2008 Voter-Intimidation Case Against New Black Panthers Riles The Right
The discussion centers on whether the Justice Department's civil rights division mishandled a lawsuit against members of the New Black Panther Party, which was filed weeks before the Obama administration took office. The suit was focused on the party and two of its members, who stood out front of a polling place in Philadelphia on Election Day 2008 wearing military gear. They were captured on video and were accused of trying to discourage some people from voting. One carried a nightstick.
Conservatives complained last year when Justice officials narrowed the case, dropping the party and one of the men and focusing only the bearer of the stick. Department officials have said since then that they did not have sufficient evidence to pursue the case against the other defendants. Justice officials who served in the Bush administration have countered that the department had enough evidence to pursue the case more fully and called the decision to narrow it political. The matter caught the attention of some Republican lawmakers, who held up the confirmation of President Obama's assistant attorney general for civil rights for months asking for a congressional review of the case.
Fraud Gets Ex-Obama, Clinton Fundraiser 12 years
NEW YORK – A wealthy Manhattan investment banker and former top Democratic fundraiser was sentenced Thursday to 12 years in prison for defrauding banks of $292 million, some of which he donated to politicians including Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Al Gore.
Hassan Nemazee, 60, had reached a plea deal in March, admitting that he cheated banks out of the money and pleading guilty to three counts of bank fraud and one count of wire fraud. U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein in Manhattan said he'll get out of prison in about a decade.
Nemazee was the national finance chairman of Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign; he also raised money for Obama and a long list of other prominent Democrats. He was Sen. John Kerry's New York finance chairman during his failed 2004 presidential run.
Prosecutors said he used some of the proceeds from his crimes to make personal donations to election campaigns, to make charitable donations and to live a lavish lifestyle that included apartments in Italy and Manhattan, partial interest in a private plane and a luxury yacht.
Stein said he showed leniency to Nemazee in part because of "his involvement in American political life." If the judge had followed federal sentencing guidelines, Nemazee would have received at least another three years in prison and as many as 19 1/2 years.
Prosecutors said Nemazee used fake collateral starting in 1998 and continuing for more than a decade in order to obtain large loans from major banks. The judge ordered him to pay $292 million in restitution.
An indictment said he forged signatures, concocted bogus account statements and established "virtual offices" to conceal a scam. It said he used proceeds from new loans to pay off older ones — a maneuver prosecutors called a Ponzi scheme.

The Baltimore Orioles: All Star Break Blues
How bad have they been? We're talking historically bad. I'd-rather-see-Oprah-naked then-watch-them-play, bad. So bad the Baltimore Sun began running updates on the team comparing their win/loss record to the worst Oriole team of all time and some of the worst teams in history. They call the segment "The Bottom Line". As of the last update here is where the current Orioles ranked:
1916 Philadelphia Athletics: 19-68-1 (.222)
2003 Detroit Tigers: 23-65 (.261)
1962 New York Mets: 24-64 (.273)
2010 Orioles: 28-59 (.322)
1988 Orioles: 29-59 (.330)
1954 Orioles: 32-56 (.364)
Keep in mind the 1954 Orioles team were an expansion team and in 1988 the team began the year with a record of futility, 0-21, that has yet to come close to being matched. And we're behind BOTH!
Why is this happening?
Their record, I believe, is a reflection of three things.
1. Last year we traded Aubrey Huff. Huff wasn't the game's best power hitter, but he was our best power hitter. When we traded him we traded one of the only home run threats that we had. Luke Scott, it could be argued is the other, though his streaks of hot hitting followed by long streaks of cold make him hard to quantify for comparison. With his new club Aubrey Huff is sitting at 17 home runs, 54 RBIs and a .295 batting average. To fill the void at first we signed Garrett Adkins. He stunk up the joint so bad we threw him to the curb bouncer-style and asked him never to come back. Now we have a first base by committee that isn't working or producing. When you trade your power guy you had better have another one to take his place, we didn't and it shows.
