Millions of part-timers are desperate for full-time jobs

WASHINGTON — The job market is even worse than the 9.1 percent unemployment rate suggests.

America's 14 million unemployed aren't competing just with each other. They must also contend with 8.8 million other people not counted as unemployed — part-timers who want full-time work.

When consumer demand picks up, companies will likely boost the hours of their part-timers before they add jobs, economists say. It means they have room to expand without hiring.

Lewes-The Delaware State Police are issuing a Gold Alert for a missing senior citizen, William R. Savage-65, of Lewes, DE.

Troopers are looking for William R. Savage-65 who was last seen by family on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 10:00 p.m. at a residence in the 32000 block of Jimtown Road, Lewes, DE.

Troopers have been unable to make contact with Savage to check on his welfare.  Attempts to locate Savage have been unsuccessful and there is concern for his safety and welfare.

WICOMICO COUNTY: DID H. I. SAVE J. F.’s JOB?

It’s a Labor Day question. Will the recent storm result in preserving the “public information officer” position on the County Executive’s staff?

It should, according to Rick Pollitt, who in a recent radio interview called Jim Fineran’s effort during Hurricane Irene “vital” to the public interest, adding that during the turmoil he had “earned his stripes” – apparently by such actions as giving interviews to the TV stations in the Baltimore-DC area to keep us informed that we were having heavy rain, some flooding and power loss and rather high winds.

Mr. Pollitt did not discuss whether Mr. Fineran’s services required any special skills beyond those of a secretary or clerk. But Mr. Pollitt did take the opportunity to express his anger about those who believe that the PIO position is unnecessary and should be reduced or eliminated as a budget expense, calling their position “shameful.”

Maryland Trooper Strikes, Kills Delaware Woman

STEVENSVILLE, Md. (AP) - A Maryland state trooper driving to a crime scene has struck and killed a Delaware woman who apparently stepped into the path of the patrol car in Queen Anne's County.

Maryland State Police says 29-year-old Iraina Curtis of Dover, Del., was killed in the crash. It happened just before 9 p.m. Friday on an access ramp off Route 50 in Stevensville.

Wicomico County Humane Society

Hi Joe.

It was brought to my attention this week that during hurricane Irene the humane society was closed. Funny thing Salibury City AC worked the entire weekend to help displaced animals. But they had no where to take animals. The Humane Society has again take Salisbury AC keys. The only place they could of taken pets in the storm to were Outside kennels at the humane society. I think this is horrible. Salisbury pays them to take their a animals but how fair is to save an animal from a storm and then just leave them out in the storm else where.This seems like animal cruelty to me. Even in night time emergencies they are looked out of the shelter. Keys were taken because to much bad info that they keep secret were getting out. Looks like just no one in this county cares. Seems the issues of a few weeks ago have just been swept under the rug as is usual. Will anyone ever stand up to these people. Doesn't seem like it. Someone needs to open another facility may be a little competition will get them doing the right thing. On another subject didnt I read in the paper that Linda Lugo had stepped down from the director spot. Funny to me she is still in charge there and WBOC still announces her as executive director and this summer this is how Linda addresses herself at local schools when she speaks there. Was this a ploy just to make the public think she was gone. They also have made no effort to find a new director. It has been almost a year now but she is still there giving orders.

Dog Found

Today at the grocery store a man left a male brown and tan Chiuaua in the parking lot. I didn't see it but another lady said she saw the man get into the car and the dog jumped out and then the man left. She was elderly and couldn't give me a good description of the man or the car. She also wasn't sure if it was intentional or he just didn't realize the dog had gotten out. I waited in the parking lot with the dog for 30 minutes but he never came back, so I left my name and number with the manager in case he came back looking. So far nobody has called. He is a really sweet dog and I don't mind giving him a home but if it wasn't intentional I would like for him to be back with his family. I am attaching a picture, would you mind posting this? Obama Administration Decision On Smog Standards Puts Thousands Of Lives At Risk

BALTIMORE – Today, the Obama administration announced that it will not update critical air quality standards for ozone pollution—commonly known as smog. This decision was made despite a unanimous recommendation by the independent board of air experts and scientists created under the Clean Air Act that the current standard be strengthened to protect public health.

Exposure to smog triggers asthma attacks, causes permanent lung damage, and can even lead to premature death. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 5,000 asthma-related deaths occur each year in the United States. In Maryland 345,344 adults and 140,794 children suffer from asthma according to the American Lung Association.

“For too long, smog pollution has left our children gasping for breath,” said Ewa Krason, Field Organizer with Environment Maryland. “Unfortunately, rather than acting decisively to protect our kids from this dangerous air pollution, the White House today chose to kick the can down the road. Our kids, senior citizens and those suffering from respiratory problems will suffer as a consequence and certainly deserve better.”

In order to protect public health and our environment, Environment Maryland continues its call to clean up the largest sources of smog-forming pollution, reduce overall energy use, and transition to clean, renewable energy sources like wind and solar power.

Bernanke's In BIG TROUBLE And So Are The Markets

Bernanke will be in MAJOR political trouble and very likely LEGAL trouble in short order.

I warned earlier that this would be the case as soon as Lloyd Blankfein hired a defense attorney. Do you really think a Wall Street CEO is going to go to jail when he can roll back everything onto the Fed (just as Ken Lewis did)? All Blankfein or any other future Wall Street CEO recipient of a major lawsuit (and there will be much more) has to argue is that the Fed forced them to make an illegal move to save the financial system and the attention turns to the Fed, specifically Bernanke.

