Mayor’s Statement on Salisbury Homicides

“The Salisbury community has been shaken by 3 homicides over the past 36 hours. The Salisbury Police Department preemptively began the investigations into these homicides on 7/18/10, even before the coroner’s office ruled them to be as such.

Immediately the SPD called in their partners with the following jurisdictions: Maryland State Police-Homicide Unit, Gang Unit, and Crime Scene Unit, Maryland State Apprehension Team, Wicomico County Bureau of Investigation, Wicomico County Narcotics Task Force, and Wicomico Sheriff’s Department Deputies and K9 Units. I thank the State’s Attorney, the Sheriff, and MSP Barracks Commander for quickly partnering with us as our investigations began. An examination of the calls for service to Emory Court, the location of the double homicide, show 283 calls for service to the street in the last 2 years.

I assure the community of my confidence in our police department and in the partnerships that our Safe Streets Coalition creates. I ask the public to have confidence knowing that every lead is being investigated, every witness interviewed, and every person of interest is being tracked down.”

Supreme Court Police Ban Praying on Courthouse Steps

What happened to the First Amendment?

Nathan Kellum, an attorney with the Alliance Defense Fund, said on May 5 of this year Mrs. Rigo and her class from Wickenburg Christian Academy in Wickenburg, Ariz., visited the Supreme Court for an educational tour. While standing on the Oval Plaza of the Court steps, the group began to pray quietly. Despite having prayed on Court grounds without incident during a previous trip, a Supreme Court police officer interrupted the prayer, informed the group they could not pray in that location, and guided them toward the street.

Lost Dog

Hi,

I am frantically searching for a lost dog. He has been spotted off of Adkins Road and on Canterbury. Gareth is a two year old Irish Red & White Setter. He is white with red patches, approximately 26 inches at the shoulder. Several people I spoke with suggested that you could possibly help. I have attached two pictures taken when he was a bit younger. Any help you can provide would be very greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Does GOP Truly Want Kagan Stopped?

It continues to be possible for Republicans to pull the plug on the nomination of Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court, according to the chief of an organization that advocates for families and their interests.

Calling her the "most liberal, unconstitutional nominee we've ever seen," Randy Thomasson of SaveCalifornia.com, says Republican senators have the power, even in the minority, to stop Kagan in committee by objecting to the vote or on the Senate floor by leading a filibuster.

The organization also reported that under Senate rules, specifically Rule IV, there also could be a filibuster in committee.

Further, he said if one minority party member objects, the nomination will not come up for a vote if no Republicans vote to override the objection, and if six of seven Republican senators do not show up for the committee, there's no quorum.

Thomasson said if Republicans are successful in halting Kagan, they will prevent her influence all across American for the next 30 or 40 years.

Her nomination has not only prompted Thomasson to offer constituents a "take action" option on his SaveCalifornia.com site, it also has sparked the assembly of the "Stop Kagan Campaign."

Black USDA Official Resigns

Black USDA official resigns after admitting she only 'did enough' for white farmer
NAACP condemns remarks, saying 'her actions were shameful'
A black USDA official in Georgia has resigned after publicly admitting she didn't help a white man trying to save his farm to the "full force" of her power and instead referred him to "own of his own."

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said he had accepted Shirley Sherrod's resignation, saying there was "zero tolerance for discrimination at USDA."

The NAACP, which recently condemned racism in tea party groups , also issued a statement Monday night saying: "Racism is about the abuse of power. Sherrod had it in her position at USDA. According to her remarks, she mistreated a white farmer in need of assistance because of his race."

The Huffington Post said a YouTube video clip of her speech was first posted on the biggovernment.com blog and a report was then aired by Fox News.

Sherrod, who resigned late Monday from her job as USDA's Georgia director of rural development, is shown talking about "the first time I was faced with having to help a white farmer save his farm." Her remarks came at a local NAACP Freedom Fund banquet, which the video says took place in March this year.

She says in the clip that the farmer had tried to show he was "superior" to her.
"He had to come to me for help. What he didn't know, while he was taking all that time trying to show me he was superior to me, was I was trying to decide just how much help I was going to give him," she says in the film.

POLLITT’S APPOINTMENTS TO THE P&Z COMMISSION ARE SHOCKINGLY BAD

We recently said that Rick Pollitt’s latest nominees for the Wicomico County Planning & Zoning Commission should be rejected. We stand by that view and offer this more detailed analysis of the two persons he has selected.

