Maryland Loses Lacrosse Movie, Ehrlich Loses Patience
Feature Film on Maryland’s sport to be shot in another state
(Item from the Maryland Daily Record of June 29, 2010: Hollywood’s first-ever movie about Lacrosse now appears set to be filmed in another state; Maryland is home to its Hall of Fame and proud tradition.)
“It is sad but significant to find that Maryland couldn’t even attract the production of a movie on a sport whose deepest traditions are in our state,” Bob Ehrlich said today. Ehrlich has pledged to revive funding for a state tax credit which brought numerous Film and TV productions to Maryland during his administration. “With a modest investment in attracting productions to Maryland, we could create hundreds of jobs for the craft and trade employees who work as technicians, caterers, security personnel and construction crews every time a film or series comes here to shoot,” Ehrlich said. “It’s a small investment that brings a huge return, and an easy way to create jobs when our state and our people need them most. The failure of the O’Malley Administration to fund this tax credit fits the pattern of their disinterest in job creation and encouragement for small businesses.”
Will Larry Hogan Be The Next Lt. Governor Of Maryland?
Salisbury News has learned through the grapevine that Larry Hogan will be Ehrlich's choice for Lt. Governor.
Larry was the former Appointment Secretary for Bab back in the day. No, not the person who schedules his calendar. He was in charge of Board of Election appointments and so forth.
We hear a formal announcement will be made on Thursday but you know Salisbury News, we get the scoop before anyone else does. Is the cat out of the bag? Tune in Thursday for the official announcement.
WHAT A DAY
Another announcement to be made is Chris Mills has filed to run against Rich Colburn. Things are heating up now! More to come......
Marina Grand Re-Opening
Salisbury Mayor James Ireton, Jr. announces the grand re-opening of the Port of Salisbury Marina, Thursday July 1st, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. and invites the public to attend. The marina is located downtown at 506 W. Main Street. Port of Salisbury is a full service marina with free Wi-Fi internet, bicycles for transportation, showers and a barbeque & picnic area. The newly arrived and installed fuel tanks are operable with both conventional (ethanol-free) gasoline and low sulfur diesel. There are boat slips available with the option to live aboard.
Michael Murray, Marina Commission Chairman says, “I am pleased to see the marina is back in full swing once again with fuel accessibility drawing our community and local boaters as well as transients. On behalf of myself and the Marina Committee, I would like to thank all past and present mayors and councils that have helped make the marina become what it is today. I know they would be pleased to see how the marina has become an asset to the City of Salisbury, Wicomico County and the Wicomico River. We’re here but we don’t just want to stop here. We always want to be looking ahead at the growth for the community. Reflecting back to the 80’s since the original ribbon-cutting of this marina, we certainly have come a long way. I’m proud and grateful to the mayor and city council for what has transpired in the last few months to get our marina back on its feet.”
Salisbury Marina Project Engineer, Weston Young says, “Improvements to the Port of Salisbury Marina, including the new fuel tanks, are thanks in large part to the Waterway Improvement Fund grant through the Department of Natural Resources Boating Services as well as the City Council. Since the Public Works Department has acquired the operations of the marina, we have worked closely with the Marina Commission to improve the services we are able to offer to patrons.”
“The revitalization of the port of Salisbury marina culminates in Thursday’s grand reopening. As an example of what government does right I congratulate City Council for taking the steps to get the marina back on track. Our partners: the Marina Commission, the Department of Natural Resources Boating Services, Urban Salisbury, and the boaters who utilize our marina are applauded for helping the city take another step in the revitalization of Salisbury’s urban core,” said Mayor Ireton.

Three New Dog Breeds Recognized By AKC
Three exotic strains of pooches that put the “wow” into bow-wow are being recognized by the American Kennel Club — allowing them to strut their stuff at AKC-sanctioned breed competitions in the U.S., including next February’s Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York’s Madison Square Garden.
