Va. bill would fine slow drivers in left lane

WASHINGTON — Coming up on a driver going slowly in the left lane can be infuriating and the surprise can lead to safety issues if faster-moving drivers swerve around or act on their road rage, so a Virginia bill would add a fine for drivers who block the “fast lane.”

While slow-moving drivers are supposed to stay to the right, there is no penalty for violating the rule in Virginia.

The bill, set for approval in Virginia’s House of Delegates after it advanced Monday to a final vote, would make a violation a $250 fine.

“Simply put, a penalty behind it that shows that we understand the seriousness of this problem and that we’re going to be serious about actually enforcing it,” said Del. Israel O’Quinn, a Republican who represents Washington County.

OMG! Finally!! I hate to drive in Virginia for that reason. The worst are NC and DE, but VA is right behind them.
They act like it's a NASCAR race and won't let you pass. Nothing makes your blood boil more than sitting behind someone in the left lane WHO's NOT PASSING.
Like leaving Salisbury east on 50.. those numb-nuts who are turning left on Sixty Foot ( 6 miles) or Main St.(10 miles) in Willards, and they stay in the left lane from Hobbs Road.
Jesus H. Christ - learn how to drive with courtesy.

Just another way to tax you and take your money, another way for a cop to make you put your window down "ALL THE WAY" so he can try and say he smells marijuana... You get taxes for driving to fast and now driving to slow, soon as I said it before, you will be taxed just for driving, and wouldn't you know it, they are doing just that, with a pilot program in a few states... Pay per mile your drive while they track you via gps, oh but the govt doesn't track you, what do you have to hide if they did right? Hog wash...

Wonderful, about time, this is the 80 to 90 mph lane not 55 mph.

The speed limit is not slow. The law states "grossly under the speed limit in the left lane" It is and will still be legal to do the speed limit in any lane of travel.

Still, if you are not passing you should not be in the left lane.

People in Delmar leave Delmar heading for Salisbury and they are going to turn left on say, Carroll Street and they drive in the left lane all the way to Salisbury. On the way home they leave Salisbury and they get in the left lane because they are going to turn left to get back home in Delmar. Happens every single day.

Thank you 7:32. Left lane is for passing or upcoming turn. Not for cruising. I'm so amazed at how many people don't get that. Otherwise, just have one lane, right?!

try driving 55 on 97....or even 75 on Route 97.....they will run your arse over

Sometimes traffic is so heavy that cars have to be in both lanes. That said the people in the left lane should keep up with the flow of traffic in that lane and if they can't or won't then they should pull over into the right lane. Also the people in the right lane should keep up with the flow of traffic and if they can't or won't then get off the highway and drive on a back road. People use highways because they have somewhere to be. They aren't just on the highway for a Sunday drive.

If you don't like 55, move to a state that has 65 or 70 mph speed limits or are you just not that smart? Where TF do you need to be that you must exceed the speed limit by 10-15 mph? Can't manage your time well enough to leave at a time that allows you to arrive on time? Maybe speed limits are just suggestions not the maximum legal speed limit on that road. Are you the same people that constantly get tickets from the boxes in the school zones?

I do it to aholes doing 90 up behind me f them.

55 is the speed limit not 80. And road rage is no excuse for the idiots who try to run people over for doing the speed limit. Slow your ass down and obey the law. Although the left lane is for "passing" it is also a travel lane. And for those that go below the posted speed limit, speed up.

You pay for car tax, title fee, tag fee, driver license cost, gas tax, tire recycling tax, ECT, ECT, ECT... We are already taxed just for driving.
