5 Million Doses Of Nasal H1N1 Vaccine Recalled

Spray is safe, but appears to lose its strength over time, FDA says

WASHINGTON - Drugmaker MedImmune is recalling nearly 5 million doses of swine flu vaccine because the nasal spray appears to lose strength over time, federal health officials announced Tuesday.

The vaccine recall is the second this month caused by declining potency and comes as public health officials urge millions of Americans to get vaccinated against swine flu.

The action affects more than 4.6 million doses, but the vast majority have already been used, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Agency officials said the vaccine was strong enough when it was distributed in October and November.

Suspect(s): David Choma, 31, of Marabou Drive in New Castle, Delaware

Resume: Over the course of several days, the Delaware State Police Robbery Squad had been investigating a series of incidents in which a subject had entered the above listed establishments and robbed the stores by implying or displaying a weapon. In each of the incidents, the bandit was demanding cash.

A break came in the case when a detective from the New Castle County Police Department shared an internet tip in which David Choma was identified as the robber. DSP Detectives compared surveillance video from several of the robberies and noted a positive match to a mug shot of David Choma on file.

Arrest warrants were obtained charging Choma with the following offenses: four counts of Robbery (felony), one count of Attempted Robbery (felony) and one count of Wearing a Disguise during the Commission of a Felony (felony).

Choma was arrested yesterday. Detectives located him driving on Salem Church Road in the area of Chapman Road. Initially, Choma tried to flee in his vehicle; however, his car got stuck in the snow. He then fled from his car on foot and investigators apprehended him after a brief foot chase and struggle. He was transported back to Troop 2 for his arraignment. Bail was set at $111,000.00 cash and Mr. Choma was committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institute.

MAYOR SUSTAINS FURTHER INJURY, ADMITTED TO PRMC

Mayor James Ireton, Jr., during his recovery from a broken ankle, has sustained a fall and has been admitted to PRMC in the early morning of December 22, 2009. Having multiple levels of disc herniation, the Mayor will be undergoing appropriate treatment. He expects to be discharged on Wednesday, December 23, 2009. House Dem Blames Leaders For Party Switch

Democratic Rep. Parker Griffith announced Tuesday that he's switching parties – saying he can no longer align himself “with a party that continues to pursue legislation that is bad for our country, hurts our economy and drives us further and further into debt.”

“Unfortunately there are those in the Democratic Leadership that continue to push an agenda focused on massive new spending, tax increases, bailouts and a health care bill that is bad for our healthcare system,” Griffith said in a statement. “I have always considered myself to be an independent voice and I have tried to be that voice in Congress – but after watching this agenda firsthand I now believe that the differences in the two parties could not be more clear and that for me to be true to my core beliefs and values I must align myself with the Republican party and speak out clearly on these issues.

Griffith’s party switch comes on the eve of a pivotal congressional health care vote and will send a jolt through a Democratic House Caucus that has already been unnerved by the recent retirements of a handful of members who, like Griffith, hail from districts that offer prime pickup opportunities for the GOP in 2010.

OLD MAN WINTER HURTING KETTLE COLLECTIONS

Salisbury, Maryland…Winter weather continues to take a toll on the collections for the annual Red Kettle Campaign for The Salvation Army according to Captain Cameron Henderson, Salisbury Corps Officer.

“Just as the retail industry calls the last Saturday before Christmas “super Saturday”, we could call it the same thing for The Salvation Army”, Henderson said. “Traditionally, it is the largest collection day of the season. Due to the prediction of dire weather as well as the actual storm itself, our kettle collections for Friday and Saturday are down approximately $7,000.00 over last season. To compound the situation, the weather is continuing to hurt us with school closings, icy roads and bitter cold. All have combined to create more bell ringer cancellations than usual,” Henderson said.

“The Eastern Shore, particularly the lower shore, is known for its generosity. We are hoping that those who would have traditionally donated to kettles as Christmas draws near will donate through the mail or online,” Henderson said.

