Being single could help you live longer

Stop worrying about being single – it could actually help you live longer.

You’ve probably lost track of the number of times someone has asked “so when are you going to settle down?” or “I can’t understand why a lovely girl like you is still single.”

There seems to be no end to the fairly personal reminders that you aren’t in a relationship.

But then, why should you be if you are happy doing your own thing?

And it turns out there are several health benefits to being single so if you are enjoying it, embrace it.

The 2011 census data showed that 51 percent of adults in England and Wales were single.

It was a three percent rise from the 47 percent who were single in 2001.

111-year-old woman credits whisky for her longevity

Grace Jones recently turned 111 years old — and she attributes her longevity to taking a shot of Scotch whisky every single day for the past 58 years.

“She swears by it,” Jones’ daughter, Deidre McCarthy, revealed to Inside Edition. McCarthy described her mother as a positive thinker, a go-getter, and a devotee of fashion whose sunny outlook on life keeps her going — Scotch whisky aside.

The shot-taking centenarian is referred to affectionately by friends as “Amazing Grace” because she is in excellent physical and mental health despite her age.

Look Around! Common Law Works. Government Statute Doesn’t.

How can something be considered a crime if there is no victim?

This is a problem. You can go through life making sure you don’t hurt anyone, and still break the law. Wouldn’t that be great if you could simply base your actions on common sense and respect for the standards of a community?

Instead, people must also make sure they don’t do anything labeled wrong by the government. Of course, it is impossible to know all the laws which the government has created. And what they call wrong is not always intuitive, nor offensive.

Government statute law goes beyond the resolution of disputes between individuals and groups. In contrast, the whole point of common law was to settle disputes in non-violent ways.

Now, there are third-party enforcers trolling around looking for a statute that has been broken. There doesn’t have to be a victim. No one has to have been wronged by the legal breach. They actually create conflict instead of resolving it. Their actions often lead to violent altercations, rather than deescalating disputes.

In an essay called “The Obviousness of Anarchy,” John Hasnas discusses the origins of common law, and how it was born out of anarchy. He says that clearly, no society can exist without governance. Part of the definition of a society is that it is somewhat organized and held together by common traditions. But that does not necessarily mean government, as the term has come to be understood.

"Basically Destroyed" - Puerto Rico's Back In The 18th Century

Welcome to America’s first experiment in the World Made By Hand lifestyle. Where else is it going? Watch closely.

Ricardo Ramos, the director of the beleaguered, government-owned Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, told CNN Thursday that the island’s power infrastructure had been basically “destroyed” and will take months to come back.

“Basically destroyed.” That’s about as basic as it gets civilization-wise.

Residents, Mr. Ramos said, would need to change the way they cook and cool off. For entertainment, old-school would be the best approach, he said.

“It’s a good time for dads to buy a ball and a glove and change the way you entertain your children.”

Meaning, I guess, no more playing Resident Evil 7: Biohazard on-screen because you’ll be living it - though one wonders where will the money come from to buy the ball and glove? Few Puerto Ricans will be going to work with the power off. And the island’s public finances were in disarray sufficient to drive it into federal court last May to set in motion a legal receivership that amounted to bankruptcy in all but name.

The commonwealth, a US territory, was in default for $74 billion in bonded debt, plus another $49 billion in unfunded pension obligations.

Trump Supporters Wonder Why He’s ‘Adding Another Member to the Swamp’ with Luther Strange Endorsement

Donald Trump supporters in Alabama are frustrated, McClatchy’s Katie Glueck reports. Venting Thursday night during a campaign rally for conservative Judge Roy Moore, members of Trump’s base expressed fear that their president — who’s backed Moore’s opponent, establishment candidate U.S. Senator Luther Strange, in next week’s Republican runoff — is being misled. With Moore leading in polls, Tuesday’s election has the Beltway watching in fear over future grassroots insurgent candidates who may challenge the GOP establishment.

From McClatchy:

Donald Trump is getting bad advice. He’s being misled. The D.C. “swamp” is threatening his agenda.

