Why You Should Be Outraged About The Ruling To Keep The National Defense Authorization In Effect

On Tuesday a federal appeals court ruled the government can indefinitely detain anyone, at least until the courts decide whether to permanently block or confirm the indefinite detention clause (i.e. §1021) of the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act.
That the NDAA is fully enforceable right now is scary enough, but the details of the ruling are truly bothersome to those that have been following the rulings in the case.
First, a recap why §1021 was ruled unconstitutional and how the government reacted.

US: Immigrant stole military technology for Russia

An American success story of an immigrant from Kazakhstan who made millions off his Texas export firm took a Cold War-era turn on Wednesday when U.S. authorities accused him of being a secret agent who's been stealing military technology for the Russian military.
Alexander Fishenko was among 11 defendants named in a federal indictment filed in Brooklyn charging them in an alleged scheme to purposely evade strict export controls for cutting-edge microelectronics. It also charges Fishenko with money laundering and operating inside the United States as an unregistered agent of the Russian government.
Fishenko, a naturalized U.S. citizen and owner of Houston-based Arc Electronics Inc., and seven others were in custody in Houston following raids there by the FBI. He was expected to make his first court appearance on Thursday.

O'Malley Denounces Anti-Gambling Ads As "Hogwash"

Gov. Martin O'Malley says television ads against Maryland's proposed gambling expansion are "hogwash" and "a bunch of West Virginia casino hooey."

The governor had a few other colorful words in his tirade Wednesday against the ads by Penn National Gaming, which owns a casino in Maryland and another just over the state's border in West Virginia.

O'Malley took particular umbrage at the suggestion that additional gambling proceeds won't go to education as set out in the proposal.

Solar Power Grid Parity

Solar power seems like a such a great idea.  It's green and there's plenty of it.
But there's one gigantic problem: grid parity.
Grid parity is when a source of power becomes cost competitive with other sources.
And solar is a long way from grid parity.
"Today, you’d need to charge $375 per megawatt hour to justify investment in new solar equipment—nearly four times the average US retail price of electricity," writes Catherine Wood of AllianceBernstein. "That’s why solar energy requires steep subsidies."
Wood discusses some of the cheaper existing forms of energy:

Improving Maryland’s Electric Distribution System

State officials are considering the impact of potential infrastructure investments on the resiliency of Maryland’s electric distribution system

Governor Martin O’Malley issued an Executive Order   directing the Administration’s Energy Advisor to mobilize several key government agencies to solicit input and recommendations from experts throughout the State to improve and strengthen Maryland’s utility infrastructure and create a more resilient electric distribution system.
Citing the economic and health damage resulting from repeated and prolonged electricity outages, and pointing to projections of more violent weather to come, the Executive Order sets in place an important evaluative process for the following:
  1. The effectiveness and feasibility of undergrounding supply and distribution lines in selected areas as a means to increase the resiliency of Maryland’s electric distribution system;
  2. Options for other infrastructure investments in the electric distribution infrastructure that can or should be made in order to improve the resiliency of Maryland’s electric distribution system.  The costs and benefits of such investments should be evaluated over various time periods, including a 30-year period; and
  3. Options for financing and cost recovery for capital investments to the electric distribution system.
The group is tasked with reporting back to the Governor within 60 days regarding recommended legislative changes, regulatory reforms, and other executive branch actions.
To that end, we are asking the public to share feedback and suggestions for good ways to increase the resiliency of the grid.

WHAT WAS THE ODD DOT ON ROMNEY’S LAPEL FLAG PIN? THE CAMPAIGN TELLS US

In the spirit of Sesame Street and Big Bird (which did get a mention during Wednesday’s presidential debate), we couldn‘t help but notice the candidates’ lapel pins and note “one of these things is not like the other.”
What are we talking about? Take a look at Romney’s pin. Not only is it larger than President Barack Obama‘s flag pin but Romney’s appears to have a dot in the center of the red and white stripes.

Rare Meningitis Cases At 26 in 5 States, 4 Deaths

An outbreak of a rare and deadly form of meningitis has now sickened 26 people in five states who received steroid injections mostly for back pain, health officials said Wednesday. Four people have died, and more cases are expected.

Eighteen of the cases of fungal meningitis are in Tennessee where a Nashville clinic received the largest shipment of the steroid suspected in the outbreak. The drug was made by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts that issued a recall last week. Investigators, though, say they are still trying to confirm the source of the infections.

**DEBATE LIVE-BLOG** WATCHDOGGING TONIGHT'S MEDIA BIAS

Tonight, the city of Denver hosts the first presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney. But as any of us who pay attention know, the debate itself won't matter anywhere near as much as what the corrupt media does afterward to ensure Obama is crowned the winner.

The media's already lost round one -- the pre-debate expectations game. They overplayed the Romney-Can-Do-Nothing-Right narrative to a point where everyone expects him to get his clock cleaned tonight. This means that should Romney have a good showing, the media must find something to pick away at to declare him a walking catastrophe.