2. Lack of Outfield Power. Nick Markakis and Adam Jones were supposed to build upon their success and make up for the loss of power that came from trading Huff. It hasn't happened. Adam Jones began the year swinging at everything including those nasty hookers that roam in front of the old Buddy Shell's, but striking out! Markakis actually had a good first half with a batting average of .308, but only 6 homers and 31 RBI. While Adam Jones has rallied of late to post 14 home runs and 39 RBIs at the break, it was a long time coming. And Nick's lack of punch at the plate is alarming.
3. Pitching. Our new closer, Mike Gonzalez pitched in 3 games recording 2 blown saves, 2 losses and an ERA of 18.00, before being sent to the disabled list. Our youngsters who were supposed to ascend to the majors with a shout of triumph have taken up the fetal position with the sound of whimpers. Last September Brian Matusz pitched a 1 hitter against the Yankees. This year he began the year with a lot of promise, but had some rough games and now sits at 3-9, 4.77. Brad Bergesen has been back and forth to AAA Norfolk because of his lack of quality games and is at 3-6, 6.40 ERA. Koji Uehara is so fragile he may hurt himself reading this. Chris Tillman, another "blue chip" prospect is 1-3, 5.64 ERA. Our old ace Jeremy Guthrie is 3-10, 4.77 ERA and threatening to lead the league in losses for a second straight year. The new ace we brought in to mentor the young pitchers, Kevin Millwood, is 2-8, 5.77 ERA. Oddly, Millwood had a decent ERA for much of the first half, it was 3.89 headed into his June 3rd start, but racked up losses because of a lack of run support just the same. Then June came and his game, if not his arm, totally fell apart.
Any positives?
Our "All Star" Ty Wiggington was a complete surprise. I'd argue that he did not deserve to make the all star team, but he had 14 home runs and 45 RBIs in the half and only 11/41 last year. I would be willing to bet he gets traded and he should. His value is never going to be higher and at 32 he is likely too old to help out in the long term. This is probably his career year, even though he is hitting just .252.
Jake Arrieta is 3-2 with a 4.38 ERA. While the ERA isn't much to talk about, he has held teams to one run three times in his seven starts. However, in two of those starts he gave up five, which trashed his ERA. There are games when he and Brian Matusz look like they have put it all together and are going to lead the Orioles into greener pastures, but then the next game will come and they get knocked out of the game before the fifth. Hopefully, both of them learn to be consistent.
Jason Berken is the only pitcher on the staff that has been consistent this year. He is 2-1 with a 1.95 ERA as a middle reliever. Those numbers were the only ones on the Orioles team worthy of a nod in the All Star game, because that ERA is exemplary. But middle relievers, like Rodney Dangerfield, get no respect. At 26 years old the Orioles might have found someone that can actually pitch from the bullpen, let's not trade him.
Corey Patterson was out of baseball when the Orioles called him to fill a spot created by the injury to Felix Pie and he has performed admirably at the plate hitting .289, 5 home runs, 29 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. He also had the hit of the first half with a game tying 9th inning grand slam, his first ever 4 RBI homer. Unfortunately, there are times when Patterson looks lost in left field. Though he is fleet footed, he has a hard time making the catches that he should. Since Pie has returned from the DL, we'll likely trade him.
What can we do to fix it?
Nothing. This is a bad team. Their record is historically bad and they do not have the talent to turn it around. We can hope that when they finally hire new manager he'll have some fire in his belly and can inspire/cajole/use force to make the team compete. I look forward to GM Andy MacPhail trading Wiggington and Patterson to see what kind of value we can get.
Can't Get It Out Of Your Head: Best Ad Jingles
"I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke," performed by popular British act The New Seekers, was the soundtrack for one of Coke's most famous commercials, July 1971's "Hilltop." The jingle was so popular that it was recorded as a full-length song and became a commercial hit in both the U.S. and the U.K., where later in 1971 it spent several weeks at the top of the charts.