The Salisbury Corps is reporting that requests for services are running over 20% higher than 2008, so the need for donations continues to be great. The community is encouraged to send donations to The Salvation Army, 407 Oak Street, Salisbury, MD 21804 or to donate online at www.salvationarmy.com and click on virtual bell ringing. Reid Bill Says Future Congresses Cannot Repeal Parts Of Reid Bill

Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) pointed out some rather astounding language in the Senate health care bill during floor remarks [Monday night]. First, he noted that there are a number of changes to Senate rules in the bill--and it's supposed to take a 2/3 vote to change the rules. And then he pointed out that the Reid bill declares on page 1020 that the Independent Medicare Advisory Board cannot be repealed by future Congresses:

there's one provision that i found particularly troubling and it's under section c, titled "limitations on changes to this subsection."

and i quote -- "it shall not be in order in the senate or the house of representatives to consider any bill, resolution, amendment, or conference report that would repeal or otherwise change this subsection."

this is not legislation. it's not law. this is a rule change. it's a pretty big deal. we will be passing a new law and at the same time creating a senate rule that makes it out of order to amend or even repeal the law.

i'm not even sure that it's constitutional, but if it is, it most certainly is a senate rule. i don't see why the majority party wouldn't put this in every bill. if you like your law, you most certainly would want it to have force for future senates.

i mean, we want to bind future congresses. this goes to the fundamental purpose of senate rules: to prevent a tyrannical majority from trampling the rights of the minority or of future co congresses.

Charles Lollar

I just got a phone call from Charles wishing me and my family a Merry Christmas. I was so impressed that this guy would reach out to me in this way, having only met him a couple of times, that I wanted to make sure I mention him here. Charles is an impressive guy and has a great chance in the congressional race to unseat Hoyer and I will be supporting him any way that I can.



Charles Lollar hopes to unseat Hoyer The Sentinel Nov 11, 2009 Charles Lollar, 38, is hoping to upset House Majority Leader Rep. Steny Hoyer’s 28-year hold on Maryland’s 5th Congressional District by running for Congress in 2010.

Unseating a 28-year veteran will be no small task but Lollar, a former marine and father of four, says he’s up for the challenge.

Lollar said that because Hoyer has been in Congress for 28 years, he has not only forgotten about the people in the district but also the reasons why he was elected in the first place.
“There is something wrong with a congressman who represents Prince George’s County, but doesn’t even come to Prince George’s County, doesn’t give town hall meetings in Prince George’s County, takes advantage of our vote, and spends more time out of the state than in the state,” said Lollar. “You have to spend time in the county to make a difference.”

Mykel Harris, chairman of the Prince George’s County Republican Central Committee, said, “The conventional wisdom says that Hoyer cannot be beaten, just like the conventional wisdom says that David couldn’t beat Goliath. The reality is that even given Hoyer’s long term of service – and his very powerful position in Congress – he has been the captain of a ship that is deliberately steering toward a financial iceberg,” he said.

Prince George’s County holds a significant portion of the 5th congressional district votes. Historically, Hoyer has consistently won over Prince George’s County by large percentages in the general elections. In 2008, Hoyer won with 73.6 percent of the total votes.

“It is a benefit to the county to have someone in Congress at such a high level as the second-ranking person in Congress behind the speaker of the house as the majority leader,” said Terry Speigner, chairman of the Prince George’s Democrats. “That brings an immense amount of value not only to Maryland, but to district five and Prince George’s County.”

So far there are only officially two candidates running: Democrat Thomas Deflbaugh Sr., and Republican Collins A. Bailey, who ran against Hoyer in the last congressional election.
Lollar said he is running because he is concerned about the direction in which the country is headed.

One of his chief concerns is government spending. “We are running a $9 to $10 trillion dollar deficit, we’re trying to push a lot of dollars through to programs without stabilizing our economy, and our dollars are being weakened on the international front,” said Lollar.

He said the country needs to balance its budget. “I think if you ask anyone how important it is to only spend what you have and not more that, I think you would get complete agreement from everyone,” said Lollar.

