Hogan Administration Announces $49 Million of Grant Funding to Higher Education Institutions

Hogan Administration Announces $49 Million of Grant Funding to Higher Education Institutions
Funding Will Support Necessary Repairs, Additions, Upgrades

ANNAPOLIS, MD—The Hogan administration today announced Board of Public Works approval of four capital grants agreements, totaling over $49 million, dedicated to fostering essential projects at four of Maryland’s higher educational institutions.

“Each dollar we provide to Maryland’s higher education institutions is an investment in our economy and our future,” said Governor Hogan. “These grants will help expand access to education, strengthen our workforce, and provide additional opportunities to our students and businesses.”

The grants, which are administered through the Maryland Department of General Services’ Capital Grants Division, were awarded to Anne Arundel Community College, Allegany College of Maryland, the Community College of Baltimore County, and Montgomery College.

“Our department takes great pride in promoting and supporting Maryland’s higher education institutions,” said General Services Secretary Ellington E. Churchill Jr. “These grants will support necessary repairs, additions, and upgrades at the respective college campuses.”

Anne Arundel Community College’s over $22 million grant will facilitate the construction of a new Health and Life Sciences Building on its main campus. Upon completion, the envisioned building aims to double the amount of space available for the science and biology programs.

Allegany College of Maryland’s $1.1 million grant will support the renovation of its technology building. The building’s infrastructure and various systems (including HVAC, IT, electrical, and fire suppression) will be replaced, along with exterior features including the roof and windows.

Through its $17 million grant, the Community College of Baltimore County plans to renovate and expand its Carol D. Eustis Center for Health Professions at CCBC Essex, which houses the School of Health Professions, the School of Applied and Informed Technology, and the Continuing Education and Economic Development-Allied Health program. This project will provide new labs, lecture rooms, faculty offices, and other spaces that will be used by the various existing and new programs.

The Montgomery College grant totaling over $8.2M will help with the demolition of Falcon Hall and the Science South Building. The demolition will provide an adequate footprint for construction of a New Math and Science Center building to house and support its STEM programs.

Caren Z. Turner, a Democratic lobbyist, has been flogged for days on social media for berating police officers in New Jersey in a video that went viral. On Thursday, her former peers on the board of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officially censured Ms. Turner, calling her conduct “outrageous” and “profoundly disturbing.”

The censure was a swift and harsh rebuke of Ms. Turner, who interceded in a March 31 traffic stop in Tenafly, N.J. Video released by the police captured Ms. Turner, 60, flashing her Port Authority badge and swearing at officers who had stopped and impounded a car her daughter was riding in.

Parts of Lower Eastern Shore to be under tropical storm watch

BALTIMORE —A Tropical Storm Watch related to Hurricane Dorian has been issued for Friday for Maryland's lower Eastern Shore and parts of the Maryland and Delaware beaches.

The watch, which includes Ocean City, means tropical storm conditions are possible late Thursday into Friday.

Dorian -- still a powerful Category 2 hurricane with 110 mph winds -- was moving up the Georgia coastline Wednesday night. With a storm front approaching Maryland from the north and west is one of several weather systems that will push Dorian away from the Mid-Atlantic coast.

Dorian will be closer to the coast of the Carolinas than it was to the Florida coast, so conditions in the Carolinas will be worse and damage will be likely.

Vegan sues neighbors over smell of barbecued meat in their backyards

(KUTV) — A vegan woman's beef with her neighbors -- over barbecuing meat in their backyard -- was so serious that she sued them... taking the case all the way to Australia's Supreme Court, according to Nine News Australia.

The woman, Cilla Carden of Perth also demanded her neighbors stop smoking and bouncing balls in their backyard, but Carden's biggest issue is the smell of meat cooking. Fish specifically.

Carden told 9News:

They've put it there so I smell fish, all I can smell is fish. I can't enjoy my backyard, I can't go out there. It's been devastating, it's been turmoil, it's been unrest, I haven't been able to sleep.

How 50 Years of No-Fault Divorce Gave Us a Throwaway Culture

Fifty years ago this week, Ronald Reagan made what he later admitted was one of the worst mistakes of his political life: As governor of California, he signed a bill bringing no-fault divorce to his state.

California was the first state to take the plunge, but by no means the last. Reagan’s signature unleashed what became a national divorce revolution.

Within five years, 44 states would follow suit and pass some form of no-fault divorce.

State Announces Partnership with Maryland Casinos to Promote Small Business Opportunities

ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Governor’s Office of Small, Minority & Women Business Affairs today announced multiple small business outreach events in partnership with three Maryland casinos. Beginning on September 11 and continuing through the month, small business owners and certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) firms will have the opportunity to learn how to do business with Rocky Gap Casino and Resort in Cumberland, Hollywood Casino in Perryville, and Ocean Downs Casino in Ocean City.