The AKC announced exclusively to TODAYshow.com that the Icelandic sheepdog, the Cane Corso and the Leonberger will be added Wednesday to the list of 164 breeds already registered with the organization.
“It’s great: We’re adding three new dogs to our registry,” AKC spokeswoman Christina Duffney told TODAYshow.com. “As of Wednesday, they’re able to compete in shows and take part in any AKC activity.”
Old dogs, new recognition Though new to the AKC, the three breeds have been around for centuries.
The Icelandic sheepdog, for example, arrived on that island nation with the Vikings, who settled there more than 1,000 years ago. The breed — part of the spitz family, which includes chow chows and the American Eskimo — was used to herd sheep, cattle and horses. Revered in their homeland, Icelandic sheepdogs are regarded as one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, but are only now getting formal AKC recognition.
The lion-maned Leonberger, named after the town of Leonberg, Germany, from which it hails, has been part of that country’s culture since the 1800s. Its exquisite long fur made it popular with German artists, who often used Leonbergers as models. Despite their large size, they’re considered cuddly and get along well with children and other family members.
But the Leonberger is more than just a pretty, friendly face — they’re athletic and have been used as water rescue dogs and been trained to jump out of helicopters.
The third newly recognized breed is also the rarest. In fact, the Cane Corso was nearly extinct until a small group of breeders brought it back in the 1980s. It’s a member of the mastiff family, and as such, it’s a muscle-bound dog that was highly prized in its native Italy for hunting difficult prey such as boar and fighting alongside soldiers in ancient battles.
But these days, the Cane Corso isn’t overly fierce. They’re known to be very attached to their owners and families, and they’re intelligent and easily trained.
Just being a distinct type of dog is not enough to be called an official AKC breed, Duffney said.

U.S. Consumer Confidence Crumbled In June
NEW YORK — A monthly report on U.S. consumer confidence, released Tuesday, showed a sharp decline in June from May, reversing a three-month climb, as Americans digested a batch of unsettling news that raised new concerns about the economy's health.
The closely-watched U.S. Consumer Confidence Index, released by the Conference Board, a private research group, showed a reading of 52.9 in June from May's 62.7 reading.
The index — which measures how shoppers feel about business conditions, the job market and the next six months — had been recovering fitfully since hitting an all-time low of 25.3 in February 2009.
A reading above 90 indicates the economy is on solid footing; above 100 signals strong growth. Economists watch the number closely because consumer spending including health care and other major items, accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.
Economists had already believed confidence will remain weak for at least another year because of stubbornly high unemployment. But a batch of economic data — from disappointing job figures in May to dismal housing numbers — is increasing worries that the road to recovery could be rockier than anticipated. Amid such concerns, the Dow Jones Industrials has fallen 9.5 percent since late April.
"We're concerned about the strength of the economic recovery from here," said Richard Hastings, macro and consumer strategist with Global Hunter Securities. "That would suggest weaker consumer confidence" for the next few months.

So Where Does Salisbury News Stand In Support Of Candidates
BREAKING NEWS! JOHN T. CANNON ANNOUNCES BID FOR MARYLAND HOUSE OF DELEGATES – 38A
Wicomico County Councilman-At-Large John T. Cannon has announced his candidacy for the Maryland General Assembly, House of Delegates - District 38A of Somerset and Wicomico counties. With the recent, heartbreaking loss of Delegate Page Elmore, Councilman Cannon stated, “We are saddened by Delegate Page Elmore’s passing. Page had a long history of providing strong leadership and exemplary service to the people of Somerset and Wicomico. All will sorely miss his friendship and leadership. Carolyn and her family are in our thoughts and prayers.”
The Cannon Campaign message is to continue this legacy and ensure we preserve and protect our Eastern Shore heritage, industries and educational institutions so important to our way of life. “Whether it’s agriculture, watermen, education, small business or the poultry industry, we need to encourage State support and economic growth.” Cannon feels that continued over regulation and taxation only threatens the very foundation of our local economy. “We need a strong voice in Annapolis to stand up for the men and women of District 38A and our partners across the entire lower Eastern Shore. And we need to accomplish this with an effective, bi-partisan approach.”
