MDGOP Chairman Alex Mooney Statement On Redistricting Lawsuit

Today, a lawsuit has been filed by African-American voters against the State of Maryland and the recently passed gerrymandered Congressional Map at the Federal Court in Greenbelt, Maryland. The Maryland Republican Party applauds the lawsuit and its intentions to bring fair representation to all Marylanders.

"We join the Fannie Lou Hamer PAC, the Legacy Foundation, Marylanders for Fair and Coherent Representation, and citizens from across Maryland to reaffirm our belief that redistricting should not be done solely on partisanship or incumbent preference," said Maryland Republican Party Chairman Alex Mooney.

"We are eager to see the Governor's map remedied so that the rights of all Marylanders, regardless of race, geography or political affiliation, are not denied."
A copy of the lawsuit can be found here.

Kennel Club Health Clinics

Salisbury MD Kennel Club contracted with Veterinarians who are experts in their fields to hold Health Clinics on Saturday at the Civic Center.  The clinics are open to the public.  A fee is charged, but much less than an office visit would be.  Information for entering the EYE CLINIC and the EAR CLINIC may be found at http://www.easternshoreclassic.com/.  We regret that the HEART CLINIC has been cancelled.

From The Front Lines To The Unemployment Line

Some veterans that fought valiantly overseas find themselves in another fight at home: The battle to find jobs.

Far too many Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have trouble finding jobs. That can be especially hard for wounded warriors.

Ryan Faber served in Iraq until he went on medical leave in 2005 because of injuries and the effects of five concussions. For years, finding the right job was almost impossible. He just landed a graphic design position with veteran-operated M1 for Vets, a group that organizes shooting competitions for wounded warriors.

Faber hopes new legislation offering a tax break to private companies that hire vets will ease the struggle for others.

Bernanke Says That Any Criticism Of The Federal Reserve Is Based On "Misconceptions"

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is taking his show on the road in at attempt to help Americans feel better about the Federal Reserve.  During a visit to the Fort Bliss headquarters of the Army’s 1st Armored Division this week, Bernanke held a town hall meeting during which he took questions from some of the soldiers.  Bernanke tried to sound as compassionate as possible as he assured the soldiers that the Federal Reserve is looking out for the American people and is doing everything that it can to help create jobs.
At one point, Bernanke even made the following statement [23]: "For a lot of people, I know, it doesn't feel like the recession ever ended."  That probably helped a lot of people feel better.  A few probably even had a good cry.  But what Bernanke did not explain to the troops is that the Federal Reserve is very much responsible for the fact that unemployment is rampant, for the fact that the U.S. dollar is rapidly being devalued and for the fact that we have accumulated the largest national debt in the history of the world.

Ben Bernanke keeps insisting that the Federal Reserve has two main jobs (fighting inflation and keeping unemployment low) and that it is working incredibly hard to accomplish that dual mandate.  During his visit with the soldiers [23] he told them that the Fed is very determined to create more jobs for the American people....

Teachers, Facing Low Salaries, Opt To Moonlight

MIAMI (AP) - By day, Wade Brosz teaches American history at an A-rated Florida middle school. By night, he is a personal trainer at 24 Hour Fitness.

Brosz took the three-night a week job at the gym after his teaching salary was frozen, summer school was reduced drastically, and the state bonus for board certified teachers was cut. He figures that he and his wife, also a teacher, are making about $20,000 less teaching than expected to, combined.

"The second job was to get back what was lost through cuts," said Brosz, a nationally board certified teacher. "It was tougher and tougher to make ends meet. I started personal training because it's flexible hours."

SALISBURY FIRE DEPARTMENT ADDS NEW TOY TO FLEET

Salisbury has added another special purpose Hackney to their fleet, this one for supplying high volume breathing air support and on-scene lighting.

The 12.75-ft body is mounted on a Freightliner M2 cab/chassis with Cummins ISC-330 engine; Allison 3000EVS transmission; 12,000# front axle and 23,000# rear axle.  Vertical exhaust prevent collection of noxious gases from accumulating beneath the awnings when they are deployed. Hackney’s exclusive drop/pinch frame was specified to permit mounting of the generator inside the left front compartment for protection against road spray.