A sampling of the president’s most ardent supporters gathered Thursday in a sweltering train shed to puzzle—and vent—over Trump’s decision to back Sen. Luther Strange in the Republican Senate runoff here in Alabama, a race that has become the biggest disagreement to date between Trump and the most committed elements of his base.

Blowback? - Mizzou Enrollment Tumbles To Lowest Since 2008

Amid ongoing fallout from the negative media attention and student (and faculty) protests that rocked campus in 2015, the University of Missouri recently welcomed its smallest student body since 2008.

As Campus Reform has repeatedly reported, the embattled university has taken hit after hit, starting with a $32 million budget shortfalland a five-percent budget cut, followed by a seven-percent drop in freshmen enrollment heading into last school year.

As some may remember Mizzou hit the headlines after Melissa Click, a journalism professor, won infamy nationwide for her behavior during race-related protests at MU in November 2015.

Florida Residents Warned They'll Be Ticketed For Hurricane-Damaged Homes

At a time when South Floridians rocked by Hurricane Irma were still surveying the damage to their properties, the county of Miami-Dade apparently thought it appropriate to begin handing out safety notices.

Celso Perez told local WSVN-TV that he, his family, and his neighbors were starting to clear fallen trees from the streets after the storm passed through at nine in the morning on Monday. Hours later, in the afternoon, Perez got a visit from the county.

“And we thought he was here to help us or offer some type of assistance with the trees, maybe he was going to bring us ice or something,” Perez told WSVN. Instead, the official slapped a safety notice on the only part of Perez’s fence still standing.

“I laughed,” he said. “I thought he was kidding. ‘You are kidding right? We just had a hurricane six hours ago.’ ‘No, I’m not kidding. I have to cite you for this.’ I just laughed. OK, whatever; knock yourself out!”

But Perez stopped laughing when the official told him he would be writing up a report and would be back to check on the property. Perez told WSVN that the man said he’d “have to write me a fine” if the fence wasn’t up to code by then.

Protesters Interrupt Comey’s Speech At Howard University

Former FBI Director James Comey’s keynote speech at Howard University was interrupted by protesters singing “We Shall Not Be Moved.”

Comey was set to speak at Howard’s 2017-18 convocation as the school’s endowed chair of public policy, but he didn’t receive a warm welcome from some students at the historically black college.

A group of students in the back of the auditorium stood up during Comey’s speech with their fists raised to indicate “black power.” The group sang the old spiritual song, “We Shall Not Be Moved” and broke out into chants about being black.

“I said I love being black!” one protester yelled, cuing the other protesters to repeat it back. “I love the color of my skin!”

Owners Would Lose Money Signing Kaepernick

The main reason why Colin Kaepernick remains unsigned is pretty simple: money.

I threw a question to everybody on Twitter yesterday and asked, “Would you stop supporting your favorite NFL team if they signed Colin Kaepernick?”

The poll is hovering around 70 percent ceasing support for their favorite NFL team if it signed Kaepernick after 1,300 votes.

I understand that a Twitter poll is hardly scientific, but I think it’s pretty accurate when it comes to the general consensus of serious football fans. My followers on average are big football fans. They’re the type of people that buy tickets to the games, tailgate, are likely boosters at their universities and generally just care more than a casual fan.

The fact 70 percent of them would stop supporting their team is enough to give an owner a heart attack. However, for the sake of argument, lets assume that only five percent of fans would cutoff their support following the signing of Kaepernick.

He’d absolutely still not get signed because there’s not a business owner in the world willing to lose five percent of his base over one average at best employee. It’s really this simple. It’s not about racism, being blackballed or any larger conspiracy.

City Abruptly Eliminates Police Chief Finalist for Supporting Immigration Enforcement

A highly qualified and respected veteran law enforcement official with impressive credentials was precipitously eliminated as a finalist to be police chief in a U.S. city after officials discovered he endorsed immigration enforcement. Judicial Watch is investigating and has filed a public records request to obtain details about the troublesome case in which the support for the rule of law served as a disqualifier for a candidate hired to enforce the rule of law. It also marks yet another example nationwide of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness and the negative impact illegal immigration is having on taxpayers.