We’ve already had a taste of this when Ken Lewis, formerly of Bank of America tried to pin the Merrill/ Countrywide mergers on Bernanke. The ONLY reason Bernake got out of that one was because politically he was still considered the savior of the Financial System. Kicking Bernanke down would have imploded the markets as, at that time, he was the figurehead for the “Fed will backstop the entire financial system” mantra.

That has now changed and Bernanke is now political plutonium. No one, not even Obama, will be backing him up. The big issue for the 2012 election will be the Fed and the economy. And both the politicians and Wall Street will be hanging the albatross of failure and corruption on Bernanke.

You can already see the Fed starting to prepare for this. Note that the Fed is now suing its favorite firm, Goldman Sachs. This move is not without context. Bernanke and pals are aware of the political tide turning in the US. They’re also aware of what’s happening in Greece and Europe. And they’re going to try to pin the blame on Goldman and others.

So what can we deduce from this?

Ongoing Iraqi Violence Almost Makes American Invasion Seem Pointless

WASHINGTON—Following the latest surge of violence in Iraq, a Pew Research Center poll released Monday has found that a substantial majority of Americans now believe the continuing bloodshed in the country almost makes it seem as if the 2003 U.S. invasion might have actually been somewhat pointless.

A scene that nearly makes the invasion of Iraq appear foolish.

Approximately 83 percent of Americans surveyed said recent incidents such as a car bomb explosion that killed 40 in the city of Kut, the executions of seven worshippers outside a mosque in Youssifiyah, and a series of other attacks that have left scores of Iraqis dead and wounded were the kinds of events that, if they didn’t know better, might make them think the lengthy occupation really wasn’t worth it in the slightest.

Forty-three percent of Americans said if someone wanted to, they could very nearly make the assessment, based on current conditions on the ground, that perhaps the United States wasted valuable resources on an unwinnable, nearly impossible endeavor.

“If I didn’t have the full story of how and why we got into Iraq, I could see how the continuing violence might, possibly, make the whole war seem almost misguided or something,” Atlanta resident Arnold Grover said. “You read about terrorists dressed as police officers gunning down men at a recruiting station and catch yourself wondering for a moment if maybe, just maybe, we might have actually made a terrible decision that just made a bad situation worse and squandered the international goodwill we enjoyed after 9/11.”

U.S. said ready to sue big banks over mortgages

FHFA to seek billions in compensation: report

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — A federal U.S. agency is ready to sue more than a dozen major banks, arguing that they misrepresented the quality of mortgage securities they put together and sold in the run-up to the bursting of the housing bubble, according to a published report.

The New York Times reported Friday that the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees mortgage firms Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, is expected to file the lawsuits in federal court Friday or Tuesday. The agency is expected to seek billions in compensation.

The suits are aimed at Bank of America Corp. /quotes/zigman/190927/quotes/nls/bac BAC -7.33%  , Goldman Sachs Group Inc. /quotes/zigman/188479/quotes/nls/gs GS -2.73%  , J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. /quotes/zigman/272085/quotes/nls/jpm JPM -3.17%  , Deutsche Bank AG /quotes/zigman/207036 DE:DBK -4.17%   /quotes/zigman/207002/quotes/nls/db DB -3.47%  and others, the report said, citing three unidentified individuals briefed on the matter.

 

Separately, Bank of America was asked by the Federal Reserve to show what measures it could take if conditions were to worsen for the bank, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. The bank responded by saying it could issue tracking shares in Merrill Lynch, the brokerage giant it acquired during the height of the financial crisis.

Meanwhile, the FHFA will argue that the banks failed to meet their due-diligence duties under securities law and failed to spot evidence that borrowers’ incomes were overstated or falsified, the report said. The securities backed by the mortgages quickly lost value when many borrowers proved unable to meet payments.

The lawsuits aim to secure reimbursement for losses on securities held by Fannie and Freddie. Private investors have attempted to force banks to buy back mortgage-backed bonds.

The Ostrich

A man walks into a restaurant with a full-grown ostrich behind him.

The waitress asks them for their orders. The man says , "A hamburger , fries and a coke , " and turns to the ostrich , "What's yours?" "I'll have the same , " says the ostrich.

 

A short time later the waitress returns with the order. "That will  be $9.40 please."  The man reaches into his pocket and pulls out the exact change for payment.

The next day , the man and the ostrich come again and the man says , "A hamburger , fries and a coke."

 

 

The ostrich says , "I'll have the same."

 

Again the man reaches into his pocket and pays with exact change.

 

This becomes routine until the two enter again. "The usual?" asks the waitress.

"No , this is Friday night , so I will have a steak , baked potato and a salad , " says the man.

 

"Same , " says the ostrich.

Shortly the waitress brings the order and says , "That will be $32.62."

 

Once again the man pulls the exact change out of his pocket and places it on the table.

 

The waitress cannot hold back her curiosity any longer. "Excuse me , sir. How do you manage to always come up with the exact change in your pocket every time?"

 

"Well , " says  the man , "several years ago I was cleaning the attic and found an old lamp. When I rubbed it , a Genie appeared and offered me two wishes. My first wish was that if I ever had to pay for anything , I would just put my hand in my pocket and the right amount of money would always be there."

 

"That's  brilliant!" says the waitress. "Most people would ask for a

million dollars or something , but you'll always be as rich as you want for as long as you live!"

 

"That's right..Whether it's a gallon of milk or a Rolls Royce , the exact money is always there , " says the man.

 

The waitress asks , "What's with the ostrich?"

 

The man sighs , pauses and answers , "My second wish was for a tall chick with a big ass and long legs who agrees with everything I say.."
