LESS AMERICANS EMPLOYED TODAY THAN IN 2001

We only need to add 20 million jobs next month to get back to our long-term trend line. I’m sure the SAVIOR will fill us in on the details next week.
Today, the Labor Department reported that nonfarm payrolls (jobs) were unchanged in August. Today’s chart provides some perspective on the US job market. Note how the number of jobs steadily increased from 1961 to 2001 (top chart). During the last economic recovery (i.e. the end of 2001 to the end of 2007), job growth was unable to get back up to its long-term trend (first time since 1961). During the current cycle, nonfarm payrolls have pulled away from its 40-year trend (from 1961-2001) by a record amount (see bottom chart). In fact, the current number of US jobs is well below its 2001 peak.

CDC: Why Are U.S. Circumcision Rates Declining?

Why are newborn circumcision rates dropping in the U.S.? In a report released Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that hospital circumcisions had declined over the past 10 years, after more than a decade of increase.

The rate of in-hospital circumcision rose from 48.3% in 1988-91 to 61.1% in 1997-2000, the CDC reports. To gauge current rates of circumcision, the researchers looked at numbers from three large, independent data sources, all of which collect discharge data on inpatient hospitalizations.

Every data set showed a decline. For example, the 1999-2010 National Hospital Discharge Survey showed that fewer than 12 million of nearly 20 million newborn boys were circumcised over the past decade. The survey showed that the rate of in-hospital circumcisions dropped from 62.5% in 1999 to 56.9% in 2008.

The administration, coordinated through FEMA, is committed to bringing all of the resources of the federal family to bear to support the states and territories that have been affected by Hurricane Irene. FEMA, through our regional offices in Boston, MA, Philadelphia, PA, New York City, NY, Atlanta, GA, and our Caribbean Area Office in Puerto Rico, have been in close contact and coordination with the states and territories that have been affected. Over the past several days, President Obama has declared major disaster declarations for the states of North Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Vermont and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and emergency declarations for North Carolina, Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont, making available federal resources to support response efforts. Prior to Irene's making landfall on the East Coast Saturday, FEMA deployed teams and resources along the East Coast from South Carolina to Maine.  In advance of Irene moving through the territories earlier last week, FEMA deployed teams to both Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to coordinate directly with local officials on the ground.  At the direction of President Obama and DHS Secretary Napolitano, FEMA continues to work with our federal, state, territorial, tribal and local partners, as well as voluntary organizations, the private sector, and others to respond to the aftermath of Irene.  The following timeline provides an overview of these and other federal activities, to date, to support these territories, states, families and communities.

Man Arrested For Allegedly Biting A Snake

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A snake bite in a north Sacramento neighborhood left the victim seriously hurt, but the injured party isn't whom you'd expect.

Police say a python underwent emergency surgery after a man allegedly bit the creature twice.

Officers were called to Del Paso Heights around 6:30 p.m. Thursday after a passer-by reported that a man was lying on the ground and may have been assaulted, according to Sgt. Andrew Pettit. When they arrived, they found David Senk, 54, still lying there — but police say he wasn't the one who was assaulted.

Another man approached officers and accused Senk of taking two bites out of his 3-foot pet python, Pettit said.

Senk was arrested on suspicion of unlawfully maiming or mutilating a reptile and booked on $10,000 bail.

In a jailhouse interview with KXTL-TV on Friday, Senk said he had no memory of the incident and that he has a drinking problem.

An old man, a boy and a donkey
were going to town.
The boy rode on the donkey and the old man walked.

Who remarked "What a shame the old man
Is walking and the boy is riding."

The man and boy thought maybe the critics were right,
so they changed positions.
Later they passed some people who
Remarked "What a shame . . . He makes that little boy walk."
So they then decided they'd both walk!

Soon they passed some more people
Who remarked "They're really stupid to walk when they
have a decent donkey to ride."

So, they both rode the donkey.
 Now they passed some people
Who shamed them by saying "How awful toPut such a load on a poor donkey."

The boy and man figured they were probably right,
So they decide to carry the donkey.

As they crossed the bridge,
They lost their grip on the animal
And he fell into the river and drowned.

The moral of the story?
If you try to please everyone,
You might as well . . .
Kiss your ass goodbye!
As they went along they passed some people

A Letter To The Editor: Bed Bugs

Joe,

I was wondering if you or your readers would be able to help me and/or offer advice.

On May 15th I started a lease for a condo in Ocean City for the entire season (cost: $8500).

About a month into the lease we discovered our unit and several other units were infested with bed bugs. I notified my realtor and they then notified that building management company and then they contacted an exterminator.
Ever since then the exterminator has made a couple visits and sprayed for the pests. They have yet to be exterminated. Just tonight while sleeping I awoke covered in swelling bed bug bites. I captured 7 of them in a jar.

What's the best plan of action to rectify this problem? Is it wrong to expect some reimbursement?

I will be contacting the real estate agency and if I don't get the answers I expect then I hope you'll assist me in exposing the property where the bed bugs exist and the real estate agency that is renting out these units knowing they are infested with bed bugs.

Many thanks,
Sick, tired, and itchy.

Tropical Storm Lee Forms Over Gulf as Louisiana, Mississippi Declare States Of Emergency

A large storm system churning in the Gulf Of Mexico grew Friday into Tropical Storm Lee, beginning a Labor Day weekend-long assault that could bring up to 20 inches of rain in some spots from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle.

The storm was expected to make landfall on the central Louisiana coast late Saturday and turn east toward New Orleans, where it would provide the biggest test of rebuilt levees since Hurricane Gustav struck on Labor Day 2008.

Down and Out in L.A.: When the Middle Class Goes Homeless

Volunteer Jessica Valencia, right, serves meals at the Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles' Skid Row on May 16, 2011

At a homeless shelter on Skid Row in Los Angeles, there's a man who once made a six-figure salary as a successful producer of Hollywood films and sitcoms. He produced a movie that grossed tens of millions at the box office, was represented by one of the largest television agencies and used to be friends with well-known actors. But then he had trouble getting work, and after a while was unable to pay rent. His family moved in with a friend, but then that house went into foreclosure. So four months ago, with nowhere else to turn, he arrived at the shelter with his wife and two boys. "I did everything I could not to end up in the stereotype of a shelter," says the producer, who asks not to be identified because he fears jeopardizing his chance of landing work. "I want out of here so bad I don't even want to engage in the culture. I don't want to be comfortable because I'm not."

Government's Customer Service Ratings Improve, Still Not Great

Did you know that President Barack Obama signed an executive order in April that requires federal agencies to improve their customer service? Yeah, me either. But maybe fewer people will want to nominate the federal government as the Worst Company in America in 2012, because a recent survey by federal IT network MeriTalk indicates that the quality of customer service from the government is going up. A little. 31% of respondents said that they were satisfied with government services, up 24% from last year. The highest-rated agencies? The Social Security Administration and the IRS.

The citywide spraying of pesticides

I do not understand what the point is, of poisoning our citizens and polluting our community with this antiquated ritual of citywide spraying of pesticides.

I was in the Deer Harbour community and they were spraying at 6PM in the evening while children were playing, people walking their dogs and other were maintaining their lawns.

Last nite on the east side our street had the pleasure of a double dose as he came by twice.  Why do we have to pay an additional fee to restore the bay, and then also pay taxes to have someone drive around and pollute our community which ultimately ends up in the bay?  Doesn't seem logical.  I have lived in other cities and no where else does this.  Want to lower our cancer rate?  Get rid of the truck.  Can anyone give me a valid reason why we still do this other than "because we always have".