The unbelievable story involves the northern Colorado city of Ft. Collins’ search for a new police chief. Steve Henry, a former chief deputy for the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) in central Arizona applied for the position. The 55-year-old law enforcement veteran spent nearly two decades at PCSO, an agency with a $39 million budget that patrols a county the size of Connecticut. Henry is a U.S. Army veteran who obtained his undergraduate degree at Arizona State University and graduate degree at Northern Arizona University. He also holds a degree from the Harvard JFK School of Government and attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy. He has 23 years of continuous and stellar law enforcement service.

"Thousands Could Die" - Puerto Rico Scrambles To Evacuate River Valley As Dam Fails

Days after Hurricane Maria passed over the island and made its way west toward the Dominican Republican, Puerto Rico is still struggling with the initial response to the storm – rescuing people stranded in remote villages, and moving thousands into government shelters. Meanwhile the island's first responders are making due without electricity, gas or cell phone service after the storm dealt a knockout blow to its infrastructure.

In what was perhaps the most destructive blow to the island’s aging infrastructure, the NWS warned Friday that the Guajataca Dam in northwest Puerto Rico would soon fail, prompting the agency to issue a flash flood emergency warning for Isabela and Quebradillas municipalities. Now, authorities are scrambling to evacuate the residents of the river valley below the dam before their communities are entirely submurged. If the authorities don't act quickly, "thousands could die" one official in charge of the rescue response said.

According to federal reservoir data, the lake behind the dam, Lago de Guajataca, rose more than three feet between Tuesday and Wednesday, when the storm was still directly over the island. More recent data were unavailable. With floodwaters gushing into the Guajataca river valley, Reuters reports that emergency officials were scrambling Friday and Saturday to evacuate its nearly 70,000 residents before their villages have been completely submerged.

Video published by CBS shows waters gushing over the top of the 90-year-old dam, sending a wall of water racing into the valley below.

More evidence that couples prefer, and do better with, traditional gender roles

Women in the United States have significantly increased their labor-force participation since days past. But a new report from Pew Research Center shows that, despite these gains, Americans' view of men as breadwinners hasn't changed.

"While a nearly equal share of men and women say a man needs to be able to provide for his family to be a good husband or partner (72% and 71%, respectively), men are less likely than women to say the same about women," notes researcher Kim Parker.

This finding comes just a month after similar research was done by the University of Illinois—which I wrote about here—that suggests that some mothers' and fathers' psychological wellbeing suffers when their work and family identities conflict with conventional gender roles.

"The results supported the overarching hypothesis: well-being was lower for mothers and fathers who violated gendered expectations about the division of paid labor, and higher for parents who conformed to these expectations," said researcher Karen Kramer.

Ironically, Ivanka Trump just shared with the world this week that she had postpartum depression after the births of each of her three children.

Her explanation for why she was depressed was as follows:

Puerto Rico airport now open to military relief flights

Puerto Rico's main airport in San Juan opened Friday to military relief flights after the territory was battered this week by Hurricane Maria, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The Corps is planning to set up a headquarters at the airport as it assesses the storm's damage and will work with the territory's governor on the next step for the relief efforts, said Brig. Gen. Diana Holland, the commander of U.S. Army Corps' South Atlantic Division.

Some commercial flights were also landing at San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, according to media reports.

In Indiana, Mike Pence asks Democrat Joe Donnelly for his vote on tax reform

Vice President Mike Pence asked Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly in person Friday in their home state of Indiana for his vote on tax legislation.

"Senator Donnelly, we need your help, too," Pence said in Anderson.

"Joe, let's decide today: We're going to get this tax cut done, and we're going to get it done together," Pence added.

Pence's visit is the first effort by the White House to lean on Donnelly, one of the centrist Democrats in the upper chamber and one who would likely be vulnerable in the 2018 elections. President Trump is scheduled to visit Indianapolis next week to rally for tax reform.

Donnelly is one of three Senate Democrats who did not sign a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell this summer outlining opposition to any tax reform that cut taxes for the wealthy or added to the deficit.

The Republicans have not released legislation or even a tax plan for Donnelly to support. Next week, the administration and congressional GOP leaders plan to release more information about their intentions for legislation.