It's A Busy Day For Salisbury News
Dee, Dee, Deeeee
Besides his rants and temper tantrums last night, Ollinger is digging his own hole and will implode soon enough.
Gail Bartgovich, Stevie Prettyman and Joe Holloway sat in the audience and quite frankly when they got around to their section Gail very professionally said, this is a STATE invitation. You'll be holding a local forum next month, we'll wait until then to speak. A class act all the way.
20+ Politicians, 7 Young Republicans
Last night the Wicomico Young Republicans held a sort of meet and greet. Unfortunately, there were very few in attendance, young republicans, that is.
IMHO, it was shameful that this group couldn't bring in more people to listen to these Candidates and their platforms.
However, there were a couple of people there that didn't know the difference between COUNTY Candidates and STATE Candidates. More on that to come.
Letter To The Editor...Held At Gunpoint
On the day in question, I was moving furniture and belongings to my new residence when I accidentally squeeled the tires on my heavily loaded pickup truck crossing Rt. 13 at Lowe's. An officer quickly "lit me up," and knowing what for, I pulled into the Toys R Us parking lot and began to search my glove compartment for my registration. In the early dark and rain, I became aware of the officer at my passenger window and looked over that way. What I saw was the officer in a crouched stance pointing his service weapon at my head.
Having never had a gun pointed at me before, I was dumbfounded, and asked the officer if he was f-----g crazy. He never moved but pointed to a couple of long guns--a deer rifle and a muzzleloader--that I was moving and had placed in full view leaning against the passenger side. I thought this was what you were supposed to do, rather than hide them. "I'm f----g moving! They're hunting guns!" I told him. He never moved the gun from straight at my head. Clearly, an experienced officer--he is a 10 yr veteran I was told--would have sensed no threat. All he had to do was to ask me to step out of the vehicle and I would gladly have done so.
When he continued to point at my head while the rain came down, I admit that I said some very bad things to him in response to his actions. This was not smart, of course, but was my gut reaction to someone trying to kill me for squeeling my tires. Backup finally arrived after what seemed five or so minutes, calmly walked me to the back of my truck without drama and without cuffing me while I told them what had happened. I have been told by one of those officers, and by the lieutenant who interviewed me the next day at HQ, that what this guy did is "standard procedure." So, that being the case, am I to believe that the hundreds of hunters who flood the roads during deer season--their guns fully in view like mine was--will be held at gunpoint--to their heads--while it is straightened out? I think not.
The Salisbury police have refused to release the names of the three officers who shot and killed a knife-wielding mental patient in the 700 block of South Park Drive last year. Was this officer one of them? Who knows? This is the reason why such information must be reported, and is in any sophisticated metropolis. Do we have a trigger happy officer out there? Again, who knows.
I may have passed on writing this if I got a simple apology. The officer who charged me did not show up for trial and the case of the spinning tires was dismissed. More cynical readers might suspect this was ordered to prevent any information about his actions from surfacing. All I know is if you get stopped by the police in Salisbury, Md., your life insurance had better be up to date.

Missing Girl Found After Almost 7 Years
The girl had just turned a year old when she was abducted in September 2003.
She had been in the care of foster parents in Norwalk, California, when she was snatched by three of her aunts, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County sheriff's Norwalk Station said.
Two of the aunts were caught at the time. The third got away with the child, said sheriff's spokesman Bill Evans.
The girl then somehow ended up with a family in Phoenix that had no relation to her biological family, authorities said.

Gov. Pawlenty: 'Credible Evidence' Of Fraud In 2008 Coleman-Franken Race
Pawlenty seemed to back allegations leveled by a conservative group in Minnesota that a sizable number of convicted felons, who were ineligible to vote, cast ballots in the extremely close Senate election, possibly tipping the race to Franken, who was sworn in last year as senator.