Dwayne D. Lockman, Sr., is most recently a developer and contractor who surfaced here about 10 years ago. Immediately before then he owned and operated a restaurant in Pennsylvania, and previously held positions in the Clinton administration involving welfare programs and various other federal government positions pertaining to computers.

Mr. Lockman portrays his firm “Rajun Cajun, LLC” as a major developer both here and in Lumberton, North Carolina. Recent newspaper articles there report that his activity in that state is defunct, and also that a foreclosure suit has been filed against property that his firm owns in North Carolina. Apparently nobody in Pollitt’s office – including his administrative assistant, Ted Shea, who is paid more than $100,000 per year, bothered to “vet” Mr. Lockman.

The second nominee, Jacob R. Day, is a recent college student with degrees in architecture, urban design and “environmental policy,” who has worked sporadically for “think tank” or similar organizations such as “Partners for Livable Communities.” Currently he works for the “Eastern Shore Land Conservancy,” which lobbies and advocates for limited development in rural areas. Mr. Day was on the committee that Pollitt convened last year to propose new legislation to curtail development.

Mr. Day is disqualified because of his position, if not his personal views.

All In A Days Work!!!!!

Ladies & Gentlemen, the image you see above is the volume of comments that came in after we had issues yesterday with Blogger. If you'll recall, we were on and off throughout the day publishing some 300 comments, or so. However, as you can see from the numbers above, 1,626 comments were sitting there for me to moderate and quite frankly, I just don't have the time to catch up.

That being said, please accept my apologies right here and now because I simply went in there and rejected them until they were all gone. It's one thing to sit here throughout the day and moderate them but when you're hit head on with that many, I'd never catch up.

Can you feel my pain? Nevertheless, to those Nay Sayers who want to believe Salusbury News isn't what we say we are, one days worth of comments is more than you people see in an entire year!

WICOMICO COUNTY REJECTS TAX DIFFERENTIAL FOR DELMAR, FRUITLAND AND SALISBURY

Although this is not “breaking news” – it happened 3 months ago – the public is largely unaware that the County has flatly rejected a detailed analysis by highly qualified financial analysts who concluded that property owners in all three cities should pay lower real estate tax to Wicomico County because it does not furnish certain services in those cities that are provided by the city government. Here is the Executive Summary from the report as well as the County’s letter to Salisbury’s Mayor telling him to forget about it.

By the way, since Mr. Shea is not the County Executive, but rather an administrative assistance to the Executive, you wonder why he signed the letter to Mayor Ireton, rather than Rick Pollitt.

D.C. Officers Awarded $900K In Retaliation Suit

WASHINGTON (AP) - A federal jury has awarded five black city officers $900,000 after concluding that department officials retaliated against them for filing racial discrimination complaints.

The U.S. District Court jury made the determination earlier this month.

After the officers filed a racial discrimination complaint in an anonymous letter in June 2006, court documents state superiors figured out who was responsible for the letter. The officers' attorneys say the officers were then denied information that they needed to perform their jobs.

Court documents state that in the month after the officers filed official complaints with the D.C. Office of Human Rights and the federal government, they were transferred to lesser positions.
A spokeswoman says the police department plans to appeal.

It’s A TAX! – ANOTHER ObamaCare Lie

Remember when the messiah told Americans that no one earning less than $250,000 would receive a tax increase?  Remember when we were told that the ObamaCare “individual mandate” “WAS NOT a tax”?

Well … when the Obama administration is trying to defend the constitutionality of the mandate, they are telling the courts that it is a TAX.

No federal funds for abortion.  Not a tax.  Is there anything about ObamaCare that ISN’T a lie?

In Florida, Resentment Washes Ashore Along With Oil

State's longstanding wariness of offshore drilling sparks feeling of martyrdom

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. — For decades, billions poured into Gulf Coast states that allowed oil drilling off their shores. Economies grew, jobs were created and millionaires were born all along the waterfront. Everywhere, that is, except Florida.

People of all political stripes largely banded together in the Sunshine State, united in opposition to offshore drilling and confident the peninsula's $61 billion tourist-driven economy hinged on a pristine environment. Fearing the doomsday an accident could bring — or simply the sight of rigs from beaches — Florida rejected drilling.

But doomsday came anyway.

As Floridians see their white sand beaches getting fouled by the spill, many are angry at their Gulf Coast neighbors.

"They don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to crying about the oil," said Gregg Hall, a 48-year-old Pensacola Beach resident who walks the shore daily looking for signs of the spill's impact. "They contributed to it."

