Why does Jello have a smell when you make it, but doesn't when it's time to eat it?
How much deeper would ocean be if there weren't any sponges?
How come cats' butts go up when you pet them?

I don't know about the jello, but cats do that because they have glands at the base of their tail and in their heads/faces that product scent to mark their territory. So instinctually they lean into whatever is touching those glands so that they can more effectively spread their smell. And the ocean would be less deep without sponges because even though they are soaking up water, they are adding their own mass to the mass of the ocean.
(These are just guesses.)

The jello does still have a smell, just not as strong. My Beagle would have no problem finding the jello using only her nose.

It would not be deeper. The maximum depth of oceans is determined by the depth of the ocean floor at any given point.
How come cats' butts go up when you pet them? I really don't know, but my wife does the same thing.