“Relationships drive business,” said Jimmy Rhee, special secretary of the Governor’s Office of Small, Minority, and Women Business Affairs. “This is a great opportunity for small and minority business owners to begin building relationships with buyers in a sector still experiencing growth here in Maryland.”

Maryland’s casinos purchase a diverse range of goods, including uniforms, furnishings, computer equipment, disposable restaurant supplies, security and AV equipment, and promotional products. Additionally, the casinos need a variety of services such as printing, linens, HVAC, landscaping, and snow removal.

“We’re eager to meet with small business owners who want to work in this industry,” said Tim Shea, vice president of operations at Hollywood Casino Perryville. “We know that firms who come out to meet with us at this event are serious about building good business relationships.”

Outreach events are open to all small business owners and will be held on three consecutive Wednesdays in September. The first will take place at Rocky Gap Casino & Resort on September 11, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Advance registration is preferred. Joe Scarborough scorches leftward lurch of 2020 Democrats

Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough offered a scathing rebuke of many of the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates for their policy proposals and said that they are giving President Trump his "only chance" to win reelection.

The panel was discussing a number of policies that some presidential candidates have publicly supported, expressing their fear that the stances the candidates are taking could end up helping the president.

"How does it get better for Donald Trump? Well, you have Democrats getting worse. You have Democrats saying, 'You know what we're going to do? We're going to decriminalize crossing the border illegally,'" Scarborough stated. "'We’re going to take away health insurance from 160 million Americans. You know what we're going to do? We’re going to give healthcare coverage to people who cross the border illegally.'"

Cruz and Chicago mayor trade blows on Twitter over gun violence

Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Democratic Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot shared a heated exchange on Twitter over gun violence, in which Lightfoot accused Cruz of being a "coward Republican" and Cruz criticized the city's criminal policies as ineffective.

The spat began when Cruz shared a story from Breitbart about the Labor Day weekend gun violence in Chicago, tweeting that disarming "law-abiding citizens" was not the answer, but rather the answer is incarcerating violent criminals before they have the opportunity to commit more crimes.

Lightfoot responded that Cruz should "keep our name out of your mouth" and blamed neighboring states with less strict gun policies as the source of gun violence in the city. According to Time , Chicago was responsible for nearly half of the increase in homicides in the United States in 2016.

Feds Are Going After Kate Steinle’s Killer After California Drops The Ball

A U.S. attorney clarified the status of the illegal alien who fatally shot Kate Steinle in San Francisco in 2015, saying he “has no right to possess a firearm under federal law, even if California extends him sanctuary.”

David Anderson, the U.S. attorney in San Francisco, issued the scathing statement in response to a California appeals court’s decision Friday to overturn a gun possession conviction against Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate, a 48-year-old Mexican national who admitted to holding the gun that killed Steinle.

Garcia-Zarate was convicted on state charges Nov. 28, 2017, on one count of felony possession of a firearm in connection with Steinle’s July 1, 2015, death. He was acquitted on first-degree murder, second-degree murder and manslaughter charges at the trial.

Lawsuit: The Chicken Industry Created a Secret Cartel to Suppress Wages

The nation’s chicken-processing companies created a covert cartel to suppress wages paid to many Americans and immigrants, according to a lawsuit by the Handley Farah & Anderson law firm in Washington D.C.

“For more than a decade, Defendants have conspired and combined to fix and depress the compensation paid to non-supervisory production and maintenance employees at chicken processing plants in violation of Section 1 of the Sherman [antitrust] Act,” says the lawsuit, which was filed August 30 in a Baltimore court.

“Defendants formed and implemented the conspiracy to reduce labor costs and maximize profits,” and should be required to pay damage to their “hundreds of thousands” of swindled employees, including many uneducated legal and illegal immigrants, the lawsuit says.

The lawsuit is aided by at least two unidentified witnesses from the industry, which includes Sanderson Farms, Koch Foods, Tysons Foods, Perdue, and some of the Georgia companies that were visited by federal law enforcement officials in early August. The 18 firms and their 200 processing plants deliver 90 percent of the chicken sold in the United States and employ 250,000 people, said the lawsuit.

'There were many, many reasons': CNN anchor asks Mattis why he didn't resign earlier

"There were many, many reasons potentially for somebody such as yourself to resign. Why not over any of these?” Amanpour asked, after playing a series of video clips.

Mattis, who decided to leave the administration after being unable to convince Trump to not pull American troops out of Syria, said, "Christiane, if you go into the military, you swear an oath to uphold the Constitution. The elected commander-in-chief is the elected commander-in-chief. But if we’re going to protect this democracy, even in its most raucous moments, even when there are fundamental issues going on, you don’t want the Defense Department coming in and saying, 'We’re not going to defend the country today.'”

Study: Poorest 20% of Americans richer than the average Canadian

A new study of worldwide wealth showed the bottom 20% of U.S. income earners were wealthier on average than people in most European countries.