“There’s a serious allegation to that effect and if it turns out to be true, it’s quite possible,” Pawlenty said during an appearance on Fox News when asked if felons might have handed Franken victory.
“There’s a group out here in Minnesota that’s investigated that,” added the two-term governor and potential 2012 presidential candidate. “They seem to have found credible evidence that many felons who are not supposed to be voting actually voted in the Franken-Coleman election.”
The contest between Franken and Coleman, the incumbent senator, dragged on for months during hand recounts and in court contests and litigation before Franken was certified as winner by 312 votes.

Senate Republicans Demand Answers From Kagan On Obamacare
All seven Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee sent a letter today to Solicitor General Elena Kagan demanding information about whether she at any time as a member of the Obama administration discussed the suit filed by Florida and numerous other states challenging the constitutionality of the health-care law signed by President Barack Obama--an action that under federal law could require Kagan to recuse herself from the case if she is confirmed as a justice and it comes before the Supreme Court.
In the letter, the Judiciary Committee Republicans pose 13 questions to Kagan. The first seven directly probe whether she was in anyway involved in the administration’s planning or response to the lawsuit brought against Obamacare by Florida and other states. Questions eight and nine probe whether she discussed the underlying constitutional issues involved in the health care legislation. Question ten asks her why she should not recuse herself from ruling on Supreme Court challenges to the health-care law if she discussed it or the underlying constitutional issues during her service in the Obama administration.

Mills For Delegate Fundraiser
One of the tenets of my campaign and something that I believe is vital to the Eastern Shore and to Maryland, is small business. Small business employs a significant amount of people on the Eastern Shore and without those jobs; we would be worse off economically than we already are. Furthermore, the attitude of the entrepreneur is what made America great and we need to continue to support them with lower taxes and reducing the ridiculous amount of overregulation that they must deal with. Government should be getting out of the way, not hindering the progress of businesses.
It is with that in mind, that I announce with great pride that my first fundraiser will be held at a small business within my district. On Saturday, July 24th, from 5-7 pm, I will be holding a spaghetti dinner at the Deli at Pecan Square, located at 1210 Nanticoke Road. Having been a patron of this restaurant for awhile, I know that the food is top quality and the service excellent. I am humbled that they would think enough of me to host a fundraiser in my name. Ticket prices are $25 per person, or $45 for a couple. Also, children under 7 are free and children between the ages of 7-14 are only $15. There will be several prominent elected officials present and I will be helping serve, so it will be a truly interactive event.
If you would like tickets or have any questions, please feel free to contact me at electdustinmills2010@gmail.com. I welcome all who attend and look forward to seeing everyone there!
Respectfully,
Dustin Mills

Approximately 300 people packed a Helena Public Schools board of trustees meeting Tuesday night to voice their opinions on the district's proposed changes to it's health curriculum. Specifically, the "Human Sexuality" portion of the draft that calls for children as young as five-years-old to begin sex-ed.

Bob Ehrlich To Visit The Troubled Dover Bridge
Just weeks after 900 commuters were stranded on a stalled MARC train near Baltimore, residents in Talbot and Caroline counties were stranded on either side of the Choptank River as state route 331 was shut down for hours when the Bridge malfunctioned and refused to close. Direct access to the area’s major hospital as well as jobs and businesses was cut off as a result.
On Thursday July 15th Bob Ehrlich will visit the Dover Bridge to discuss its condition with residents and pledge his commitment to seeing it fixed as governor. The structure has been declared structurally obsolete for years and is a public safety hazard even when operating; its lanes are too narrow to meet current highway standards; its supports are crumbling.
Bob Ehrlich believes the citizens of the Mid Shore deserve a safe and fully functional bridge—not one plagued with constant problems that cause worry and stress to people who depend on it. He also believes residents deserve a prompt response from the O’Malley Administration about why it has not been fixed. Ehrlich will meet with area residents and discuss the urgent need for action from leaders in Annapolis.