Resentment is brewing in the Florida Panhandle over slumping tourist dollars, a fishing industry that has been hamstrung, and the possibility of plunging property values. And while much of it is aimed at BP and the government, there is recognition that the decisions made by neighboring states have hurt Florida.

"I love Alabama and Mississippi and Louisiana, but it's Florida first for me," said Gov. Charlie Crist, who has ordered a special legislative session to consider a constitutional amendment that would let voters decide whether to permanently ban offshore drilling in state waters. "Here is the single loudest wake-up call ever as to why we've done that in Florida: Because it is not risk free."

Letter To The Editor Regarding The Salisbury Airport

I'm a weekly traveler thru SBY & have been for many, many years & I'm on a first name basis with just about everyone there. Over the years I've noticed a downward trend there. Maintenance there is getting worse not only outside but inside is horrendous. Joe, while you were there photographing the fighter, did you happen to go further into the airport to see the huge hole in the ceiling? It fell on June 6, 2010. I know because I happened to be making an unforeseen flight out that day. I'm usually on the first flight that leaves for Philadelphia at 5:50 a.m. weekly, but that Saturday (as all Saturdays) there isn't a 5:50 flight so I took the 7:30 flight. When I arrived at the airport the entire middle section of the terminal was roped off with huge ceiling tiles all over the floors as well as the seating area directly UNDER the area that fell. Had there been that 5:50 flight & people sitting there waiting for their flight, there would have been many injuries as even the metal pieces that hold up the tiles had fallen on the floor.

In talking with some employees there it is quite evident that management, such as it is, does nothing. Personally from what I've seen on tv, all Bob Bryant is interested in is giving interviews.

What kind of airport doesn't have sufficient heating/ac. Believe me when I say I've been there when it's sweltering in there with no a/c & in the winter I see employees walking around with coats on to keep warm as the heating system, again, isn't sufficient. The heating/ac system is antiquated.

While sitting there waiting for my flight I look at the skylights as well as the ventilation areas & there is so much dirt, dust & who knows...maybe mold. Is this anyway to run an airport????

It can't even hold a cafe. They now have vending machines & for the longest time there wasn't even a coffee machine. I understand from some employees that they had to go above Bob's head (which isn't very far) to get the coffee machine. But once you're in the holding area before you board the flight there are no vending machines in there. When there is a delay, it's back & forth out of that area to get something to eat & we can't being any liquids in there. I understand that Bob didn't want machines in that area. So much for customer service.

I did find out that it was a plea to the airport commissioners that got the coffee machines in there. They got the tv's in there & the people are most happy. Kudos to them. That is a blessing. What kind of airport doesn't have coffee when you're flying out in unGodly hours.

Yet Bob got a new county vehicle & he lives less than 2 miles from the airport. Man, talk about government waste..he is...I mean that is. With the appearance of the inside as well as the outside of the airport, it's no wonder another airline doesn't want to come to this area. This area is ripe for another airline. It's a fast growing market & going to Philadelphia/Charlotte doesn't cut it. How seriously is this area/airport being marketed to other airlines & I'm not talking about the phantom airline with flights in late 2011 as I've read in your other posts? Something needs to be done out there & there needs to be management that actually cares about the airport and MOSTLY about the passengers & customer service. It is a disgrace!!!!!

By the way...the ceiling still hasn't been replace & today is July 19, 2010!!!!!

Tancredo Cheered For Political Encore

The plagiarism scandal surrounding GOP gubernatorial hopeful Scott McInnis has pushed another familiar Colorado Republican back into the political spotlight.

Former Rep. Tom Tancredo was the overwhelming choice of Colorado Republicans if Mr. McInnis withdraws from the race, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted after the plagiarism allegations broke last week.

The survey of 429 Colorado Republicans found that 29 percent see Mr. Tancredo as "the strongest Republican candidate for governor," followed by Mr. McInnis with 19 percent. "Not sure" came in third, while the race's other Republican candidate, businessman Dan Maes, came in fourth with 13 percent.

The results surprised Mr. Tancredo.

"I was flabbergasted," said Mr. Tancredo in an interview Sunday with The Washington Times. "I was amazed."

Mr. Tancredo, best known nationally for his opposition to illegal immigration and his bid for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, said a number of things would have to happen before his name appears on a ballot. First of all, Mr. McInnis would need to withdraw.

Mr. McInnis said in an e-mail to supporters that he's "in it to win it."

Even Republicans who think Mr. McInnis has no shot aren't pushing him out the door just yet. Party insiders acknowledge that the best-case scenario would be for Mr. McInnis to stay in the race, win the Aug. 10 primary and then immediately drop out.