The study, conducted by Just Facts, released last week found the bottom fifth of American citizens "consume more goods and services than the national averages for all people in most affluent countries," including European countries on a per capita basis. Individuals in the poorest 20% of the United States on average have more material resources than those in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Japan.

The analysis examined income, charity, and noncash welfare benefits to determine how many goods and services people consumed in each country. Henrique Schneider, the chief economist of the Swiss Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises, said the study "provides valuable insight into poverty measures."

Illinois' Financial Decay Spreads To Cities Across The State

Illinois’ finances aren’t just decaying at the top, they’re falling apart everywhere. The state’s one-size-fits-all pension laws and overly generous benefits have left many cities suffocating under impossible pension debts as their populations shrink, tax burdens jump and resident incomes stagnate.

Without an amendment to the Illinois Constitution’s pension protection clause – and subsequent pension reforms – expect many cities to head toward insolvency.

The map below shows just how wide and deep the crisis is. Of the 630 downstate police and fire pension funds that reported data to the Illinois Department of Insurance in 2017, 57 percent had funded ratios lower than 60 percent. And nearly 100 funds had funded ratios below 40 percent.

'He hurt a lot of people': Democratic senator suggests prison time for Mark Zuckerberg

Sen. Ron Wyden said Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg should be punished with prison time over the social media giant’s privacy lapses.

Because he hurt a lot of people,” the Oregon Democrat toldWillamette Week.

Wyden published a draft bill late last year that proposed a penalty of 10 to 20 years of imprisonment for executives who mishandle consumer data.

$19K Grant Helps To Expand ‘Save A Shore Farmer’ Campaign

BERLIN – A local suicide prevention campaign for farmers and farm families will expand this year with the help of additional grant funding.

Last fall, the Jesse Klump Suicide Awareness and Prevention Program partnered with the local Suicide Prevention Coalition – a consortium of nonprofits, counseling services, health departments, hospitals and school systems – to launch “Save a Shore Farmer” with the help of a $19,000 grant from the Rural Maryland Council.

Officials said Save a Shore Farmer’s first year focused on intensive media outreach to raise awareness of the heightened risk of suicide in farm families and to spread the message that suicide can be prevented. This included billboard placement, more than 1,000 television spots, placing printed information at 19 sites in the lower three counties where farmers may gather, and appearances at agricultural-related events.

Jesse Klump Memorial Fund President Kim Klump said a report from the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) noted the high suicide risk associated with farmers, forestry workers and commercial fishermen.

WALSH: Calling Gun Confiscation A ‘Mandatory Buyback’ Is Like Calling Armed Robbery A ‘Compelled Donation’

Democrats have ramped up their extremist anti-gun rhetoric in the wake of the mass shooting in Odessa, Texas over the weekend that left seven dead and dozens injured. Of course, as usual, the gun debate misses the point. The shooter on Saturday was a psychotic lunatic who previously failed a gun purchase background check, had called the FBI many times over the years to leave incoherent messages, and finally snapped after being fired from his job. It appears that this tragedy was entirely preventable, had already existing laws been followed and red flags been heeded.

Adding more laws on top of the mass of unfollowed or ineffective ones will not achieve anything. The shooter in Dayton, Ohio last month was known to keep a list of people he wanted to kill and rape. It should not have been necessary to take everyone's guns away in order to forbid that particular dangerous nutjob from obtaining a firearm. In the same way, a nationwide gun control initiative is not needed, and would not be the most effective means, to disarm a paranoid weirdo whose favorite hobby is rambling to the FBI's answering machine.

But Democrats are not interested in effective solutions. Hence former Vice President Joe Biden's call for a ban on magazines that "hold multiple bullets" — as opposed to magazines that contain just one bullet, I guess — and former Rep. Beto O'Rourke's (D-TX) proposal of a "buy back" program. Here's how the congressman explained this idea to reporters:

Omar’s Husband Wants Divorce After Bombshell ‘Homewrecker’ Allegations, Source Says

"The Minnesota congresswoman and her husband allegedly separated in March, and Omar asked Hirsi to divorce her around that time because she didn't want to file the papers — but Hirsi refused, telling her if she wanted a divorce she should do it herself, said the source, who has known both parties for 20 years," The New York Post reports. "The husband allegedly changed his mind after Tim Mynett's wife last week filed bombshell divorce papers claiming her spouse was having an affair with the Somali-born US representative — with Hirsi said to be angry he had been made to look the fool by the allegations of an extramarital affair."

Whoopi Goldberg rips into Debra Messing and Eric McCormack for demanding Trump donor 'blacklist'

"Listen, the last time people did this. People ended up killing themselves. This is not a good idea," Goldberg said as she compared the actors' insistence for a public list of Trump donors to McCarthyism. "We had something called a blacklist, and a lot of really good people were accused of stuff. Nobody cared whether it was true or not. They were accused. And they lost their right to work."

"In this country, people can vote for who they want to. That is one of the great rights of this country.