OFFENSE AND PITCHING LEAD SHOREBIRDS TO 8-1 WIN
Salisbury, Md. – The Delmarva Shorebirds hit three homers in a game for the second time this year as they cruised past West Virginia, 8-1, at Perdue Stadium on Wednesday night. The Shorebirds notched more than 10 hits for the first time since June 30th. The 13 hits were the most since June 2nd, when they recorded 13 against Greensboro.
West Virginia scored their lone run of the night in the first inning. Jarek Cunningham hit a one out double. Two batters later, Rogelio Norris hit a flare single into right-center field to plate Cunningham.
The Shorebirds were quick to respond in the bottom of the first. Brian Conley blasted a 3-2 pitch over the right-center field wall to tie the game at 1-1. It was his third homer of the season.
In the second, the Shorebirds grabbed the lead. Levi Carolus led off with a towering homer to left field. It was also his third homer of the season.
The ‘Birds were back to work in the third inning. Ty Kelly hit a lead off single to left field. The next batter, Tyler Townsend, belted a double to deep left field to score Kelly from first. Townsend moved to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a single to right by Carolus to give the ‘Birds a 4-1 edge.
After going without a run in the fourth, the Shorebirds tallied three more in the fifth off Brandon Holden. Kelly led off with a line drive single to right field. Townsend followed with a triple off the base of the wall in straight away center field. Kieron Pope then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Townsend. The Shorebirds took a 7-1 lead on a homer to right-center by Steve Bumbry, his third of the year.
Kenny Moreland tossed a gem to earn his fifth win of the season. He retired 17 of the final 19 batters he faced and allowed only four hits in 6.2 innings pitched. Moreland also fanned eight batters without issuing a walk.
James Brandhorst tossed 1.1 innings and allowed only one hit. David Walters made his Shorebirds debut in the ninth inning and tossed a scoreless frame.
Brandon Holden (1-9) was tagged with the loss in 5.0 innings on the hill. He allowed nine hits and seven runs.
The Shorebirds play game two of the series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jesse Beal toes the rubber for Delmarva.
Wargotz Sees Hope In Latest Rasmussen Poll
Annapolis - Commissioner Eric Wargotz M.D. sees hope in the latest Rasmussen poll. The latest Rasmussen Report Survey of the Maryland Senate Race shows Senator Mikulski is at her weakest point in decades.
The survey found that Eric Wargotz starts the campaign with the same percentage as the Republican received against her in 2004. This signals Commissioner Wargotz has a solid base on which to build.
Some analysts may say Mikulski has a strong lead, but many analysts forget that in December 2009 prior to Scott Brown's victory in Massachusettes, Democrat Martha Coakley had a 19 point lead over Scott Brown. She was viewed as a lock for the Senate seat held by the late Senator Kennedy in a state with a 3 to 1 Democrat to Republican registration advantage. Scott Brown won because voters are tired of one-party rule in Washington.
"Voters in Maryland are tired of one-party rule in Washington." said Wargotz. "This poll shows Senator Mikulski is vulnerable if the right candidate runs a voter focused campaign."
One particular area of strength in the Rasmussen poll for Senator Mikulski was with women which is an area Dr. Wargotz can make serious gains. Dr. Wargotz has specialized in providing medical care to women throughout his career. He is a recognized expert in pathology of the Breast and Gynecological Tract. He has published over two-dozen peer-reviewed research papers in a variety of medical journals on a variety of topics. He is a member of the prestigious Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists and is a recipient of the Miller teaching award for excellence in medical student teaching He was recently honored as a recipient for the third consecutive year being rated as one of "Americas Top Physicians, 2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2007-2008 " by the Consumer's Research Council, Washington D.C. In March 2009 Dr. Wargotz received the " "Physician Patient's Choice Award" for 2008, Maryland.
