able to continually fill the S.A.F.E.R. positions and currently has twelve (12) filled positions.
The City will apply for additional grant funding from FEMA. However, the timing for applying for and receiving these grants has been delayed at the federal level; which has caused a significant gap between the end of the S.A.F.E.R. grant performance period and the ability to apply for and hopefully be awarded a new grant to fund these positions.
“Salisbury will be able to use unspent funds to run the S.A.F.E.R. grant for an additional 6 weeks" noted Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton. “The city is proud to have been able to hire many (9) of the original grant-funded positions to be permanent city firefighters. I have always made clear that these FEMA funds were grant monies, and would not be available in perpetuity. We are applying in the new FEMA S.A.F.E.R. grant round, which will begin in early 2015. I applaud the work of Chief Rick Hoppes for spending the grant money wisely and securing the extra 6 weeks of service from our FEMA firefighters.”

2014 Darwin Awards!
SIXTH PLACE: Goes to a San Anselmo, California man who died when he hit a lift tower at the Mammoth mountain ski area while riding down the slope on a foam pad. 22-year old David Hubal was pronounced dead at Central Mammoth Hospital. The accident occurred about 3 a.m., the Mono County Sheriff's department said. Hubal and his friends apparently had hiked up a ski run called Stump Alley and removed some yellow foam protectors from lift towers, said Lt. Mike Donnelly of the Mammoth Lakes Police Department. The pads are used to protect skiers who might hit towers. The group apparently used the pads to slide down the ski slope and Hubal crashed into a tower. It has since been investigated and determined the tower he hit was the one with its pad removed.
FIFTH PLACE: Goes to Robert Puelo, 32, was apparently being disorderly in a St. Louis market. When the clerk threatened to call the police, Puelo grabbed a hot dog, shoved it into his mouth and walked out without paying. Police found him unconscious in front of the store. Paramedics removed the six-inch wiener from his throat where it had choked him to death.
FOURTH PLACE: Goes to poacher Marino Malerba of Spain, who shot a stag standing above him on an overhanging rock and was killed instantly when it fell on him.
THIRD PLACE: "Man loses face at party" A man at a West Virginia party (probably related to the winner last year, a man in Arkansas who used the .22 bullet to replace the fuse in his pickup truck) popped a blasting cap into his mouth and bit down, triggering an explosion that blew off his lips, teeth, and tongue. Jerry Stromyer, 24, of Kincaid, bit the blasting cap as a prank during the party late Tuesday night, said Cpl. M.D. Payne. "Another man had a blasting cap in an aquarium hooked to a battery and was trying to explode it. It wouldn't go off and this guy said," I'll show you how to set it off!" He put it into his mouth, bit down and it blew all his teeth out and his lips and tongue off, Payne said. Stromyer was listed in guarded condition Wednesday with extensive facial injuries, according to a spokesperson at Charleston Area Medical Division "I just can't imagine anyone doing something like that," Payne said. (Note: Maybe that's why they call these the Darwin Awards)
SECOND PLACE: Doctors at Portland University Hospital said an Oregon man shot through the skull by a hunting arrow is lucky to be alive and will be released soon from the hospital. Tony Roberts, 25, lost his right eye last weekend during an initiation into a men's rafting club, Mountain Men Anonymous (probably known now as Stupid Mountain Men Anonymous) in Grants Pass, Oregon. A friend tried to shoot a beer can off his head, but the arrow entered Robert's right eye. Doctors said that had the arrow gone 1 millimeter to the left, a major blood vessel would have been cut and Roberts would have died instantly. Neurosurgeon, Doctor Johnny Delashaw, at the University Hospital in Portland said the arrow went through 8 to 10 inches of brain with the tip protruding at the rear of his skull, yet somehow managed to miss all major blood vessels. Delashaw also said that had Roberts tried to pull the arrow out on his own he surely would have killed himself. Roberts admitted afterwards that he and his friend had been drinking that afternoon. Said Roberts, "I feel so dumb about this."
THIS YEAR'S WINNER: John Pernicky and his friend, Sal Hawkins, of the great state of Washington, decided to attend a local Metallica concert at the George Washington amphitheater. Having no tickets (but having had 18 beers between them), they thought it would be easy to "hop" over the nine foot fence and sneak into the show. They pulled their pickup truck over to the fence and the plan was for Mr. Pernicky, who was 100 pounds heavier than Mr. Hawkins, to hop the fence and then assist his friend over. Unfortunately for (the late) Mr. Pernicky, there was a 30-foot drop on the other side of the fence.
Having heaved himself over, he found himself crashing through a tree. His fall was abruptly halted (and broken, along with his arm) by a large branch that snagged him by his shorts. Dangling from the tree with a broken arm, he looked down and saw some bushes below him. Possibly figuring the bushes would break his fall, he removed his pocket knife and proceeded to cut away his shorts to free himself from the tree.
Finally free, Mr. Pernicky crashed into holly bushes. The sharp leaves scratched his ENTIRE body and now, without the protection of his shorts, a holly branch penetrated his rectum. To make matters worse, upon landing his pocket knife penetrated his thigh.
Hawkins, seeing his friend in considerable pain and agony, threw him a rope and tried to pull him to safety by tying the rope to the pickup truck and slowly driving away. However, in his drunken haste, he put the truck into reverse and crashed through the fence, landing on his friend and killing him.
Police arrived to find the crashed pickup with its driver thrown 100 feet from the truck and dead at the scene from massive internal injuries
Upon moving the truck, they found John deceased under it half-naked, scratches on his body, a holly stick in his rectum, a knife in his thigh, and his shorts dangling from a tree branch 25 feet in the air.
Congratulations gentlemen. You win. Five more idiots have been removed from the gene pool and we are richer because of your supreme sacrifice.
