Georges Island Maryland (Aerial) - Abandoned

Abandoned fishing community. "Stockton, once known as Sandy Hill, stood out a century ago as a water-oriented town noted for its famous "Chincoteague" oysters. The commercial fishing operations here played a significant role in the prosperity of the area. After the 1933 hurricane, the seafood industry and, in particular, oystering, rapidly declined. Fifteen oyster packing houses were destroyed during the storm and most were never rebuilt. The permanent salt-water influx from the Ocean City inlet has since allowed for oceangoing drills and parasites to decimate the oyster population." Taken with CGO2

350 years isn't a bad run for an always challenged waterside community built on what is really just a large sandbar.

Why do Chincoteague oysters survive the same saltwater just an hour south?

This is so sad we have lost a part of our state's history, and memories for a lot of us.

Conowingo-Chincoteage connection? Look at a map, genius! Obviously the product of a Wicomico County Education

How did that first house get built?

Some of the biggest oyster lie just off that shoreline. As a matter of fact a local oyster man has applied for permits to restore some of the buildings there are ignite the oyster business again. I've been taking oysters and clams from there for 20 years.

What's the Conowingo have to do with it 6:10. FYI the Conowingo doesn't create pollution as many around here like to think it traps pollution and sediment coming down. Every time someone around here mentions how the manure has devastated the local waterways some farmer or a supporter thinking they are real intelligent mentions the Conowingo saying something along the lines that it's the cause of the pollution. You can only laugh at the utter ignorance of people. It's no wonder the lower shore is a cess pool of poverty, no jobs, high unemployment, blight, stench, poisoned waters, disgusting factory farms which make it impossible for responsible employers who pay well to want to relocate on the lower shore. The area between Cambridge and OC should perspicuous but the dopey locals screwed it up royally.

Explain how the dam or the Chesapeake have anything to do with the area mentioned in this story? Stockton is on the Chincoteague bay.
