Former Crack Smoking DC Mayor to Have Statue Erected on Pennsylvania Avenue
Former Washington, D.C. mayor and city council member Marion Barry will have a statue erected in his memory on Pennsylvania Avenue.
Barry, a Democrat, served four terms as mayor of DC from 1979 to 1991 and again from 1995 to 1999. He served several terms as a member of the D.C. City Council and did so until his death in 2014.
Barry rose to national attention after the FBI filmed him in 1990 smoking crack cocaine with a former girlfriend, as part of a sting operation. His defense after being arrested was, "Bitch set me up."
After his release from prison in 1992, he ran again in 1994 and won in what was considered an impressive political comeback, the Associated Press reports.

A jab at Trump? If you don’t release your tax returns, you could be left off the presidential ballot in Md.
Presidential candidates — including President Trump if he runs for reelection — would have to publicly release their federal income tax returns to be on the ballot in Maryland, under a bill that received an initial nod from the state Senate on Thursday.
The preliminary approval followed a long debate that largely centered around the 45th president.
“For 40 years in the United States, every presidential candidate has done this until 15 months ago,” bill sponsor Sen. Paul G. Pinsky (D-Prince George’s) said of releasing tax returns. “People have come to expect this kind of information. Voters want to know before a name appears on the ballot.”
Opponents of the bill described it as a partisan shot aimed at Trump, who hasrefused to release his returns.

Kimmel: We Make Movies About Gay Minors ‘to Upset Mike Pence,’ Not to Make Money
Hollywood makes anti-Christian movies to upset people like Vice President Mike Pence, not to make money, Jimmy Kimmel revealed as host of the 2018 Academy Awards Sunday.
Kimmel made the declaration while praising a nominated movie about a 17 year-old gay boy who has an sexual relationship with a 24 year-old man in the movie, “Call Me By Your Name” starring Timothee Chalamet

Put up or shut up.
For the last month, Sen. Elizabeth Warren has tried to put the flap over her disputed claims of Cherokee ancestry behind her by embracing tribal causes, but apparently it’s not working.
Calls are rising in Massachusetts for her to take a DNA test in order to resolve once and for all, whether she’s really a Native American as questions surrounding her lineage continue to dog her Senate reelection campaign.
The Berkshire Eagle, a Massachusetts newspaper that endorsed her in 2012, called Tuesday on Ms. Warren to “screw up her courage and take the spit test,” saying that a positive test “would permanently resolve the issue—while possibly shutting down President Trump.”
Even if the test shows no Cherokee ancestry, “it would be an opportunity for the senator to perform an act rarely seen among politicians: an admission of her error and a full-throated apology to Native American tribes and anyone else offended by her spurious claim,” said the editorial.

Healthy eating does not offset high-salt diets
Healthy eating does not offset a high-salt diet, new research suggests.
Overseasoning food raises people's blood pressure regardless of how many fruit and vegetables they eat, a study found today.
Consuming more than the average British person's daily salt intake of 8.5 grams causes the heart to work significantly harder to pump blood around the body, putting people at risk of life-threatening strokes, the research adds.
Lead author Dr Queenie Chan from Imperial College London, said: 'We currently have a global epidemic of high salt intake and high blood pressure. This research shows there are no cheats when it comes to reducing blood pressure.
'Having a low-salt diet is key - even if your diet is otherwise healthy and balanced.'
The NHS and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention both recommend adults eat no more than around one-and-a-quarter teaspoons of salt, or six grams, a day, which is easily exceeded if people eat ready-prepared food.
High blood pressure affects more than one in four adults in the UK.