On Friday, however, Pence did not hesitate to raise expectations, saying that they would cut taxes for all businesses and for "working families," while simplifying the tax code.

Scalise Gives First Public Remarks Since Shooting: I Can’t Wait to ‘Get Back Home’

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R., La.) on Thursday night gave his first address to a public audience since he was shot in the hip in June, telling Louisianans he cannot wait to "get back home."

"I wish I could be there in person but I'm still recovering at a rehabilitation hospital and I can tell you, I cannot wait til the day that I can get back home," Scalise said in a pre-recorded message played at the Louisiana Family Forum's annual legislative awards gala. The organization was honoring Scalia with its "Gladiator Award."

The audience at the socially-conservative Christian Family Forum's event, which included several high-profile Louisiana politicians, gave Scalise a long standing ovation, according to the Advocate, a Baton Rouge-based newspaper.

Scalise remains in inpatient rehab in Washington, D.C., after he was discharged from MedStar Washington Hospital Center in July.

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip in June by a gunman who targeted a GOP congressional baseball practice in Alexandra, Va. He was quickly rushed to the hospital in critical condition after the shooting.

Sen. Rand Paul (R,. Ky.) was practicing along with Scalise at the time and said the shooting would have been a "massacre" if Capitol Hill Police had not saved their lives.

Oregon Dems Push Phony Precedent To Block Ninth Circuit Court Nominee

Oregon's two Democratic senators are blocking one of President Trump's judicial nominees with claims that a "longstanding" state tradition mandating that nominees be chosen from their "judicial selection committee" was violated, but the tradition they cite has never applied to picks for the U.S. Circuit Court, according to records viewed by the Washington Free Beacon.

Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley alerted the White House that they would be blocking the nomination of Oregon native Ryan Bounds for a seat on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Bounds is currently serving as assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.

"We cannot return a blue slip on any judicial nominee that has not been approved by our bipartisan judicial selection committee," the senators wrote in a letter to the White House referencing the informal "blue slip" process by which senators are able to block nominations of judges from their home state.

"We have a long history of organizing a committee charged with thoroughly vetting applicants from the Oregon legal community," the senators wrote. "We do not intend to return our blue slips for Ryan Bounds or any other nominee that has not been selected through our judicial selection process."

Though Wyden and Merkley refer to this selection process as a "longstanding" tradition, records show that nominees for the U.S. Circuit Court such as Bounds have never been selected in this fashion.

Only establishes command once asked by central if he had command. Meanwhile equipment is responding, Records advises under control, however notifies Engine Tanker 1-1 on radio to investigate the 2nd floor, middle way, smoke coming from door possible food on stove ... he returned all equipment except engine and truck which was duty crew. All equipment was put in service before an engine crew investigated.

Anyone else think this is a little hinky? Why would you cancel man power and water that was already responding WITHOUT completing a proper investigation to determine the exact cause of smoke? What would have happened if it really was a fire? Is Records just trying to play hero again and not follow SOP's? Rather interesting how he cancelled the volunteer response, makes one wonder his motives and whether or not he is deliberately not utilizing a valuable resource of the volunteers. This man is going to get someone seriously injured or worse if these antics continue.

Trump admin fighting FOR Hillary secrecy

President Donald Trump’s Justice Department will defend against efforts to unseal a draft Whitewater indictment against “Crooked Hillary,” despite repeated promises to “lock her up” on the campaign trail.

“Push to unseal the draft Whitewater indictment against Hillary Clinton gets court date,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton tweeted on Wednesday.
Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group, filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the National Archives and Records Administration in 2015 for the draft indictments of Hillary Clinton from the Whitewater scandal in the 1990s, and later sued for the records when the government refused to release them, McClatchy DC reports.

According to Judicial Watch:

The draft indictments relate to allegations that Clinton provided false information and withheld evidence from federal investigators to conceal her involvement with the defunct Madison Guaranty Savings & Loan, the collapse of which lead to multiple criminal convictions. Clinton provided legal representation to Madison Guaranty as an attorney at the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock, Arkansas. Clinton’s Rose Law Firm billing records, long sought by prosecutors, were found in the private quarters of the White House shortly after an important statute of limitations had expired.