We also need to preserve our quality of life on the Eastern Shore. Our industries and lifestyles are dependant upon a healthy environment and we want to protect our farmlands and waterways in measured steps that will not compromise the foundation of the economy on which we depend.
Cannon, an Eastern Shore native, is in the commercial and residential property management business in Wicomico County. He has taken an active role in his community; working with civic, business, and political leaders locally and throughout the State. He currently holds the County-Council-At-Large seat on the Wicomico County Council and is looking to expand his role of public service at the state level for all of the citizens of Somerset and Wicomico counties.
Cannon has always been a strong advocate of fiscal responsibility. “Annapolis will have great budgetary challenges over these next few years and we want Representatives in Annapolis who will work to reduce the State’s spending and not place the burden of balancing the budget on the backs of the local counties, municipalities and citizens.”
Cannon says, “I would be vigilant in protecting Somerset and Wicomico constituents from disproportionate spending and taxation practices. We’ve heard of taxation without representation. Now more than ever, we’re seeing taxation without compensation. In other words, we’re paying into a system but seeing little in return. This Legislature will have to work together to return highway user funds to the local governments and refrain from raiding local income tax reserves or passing the high cost of educational pensions and benefits to the local county governments and constituents. No county can afford such losses or expenses.”
Cannon describes his approach as follows, “You have to address every issue, large or small, with an even temperament, a willingness to listen well and the integrity to follow through with strong conviction. You cannot violate the people’s trust with shallow promises and half-hearted commitments.”
Cannon assures the voters, “As a state representative, I will always keep in mind - and never forget - we are all local representatives first. These next few years in the General Assembly are critical for Maryland and the Somerset and Wicomico citizens deserve only the best in leadership. This is not the time for your run-of-the-mill lawmakers and bureaucrats. Rest assured I bring to the table open, honest and strong leadership to build a consensus when necessary and stand our ground when not. I’m prepared to meet the challenges ahead and look to the future with enthusiasm for the privilege to serve the men and women of Somerset and Wicomico Counties as their Representative in the House of Delegates, District 38A of this great State of Maryland.”

SEARCH STILL ON FOR DRIVER IN FATAL ANNAPOLIS HIT AND RUN
Ghassen A. Sabra, 52, of Goldsboro, N.C., was struck and killed by a hit and run driver early on the morning of June 3, 2010. Troopers believe the victim was struck sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 1:00 a.m., on eastbound Rt. 50 at Bay Dale Drive.
Sabra was working for Sabra, Wang & Associates, Inc., of Halethorpe, Md., a company under contract with the Maryland State Highway Administration to conduct traffic surveys. Sabra, who was wearing reflective clothing and had a light activated on the top of his truck parked nearby, was stopped at the location to check on traffic counting equipment. He was not deploying or retrieving the equipment as earlier reported by State Police. He had deployed the equipment on June 1st. He returned on June 3rd to ensure the equipment was operating and had not been damaged.
State Police CRASH Team investigators believe the victim was on foot in lane one (fast lane) of eastbound Rt. 50 when he was struck by the unidentified vehicle. His body was thrown into lane two and was later struck by a tractor trailer driver who did not see the victim until it was too late to stop. The truck driver stopped, as did an ambulance that was behind the truck. Emergency medical personnel summoned police and pronounced Sabra dead at the scene.
State Police investigators have collected and viewed security surveillance tapes from businesses in the area and continue to examine evidence from the scene and review data from the State Highway Administration and the Maryland Transportation Authority. A description of a suspect vehicle has not been developed at this time, but investigators are continuing their efforts.
Anyone with information about this crash is urged to contact Maryland State Police at the Glen Burnie Barracks at 410-761-5130. Callers may remain anonymous.