If Mr. McInnis withdraws before Aug. 10, then Mr. Maes, a little-known newcomer who's already raised controversy over his campaign spending, would become the candidate by default. Much better for the GOP would be for Mr. McInnis to bow out after winning the primary, which then would allow the state party's vacancy committee to choose a replacement.

Mr. McInnis made no public appearances over the weekend, but he did tell supporters at a private fundraiser in Silt, Colo., that he wouldn't step aside after the primary.

Democrats Still Reading From The Same Failed Script

Republican Study Committee Chairman Tom Price (R-GA) issued the following statement after President Obama tried to blame Republicans for Congressional Democrats’ refusal to pay for new spending to extend unemployment insurance:

“If Democrats agreed to pay for this extension, it would have passed weeks ago,” said Chairman Price. “Instead, they chose to play politics and ignore an obvious bipartisan solution. Rather than work toward solutions that pay for what Washington spends, President Obama and Congressional Democrats want to continue deficit spending while imposing job-killing tax hikes on the small businesses we rely on to create new jobs. This is the same script they have been reading from for the last year and a half, and clearly it does not end in recovery.

“The Democrats’ deficit-fueled spending spree has completely failed to kick start the economy. But instead of changing course, the President reacts by attacking Republicans who want Washington to act in a fiscally responsible manner. Political games will not create jobs for the millions of unemployed Americans. Recovery will come when Washington stops punishing America’s job creators with massive tax increases and reckless deficit spending.”

Chairman Scott On VP Biden’s Visit To Maryland

ANNAPOLIS – While Vice President Joe Biden stumps for Governor Martin O’Malley this evening, Maryland Republican Party Chairman Audrey Scott issued the following statement and questions for Martin O’Malley:

“It is rather fitting that Vice President Joe Biden, the Administration’s chiefspokesman for the failed Stimulus Bill, would come to Maryland to stump for another politician with a failed economic agenda. The Obama Administration and Governor O’Malley have been touting for months that the Stimulus Bill would produce jobs in Maryland that have never materialized. While the Vice President and O’Malley rub shoulders with donors and try to put a positive spin on their failure to produce jobs, Marylanders deserve answers on why their rhetoric does not match reality.”

Questions for Governor O’Malley

1.) Considering Maryland has lost jobs since the Stimulus was passed, would you classify your statement from February 2009 when you said that the Stimulus would create 66,000 jobs in Maryland as a ‘tactical’ error?

Gov, Martin O’Malley “Hailed” The Stimulus And Said It Would Create 66,000 Jobs In Maryland. “Gov. Martin O'Malley hailed yesterday the $3.3 billion in federal aid and other benefits Maryland could receive under a stimulus package that congressional leaders hope to pass within days. An estimated 66,000 jobs would be saved or created if the bill is enacted, and 242,0000 workers would get $100 more a month in unemployment benefits, O'Malley said. More than 2.2 million Maryland residents would get a tax cut of up to $800 or become eligible for a tax credit to make college more affordable, he said.” (Laura Smitherman, “O’Malley Hails Stimulus,” The Baltimore Sun, 2/13/09)

But The Stimulus Hasn't Helped Maryland Create Much Needed Jobs:

Maryland Has Lost 16,600 Jobs And The Unemployment Rate Has Increased From 6.4 Percent To 7.2 Percent. (Bureau Of Labor Statistics, BLS.gov, Accessed 7/16/10)

2.) Do you think wasting $500 per stimulus sign at a time when record numbers of Marylanders remain unemployed was a good investment of hard earned taxpayer dollars?

Stimulus Funds Paid For $500 Signs In Maryland To Advertise The Stimulus. ABC News' Jonathan Karl: "These signs are much pricier, 500 bucks a piece in Maryland and New Hampshire, $1,700 in Georgia, $2,000 per sign Pennsylvania and New York, and $3,000 per project in New Jersey." (ABC News' "Good Morning America," 7/10/09)

3.) According to Recovery.gov Maryland has been awarded $4,335,002,513 and has reported 13,821 ‘new jobs’ for a total $313,653.32 per job ‘saved or created.’ How do you justify such a high cost per job to the 52% of Marylanders who think the Stimulus hasn’t worked or to the 200,000 unemployed Marylanders?