The primary mission of the vehicle is to provide on-scene recharging of 4500 psi SCBA’s. That is accomplished using a Scott 26 cfm air compressor coupled with a RevolveAir fill station. The system permits a single operator to fill not less than 20 SCBA’s an hour, based on an average 500 psi residual. The rear compartment carries forty (40) spare SCBA bottles, making it highly unlikely that the department will ever deplete air supplies to firefighters.

Arab League To Suspend Syria Over Bloody Crackdown

22-member body issues ultimatum after killings continue despite peace plan

The Arab League voted Saturday to suspend Syria in four days if it does not end its bloody crackdown against anti-government protesters.

The decision was a symbolic blow to a nation that prides itself on being a powerhouse of Arab nationalism.

Qatar Foreign Minister Hamad bin Jassim said 18 countries agreed to the suspension, which will take effect on Wednesday. Syria, Lebanon and Yemen voted against it, and Iraq abstained.

The Arab League also will introduce political and economic sanctions against Syria, he said.

When Kids Drink, Parents Are Legally Responsible

WASHINGTON -- Teenagers aren't the only ones at risk when they get into cars after drinking. Their parents are liable for what happens when the party is over.

That message is being hammered home by Montgomery County State's Attorney John McCarthy, who told reporters that when parents break up a party where teens have been drinking, they should take away the keys and get the kids home some other way.

"Think twice before allowing those young people to go back into their cars heavily intoxicated," he said.

HISTORICAL COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER 11-12-11

Dentists

Today we can’t imagine the excruciating pain people went through before the age of painless dentistry. There was no such thing as “saving the tooth”. It just came out, usually by the local barber who doubled as the local solution to any dental problems you might have. This was done by pulling the aching tooth with a pair of pliers. They had something called laudanum they gave people for the pain. It was an opium preparation that was banned by the government at the turn of the 20th century. People took laudanum for any number of reasons because it took away any pain associated with anything. Must have been some powerful stuff.

With the introduction of Novocain, modern dentistry skills were practiced by medically approved dentists. The listings in Salisbury begin in 1878 with just two people listed as “dentists”. Since there was no “Dr.” in front of their name, they could just as well have been barbers who did the extraction of the offending tooth. There was even a Mrs. A. F. Colley listed in 1907 as a dentist. The first mention of Dr. before a name was in 1940 when an Afro-American named G. Durrett White was listed in the Salisbury Directory. I imagine it was just an omission that he was the only dentist listed. The number of dentists in Salisbury escalated to fourteen by 1950 to serve the needs of the community.

Nowadays, they recommend a visit to the dentist at around two years old. When I was growing up the first visit was when you got your first cavity. Around 1950, municipalities started introducing fluoride into the local water and that has been a blessing to the health of children’s teeth.

Losing your baby teeth is something everyone goes through. We are all familiar with the “tooth fairy”. I used to save every one of my boys’ teeth as they came out and put the customary quarter under their pillow in exchange for the tooth. Times sure change as my son told me a couple of years ago that my granddaughter lost her first tooth and he decided the tooth fairy should give out one of the new gold colored dollars instead of a quarter. The next morning his daughter came in to show him what the tooth fairy had left. She had never seen one of the coins and asked him what it was. When he told her it was a dollar and that he had only gotten a quarter when he was little. She told him that the tooth fairy must like her better than she had liked him.

There have been so many great innovations in dentistry today that there is no reason for anyone to not take advantage of them. Bonding is one thing that comes to mind. It is relatively inexpensive and can restore a tooth to its original appearance in quick order. Times change – sometimes for the better.

Obama: We'll Use GOP Debates Against Them

President Obama told a group of Hispanic journalists today that his re-election campaign could win over Latino voters just by showing them clips from Republican debates.

"I don't think it requires us to go negative in the sense of us running a bunch of ads that are false, or character assassinations," Obama said, as reported by Univision."It will be based on facts."