Feingold Will Vote 'No' On Wall Street Bill
The move raises pressure on Senate Democrats to win the votes of Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and a handful of Senate Republicans.
Senate Democrats aim to pass the Wall Street overhaul bill this week, but the passing of Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) has given them little room to negotiate votes. House and Senate lawmakers finalized the legislation in a conference process early Friday morning.
"As I have indicated for some time now, my test for the financial regulatory reform bill is whether it will prevent another crisis," Feingold said in a statement. "The conference committee's proposal fails that test and for that reason I will not vote to advance it."
Feingold and Cantwell voted against ending debate on the bill in May and against the overall bill. Democrats were able to advance the legislation with the help of Republican Sens. Scott Brown (Mass.), Olympia Snowe (Maine) and Susan Collins (Maine).
Brown has expressed disappointment at the final bill that passed through the conference committee. If he votes against the legislation in the Senate, Democrats will need to hold the rest of the votes they had in May and swing either Cantwell or another Republican to advance the bill.
Congresswoman Fears Hizbullah ‘Israel-Like Bombings’ In US
North Carolina legislator Sue Myrick wrote Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, urging a task force "to engage U.S. and Mexican law enforcement and border patrol officials about Hizbullah's presence, activities, and connections to gangs and drug cartels."
Echoing previous reports of Hizbullah’s activity in the profitable drug trade, Myrick wrote, "The connection between Hizbullah and the drug cartels has seemed to grow over the past few years. This may be especially true on the U.S. southern border.
“Across states in the Southwest, well trained officials are beginning to notice the tattoos of gang members in prisons are being written in Farsi. We have typically seen tattoos in Arabic, but Farsi implies a Persian influence that can likely be traced back to Iran and its proxy army, Hizbullah. These tattoos in Farsi are almost always seen in combination with gang or drug cartel tattoos.”
Myrick also warned that the United States may face terror tunnels, similar to those Hizbullah used in the Second Lebanon War against Israel in 2006. Noting that the terrain along the American-Mexican border is similar to Israel’s, she wrote, “Hizbullah is extremely skilled in the construction of tunnels.
Federal government documents have shown that that the United States apprehended two Syrians and 17 Iranians over a 12-month period ending this past April. Also nabbed at the border were dozens of others from other Muslim countries, including Sudan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
Heritage: Dependency On Government Skyrockets
The Foundation's annual Index of Dependence on Government jumped nearly 14 percent in the past year — the largest single-year increase since 1970.
Study director William W. Beach, who oversees the Foundation's Center for Data Analysis, described the result as "shocking."
"That's an enormous increase," he said. "The usual increase is somewhere between 3 to 5 percent, which is bad enough. But to see a 14 percent increase is just amazing."
The index is based on the level of federal government expenditures on a roster of services, including housing, health and welfare, education, food stamps, and so forth.
Beach expressed concern that, with nearly 50 percent of American wage earners paying no federal taxes, and a rapidly expanding culture of dependence in America, the nation may be approaching a tipping point after which it will be politically impossible to make the changes needed to restore competitiveness to the U.S. economy.
Terry Miller, a former ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council during the Bush administration, predicted Monday that Americans' sharply increasing dependence on their government to take care of them would have a "terrible toll" on U.S. international competitiveness.
"The thing that's really set the U.S. economy apart from other economies in the world historically has been the economic freedom enjoyed by our citizens," said Miller. "This has been known as the land of opportunity.
"If that becomes instead 'the land of the government dole,' which it looks like it's becoming based on the really horrifying results [in the study]," he said, "then I think what you're going to find is Americans no longer able to compete internationally."
A Message From One Of Our Advertisers
I wanted to let you know that in the last week I have received 2 phone calls stating that your blog site is #1, linked to a white supremacist group, and #2, your blog was happy over the tragic death of Sam Vincent. Both of which I have confirmed are not true!
