Coming Soon - Cash For Clunkers: Home Appliance Edition

Now that it's ending, you thought you were done hearing about the Cash for Clunkers program, didn't you? Not yet. Coming soon will be a state-administered, federally-funded program providing rebates to consumers who buy Energy Star appliances. Check out Consumer Reports for a preview.

As a part of the Obama Administration's economic stimulus bill to encourage the purchase of energy-efficient appliances, the $300 million appliance-rebate program will soon dole out amounts that could reach $200 if you buy Energy Star-qualified models. Appliances that qualify for the Star should use roughly 10 to 25 percent less energy than the maximum allowed for that category by the Department of Energy, which monitors the Energy Star program.

Unlike the Cash for Clunkers car program, you won't have to turn in your old appliance to get the rebate. But states are expected to have recycling plans for the flood of old appliances the program could unleash. And while the money is coming from Washington, how much you get for which appliance will be a state-by-state decision.

How many appliances are made in the United States?

I am getting so sick and tired of the government giving away MY money!

The people who think this is a freebie need to take a course in economics and learn how the liberals are driving this country into bankruptcy and serious depression.

How many will be made by General Electric? It has no more to do with energy efficiency than the cash for clunkers "program" had to do with saving the environment! Another government scam to help the communist administrations allies and make it look like the economy is recovering!

Its been attempted on a larger scale in Crisfield-the Hosuing Authority is trying to sucker the city into updating the Section 8 units with all new appliances and plumbing fixtures, claiming the millions spent will be reclaimed thru saved energy.Theres people losing their homes they worked all their life for and we have people wasting money on this crap.

Will they at least require that the new appliances be made in the USA?

People will change out their light bulbs for swirly ones. They will turn their thermostats up to 78 to save on A/C costs, etc.

Then they will find that their electric bills have gone UP instead of down!

Why is this? Because they probably recently installed one or more of those plasma TVs, which are energy hogs. Those things use much more power than the older type CRT units that were recently thrown out.

Save on one hand, waste on the other.

So the question here will be: Would you support a cash for clunker deal on a newer plasma TV that uses less electricity than the older models?

If someone could afford one of those earlier models in the first place (the price was MUCH higher just a couple of years ago), they certainly can afford either the electric bill to operate it, or buying a replacement model out of pocket without the taxpayers subsidizing them.

have always bought energy star appliances.
new air conditioner, new furnace included in the last 3 years.
electric bill just keeps going up. nearly 700 bucks last february. that leaves 376 bucks for everything else on a fixed income. if we could afford it we'd move. where& how are the questions.