Lollar said he is against abortion rights, same-sex marriages and in favor of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. He does not support Obama’s health-care reform policy and says that the government should focus more on immigration policies.

The Charles County resident and father of four, is the general manager for Cintas Corporation in Landover.

“The arrogance of Congress is out of control,” said Lollar. “I am concerned because I refuse to go out of this country and fight for my country just to come home and lose my country; I am just not going to do it.” His first officer assignment in combat was in Kosovo, in the Bosnia area, where he spent six months to a year away from his family.

Some people do not believe Lollar is right person for Congress. “What we don’t need in a congressman is someone who has the same ideal and platforms that George Bush had and that’s what Charles Lollar represents,” said Speigner. “Some of the same arguments we heard for the last eight years that put us in this situation that Obama’s trying to dig us out of.”

Lollar was born on the Yakima Indian Reservation in Washington state. He obtained his associate’s degree from Emory University, his bachelor’s degree in political science from Kennesaw State University, and an MBA from Regents University in Virginia. He met his wife Rosha while attending Emory University.

A Merry Christmas In Pittsville

Last night several hundred people showed up in Pittsville to support the Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive. Santa was present to greet all the children fighting the bitter cold but anxious to pass their Christmas Wishes on to Santa and walked away with a cup of hot chocolate and a bag of pop corn.

The support shown by Salisbury News Readers was simply overwhelming, as well as their donations. We raised more money in three hours than an entire day at Gander Mountain.

Fernando & Alex Guerrero were present along with their Trainer Hal Chernoff. Stacy Sakai also came to visit and show her support as well as Innae Park from 47 News, (WMDT).

If you'd like to see this incredible display it will be open through New Year's Day, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., weather permitting.

I want to personally thank all of you who came out to support this event both in person and financially.

Wicomico County Board of Ed to Cut Magnet Schools

The State of Maryland and Wicomico County is broke! Hey, I have an idea! Let's just cut the good programs to enflame the tax payer. That way, they will get upset and they don't have to share the rest of our budget. Who would like to see the entire WCBOE budget? Could this be a plan to rid us of the revenue cap.... anyone? It sucks when they use children as pawns. Of all the things to cut, they cut the programs for excellerated learning?

Yet, it is perfectly fine to spend our precious resources on playing political campaign videos in the public classroom, yes that is "Art" and valuable.

This system is so incredibly broken....

Thank you for your interest in the children of Wicomico County!

By now, you may have heard of Superintendent John Fredericksen’s plans to eliminate the Magnet schools and return these accelerated learners to their home schools. This plan is already in motion and we hope you will act now to have your voice heard.

The Central Office has publicly stated that the Magnet program that has served the unique learning needs of gifted students for the last two decades will be on the chopping block at the January 12th Board of Education meeting. A public input session will then be held on January 14th. The Superintendent’s office has stated that he will meet with no more parents to discuss the issue.

It appears that the Central office is attempting to rationalize this proposal by using budget issues and “access” issues to get rid of a successful program not supported by the Superintendent. The Central Office has not addressed parent concerns about the negative effects of this proposal on the accelerated learners currently in the program and future gifted students or the many logistical issues. In fact, NO plans are in place on how to achieve this.

The budget savings stated by the Superintendent have ranged between $42,000 and “hundreds of thousands of dollars”. This amount of savings cannot come from dissolution of magnet as it exists (per data from the BOE budget) so it begs the question, is it possible that there is a plan to consolidate schools and experience resulting class size increases?

This proposal, without effective study of the impact and input from the people most directly affected and knowledgeable about the program, would not be considered good decision making. Dr. Fredericksen may not be familiar with how the Magnet program has benefited our students. It is our job to educate him and the entire School Board by sharing our stories. Time is of the essence. Do the students of Wicomico County deserve more?

If you too are concerned about this action, please take three steps this week. Make at least one phone call, send at least one email and invite at least one person to an informational meeting on January 4th (see attached flyer).