In reviewing your advertisers, they are all locally owned, small businesses like mine. As hard as it is for us to compete against large corporations, we work 16 hours days trying to stay afloat. Your blog makes it very affordable for us to advertise. We all need to live and work together so we can make it throught the rough economical times that has hit our country.
For those that want to be negative about this blog, as you've been told repeatedly, quit reading the blog, and harrassing us.
Let's all work together to make the best of this faultering economy.

A Letter To The Editor
The next occasion I found myself going down rt. 13 and looked down as we all do to realize I was going 65. At that instant another trooper blew by me like I was standing still. No lights or anything. As I approached the next intersection I slowed for a red light and looked over at a restaurant to watch the officer get out of his car in civilian clothes. Getting a bite to eat I guess. Finally today I was on my way home when another law enforcement officer again blew by me like I was parked. Again, no lights or anything. Changed lanes with no signals. Even rode people’s bumpers. As I got to the next red light he was stopped there waiting first at the signal. As traffic moved again he flashed lights to get around people he eventually came up on. If there was something he was responding to I’m sure he would have flashed and went through the light when he could. He did not and he was first at the light when I got there.
Point being, I think some of these guys need to be looked at. I don’t claim to know all the protocols and things like that but I’m sure I’m not the only one that watches this “above the law” mentality. There are so many good officers that it’s a shame to see what you could clearly call an abuse of power. After the horrible tragedy of last week we don’t need to be reminded how we need to be more careful on our roadways. I totally respect law enforcement Joe. I am grateful how they place their lives on the lives to protect us all but no one is above the laws we all have to follow. I’m not saying that all of our officers are this way but if you watch things carefully you will see blatant instances like these and its just not right.
Kratovil Kickoff Fact Check
Not-So-Independent Congressman Skews Record During Kickoff Tour
KRATOVIL IS NOT THE INDEPENDENT HE CLAIMS TO BE
Independent? Kratovil’s voting record indicates otherwise. According to The Washington Post vote database, Kratovil has been voting with Nancy Pelosi-led democrats in Congress 85 percent of the time, as of June 28, 2010.
KRATOVIL VOTED FOR THE LARGEST INCREASE IN GOVT. SPENDING IN US HISTORY
On his campaign stops last Saturday, Kratovil said the federal government must tighten its belt in the same manner that local governments and individuals have. However, Kratovil voted for the $819 billion stimulus package that has failed to create a single job for Maryland’s First Congressional District.
According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the cost of the stimulus package could soar even higher, reaching $1 trillion
· According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), combining the spending and revenue effects of H.R. 1 upon enactment of the conference report would increase federal budget deficits by $787 billion. (Congressional Budget Office, “Cost estimate for the conference agreement for H.R. 1, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009,” Feb. 13, 2009)
· The package would be financed by borrowing, which would result in additional interest costs. CBO estimated these costs would reach $347 billion for the House-passed version of the stimulus package. When these interest costs are taken into account, the total cost of the package could reach $1trillion. (Letter from Douglas W. Elmendorf, Director, CBO to Rep. Paul Ryan, Jan. 27, 2009)
KRATOVIL WAS FOR THE GOVERNMENT TAKEOVER OF HEALTH CARE BEFORE HE WAS AGAINST IT.
At his campaign stop in Salisbury, Kratovil said he’s not afraid to buck party leadership, especially in regard to his no vote on health care. But Kratovil was a deciding vote in ensuring the health care bill would move forward to a vote.
· Kratovil on “moving the bill forward” would be the first PQ vote in the House: Roll Call 881 – he voted YES on the PQ for the rule on the House HC bill (http://link.sc.states.gop.com/?65-813-2342-125-9722)
House Democrat leadership gave a vulnerable Kratovil a pass on the final health care vote but Kratovil is on the record supporting the legislation throughout the process.
· “[Kratovil]…is on record supporting the public option for health care—though he voted against the House version of the health care bill in the end…” (Emily Esfahani Smith, “Democrat in Danger,” Weekly Standard, 2/22/10)
· “I believe that a public option may help reduce costs by increasing competition and expanding consumer choice…” (“Health care,” Kratovil congressional website, accessed 3/23/10)
· Kratovil signed a far-left, Big Labor-funded group’s petition calling for “a public insurance plan.”
