Death Investigation Involving A 2 Month Old Infant

Location of Incident: 300 Block of Sweedes Street, Dewey Beach, DE , Sussex County

Date and Time of Occurrence: Thursday June 11, 2009 at 0430 hours

Resume:

Delaware State Police are investigating the death of a 2 month old male infant.

The baby was in the custody of foster parents when the incident occurred. The foster family along with the baby and a nanny went to Dewey Beach to open their beach house for the summer.

At approximately 2:30 in the morning the nanny feed and changed the baby’s diaper. The nanny went back to bed and laid the child next to her in the same bed. Sometime around 4:30 in the morning the nanny awoke and could not locate the child. A search of the house ensued and the child was located between the mattress and the wall of the bed the pair had shared.

Paramedics and state troopers arrived at the scene. The child was taken to Beebe Hospital in Lewes where he was pronounced death. The investigation is still on going and the cause and manner of death are undetermined at this time.

Troopers are currently interviewing individuals that were in the dwelling at the time of the infant’s death.

This is very sad, but 2 months old the baby would of been sleeping with me or in a crib/bassonet,(spl).

Very sad. My prayers go out to the family and friends of the child.

this is a prime example of why infants should NOT sleep in a bed with another person. A bassinet, crib, some place of his/her own is by far the safest place for a baby to sleep.

I am so sorry to hear about this but I am curious as to why you would take in a foster child if you were just going have a nanny do all the work.Obviously this nanny was not at all experienced or she would have known better than this.Beds are dangerous for small babies

This is a very sad story. But beds are not always dangerous or bad for babies. I have 3 kids and all 3 sleep with me for the first 2 months, then in a bassinet, then a crib. This was the only way I could get some sleep at night.