Make a phone call to the office of Susan Jones, Director of Elementary Education at 410-677-4496 or Dr. John Fredericksen, Superintendent at 410-677-4495. Consider:

Expressing your concern at this proposal
Requesting in writing the specifics of the stated plan to put “AP level” classes in each home school or the planned class size for 2010 in your home school.
As parents and concerned taxpayers you may also request a meeting with either individual.

Send an email to at least one Board of Education member (or better yet, to more than one). They have received only cursory information from the Central Office at this point. Many are relatively new to the board with little history or experience with the accelerated learning programs. Consider:

Telling them your story and respectfully ask them to consider the proposal carefully.
Asking for information on how accelerated learners are evaluated beyond standardized testing.
Asking how it could be beneficial from a cost or instructional standpoint for these learners who are “receiving math and language arts instruction one grade level above” to be dropped back into what will be virtually repeating a year?

Change Nobody Believes In

A bill so reckless that it has to be rammed through on a partisan vote on Christmas eve.

The Senate Majority Leader has decided that the last few days before Christmas are the opportune moment for a narrow majority of Democrats to stuff ObamaCare through the Senate to meet an arbitrary White House deadline. Barring some extraordinary reversal, it now seems as if they have the 60 votes they need to jump off this cliff, with one-seventh of the economy in tow.

The rushed, secretive way that a bill this destructive and unpopular is being forced on the country shows that "reform" has devolved into the raw exercise of political power for the single purpose of permanently expanding the American entitlement state. An increasing roll of leaders in health care and business are looking on aghast at a bill that is so large and convoluted that no one can truly understand it, as Finance Chairman Max Baucus admitted on the floor last week. The only goal is to ram it into law while the political window is still open, and clean up the mess later...

As a result of the ongoing criminal investigation involving Dr. Earl Bradley all of his patient medical records have been seized and stored at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.

The medical center has agreed to take custody of the records until the charges against Dr. Bradley are adjudicated. Parents of children who were patients at the practice may obtain copies only of the records. Beebe Medical Center has agreed to distribute copies of the medical records for free. NHSCA High School Basketball Festival Announcement

NBA Hall of Famer and $25,000 Half Court shot headline the NHSCA Basketball Festival on December 30th at the Wicomico Civic Center

Salisbury, MD- NBA Hall of Famer, Rick Barry, will be at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center on Wednesday, December 30th, supporting the NHSCA High School Basketball Festival. Barry will be in attendance during the evening session from 5:45pm to 10:30pm to talk with players and coaches and sign autographs for those in attendance.

Adding to the evening’s excitement, the Rotary Club of Salisbury will sell chances from which one lucky fan will be selected to attempt a half court shot during halftime of the final game. Chances are $3 each or three for $5. The $25,000 half court shot is presented by Perdue Farms, Inc. All ticket sales will benefit the Rotary Club of Salisbury, which will use this fundraising effort to fund local community projects.*

On Barry’s presence at this year’s festival, Executive Director of the National High School Coaches Association [NHSCA], Bobby Ferraro Jr, explained, “It’s an honor and pleasure to have a man of Rick’s stature to represent the NHSCA and to be on hand for the final day of the NHSCA Basketball Festival. We are honored to have him aboard with us and we believe the athletes and coaches will really enjoy his presence.”

Barry, who was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987 is the only player ever to lead the NCAA, NBA, and the ABA in scoring. He scored more than 25,000 points in his professional career and in four different seasons averaged more than 30 points per game. He was named to 12 All-Star teams, four All-NBA First Teams, and five All-ABA First Teams. In 1996, Barry was named to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team.

Troopers stationed at Troop – 5 in Bridgeville will be delivering items to families who are experiencing difficulty during this Holiday season.

Troopers will leave Troop – 5 at 8 o’clock today and head to Milford to make their first stop.

Among some of the items being distributed is a laptop computer for a girl who has health issues that causes her to miss classes. By having this computer it will allow her to continue her education from home.

On a bitterly cold winter's day several years ago in northern British Columbia, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police constable on patrol came across a motorcyclist, who was swathed in protective clothing and helmet, stalled by the roadside.

"What's the matter?" asked the policeman.

"Carburetor's frozen," was the terse reply.