Are Cameras The New Guns?
Even if the encounter involves you and may be necessary to your defense, and even if the recording is on a public street where no expectation of privacy exists.
The legal justification for arresting the "shooter" rests on existing wiretapping or eavesdropping laws, with statutes against obstructing law enforcement sometimes cited. Illinois, Massachusetts, and Maryland are among the 12 states in which all parties must consent for a recording to be legal unless, as with TV news crews, it is obvious to all that recording is underway. Since the police do not consent, the camera-wielder can be arrested. Most all-party-consent states also include an exception for recording in public places where "no expectation of privacy exists" (Illinois does not) but in practice this exception is not being recognized.
Massachusetts attorney June Jensen represented Simon Glik who was arrested for such a recording. She explained, "[T]he statute has been misconstrued by Boston police. You could go to the Boston Common and snap pictures and record if you want." Legal scholar and professor Jonathan Turley agrees, "The police are basing this claim on a ridiculous reading of the two-party consent surveillance law - requiring all parties to consent to being taped. I have written in the area of surveillance law and can say that this is utter nonsense."
The courts, however, disagree. A few weeks ago, an Illinois judge rejected a motion to dismiss an eavesdropping charge against Christopher Drew, who recorded his own arrest for selling one-dollar artwork on the streets of Chicago. Although the misdemeanor charges of not having a peddler's license and peddling in a prohibited area were dropped, Drew is being prosecuted for illegal recording, a Class I felony punishable by 4 to 15 years in prison.

A Message From Candidate Dustin Mills
It was with a sad and heavy heart that I heard about the death of Delegate Page
Elmore, a great man and leader for the Eastern Shore. I had the pleasure of knowing
Page and working with him on several occasions; he was a man I considered a mentor
and friend. I always admired the way he carried himself and the easy manner in which he spoke with both opponents and friends. While we did not always agree, Page was truly a stalwart leader in Annapolis. He always represented his district well and was a strong representative for his constituents. He was a man many admired, despite their political affiliation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Elmore family in their time of grief.
Please keep Delegate Elmore and his family in your prayers as you go throughout your
day, for he will be sorely missed.
Respectfully,
Dustin Mills

A Letter To The Editor
I recently had a situation at a local dentist office in Salisbury that I wanted to make aware to the community and possibly other patients of this office. I would greatly appreciate it if you would post this. I went in for a regular dental cleaning at Merritt Mill Dental several weeks ago and everything went as usual. The following day I received a text message from someone. I was not sure who it was at the time. Come to find out it was a employee of Merritt Mill Dental. I quickly learned that this young man went into my medical file and got my cell phone number.
I called the dentist office to speak to a supervisor and the young man that text me hung up on me when I told him who I was. I called the office back and insisted to speak to a supervisor immediately. A supervisor got on the phone and I explained the situation to her. She completely minimized the situation and stated sometimes patients exchange numbers with employees and give them permission to call or text them. I explained to the supervisor that I am a happily married and faithful woman and a mother of two children. The supervisor's response to me was that she would speak to the employee and have him call me to apologize. To my knowledge no disciplinary action was taken and the young man is still employed there.
I am completely outraged by this office's conduct. If this young man went into my file to get my cell phone number, what other information did he take?! My purpose of posting this on your blog is to make other people aware that this had occurred. I'm sure I'm not the first person he's done this to and probably wont be the last.
5 DAYS LATER!!!!!
CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM
When the menus were presented, we ordered salads, sandwiches, and soups, except for Jim who said, “Ice Cream, please. Two scoops, chocolate.”
I wasn't sure my ears heard right, and the others were aghast. “Along with heated apple pie,” Jim added, completely unabashed.