Los Zetas Cartel Stockpiling Weapons near Texas Border

Members of the Los Zetas cartel continue their efforts to stockpile weapons near the Texas border. In the most recent failed attempt, authorities seized numerous assault rifles and body armor.

Officials made the seizure when members of the cartel hunting police unit Fuerza Coahuila found a weapons cache hidden along a dirt road by the waters of the Rio Grande border with Texas. Ciudad Acuña is immediately south of Del Rio, Texas, and is a known drug and human smuggling corridor originally used by the Los Zetas drug cartel. It is currently used by their offshoot faction the Cartel Del Noreste (CDN).

The state police found the cache after conducting an intense series of intelligence-driven operations in an attempt to locate various hideouts used by CDN gunmen. Inside the weapons cache, authorities found several sets of body armor with the Z/ CDN logo painted on them, four .308 caliber FAL rifles, two AK-47 rifles, more than 800 rounds of ammunition, and radio communications equipment.

In July, the Mexican military in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, seized a massive weapons cache at a cartel stash house in that border city..

A third deadline has now passed for the FBI and Justice Department to give the House Intelligence Committee subpoenaed documents related to the Trump dossier. And for a third time, the bureau has not produced the material.

The dossier is a collection of what former FBI Director James Comey called "salacious and unverified" allegations of collusion between Russia and Trump campaign figures in the 2016 campaign. The Russia allegations were compiled by a former British spy, Christopher Steele, who was commissioned by the opposition research firm Fusion GPS, which is thought to have been paid for the work by wealthy supporters of Hillary Clinton. The FBI reportedly considered taking over the dossier project in the fall of 2016, when the campaign was at its height, leading Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley to say the dossier matter raised "questions about the FBI's independence from politics."

Senate Republicans Refuse to Be Led by Democrat Gary Cohn on Tax Reform

Making lifelong Democrat Gary Cohn the White House lead on tax reform was always a risky strategy. Democrats were unlikely to cooperate with the administration on anything and Republican lawmakers instinctively distrusted Cohn’s motives and positions.

What’s more, Cohn and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin are political neophytes, unaccustomed to the ways of Washington and not familiar with the positions staked out by various interest groups. Many in Washington do not see them as long-term players in politics, expecting them to exit the administration and national politics before the midterm elections, if not earlier.

This has made them vulnerable to being out-maneuvered by lobbyists, lawmakers, and other long term inhabitants of the nation’s capital.

Not surprising, then, that Republicans are already publicly balking at the supposed leadership of Cohn and Mnuchin:

A Viewer Writes: Salisbury Zoo Wallaby's Enclosure

How long does it take to build an enclosure for Wallaby's? 2 years? 3 years? And in the meantime they are still living in a over sized dog like kennel hidden in the back of the zoo by the Administration building. The owls are prisoners in a dog kennel that is only 4-5 feet high. They are stuck perched on a branch in the kennel. How long are they going to be subjected to this inhumane treatment? 2 years? 3 years?

A Viewer Writes: Dead Prairie Dogs?

Do the Prairie Dogs even exist anymore? Only thing in their pit are 2 dead branches? Did they all die in the last flood? Has anyone seen a prairie dog since the last flood?

Publishers Notes: Yes, they are all dead. While the City & Zoo publicly stated no animals died in the last storm, they lied and always do. The Prairie Dogs go under ground and unfortunately their burrows collapse. There is a specific type of soil they are supposed to be using but to save time and especially money the Idiots at the Zoo add sand to their soil, eliminating any stability and they die.

Hillary's Espionage and the Statute of Limitations

Alger Hiss was a U.S. State Department official who was accused in 1948 of being a Soviet spy. Hiss's indictment stemmed from alleged espionage in the form of secret State Department documents spirited out of Foggy Bottom and into the hands of persons "not authorized to receive" them. "The Pumpkin Papers" consisted of sixty-five pages of retyped secret State Department documents, four pages in Hiss's own handwriting of copied State Department cables, and five rolls of developed and undeveloped 35mm film.