· Maryland has been award $4,335,002513 in stimulus cash but has only ‘created or saved’ 13,821 jobs. (Recovery.gov Stimulus Reporting Site, Recovery.gov, Accessed 7/19/10)
· 28% in Maryland say the stimulus hurt the economy, and another 24% say it had no impact. (Rasmussen Poll 7/8/10, 500 Likely Voters, MOE +/- 4.5%)

4.) You used one time stimulus funds and multiple fund raids to give the appearance of a balanced budget. Do you care to revise statements made at the National Governors Association annual meeting where you denied dipping into other accounts or using one time budget gimmicks?

Dear Abby,

I have a man I can't trust. He cheats so much, I'm not even sure the baby I'm carrying is his..

Dear Abby,

I am a twenty-three year old liberated woman who has been on the pill for two years. It's getting expensive and I think my boyfriend should share half the cost, but I don't know him well enough to discuss money with him.

Dear Abby,

I've suspected that my husband has been fooling around, and when confronted with the evidence, he denied everything and said it would never happen again.

Dear Abby,

Our son writes that he is taking Judo. Why would a boy who was raised in a good Christian home turn against his own?

Dear Abby,

I joined the Navy to see the world. I've seen it. Now how do I get out?

Dear Abby,

My forty year old son has been paying a psychiatrist $50.00 an hour every week for two and a half years. He must be crazy.

Dear Abby,

I was married to Bill for three months and I didn't know he drank until one night he came home sober.

Dear Abby,

My mother is mean and short tempered I think she is going through mental pause.

Dear Abby,

You told some woman whose husband had lost all interest in sex to send him to a doctor. Well, my husband lost all interest in sex and he is a doctor. Now what do I do?

Remember... these people can vote

The Tiny Cabin

A social worker from a big City in Massachusetts recently transferred to the Mountains of North Carolina and Georgia and was on the first tour of her new territory when she came upon the tiniest cabin she had ever seen in her life.

Intrigued, she went up and knocked on the door.. "Anybody home?" she asked. "Yep," came a kid's voice through the door.

"Is your father there?" asked the social worker.

"Pa? Nope, he left afore Ma came in," said the kid.

"Well, is your mother there?" persisted the social worker.

"Ma? Nope, she left just afore I got here," said the kid.

"But," protested the social worker, "are you never together as a family?"

"Sure, but not here," said the kid through the door. "This is the outhouse!"

Government workers are so very smart.

Aren't you overjoyed that they'll soon be handling all our financial, educational and medical dilemmas?

Homeowners Association Sues Maryland County Executive

A homeowners association in his own jurisdiction is suing Prince Georges County Executive Jack Johnson, claiming he hasnt paid his dues.

Court documents show the Kettering association is seeking about $1,500 in unpaid fees for a home on Bennington Road.

Johnson owns that property, and rents it out, according to the Washington Post. He called the suit unfounded and claimed hes always paid his dues.

The county executive said rather than pay, he is standing up for his principles.

My thing is, look, Im not just going to give my money away because youre the county executive, people feel like youre going to pay just to avoid being embarrassed, Johnson told the Post.

Johnson also pointed out that he is paying his lawyer more than the value of the claim. His case will be in court next month.

Jack Johnson is in the last year of his role as county executive and cannot run for re-election because of term limits.

Woman Burned At Baltimore Nail Salon Gets $1M

BALTIMORE - A Pennsylvania woman badly burned at a Baltimore nail salon will receive $1 million in a settlement with the salon's insurer.

Niquita Andrews went to Nail Studio to get her acrylic fingernails removed last year and was allegedly burned when acetone was poured into a hot cup intended to heat wax. She sued for $5 million alleging the shop's negligence caused her to suffer second-degree burns on 40 percent of her body.

Andrews' attorney, Steven Freeman, called the $1 million settlement reached last week with State Farm Insurance Co. appropriate in light of Maryland's statutory cap of $710,000 on non-economic damages and Andrews' economic damages of about $300,000. Freeman says the economic damages include about $150,000 in medical expenses and lost income.

Utah’s Bob Bennett Is Barometer For Mike Castle

What do Utah’s Sen. Bob Bennett (R-UT) and Delaware’s Mike Castle have in common?

They were the elected in the class of 1992, and WILL both lose in the rising conservative movement sweeping the nation. Well actually, we are halfway there. Bob Bennett has lost his re-election bid at the Utah GOP convention. One down, one to go.

And Mike Castle is way more liberal than Bob Bennett. This does NOT bode well for Mr. Castle. Mike Castle’s lifetime voting record is 52% conservative compared to Bob Bennett’s 83%. Surely, the Delaware GOP can oust a liberal.