We tried to act quite nonchalant, as if people did this all the time, but when our orders were brought out, I didn't enjoy mine.
I couldn't take my eyes off Jim as his pie a-la-mode went down. The other guys couldn't believe it. They ate their lunches silently and grinned.
The next time I went out to eat, I called and invited Jim. I lunched on white meat tuna. He ordered a parfait.
I smiled. He asked if he amused me.
I answered, “Yes, you do, but also you confuse me.
How come you order rich desserts, while I feel I must be sensible?”
He laughed and said, “I'm tasting all that is Possible.
“I try to eat the food I need, and do the things I should. But life's so short, my friend, I hate missing out on something good.
“This year I realized how old I was. (He grinned) I haven't been this old before. So, before I die, I've got to try those things that for years I had ignored.
I haven't smelled all the flowers yet. There are too many trout streams I haven't fished. There's more fudge sundaes to wolf down and kites to be flown overhead.
“There are too many golf courses I haven't played. I've not laughed at all the jokes. I've missed a lot of sporting events and potato chips and cokes.
“I want to wade again in water and feel ocean spray on my face. I want to sit in a country church once more and thank God for His grace.
“I want peanut butter every day spread on my morning toast. I want un-timed long distance calls to the folks I love the most.
“I haven't cried at all the movies yet, or walked in the morning rain. I need to feel wind on my face. I want to be in love again.
“So, if I choose to have dessert, instead of having dinner, then should I die before night fall, I'd say I died a winner, because I missed out on nothing. I filled my heart's desire. I had that final chocolate mousse before my life expired.”
With that, I called the waitress over. “I've changed my mind,” I said. “I want what he is having, only add some more whipped cream!”

Pair Hunted After Shooting Leaves Cops 'Critical'
TAMPA — Two Tampa police officers were shot and critically wounded Tuesday during a traffic stop, prompting a major hunt for the car's two occupants.
Citing hospital sources, two TV stations reported that one of the officers had died. However, there was no official confirmation.
The car was pulled over because it did not have a visible tag, police said, and it was discovered one of the occupants was wanted on an arrest warrant, according to the St. Petersburg Times.
Tampa Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said the officer called for back-up after a background check revealed the male passenger in the car was wanted for a misdemeanor.
The car was being driven by a woman but the shooting, which happened just after 2:15 a.m. at 50th Street and 23rd Avenue, is believed to have been carried out by a male passenger, police told the Times.
McElroy said the two officers were transported to the hospital in "extremely critical condition."
'Threat to the community'
Police said they think they know the identities of the car's occupants, but did not release their names. "Our first and foremost concern is to catch these suspects,'' said McElroy, according to the Times. "They're certainly a threat to the community.''

Russia: U.S. Spy Ring Allegations 'Baseless'
WASHINGTON — U.S. allegations that Russian spies have been working under cover in the U.S. for years are "baseless and improper," Russia's foreign ministry said on Tuesday, adding that their arrests are a throwback to the Cold War.
The ministry said in a statement that U.S. actions were unfounded and pursued "unseemly goals." It voiced regret that the arrests came even though President Obama recently hailed a reset in ties between the former Cold War foes, and just days after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visited Washington .
Sergei Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, also told reporters in Jerusalem that Moscow is awaiting an explanation from the U.S. and that it is studying the allegations, Interfax news agency reported.
"The subect was not explained to us. I hope they will explain," Lavrov said. "The choice of timing was particularly graceful."
Russia's foreign intelligence service and the chief spokesman for Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told Reuters they had no comment on the allegations.
The Justice Department announced Monday that 10 people had been arrested and face charges of spying for the Russian government. Allegedly the suspects were tasked with penetrating U.S. policymaking circles and hiding "all connections between themselves and Russia" by posing as civilians.
They have American names like Cynthia Murphy, but the U.S. says they are actually Russian secret agents whose "deep cover" stretched back 20 years and included scenes from a bad spy novel — including code words and document exchanges at public areas like New York's Central Park.