Being charged under the Espionage Act was appropriate for those who obtained any information relating to the national defense and delivered that information to someone who was not authorized to have it. The former State Department official, Alger Hiss, typed classified information on his office typewriter, slipped the copies into a briefcase, removed classified information from the State Department, and provided all of this to his Soviet handler, who photographed and microfilmed it. The FBI wished to prosecute Alger Hiss for espionage, but the Justice Department indicated that the statute of limitations had run out, and Hiss was convicted of the lesser crime, perjury, for lying to the FBI.

Trump doubles down on tirade against NFL anthem kneelers

President Donald Trump continued his Twitter war with the NFL on Saturday, this time taking aim at Commissioner Roger Goodell for permitting players to protest by kneeling during the national anthem.

‘Roger Goodell of NFL just put out a statement trying to justify the total disrespect certain players show to our country,’ the president tweeted. ‘Tell them to stand!’

Earlier on Saturday, Trump doubled down on his criticism of NFL players who refuse to stand during the national anthem, despite fierce backlash from the league and players.

'If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the national anthem,' he said on Twitter Saturday afternoon.

Trump: BOYCOTT NFL teams if players won't stand for Anthem

President Donald Trump has ratcheted up the national controversy over black National Football League players who refuse to stand while the U.S. National Anthem is played before games.

During a Friday night political rally in Alabama, Trump called on fans to boycott teams that allow players to engage in that particular form of protest.

The league's TV ratings have slid since quarterback Colin Kaepernick, then the leader of the San Francisco 49ers, began the trend in September 2016.

'Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, "Get that son of a b***h off the field right now! He is fired. He's fired!"' Trump boomed.

His crowd applauded and chanted 'USA! USA!'

Would The National Folk Festival In Salisbury Be illegal?

Were you taken by surprise several months ago when Jake Day announced that the City has agreed with the group that sponsors the National Folk Festival to hold the event in Salisbury for three consecutive years, 2018-2020? If so, you’re not alone, because it seems there was no prior public discussion about the City submitting an application, nor any consideration by the City Council, much less a decision by the Jakettes to approve that undertaking.

Two things are emerging about the City’s involvement in this prospective fiasco.

It may not be legal for the City to allow for the use of City property or provide funding, unless the City Council approves whatever commitment Day has made on behalf of the City. No doubt he has kept the Jakettes informed by private discussion, and maybe they have consented to the commitment without any public notice or meeting, which could also be unlawful.

Just as important, this scenario shows how public business is conducted in Salisbury – with as little public knowledge and input as possible – under the current Mayor and Council. Shortly after Day’s announcement that it’s a done deal, the budget was amended with almost no advanced notice to approve using money that had been appropriated in the current budget for the police and fire departments to pay a “manager” for the festival. We can look forward to more of these quickie maneuvers to pay costs of this event unless it is derailed.

It may not be too late to convince the group that sponsors the National Folk Festival to revoke its agreement with Salisbury to hold the event here, if enough persons contact that group. Here’s how to do that:

National Council for the Traditional Arts (NCTA)
8757 Georgia Ave, Suite 450
Silver Spring, MD 20910 USA
Phone: 301-565-0654
Fax: 301-565-0472
Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern, M-F
General inquiries: info@ncta-usa.org

And all County residents, not just those in Salisbury, can contact the County Executive and members of the County Council to urge that they advise that group now, rather than later, that County facilities and funds will not be available for the festival, and that County personnel will not be provided for related services. And you can urge Sheriff Lewis to send a similar message regarding his office and deputies, except for emergency services.

Because attendance at the event would certainly overwhelm the City’s fire and EMS personnel, volunteer stations throughout the county would be wise to also inform the group mentioned above that they may be unable to provide those services without jeopardizing residents of the areas that they serve.

Trump Responds To NFL, NBA Player Backlash: "Find Something Else To Do!"

Having set social media on fire following his withdrawal of Golden State Warriors' NBA super star Stephen Curry's invitation to The White House and for slamming NFL players for kneeling during the National Anthem (and the reactions of the NFL owners), President Trump has responded to the outpouring of abuse for his demands...We suspect this is far from over!!
